MoRTH develops five guidelines to enhancing mountainous road infrastructure
- The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), with the technical assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has developed five guidelines aimed at enhancing mountainous road infrastructure in India.
- These guidelines are designed to ensure high-quality and sustainable road projects in hilly regions which will improve road networks and promote economic growth.
- These guidelines were published by Indian Road Congress (IRC) and released by the Union Minister for Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari during the inaugural function of 225th Mid Term Council Meeting at Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
- The guidelines provide technical specifications and best practices for road construction in mountainous regions, covering the following topics:
- Planning of Hilly Roads
- Slope Protection and Embankment with Advanced Technology
- Tunnel on Arterial Roads in Hilly Area
- Mountain Bridge with Advance Technology
- Operation and Maintenance of Mountainous Highways
- Recognizing the critical role that well-maintained roads play in facilitating trade, connectivity and social development, MoRTH and JICA had agreed to implement “Capacity Development Project on Highways in Mountainous Regions” from 2016 to 2021.

India and UAE Joint Vision Statement & Future of Relationship
- India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) issued a joint vision statement in 2022 outlining their shared goals and strengthening their bilateral relationship.
- The statement was released after a virtual summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
- The joint vision statement focuses on five key areas of cooperation: trade and investment, energy, security, people-to-people ties, and global issues.
- Both countries aim to deepen their collaboration and achieve common objectives in these areas.
- They have set a target of reaching $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030 and will work together to promote economic diversification and innovation.
- The comprehensive economic partnership between the two countries is the direct outcome of the joint vision statement.
- The two nations will also collaborate on ensuring energy security, clean energy technologies, and climate change mitigation.
- In terms of security, they are committed to promoting regional stability and will cooperate on counterterrorism and maritime security.
- Enhancing people-to-people ties through cultural exchanges, education, and tourism is another priority.

India, France announce co-development of combat aircraft engine
- India and France have announced a slew of defence agreements, including “ground-breaking” cooperation in advanced aeronautical technologies on the joint development of a combat aircraft engine, but abstained from announcing in the joint statement issued after bilateral talks between Prime Minister Nadrendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron about the acquisition of 26 maritime Rafale for Indian Navy.
- The two believe concrete action is needed to end cross-border terrorism and have agreed to increase cooperation in this direction.

MoS for I&B L. Murugan flagged off newly constructed heritage train, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway at Mettupalayam Railway Station
- Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting L. Murugan flagged off the newly constructed renowned heritage train, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Ooty Train), at Mettupalayam Railway Station which runs between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam.
- The train, which is the epitome of pride, will now operate on the picturesque route of Kunnur.
- This new development by the Indian Railways Department in its revamped form has been introduced to efficiently cater to the increasing number of tourists and to enhance their travel experience.
- The inauguration of the new train marks the commencement of joyful journeys by enthusiastic passengers on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
- This will undoubtedly add to the allure of the Nilgiris district, which is famous for its scenic beauty.

Shri Amit Shah approves further release of Rs. 180.40 crore to State Government of Himachal Pradesh under the State Disaster Response Fund
- Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, approved the advance release of 2nd installment of Central Share of State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) amounting to Rs. 180.40 crore, for the year 2023-24, as an interim relief to Himachal Pradesh.
- In order to support the affected people of this State, the Central Government has already released 1st installment of Central share of Rs. 180.40 crore to Himachal Pradesh from SDRF, for relief measures of immediate nature.
- The release of funds will help State Government to undertake relief measures to the affected people during the current Monsoon season.

Scindia inaugurates new runway and elevated taxiway at Delhi Airport
- Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Civil Aviation and Steel inaugurated a new runway and a dual-way elevated taxiway at New Delhi International Airport.
- With this, the IGI Airport, New Delhi has become the first airport in the country to have four runways and becomes the first airport in the country to have an elevated taxiway.

Schemes
Coal ministry considering coal gasification scheme with outlay of Rs 6000 crore
- The government is considering a comprehensive scheme to promote coal gasification projects for both government public sector undertakings (PSUs) and the private sector with an outlay of Rs 6000 crore.
- The Ministry of Coal has set a target to achieve coal gasification of 100 Million Tonne (MT) coal by FY 2030 reflecting the government’s commitment to harnessing the power of coal gasification.
- The adoption of the gasification technology will reduce India’s reliance on imports of natural gas, methanol, ammonia and other essential products.
- Currently, India imports approximately 50 per cent of its natural gas, over 90 per cent of its total methanol consumption and around 13-15 per cent of its total ammonia consumption to cater to the domestic demand.
- This will also help create a surge in employment opportunities and make a significant contribution to the nation’s development by reducing imports by 2030.

