National News

Rajya Sabha passes bill to give tribal status to Hattee community in Himachal

  • Rajya Sabha passed a bill to accord the Scheduled Tribe status to the Hattee community in Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh.
  • The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Third Amendment) Bill 2022 was passed in the Upper House of Parliament by voice vote.
  • Lok Sabha had cleared the bill in December 2022.

Indian Railways

  • In India 14 States/ Union territories that are 100% electrified.
  • Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Odisha, Puducherry, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
  • A total of 24,383 Route kilometer (RKM) out of 59,096 Route kilometers (RKM) of Broad Gauge network of Indian Railways (IR) have been electrified in this 14 States/UT.
  • Out of which, 37,011 RKM have been electrified during the past nine years only.
  • At present, 850 ‘One Station One Product’ (OSOP) outlets are operational at 782 stations over Indian Railways.
  • ‘One Station One Product’ (OSOP) scheme has been launched by Indian Railways with objectives to promote ‘Vocal for Local’ vision of the Government of India, provide a market for local /indigenous products and create additional income opportunities for the marginalised sections of society.

RECEIC launched by Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav

  • The Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Industry Coalition (RECEIC) launched at the side event during the 4th Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group and Environment and Climate Ministers meeting in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • Conceptualized under India’s G20 Presidency, RECEIC is an industry-driven initiative aimed at promoting resource efficiency and circular economy practices globally.
  • The coalition is envisioned to be a self-sustaining entity that will continue to operate beyond India’s G20 Presidency, making a lasting impact on environmental sustainability.
  • 39 companies headquartered in 11 different countries have joined the coalition as its founding members.
  • As a collaborative platform, RECEIC aims to facilitate knowledge-sharing, best practice sharing, and sustainable practices among the participating industries.
  • The coalition has three guiding principles – Partnerships for impact, Technology Cooperation, and Finance for scale.
  • The RECEIC will be launched by the Hon’ Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav in the presence of the Commissioner on Environment from the European Union and Honorable Ministers from Canada, France, Italy, Denmark, Mauritius, and the United Arab Emirates.

India, UK hold first Defence & Military Tech Cooperation workshop

  • Senior government officials, sectoral experts and industry representatives came together in London for a first-of-its-kind discussion to explore synergies between India and the UK in the defence and military technology sector and work as a catalyst to enhance bilateral cooperation in the sphere.
  • The UK-India Defence and Military Technology Cooperation workshop, organised by the London-based think tank International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in partnership with India’s Bharat Shakti defence platform, explored collaborative defence research and industrial production partnerships between the two countries.
  • It covered topics such as the ‘Evolving strategic context of UK-India defence relations’, ‘Perspectives on India’s Atmanirbhar programme and the UK’s defence technology partnerships’ and boosting military and manufacturing partnerships against the backdrop of the India-UK 2030 Roadmap’s focus on ‘Defence and Security’ as a key pillar of bilateral ties.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurates new ITPO complex 'Bharat Mandapam' in Delhi

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated newly constructed the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) complex ‘Bharat Mandapam’ in New Delhi.
  • Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Rajnath Singh, Dr Jitendra Singh, actor Aamir Khan and several other dignitaries were also present at the inauguration ceremony of the new ITPO complex ‘Bharat Mandapam’ in Delhi.
  • The Prime Minister also felicitated the Shramjeevis at the ITPO complex in New Delhi.

PM Modi laid foundation stone and dedicates various development projects to the nation in Sikar

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation, various development projects in Sikar, Rajasthan.
  • The projects include the dedication of more than 1.25 lakh PM Kisan Samriddhi Kendras (PMKSKs), the launching of Urea Gold – a new variety of Urea coated with Sulphur and the onboarding of 1600 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) on Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
  • He also inaugurated five new medical colleges at Chittorgarh, Dholpur, Sirohi, Sikar, and Sri Ganganagar and laid the foundation stone for seven medical colleges across Rajasthan.
  • The Prime Minister inaugurated six Eklavya Model Residential Schools located in the districts of Udaipur, Banswara, Partapgarh, Dungarpur, and Kendriya Vidyalaya Tivri, Jodhpur.

