Jal Shakti Ministry will organize Jal Itihas Utsav in New Delhi

  • Ministry of Jal Shakti organized Jal Itihas Utsav in New Delhi.

Dharmendra Pradhan laid the foundation stones for six projects

‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’ in Haryana

    • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal launched the outreach programme ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’ by flagging off the IEC awareness van from Fatehpur Biloch village in Faridabad district of Haryana.
    • The Yatra will carry the welfare initiatives of the Central and State Governments to every household, ensuring the upliftment of individuals at the grassroots level in the spirit of Antyodaya.

24th edition of Hornbill Festival

  • The 24th edition of the Hornbill Festival (“festival of all festivals”) is celebrated at the Naga Heritage Village Kisama in Southern Angami region of Kohima District.
  • The main hornbill stage will feature 40 Bands and acts comprising of 800 artists throughout the 10-day festival, with participations of bands from Germany, USA, Colombia, South Korea, some of the biggest names in the Indian music scene, Nagaland and the Northeast.
  • Launched in 2000 as a collaborative event of Nagaland Tourism and the Art & Culture Department, what began as an effort to bring tribes together has evolved into a global spectacle, highlighting traditional music, dance, arts and folk cultures.
  • The festival derives its name from the Indian hornbill, a bird revered in the folklore of Nagaland’s tribes.

Walmart Foundation announced $1.2 m grant to empower 15,000 women farmers in UP

  • Walmart Foundation had announced a grant of $1.2 million to the Transform Rural India Foundation (TRIF).
  • The grant is aimed at improving the rural livelihoods of 15,000 women farmers in Uttar Pradesh to increase their average base income.
  • The two-year project will primarily focus on creating 10 self-sustainable women-led FPOs (Farmer Producer Organisations) and a platform for women farmers to strengthen and diversify their livelihoods.
  • As part of this project, the FPOs will receive assistance to develop business plans, and post-harvest infrastructure, and to build necessary systems and processes, including institutional operating spine (digital book-keeping, management control systems, standard operating procedures).

Monetary penalty by RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a monetary penalty of ₹10,000 on HDFC Bank for accepting deposits from non-residents and flouting RBI’s directions under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme of FEMA, 1999.
  • The Reserve Bank of India had also imposed a monetary penalty of ₹10,000 on Bank of America, N.A. in exercise of powers vested in the Reserve Bank under the provisions of Section 11(3) of FEMA, 1999, for violation of the Reserve Bank of India’s instructions on reporting requirements under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme of FEMA 1999.

India's GDP growth in July-September Quarter

  • India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) registered a growth of 6% in the July-September quarter.
  • It was 4% in the same quarter last year.
  • In the first quarter of 2023-24 (FY24), India’s GDP grew by 8%.

National Statistical Office FY24 Q2 GDP

  • The National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation announced the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data, for the second quarter (Q2), spanning July to September months of the financial year (FY) 2023-24.
  • The second quarter GDP growth stood at 6%.
  • Agriculture, livestock, forestry & fishing industry grew 2% in Q2 FY24.
  • Mining & quarrying grew 10% in Q2FY24.
  • The manufacturing sector grew at 9%.
  • The construction sector grew at 3% in Q2FY24.

India's fiscal deficit between Apr-Oct 45% of FY24 target

  • India’s fiscal deficit between April and October in the current financial year (FY24) touched 45% of the Centre’s 2023-24 target of ₹17.87 trillion.
  • In the corresponding period last year, the deficit was 6% of the budget estimates for 2022-23.
  • The fiscal deficit is the difference between the expenditure and revenue of the Centre.

NITC signed MoU with IIST to promote cooperation in research

  • The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) and the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote cooperation in research, academic, and other areas of mutual interest.
  • The MoU will help both the institutions to exchange information on research and academic programmes.
  • The institutes would collaborate on joint supervision of MTech and PhD thesis works and conducting conferences, seminars, and workshops jointly.
  • The collaboration will encourage research in the field of space science and technology.

  • Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 40th Coast Guard Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi.
  • The three-day conference aims at addressing contemporary maritime challenges and fortifying the country’s coastal surveillance mechanisms.

SBI MF got RBI nod to buy stake in Karur Vysya Bank

  • The Reserve Bank has given its approval to SBI Mutual Fund (SBI MF) for acquiring up to 99% of the paid-up share capital or voting rights of Karur Vysya Bank Ltd (KVB).

