80.10 Crore beneficiaries availing benefits of Public Distribution System through 5.45 lakh Fair Price Shops across the country

  • As on 30th June 2023, around 80.10 Crore NFSA beneficiaries [Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)-8.95 Crore & Priority Households (PHH)- 71.15 Crore] are getting benefits of Public Distribution System in the country through 5.45 lakh Fair Price Shops (FPSs) in India.
  • Further, States/UTs regularly issue new ration cards to the eligible households/beneficiaries in place of cancelled ration cards under ceiling limit of the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
  • As on 30th June 2023, around 80.10 Crore NFSA beneficiaries [Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)-8.95 Crore & Priority Households (PHH)- 71.15 Crore] are getting benefits of Public Distribution System in the country through 5.45 lakh Fair Price Shops (FPSs) in India.

India, Sri Lanka agree to boost ties through energy, power and port projects

  • India and Sri Lanka had agreed to improve economic ties by increasing cooperation in renewable energy and studying the feasibility of building an oil pipeline and a land bridge between the two countries.
  • New Delhi will also help develop a port and an economic hub at Trincomalee, a city on Sri Lanka’s northeastern coast.
  • India’s support of nearly $4 billion between January and July last year was critical for Sri Lanka after it almost ran out of dollars and sank into a financial crisis that left it struggling to fund essential imports including fuel and medicine.

India, Japan sign MoC for semiconductor supply-chain partnership

  • After a successful journey in the automotive industry, India and Japan signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) on semiconductor supply-chain partnership for government-to-government and industry-to-industry collaboration.
  • This partnership will lead to semiconductor design, semiconductor manufacturing, equipment research, talent development and overall how to bring resilience in the supply chain.
  • Both the countries will create an implementation organisation that will work on opportunities for government-to-government and industry-to-industry collaborations.

Karnataka State Government’s Finance Department partners with Kellton to develop Human Resource Management System version 2.0

  • Kellton, a leading global IT solutions provider, announced that it has secured a highly prestigious, multi-year large-scale project from the Karnataka State Government’s Finance Department to develop and implement HRMS Version 2.0 for over 600,000 state government employees in Karnataka.
  • The Karnataka State Government has entrusted Kellton to bring forth a range of advanced features and functionalities to streamline and enhance the overall Human Resource Management processes.
  • The HRMS 2.0 system will significantly enhance the existing capabilities, encompassing critical areas such as recruitment, cadre management, transfers, promotion, service register, leave management, and operational reports.
  • This upgrade will provide a more efficient and user-friendly experience for the employees.
  • Kellton will develop and integrate new modules, including employee self-service, retirement management, annual performance management, service register with core history, and analytical reports with data analytics.
  • These additions aim to improve the Karnataka State Government’s human resource processes, allowing for better management and optimization.

Financial assistance of Rs. 659.26 lakh provided to Karnataka between 2020-July 2023 under Hathkargha Samvardhan Sahayata

  • Ministry of Textiles is implementing National Handloom Development Programme to provide need based financial assistance to eligible handloom agencies and handloom workers through various interventions like Cluster Development Programme including Hathkargha Samvardhan Sahayata (HSS), Design & product development, Marketing support, Weaver’s Mudra loan, Weavers welfare etc. for development of handlooms and welfare of handloom workers across the country including Karnataka.
  • Under Hathkargha Samvardhan Sahayata (HSS), financial assistance is provided to handloom workers for upgradation of looms & accessories to improve quality and enhance productivity based on the complete proposals received from the concerned States/UTs Governments.

L&T bags order worth nearly Rs 7,000 crores for Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail project

  • Construction major Larsen & Toubro announced that its heavy civil infrastructure business has received an order worth more than Rs 7,000 crore from the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to construct the 135.45 km stretch of MAHSR – C3 package, a part of the Mumbai Ahmedabad high-speed rail project.
  • The company said that the assignment includes the construction of viaducts, stations, major river bridges, depots, tunnels, earth structures, stations, and other auxiliary works.
  • With this package, L&T will execute 92 per cent of the main line between Shilphata in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
  • L&T said that the project is in line with its strategic goals.
  • The approximately 508 km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project will cover 155.76 kms in Maharashtra, 4.3 kms in Dadra & Nagar Haveli and 348.04 kms in Gujarat.
  • The train will have 12 stations alon