Agreements and MoUs signed
Gujarat government and Centre signed MoU for PM MITRA textile park in Navsari
- The Gujarat government and the Centre signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a PM MITRA textile park on a 462-hectare plot in Navsari district.
- The PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel (PM MITRA) Park will come in Vansi-Borsi village and will help the circular economy of the region.
- Gujarat has been a hub of textile manufacturing.
- It was earlier known as Manchester of East and now it is known as textile state of India or denim capital of India.
- Gujarat is second in textile exports in the country.
- Almost 60-70 per cent of the country’s denim is made in the state.
- Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) will develop the PM Mitra Park in Navsari.
- The state government has allotted 462 hectares to GIDC for the project, for which the Centre will provide assistance of 30 per cent, or Rs 500 crores of the Rs 1500 crore outlay for infrastructure development.

RBI, UAE's central bank signed MoUs to promote local currencies, UPI for cross-border transactions
- The Reserve Bank of India and the Central Bank of UAE (CBUAE) signed two MoUs related to the promotion of local currencies for cross-border transactions and interlinking their payment systems UPI with the Instant Payment Platform (IPP) of UAE.
- According to the MoUs signed between the two central banks, both of them would now help each other in establishing a common framework for the promotion of the use of local currencies, i.e, the Indian rupee (INR) and the UAE Dirham (AED) for cross-border transactions.
- While the next MoU would help the banks in interlinking their payment and messaging system with UPI and IPP.

Paytm signed an exclusive MoU with Goa Government
- Paytm had signed an exclusive memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Goa government for digitisation of all its departments.
- The MoU was signed in the presence of the Chief Minister of Goa Dr. Pramod Sawant and Dr V. Candavelou, Finance Secretary of Goa.
- Under the MoU signed, they will help the various departments of the Goa Government go digital.
- With their technology-led innovative devices, we have strengthened our merchant payments leadership by deploying 79 Lakh devices, both Soundbox and Card Machine.
- They will deploy our payment devices like Paytm QR code, Soundbox, and Card Machines in all departments including panchayats and municipalities.
- With this, users can make payments for various services including municipal tax, water, and panchayats through Paytm UPI, UPI Lite, Paytm Wallet, net banking, debit cards, and credit cards.

Elista signed MoU with Andhra government to set up manufacturing plant
- Electronics, home appliances, IT & mobile accessories brand Elista has signed an MoU with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to invest Rs 100 crore in setting up its second manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh.
- Elista recently announced setting up a modern 1.32 lakh sq ft facility in Andhra Pradesh with an investment of Rs 250 crore in March 2023.
- This will be the second consecutive plant from Elista in the state.
- Scheduled to be operational in Dec 2024.

Veteran actor Ravindra Mahajani Passed Away
- Veteran actor Ravindra Mahajani has passed away at 77.
- Mahajani had featured in several Marathi films such as ‘Mumbai cha Fauzdar’, ‘Zoonj’, ‘Kalat Nakalat’.
- He was also seen in Ashutosh Gowariker’s film ‘Panipat’ (2019).

Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2023
- Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2023 held at Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida, India.
- India’s medal tally at the event rose to 11 in the senior’s category.
- The haul so far comprises 7 golds and 4 silvers.
- India’s Shubham Todkar and Popy Hazarika won the gold medals in the men’s 61kg and women’s 59kg categories, respectively.
- T Madhavan, meanwhile, bagged a silver medal in the men’s 67kg event.
- Indian weightlifters N Ajith and Ajay Singh won gold medals in 73kgs & 81kgs respectively while Harjinder Kaur settled for silver in women’s 71kg at the senior Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2023.
Ravichandran Ashwin surpasses Harbhajan to become 2nd highest wicket-taker for India in international cricket
- Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed Harbhajan Singh to become the second-highest wicket-taker for India in international cricket.
- Aswhin did so during the first Test of two-match series against West Indies in Dominica.
- Ashwin has 709 wickets in 271 international matches.
- These wickets have come at an average of 25.67 and his best bowling figures are 7/59.
- He has 27 four-wicket hauls, 34 five-wicket hauls, and 8 ten-wicket hauls in international cricket.
- India’s best bowler in international cricket is Anil Kumble, who has taken 953 in 401 matches at an average of 30.06 with best figures of 10/74.
- He has 39 four-wicket hauls, 37 five-wicket hauls and eight ten-wicket hauls.

Exercise Op Southern Readiness 2023
- INS Sunayna participated in Op Southern Readiness 2023 conducted by Combined Maritime Forces(CMF) in Seychelles.
- The visit was aimed at strengthening multilateral ties and enhancing cooperation through CMF exercise which is a multinational initiative aimed at enhancing maritime security, countering piracy to ensure safety and freedom of navigation in the region.
- During the visit, personnel of participating Navies from USA, Italy, UK, Seychelles Defence Forces & Marine Police, member nations of EUNAVFOR were engaged in wide range of professional interactions, subject matter expert exchanges and visits.
- The ship conducted lecture and practical demonstrations on varied aspects of Navigation, VBSS (Basic and Advanced training), Maritime Domain Awareness and mass casualty evacuation drills.
- A delegation of CMF from Bahrain headed by Cmde Oliver, Commander of CTF56 witnessed the training exercises onboard.
- A combined yoga session was organised onboard with participation of personnel from Seychelles Defence Forces and CMF along with the ship’s crew.