  • Air Marshal Makarand Ranade assumed the appointment of Director General (Inspection and Safety) [DG (I&S)] at Air HQ New Delhi by succeeding Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor.
  • The Air Marshal was awarded Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) in 2006 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2020.

‘Légion d’Honneur’ (National Order of the Legion of Honour)

  • Lalithambika VR, 60, was conferred the ‘Légion d’Honneur’ (French highest civilian award) for her engagement in space cooperation between France and India by the Ambassador of France to India, Thierry Mathou in Bengaluru.
  • The scientist, who was the director of the Human Spaceflight Programme at the ISRO, has been recognised by France for her role in the signing of the first joint agreement for cooperation between the French National Space Agency CNES and the ISRO on human spaceflight in 2018 where the two agencies agreed to work in the area of space medicine.
  • She is also credited for coordinating another Indo-French agreement on the Indian astronaut programme in
  • Under this agreement, the CNES will train India’s flight physicians and the CAPCOM mission control teams for human spaceflights in France at the CADMOS centre for the development of microgravity applications and space operations at the CNES in Toulouse and at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany.
  • She was the first director of the directorate of the human space programme at the ISRO in 2018.
  • She is the second ISRO scientist after former ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar to be awarded the Legion d’Honneur of France(National Order of the Legion of Honour) for promoting Indo-French space cooperation.

  • Arshia Sattar, eminent scholar of Indian literature and mythology, acclaimed translator, author, and co-founder and director of the literary residency, Sangam House, was conferred the insignia of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by Thierry Mathou, Ambassador of France to India, at a special ceremony at the Consulate General of France in Bengaluru.

World AIDS Day 2023

  • World AIDS Day is annually observed on December 01.
  • The day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who’ve died of the disease.
  • World AIDS Day is one of the eleven official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • World AIDS Day was first conceived in August 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • The day was first observed on December 01 1988.

  • According to World Health Organisation 39 million people around the world were living with HIV.
  • It said, more than six lakh 30 thousand people died of HIV related illnesses worldwide last year.

Three anti-submarine warfare ships were launched

  • The first of the three ships in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) shallow water crafts being built by the Cochin Shipyard for the Indian Navy were launched concurrently at the shipyard premises.
  • The ships that would be named INS Mahe, INS Malvan and INS Mangrol upon commissioning into the Navy were launched in the presence of Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sanjay J. Singh; Commander in Chief of Strategic Forces Command Vice Admiral Suraj Berry and Commandant of Indian Naval Academy Vice Admiral Puneet Bahl, by their spouses Anjali Bahl, Kangana Berry and Zarine Lord Singh.
  • The shipyard inked the contract with the Ministry of Defence to build a total of eight ASW vessels in
  • These Mahe class of ships will replace the Navy’s in-service Abhay class ASW corvettes and are designed for anti-submarine operations in the coastal waters, low-intensity maritime, mine laying and sub-surface surveillance operations.
  • They are also capable of coordinated ASW operations with aircraft, and search and rescue.
  • They are equipped with light-weight torpedoes, ASW rockets and mines, close-in weapon system (30 mm gun) and 7 mm stabilised remote control guns.
  • Each of these vessels is 78 m long, 11.36 m wide, has a draught of 7 m, displacement of 896 tonnes and can attain speeds of up to 25 knots (approximately 45 kmph).
  • Their endurance is 1,800 nautical miles and have been designed to fit indigenously-developed sonars for underwater surveillance.
  • Each vessel would carry 57 personnel, including seven naval officers.

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC)

  • The Union government accorded an initial approval to defence acquisition projects worth ₹2.23 lakh crore that included procurement of 97 Tejas light combat aircraft and 156 Prachand combat helicopters, in a major move to significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the armed forces.
  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, cleared the projects at a time India is locked in a bitter military standoff with China at a number of friction points in eastern Ladakh for over three years.
  • The Defence Ministry said 98% of the total procurement will be sourced from domestic industries and that the move will give a substantial boost to the Indian defence industry in achieving the goal of ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence industry.
  • The DAC also approved a proposal of the Indian Air Force to upgrade its Su-30 fighter fleet by state-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).
  • It further accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) or initial approval for procurement of two types of anti-tank munitions namely area denial munition (ADM) Type-2 and Type-3.
  • The MRAShM is a lightweight surface-to-surface missile which will be a primary offensive weapon onboard various Indian naval ships.
  • Though it did not mention the specific numbers, official sources said 97 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (Mark 1A) are being procured for the IAF and 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) are being procured for the Army and the IAF.