Kerala gets India’s first Construction Innovation Hub

  • Kerala got the country’s first Construction Innovation Hub (CIH) that seeks to promote affordable and sustainable building facilities so as to foster collaboration, innovation and knowledge-sharing among the stakeholders.
  • Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) will be responsible for the CIH’s overall programme management, including the identification and recruitment of the nascent companies as well as providing them housing-related technical mentorship and connections, besides program design and facilitation.
  • Set up in association with Habitat for Humanity India (HFHI), which is an American non-profit organisation building homes and providing housing-related services to low-income families, the CIH is set to be based in Kochi.
  • KSUM Chief Executive Officer Anoop Ambika said CIH will help consolidate worldwide knowledge pertinent to construction.

Schemes

'Gruha Lakshmi' scheme

  • Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched the registration for the Congress government’s ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ scheme, which provides ₹2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family in the state.
  • The scheme is expected to benefit 1.28 crore women, each of whom will receive ₹24,000 annually.
  • In this light, the Siddaramaiah-led government had allocated ₹24,166 crore for the scheme in it’s recent budget announcement.
  • It will cost the government ₹35,000 crore every year.

Chhattisgarh govt launches housing scheme to fend off criticism

  • Chhattisgarh government has announced new housing scheme named Gramin Awas Nyay Yojana to provide free housing for poor in the state.
  • CM Bhupesh Baghel while announcing the new housing scheme for the poor in Chhattisgarh said there are certain families who are not eligible for PM Awas Yojana based on 2011 SECC list, Gramin Awas Nyay Yojana will cover such families based on the new survey conducted by Department of Panchayat & Rural Development.
  • Chhattisgarh Gramin Awas Yojana is announced by CM bhupesh Baghel on 19th Juy 2023 during the monsoon assembly session, the motive of the scheme is to provide housing rural poor families who are not eligible in PM Awas Yojana due to any reason.
  • A budget of 100 crore rupees has been allocated for Gramin Awas Nyay Yojana 2023.

SevaBhoj Scheme

'YSR Nethanna Nestham' scheme

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy disbursed Rs 194 crore financial assistance to 80,686 handloom weavers as part of the ‘YSR Nethanna Nestham’ scheme at Venkatagiri in Tirupati district.
  • The eligible beneficiaries received an annual assistance of Rs 24,000 under the scheme which is aimed at making the weaver families owning looms self-reliant.
  • Until now we disbursed Rs 1.20 lakh each into the accounts of eligible weavers.
  • With this scheme alone, Rs 970 crore has been disbursed to weavers in these five years.
  • Besides ‘YSR Nethanna Nestham’, the Chief Minister noted that an amount of Rs 1,397 crore has disbursed towards weavers’ pension and Rs 469 crore to APCO (the Andhra Pradesh State Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society Ltd), which also included the clearing pending arrears from the previous government.

Sashakt Mahila Rin Yojna

  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu launched a collateral-free loan scheme for women.
  • The ‘Sashakt Mahila Rin Yojna’ is an initiative of Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank (HPSCB), which will provide loans to women for pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams, engage in livelihood activities, fulfil their day to day needs and uplift their families.
  • The scheme aims to empower women as the applicants need not to provide any assets or collateral as security against the loan amount.
  • Under the scheme, the bank offers credit of Rs 21,000, Rs 51,000 and Rs 1,01,000 at a relatively low-interest rate of 8.51 per cent.

Karnataka Bank hosts fintech partnership programme in Bengaluru

  • Karnataka Bank hosted the first edition of ‘KBL – FinOne’, a fintech partnership event, in Bengaluru with the objective of forging collaborations to develop innovative business models, providing seamless banking experience and offering a complete product suite.
  • Fintech companies participated in the programme.
  • The first edition of ‘KBL – FinOne’ featured over 30 speakers from various fintechs, delving into some of the interesting and relevant topics such as emerging lending models, neo-banks, platformisation, including no code – low code, embedded finance, cards infrastructure, payment innovations, etc.

