NITI Aayog hosted National Workshop on “Harnessing the Potential of Fisheries in Marine States”

  • NITI Aayog hosted a National Workshop on “Harnessing Potential of Fisheries in Marine States” in collaboration with Government of Kerala and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) – Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Kochi, Kerala.
  • The event is an initiative under State Support Mission.
  • The one-day workshop brought together the key stakeholders from central and state governments, researchers, industry representatives and practitioners and deliberated upon critical aspects of realizing India’s vast marine fisheries promise across the domains of sustainability, market linkages and addressing ground challenges.
  • The workshop witnessed progressive discussions on sectoral issues that require addressing policy constraints, bridging capacity gaps and enhancing participation – all crucial to achieve marine fisheries’ full growth potential as a mass-employment generator and foreign exchange earner for India.
  • The four Technical Sessions of the workshop focused on pressing issues like sustainability practices, export competitiveness, infrastructure gaps and livelihood challenges facing India’s marine fishing industry across states.
  • Coastal states namely Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Odisha shared their best practices which can be scaled up.
  • The workshop also focussed on certification and sustainability in the marine sector highlighting policy gaps and initiatives.
  • The expected outcomes include identifying the key issues and gaps hampering progress of the sector, recommendations for addressing sustainability, marketing, and technological aspects and strategies for upgraded safety & infrastructure and enhancing stakeholders’

India, Mauritius to jointly develop small satellite at cost of Rs 20 crore in 15 months

  • India and Mauritius will jointly develop a small satellite which will be launched by Indian Space Research Organization early
  • India and Mauritius had signed a Memorandum of Understanding for development of a joint small satellite during the visit of Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan to Port Louis on November 1 2023.
  • The MoU will help to establish a framework for cooperation between Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) on the development of a joint satellite as well as for cooperation on the use of the ground station in the island nation.

Dr S. Jaishankar & his counterpart N P Saud co-chair 7th India-Nepal Joint Commission Meeting in Kathmandu, Nepal

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar along with his counterpart N P Saud co-chaired the 7th India-Nepal Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) in
  • The leaders discussed various aspects of bilateral relations including economy, connectivity, trade and transit, power and water resources.
  • The two important agreements were signed, the first being a long-term agreement on electricity and another to enhance investment in High Impact Community Development projects.
  • An MoU for Cooperation in Renewable Energy Development was also signed between Nepal Electricity Authority and NTPC Limited.
  • With the signing of the agreement, the bilateral understanding to export 10,000 megawatts of electricity from Nepal to India in the next ten years has been materialised.

Nitin Gadkari inaugurates and lays foundation stone for 12 NH projects in Kerala worth ₹1464 crore

  • Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 12 National Highway projects in Kerala worth ₹1464 crore through video conferencing.
  • Among the projects dedicated include the upgradation of the Bodimettu-Munnar National Highway, a bridge over Cheruthoni river badly affected during floods and the widening of NH 966, benefitting the districts of Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode.

Schemes

Indore, Bhopal, Udaipur selected for Wetland City Accreditation scheme under the Ramsar Convention

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change submits proposals for Wetland City Accreditation (WCA) under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands for the cities of Indore, Bhopal and Udaipur.
  • India is one of the contracting parties and has already declared a total of 75 wetland sites under the Ramsar Convention – Intergovernmental treaty signed in 1971 at Ramsar (Iran) providing frameworks for the conservation & wise use of wetlands & their resources.
  • The WCA scheme under Ramsar Convention, aims to further promote the conservation and wise use of urban and peri-urban wetlands, as well as sustainable socio-economic benefits for local populations.
  • Sirpur Wetland (Ramsar site in Indore), Yashwant Sagar (Ramsar site closer to Indore), Bhoj Wetland (Ramsar Site in Bhopal), and several Wetlands (Lakes) in and around Udaipur are lifelines to these cities.

Cabinet approves overarching scheme “PRITHvi VIgyan (PRITHVI)” of the Ministry of Earth Sciences

  • The Union Cabinet Chaired by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has approved the overarching scheme “PRITHvi VIgyan (PRITHVI)” of Ministry of Earth Sciences, for implementation during the period from 2021-26 at an overall cost of ₹4,797 crores.
  • The scheme encompasses five ongoing sub-schemes namely “Atmosphere & Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services (ACROSS)”, “Ocean Services, Modelling Application, Resources and Technology (O-SMART)”, “Polar Science and Cryosphere Research (PACER)”, “Seismology and Geosciences (SAGE)” and “Research, Education, Training and Outreach (REACHOUT)”.
  • The major Objectives of the overarching Prithvi Scheme are:
    • Augmentation and sustainance of long-term observations of the atmosphere, ocean, geosphere, cryosphere and solid earth to record the vital signs of the Earth System and change
    • Development of modelling systems for understanding and predicting weather, ocean and climate hazards and understanding the science of climate change
    • Exploration polar and high seas regions of the Earth towards discovery of new phenomena and resources;
    • Development of technology for exploration and sustainable harnessing of oceanic resources for societal applications
    • Translation of knowledge and insights from Earth systems science into services for societal, environmental and economic benefit.

