Indian Council of Agricultural Research celebrates 95th foundation day
- The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) celebrated its 95th foundation day at its headquarters here in the national capital on July 16.
- Established on July 16, 1929, and formerly known as the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research according to its website, ICAR is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
- A three-day exhibition has been organized to showcase technologies developed by the state-owned premier research organisation to benefit farmers, students, industry, and entrepreneurs.
- Seeds, horticulture items, processed organic products such as millets, drones for spraying fertilisers and pesticides, were on display for visitors.

India gifts 84 vehicles to hospitals and schools in Nepal
- India gifted 84 vehicles to various organisations working in health and education sectors across Nepal, the Indian Embassy in Nepal.
- The keys of 34 ambulances and 50 school buses were handed over by Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava in the presence of Ashok Kumar Rai, the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, to representative organisations.
- India has since 1994, gifted 974 ambulances and 234 school buses, including the latest lot, to various health and educational organisations across Nepal.

3rd Edition of Singapore - India Hackathon
- Minister for Education, Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, and Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Finance, Mr. Lawrence Wong felicitated the winners of 3rd Edition of Singapore – India Hackathon in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
- A tool to help regulators detect potential suspects of insider trading created by students of Nanyang Technological University, Amity University, and Dwarkadas College of Engineering took the top student prize at the third edition of the Singapore-India Hackathon, jointly organised by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) of Ministry of Education, India and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore).
- It was attended by over 600 students, start-ups, investors, policymakers, corporates, and academics.

- Ms. Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Finance, Indonesia, and the Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, launched the “India – Indonesia Economic and Financial Dialogue”.
- The platform, unveiled during the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting, seeks to strengthen cooperation between the two nations and foster a shared understanding on global issues.
- The evolution of India’s ‘Look East Policy’ in 1991, followed by the ‘Act East Policy’, has facilitated a rapid development in our bilateral relations, particularly in the commercial and cultural fields.
- Indonesia has emerged as India’s largest trading partner in the ASEAN region, with our trade seeing an eightfold increase since 2005, reaching an impressive $38 billion in FY 2022-23.
- The EFD Dialogue is poised to enhance collaboration on bilateral and international economic and financial matters by bringing together economic policymakers and financial regulators from both countries.
- Areas of cooperation inter-alia, include macroeconomic challenges and global economic prospects, bilateral investment relations, and cooperation in G20 and ASEAN matters.

BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers meeting starts in Bangkok, Thailand
- Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Foreign Ministers first ever meeting started in Bangkok, Thailand.
- Mr. Jaishankar Co-chaired the 12th Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) meeting in Bangkok along with Foreign Minister of Lao PDR Saleumxay Kommasith.
- Enhancing connectivity among the MGC countries was a priority and urged for the speedy completion of the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, reportedly delayed due to the crisis in Myanmar.
- A 1,400 km project that falls in the BIMSTEC region, this highway would link Moreh in Manipur with Mae Sot in Thailand.

Annual Bonalu Festival celebrated in Hyderabad
- A festive atmosphere prevailed in Hyderabad especially in parts of Old city as the annual Bonalu (बोनालू) festival during the Hindu Lunar month of Ashada Masam (आषाड़ा मासम) was celebrated.
- Long queues were witnessed at Akkana Madanna temple, Hari Bowli, Sri Simhavahini Mahankali temple at Lal Darwaza, and other nearby temples in Old City.
- Dressed in traditional best, women were seen carrying ‘Bonam’, on their heads and making an offering to the deity at the temples.
- Bonam means, sweetened meal in a pot.
- The streets reverberated with devotional songs even as folk artists danced to the beats of folk music.

Rajnath Singh inaugurated and laid foundation of many development projects in Lucknow
- Raksha Mantri and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh will inaugurate and lay the foundation of many development projects today in Lucknow.
- Two national highways projects worth rupees 3300 crores will also be inaugurated.
- Mr Singh will inaugurate the Madiaon-IIM Crossing flyover which is part of national highways project.
- He will also inaugurate newly developed Alamnagar railway station that will help passengers of western part of the city including Alamnagar and Rajajipuram to board and alight trains for New Delhi.
- They won’t be required to travel to Charbagh, the main railway station of the city.
- The railway station has been redeveloped at a cost of Rs 50 crore, including Rs 42 crore were invested in electronic interlocking, signal, two loop lines and development of three platforms, circulating area of station and other amenities of station.

Google Pay introduces UPI Lite
- Google Pay has started rolling out the UPI Lite feature for users in India.
- With UPI Lite, Google Pay users can make everyday payments for everyday items such as groceries, snacks, and cab rides faster.
- UPI Lite was launched by the Reserve Bank of India in September 2022.
- It is a digital payment service designed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
- Users can send up to ₹200 money with a single tap from their UPI Lite account.
- The service does not require one to enter a PIN to initiate the payment.
- Aim of UPI Lite is to make digital payments simple and fast.
- The UPI Lite promises higher success rates even during peak transaction hours.
- Users can load up to ₹2,000 twice a day and make payment of up to ₹200 at a time.