Agreements and MoUs signed

MoU signed between Ministry of Culture and Canara Bank to facilitate provision of financial assistance to Veteran Artists

  • An MoU has been signed between the Ministry of Culture and Canara Bank for disbursal of financial assistance to the selected beneficiaries under the “Scheme for Financial Assistance for Veteran Artists” earlier known as “Scheme for Pension and Medical Aid to Artists”.
  • As per the MoU, master data of selected beneficiaries both for fresh as well as legacy data is to be uploaded by the Ministry in the online portal to be developed by the Canara Bank for this purpose.
  • Based on the scheme guidelines Canara Bank is required to work out the quarterly requirement of funds and raise the demand for the same to the Ministry.
  • Upon receipt of demand of funds from Canara Bank, the same will be released in advance on quarterly basis by the Ministry to the Bank for releasing the same on monthly basis to the eligible beneficiaries.
  • An artist aged 60 years and above who have contributed in the field of art and culture in their active age and whose annual income is not more than Rs. 48,000/- can apply under the scheme either through Art & Culture Department of concerned State Government/UT or Zonal Cultural Center.
  • Release of financial assistance on monthly basis to the eligible beneficiaries is one of the main objectives of the MoU entered with Canara Bank.
  • Under this scheme an amount of Rs. 26.00 crore has been allocated in B.E. for the year 2023-24.

Sat Pal Bhanoo appointed LIC MD

  • Sat Pal Bhanoo, Additional Zonal Manager (in-charge) of the Life Insurance Corporation of India’s zonal office in Bhopal, has been appointed as the insurance behemoth’s managing director.
  • Mr. Bhanoo has been appointed as Managing Director vice Siddhartha Mohanty, who is presently serving as chairperson, with effect from the date of assumption of charge of office and up to the date of his superannuation on December 31, 2025 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Bharat Dynamics Announces The Appointment Of A. Madhavarao As Chairman and Managing Director Of The Company

  • Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) announced that Ministry of Defence, Department of Defence Production, Government of India vide its Office Memorandum, conveyed the approval of the Competent Authority for the appointment of A. Madhavarao Director as Chairman and Managing Director on the Board of the company with effective from the date of his assumption of charge of the post till the date of his superannuation.

Jaguar Land Rover appoints Adrian Mardell as CEO for 3 years

  • Indian auto major Tata Motors wholly-owned subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Automotive PLC, UK, has appointed Adrian Mardell as chief executive officer for a three-year term.
  • Mardell was appointed the interim chief executive officer on November 16, 2022, having been chief financial officer and a member of the JLR Board of Directors for three years prior.

Coal Ministry bags “Best Engagement” Award for Procurement through GeM Portal

  • Coal Ministry has successfully set new benchmarks in the e-procurement ecosystem, creating a level playing field for stakeholders and fostering fair competition.
  • The Ministry has performed consistently well on GeM platform for two financial years in a row.
  • During the financial year 2023-24, the Coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have demonstrated unwavering confidence in GeM by publishing bids worth Rs. 21,500 crores.
  • The Ministry of Coal has been awarded in “Best Engagement” category, Coal India Limited (CIL) has been awarded “Rising Star” and NLC India Limited has been awarded in the “Timely Payments” category.

Indian team won bronze in Asian Surfing Championship

  • The India surf team, participating for the first time, in the Asian championship has bagged the bronze medal.
  • The icing on the cake was two Tamil Nadu youths breaking into the top 10 Asian rankings.
  • The Asian Surfing Championship was held at Thulusdhoo Island in Maldives, which saw participation from 18 countries.
  • The Surfing Federation of India had sent four senior surfers in the men’s category and two surfers in the under-18 category.
  • Five out of the six surfers were from Tamil Nadu.

AIFF introduces U-20 national championship for men

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF), after consultations with its competition committee, has decided to introduce an U-20 national championship for men.
  • The tournament, to be played annually, will be known as the U-20 National Football Championship.
  • The inaugural championship will be staged in January-February 2024.

International Moon Day 2023

  • The General Assembly declared International Moon Day, a United Nations-designated international day to be observed annually on 20 July, in its resolution 76/76 on “International cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space” in 2021.
  • International Moon Day marks the anniversary of the first landing by humans on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 lunar mission.
  • The celebrations will also consider the achievements of all States in the exploration of the Moon and raise public awareness of sustainable Moon exploration and utilization.
