National News
Government to issue two commemorative coins to mark G20 presidency
- India is set to issue two commemorative coins to mark its G20 presidency.
- The coins will be of the denominations of Rs 100 and Rs 75.
- The Rs 100 coin will bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the centre with the legend Satyamev Jayate in Devnagari on its obverse side.
- It will also be “flanked on the left periphery with the word ‘Bharat’ in Devnagari script and on the right periphery with the word ‘India’ in English.
- On the reverse side, the coin will bear the design of the logo of India’s G20 Presidency in the centre.
- The inscription Vasudhev Kutumbkam will be written in Devnagari script on the upper periphery of the coin and the inscription ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ in English shall be written on lower periphery of the coin.
- The Rs 75 coin too will have a similar design with the national emblem of Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar and the legend Satyamev Jayate in Devnagari on its obverse side and the design of the logo of India’s G20 Presidency on the obverse side.
- The standard weight of both the coins would be 35 grams each and they will be of 44 millimetres in diameter.
President Murmu Laid Foundation Stones/Inaugurates Various Projects at Rashtrapati Bhavan
- The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu completed one year in office.
- President Murmu participated in number of activities which includes
- Laid the foundation stone for redevelopment of Shiva Temple situated in the President’s Estate
- Laid the foundation stone for construction of a Cricket Pavilion at the Sports Ground of Rajendra Prasad Kendriya Vidyalaya, President’s Estate
- Inaugurated Navachara – an Artificial Intelligence enabled gallery developed by Rashtrapati Bhavan in collaboration with Intel India.
- Inaugurated Sutra-kala Darpan – a Textile Collection of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
- Inaugurated Janjatiya Darpan – a gallery to showcase the common and connecting cultural traits of various tribal communities.
- Launched the redeveloped website of the President of India and Rashtrapati Bhavan
- Received first copy of the book on Ayush Wellness Centre, President’s Estate, titled ‘Preserving Health, Embracing Traditions’.
- She also released a compilation of glimpses of past one year of Presidency in the form of an e-book (link https://rb.nic.in/rbebook.htm).

India and Argentina have agreed for a bilateral exchange of young researchers and Startups
- Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh when the Governor of Santa Fe province of Argentina, Omar Angel Perotti called on him, accompanied by a high-level delegation.
- India and Argentina have agreed for a bilateral exchange of young researchers and Startups, particularly in the field of Biotechnology and Agriculture.
- The two countries also decided to hold comprehensive talks between delegations comprising academia, R&D Institutes and Industry in the field of Science & Technology and Biotechnology.
- A total of 82 joint proposals were received.
- These are under the evaluation process.
- India and Argentina have an Inter-governmental Agreement to promote technical and scientific cooperation signed in 1985.
- The objective of this programme is to strengthen and expand relations between scientific communities, making possible the exchanges between Indian and Argentine research groups, in the framework of joint scientific and technological projects, selected by the parties.

India & UK conclude 11th round of talks for Free Trade Agreement
- India and United Kingdom have concluded the eleventh round of talks for the UK- India Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
- As with previous rounds, this was conducted in a hybrid fashion and a number of Indian officials travelled to London for negotiations and others attended virtually.
- As per the Joint Outcome Statement, technical discussions were held across 9 policy areas over 42 separate sessions.

SemiconIndia 2023 exhibition
- The ‘SemiconIndia 2023’ exhibition was inaugurated at Gandhinagar by Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel, in the presence of Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Electronics & IT, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
- This exhibition marks the start of Semicon India 2023’s second edition, organised by India Semiconductor Mission in close collaboration with industry and industry associations, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
- The event will showcase India’s journey towards becoming a global powerhouse in Semiconductor Design, Manufacturing, and Technology Development, aligned with India Semiconductor Mission’s vision.
- SemiconIndia 2023 will see prominent participation from major semiconductor giants like Micron Technology and Applied Materials, who have recently pledged substantial investments in India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
- Micron Technology’s investment alone amounts to $825 million in a Gujarat-based semiconductor assembly and test plant and Applied Materials has committed $400 million for their Engineering Collaborative Centre.
- The exhibition has a lineup of 150 stalls representing 80 leading companies to showcase their innovations and products.
- These diverse companies cover the entire spectrum of semiconductors, including supply chain, global Integrated Device Manufacturers, and domestic majors.
- In addition to showcasing innovations, the event will comprise of 25 startups who will showcase their innovations and connect with industry leaders.
- SemiconIndia 2023 will also witness participation from 23 countries and multiple states, with stalls from Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, displaying the collective effort of state governments in supporting the semiconductor industry’s growth.
- Institutions like SCL, ISRO and the Space Application Centre will have their showcases as well, and educational institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, BITS Pilani, Ganpat University, and Nirma University will actively participate, highlighting academia’s vital role in driving India’s semiconductor advancements.
- SemiconIndia 2023 is a testament to India’s strong commitment to building a robust semiconductor ecosystem.
- With its grand scale and innovative showcases, the exhibition proudly displays India’s potential as an emerging global hub for semiconductor excellence.
IIM Kozhikode to set up India-Japan Study and Research Centre
- The Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode has given its approval to the proposal of setting up an “India-Japan Study and Research Centre” for enhancing management education and research competencies in specific areas of mutual interest between both two countries.
- The initiative will provide for the transfer of knowledge and competencies in areas of mutual interest, thereby, facilitating research collaborations and student exchange programmes with various Japanese institutes of higher learning.
- This will also promote understanding of Japan in India and India in Japan through research, training, and other management development programmes.
7,000 Telangana farmers benefit from WEF’s ‘Saagu Baagu’ pilot
- Telangana’s “Saagu Baagu” (agricultural advancement) pilot project with the guidance of the World Economic Forum (WEF) has impacted the lives of over 7,000 chilli farmers in the State and the second phase of the project is set to take off.
- The impact on the lives of these farmers has been created by providing them access to agtech services such as AI-based advisories, soil testing, produce quality testing and e-commerce — under “Saagu Baagu” pilot project.
- WEF has also released a report “How AI and emerging technologies are shaping the future of agriculture in India’s Telangana State” based on the results of the pilot “Saagu Baagu” project.
- Artificial Intelligence for Agriculture Innovation (AI4AI) initiative is the crux of the “Saagu Baagu” project, addressing the challenges of fragmented technological infrastructure, high costs of operations, lack of access to data and limited technical expertise, while hampering the scale of their impact.
- AI4AI aims to transform the agriculture sector in India by promoting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.
- The “Saagu Baagu” project focuses on transformation of each agriculture value chain by easing agtech services delivery to the end customer through administrative, policy support and through digital public infrastructure.

- Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy laid the foundation stone for the construction of 50,793 houses for the poor women beneficiaries under Navaratnalu Pedalandariki Illu at 25 layouts in the R5 Zone of Amaravati.
- The housing project fulfilled Chief Minister’s long-cherished vision of providing affordable houses to 50,793 people, which would be constructed along with 45 social infrastructure projects at a cost of Rs 1,829.57 crore in the Amaravati capital region.

PhonePe to enable users to pay tax directly on app
- Fintech major PhonePe has launched the ‘Income Tax Payment’ feature on its application to enable taxpayers such as individuals and businesses to pay self-assessment and advance tax directly from within the PhonePe app.
- Users can now pay taxes with their credit card or over UPI.
- Users can pay taxes by tapping the ‘Income Tax’ icon on the PhonePe app homepage.
- Additionally, they can select the type of tax they would pay, the assessment year, and PAN Card details.
- Users then will have to enter the total tax amount and pay using the preferred mode of payment.
- The amount will be credited to the tax portal within two working days post successful payment.
- The company has partnered with a B2B payments and service provider, PayMate, to make this feature available.

NARCL acquired Rs 21K crore of bad loans in Q4FY23
- The National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL) has acquired stressed loans from three companies aggregating Rs. 21,349 crore in the fourth quarter of FY23.
- The stressed assets were acquired from Jaypee Infratech, SSA International and Helios PhotoVoltaic.
- No recovery has been made in these accounts as of July 17, 2023.

Punjab govt inks MoU with British Council to start English course for college students
- The Punjab government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with British Council Education India to start an English language training course for government college students.
- The ‘English for Work’ course lays a major thrust on all skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking – with a focus on grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.
- Under the MoU, the course will be launched as a pilot project in government colleges for 5,000 students from the academic session 2023-24.
- The ‘English for Work’ course will be an online blended learning course that uses a proven ‘flipped classroom’ approach to combine the flexibility of self-study with live interactive classes.

- The 5th Helicopter & Small Aircraft Summit is being organised at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh.
- The Summit is to be inaugurated by Union Minister for Civil Aviation & Steel Jyotiraditya Scindia.
- The Helicopter and Small Aircraft Summit is to be jointly organised by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Pawan Hans Ltd., and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry- FICCI.
- The theme of the summit is “Reaching the Last Mile: Regional Connectivity through Helicopters & Small Aircraft”.
- The objective of the summit includes enhancing the scope of the UDAN scheme in remote & hilly terrains.

WTO’s 13th Ministerial Conference
- UAE Minister for Foreign Trade Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi has been elected as the chair of the World Trade Organisation’s 13th Ministerial Conference that will be held in Abu Dhabi in February 2024.
- The announcement was made during the WTO General Council in Geneva, where Dr Al Zeyoudi met with the WTO director general Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
- The conference will be attended by representatives from the 164 countries and customs blocs that make up the WTO.
- It will review the performance of the trading system, make decisions on future work and set up the road map for the next conference.

ISSF Junior Shooting World Championship
- India’s Kamaljeet clinched Gold Medal in Men’s individual 50 metre Pistol Event at ISSF Junior Shooting World Championship 2023 at Changwon Shooting Range, Korea.
- India went in with a strong contingent of 90 shooters in the tournament and bagged 17 medals including 6 Golds, 6 Silvers and 5 Bronzes.
Lahiru Thirimanne announces retirement from international cricket
- Sri Lanka batter Lahiru Thirimanne has announced his retirement from international cricket after a 13-year career.
- Thirimanne, 33, played 44 Tests, 127 ODIs and 26 T20Is after making his international debut in 2010. He was part of three T20 World Cup campaigns, including Sri Lanka’s win in 2014, and played two ODI World Cups.
- He also led Sri Lanka in five ODIs.