UNDP India joined hands with Absolute to further sustainable agriculture practices under PMFBY
- United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Absolute, a bioscience company, on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the government of India’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and enhance the resilience of the farmers.
- India faces challenges such as weather fluctuations, pest attacks, erratic rainfall, and humidity affecting agricultural produce.
- These factors lead to lower yields and income for farmers each year.
- From 2015 to 2021, India lost 33.9 million hectares of cropped area due to floods and excess rains and 35 million hectares due to drought.
- The partnership between UNDP India and Absolute aims to enhance the implementation of the PMFBY and the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) by building technical capabilities of the scheme and digitalising service delivery of crop insurance and agricultural credit processes to increase reach and uptake of the schemes.
- It will also promote credit profiling of farmers, agri-entrepreneurs, and Farmer Producers Organizations (FPOs), for accurate crop loss assessment and risk evaluation to mobilize agriculture financing.
- UNDP and Absolute will also use advanced technology and data-driven solutions to facilitate farmland identification and enhance farm monitoring, R&D, and analytical capabilities to facilitate data-driven policymaking and fraud analytics, ensuring efficient and transparent delivery of government support to vulnerable farmers.

India, UAE sign MoU for planning to establish IIT-Delhi campus in Abu Dhabi
- India and UAE signed a Memorandum of Understanding for planning to establish Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Delhi in Abu Dhabi, which could be the second IIT abroad after Tanzania.
- The MoU was signed following talks between UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Abu Dhabi.

Regional Conference on ‘Drugs Smuggling and National Security’
- Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah chaired Regional Conference on ‘Drugs Smuggling and National Security’ in New Delhi.
- During the Conference, under the leadership of the Union Home Minister, over 1,44,000 kilogram drugs worth Rs.2,416 crore, will be destroyed in various parts of the country by NCB in coordination with ANTFs of all states.
- Government has adopted a ’Zero Tolerance’ policy against narcotics to create a drugs-free India.

The report -- 'National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A progress of Review 2023'
- The report ‘National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A progress of Review 2023’ was released by Suman Bery, Vice-Chairman, Niti Aayog.
- India witnessed 13.5 crore people moving out of multidimensional poverty between 2015-16 and 2019-21 with fastest reduction in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan
- India has registered a significant decline of 9.89 percentage points in number of India’s multidimensionally poor from 24.85 per cent in 2015-16 to 14.96 per cent in 2019-21.
- The National MPI measures simultaneous deprivations across three equally weighted dimensions of health, education, and standard of living that are represented by 12 sustainable development goal (SDG) aligned indicators.
- The report said rural areas witnessed the fastest decline in poverty from 32.59 per cent to 19.28 per cent, while the urban areas saw a reduction in poverty from 8.65 per cent to 5.27 per cent.
- Providing multidimensional poverty estimates for the 36 states and Union Territories, and 707 administrative districts, the report said the fastest reduction in the proportion of multidimensional poor was observed in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Rajasthan.

ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Italy
- In shooting, India shooter Prithviraj Tondaiman bagged the bronze medal in the men’s trap event at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup Lonato 2023 in Italy.
- Prithviraj Tondaiman’s bronze was India’s only medal at the Lonato shooting meet.
- This was his second individual ISSF World Cup medal, having won a bronze in Doha in March.
- Overall, India finished ninth in the medals tally at Lonato, which was topped by the USA with two golds and one silver.

World Day for International Justice 2023
- World Day for International Justice is celebrated on July 17 to respect the significant role played by The International Criminal Court and other organisations in serving justice to people who have been victims of a lot of crimes.
- July 17 is the Day of International Criminal Justice.
- It marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute on 17 July 1998, the founding treaty of the ICC, which seeks to protect people from genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.
World Emoji Day 2023
- World Emoji Day is an annually observed on 17 July, intended to celebrate emoji; in the years since the earliest observance, it has become a popular date to make product or other announcements and releases relating to emoji.
- First Observed in 2014.

India-Mongolia joint military exercise 'Nomadic Elephant 2023' to commence in Ulaanbaatar
- An Indian Army contingent comprising 43 personnel left for Mongolia to take part in a joint military exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant 2023’ between India and Mongolia
- This will be the 15th edition of the exercise between the two nations.
- The exercise is scheduled at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
- The exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’ is an annual training event between India and Mongolia, which is conducted alternatively in the two countries, the release stated, adding that the last edition of the joint drills was held at Special Forces Training School, Bakloh, in October 2019.
- Soldiers of the Mongolian Armed Forces Unit 084 and Indian Army jawans from the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment will be participating in the exercise.
- The scope of this exercise involves a Platoon level Field Training Exercise (FTX).