Narayana Health gets IRDAI nod to launch health insurance business

  • Narayana Health received approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to launch a health insurance business in India.
  • The company runs one of the largest hospital chains under the brand name of Narayana Hospital.
  • Other Standalone Health Insurance Companies (SAHI) – Aditya Birla Health Insurance, Niva Bupa Health Insurance, Care Health Insurance, Star Health Insurance, HDFC ERGO Health Insurance, ManipalCigna Health Insurance and Reliance Health Insurance.

Business and Economy

India’s real GDP growth for 2023-24 estimated at 7.3%

  • As per the first advance estimates of national income released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) India’s real GDP growth in 2023-24 is estimated at 3%, compared to 7.2% a year ago.
  • Interestingly, the NSO expects the growth in Gross Value Added (GVA) in the economy to ease slightly from 7% in 2022-23 to 9% this year, and pegs nominal GDP growth at 8.9% compared to the 10.5% Budget estimate.
  • This could translate into the fiscal deficit breaching the year’s 9% of GDP target to hit around 6%.

UN report revises India's GDP projection downward to 6.2% for 2024

  • The United Nations World Economic Situation and Prospects Report 2024 revised India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth estimate for the 2024 calendar year to 2 per cent, compared to 6.7 per cent earlier.
  • The report projects a rebound in 2025, with a GDP growth projection of 6 per cent.

Agreements and MoUs signed

Indian Railways signed MoU with CII to promote and facilitate green initiatives

  • Indian Railways has signed an MoU with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to reduce energy and water consumption lowering GHG emissions.
  • Indian Railways and CII have renewed their MoU for third consecutive term.
  • Significant progress has been made so far under above 02 MoUs in achieving:    
  • Energy efficiency in manufacturing facilities and railway workshops: This initiative resulted in energy savings of 210 lakh kWh, and monetary savings of Rs. 16 crores and resulted in significant GHG emissions reduction of around 18000 tons of CO2.
  • GreenCo rating: This initiative has been implemented in 75 Railways units (workshops & manufacturing facilities) and has improved their environmental performance substantially.
  • Green Railway Stations: Around 40 stations have achieved green certificate and have demonstrated significant improvements by saving 22 million KWh energy and 3 billion litres of water annually.
  • Green Buildings, Hospitals, Schools and Colonies: Over 40 building facilities, including administrative buildings, hospitals, schools and colonies have been facilitated to achieve green certification.
  • Capacity building and skill development: More than 20 New technology suppliers have been introduced, with around 150 IR officials have been exposed to the 06 Best energy efficient private sector plants in India. Also, around 900 IR officials trained on different aspects of energy efficiency.
  • Under this MoU, besides initiatives already being under taken, CII will collaborate in bringing new/relevant technologies and its implementation, assistance for achieving ISO 50001 certification of workshops/production units, development of Net-Zero Energy Railway station framework and an information dashboard will also be created to highlight the advancement in green initiatives throughout the year taken jointly by IR and CII.

India signs MoU with United States for International Development/India (USAID/India) for supporting Indian Railways to achieve Mission Net Zero Carbon Emission

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was apprised of signing of Memorandum of Understanding between India and United States for International Development/India (USAID/India) for supporting Indian Railways to achieve Mission Net Zero Carbon Emission by
  • The MoU provides a platform for Indian Railways to interact and share the latest developments and knowledge in the railway sector.
  • The MoU facilitates utility modernization, advanced energy solutions and systems, regional energy and market integration and private sector participation and engagement, training and seminars/workshops focusing on specific technology areas like Renewable Energy, energy efficiency and other interactions for knowledge sharing.
  • Earlier, USAID/India had also worked with IR focused on deployment of rooftop solar across railway platforms.

India signed MoU with Guyana on cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Union Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, India and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Republic of Guyana on cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector.
  • The MoU on cooperation in hydrocarbon sector with Guyana will strengthen bilateral trade, foster investment in each other countries and help diversifying source of crude oil, thus augmenting the energy & supply security of the country.
  • It will also provide opportunity to Indian company to participate in E&P sector of Guyana, gaining experience by working with global oil & gas companies in upstream projects, thus fostering the vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”.
  • This MoU shall enter into force on the date of its signature and will remain in force for a period of five years and shall be automatically renewed thereafter on a quinquennium basis unless either Party gives the other Party a written notice three months in advance of its intention to terminate this Understanding.

SEBI appoints Govindayapalli Ram Mohan Rao as its executive director

  • Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) appointed Govindayapalli Ram Mohan Rao as the executive director for three years who will handle the departments of investigation and internal inspection.
  • Prior to this, Rao was the regional director of the eastern regional office of SEBI and supervised diverse portfolios, including inspections, setting up of investor service centres, investor awareness, redressal of grievances and coordination with 13 states or Union Territories, among others.

  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appointed Indian Premier League side Rajasthan Royals’ former official Raghuram Iyer as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
  • The CEO will be an ex-officio member of the Executive Council without voting rights.
  • He is not an elected member but a salaried official.
  • Iyer had earlier served as CEO of IPL sides Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants.

Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey assumes charge of BIMSTEC Secretary General

  • Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, a senior diplomat of India, assumed the position of Secretary General (SG) of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) by replacing Tenzin Lekphell of Bhutan in Dhaka.
  • He is the 4th SG of BIMSTEC and will remain in office for a period of three years.

  • At TerraPay, Pai was responsible for launching and implementing its payment products and solutions globally.