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 14th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme worth over Rs 17,000 crore to more than 8.5 crores farmers on July 27, 2023.
  • Eligible farmers will receive Rs 2,000 installment under the scheme.
  • Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi is an initiative by the government of India that give farmers up to ₹6,000 per year as minimum income support.
  • The initiative was announced by Piyush Goyal during the 2019 Interim Union Budget of India on 1 February 2019.

Pradhan Mantri Vanbandhu KalyanYojana (PMVKY)

  • Ministry of Tribal Affairs is implementing ‘Pradhan Mantri Vanbandhu KalyanYojana (PMVKY)’ which includes many schemes for development and welfare of tribal communities.
  • The scheme has been approved for implementation during 2021-22 to 2025-26 with a total cost of Rs. 26135.46 crores.
  • The PMVKY is aimed at holistic development of tribal communities and tribal areas across the country focussing on integrated development of villages and capacity building through interventions in education and livelihood in convergence with State and Central TSP funds.
  • Scheme components covered under the PMVKY are as follows:

Razorpay launches account for Indian exporters, offers savings on overseas bank transfers

  • Fintech company Razorpay announced the launch of its MoneySaver Export Account to offer up to 50 per cent savings on international bank transfers for Indian exporters.
  • The company will help small and mid-size exporters open an account in a country of their choice and receive payments locally via Razorpay’s platform, hence avoiding chargebacks and transfer costs.
  • The initiative allows exporters to receive international bank transfers from 160 countries.
  • Users can access the feature on the Razorpay dashboard.
  • All payments will come with an electronic Foreign Inward Remittance Statement.
  • The service already supports over 10,000 exporters.

Odisha govt signs agreement with University of California, Berkeley for cooperation in research

  • The Odisha government signed an agreement with the University of California, Berkeley, in the US for cooperation in research, impact assessment of schemes and exchange of academic publication.
  • The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the visit of a delegation of the state government to Silicon Valley.
  • As part of the agreement, the state government and UC, Berkeley will collaborate on research projects, and jointly organise conferences and workshops.
  • Special emphasis will be on joint training workshops in high-tech areas and approximately 1,000 researchers are likely to be trained.
  • The MoU will also enable the state government to connect with UC, Berkeley’s illustrious alumni network for collaboration on various initiatives.
  • In the first phase, pilot projects will be launched in disaster management and climate control, healthcare, fintech, and agriculture.
  • Partnerships in emerging-tech areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning within the governance system will bring more transformation in public delivery mechanism.

India AI and Meta India sign MoU to foster collaboration in AI & Emerging Technologies

  • In order to foster collaboration in the field of AI and Emerging Technologies, ‘India AI’ – an IBD under Digital India Corporation and Meta, India have signed an MoU.
  • The MoU was signed by Shri Abhishek Singh, CEO of India AI, and Shri Shivnath Thukral, Director & Head of Public Policy, Meta in India.
  • The objective of the MoU is to establish a framework for collaboration and cooperation between ‘India AI’ and Meta in the field of Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies including to make Meta’s open-source AI models available for use by Indian AI ecosystem.

ReNew signs pact with Petronas's green unit Gentari for 5GW projects

  • Gurgaon-based ReNew has signed a 50:50 joint venture with Gentari, a green energy company of Malaysian energy major Petronas.
  • Under the proposed joint venture, Gentari and ReNew will explore investments for the development of renewable assets, including solar, wind and energy storage, totalling 5GW in India.
  • In May this year, Gentari picked up a 49 per cent equity stake in ReNew’s 403 MW peak power project.
  • Gentari is looking to build close to 30 GW in renewable energy capacity by 2030.

M&M picks up 3.5% stake in RBL Bank for Rs 417 crores

  • Diversified business conglomerate Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) has picked up a 3.53 per cent stake in private sector lender RBL Bank for Rs. 417 crores.

Hockey India announces 20-member junior men’s team for 4 Nations Tournament in Germany

  • Hockey India announced the 20-member Indian junior men’s hockey team that will participate in the 4 Nations Tournament from August 18 to 22 at Dusseldorf, Germany.
  • India will play against England, Spain, and hosts Germany in the tournament, which will be part of the team’s preparations for the all-important FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023, scheduled to be played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from December 5 to 16.
  • The team will be led by talismanic forwards Uttam Singh, as captain, and Boby Singh Dhami, as vice captain.
  • The goalkeeping department will be entrusted to the reliable duo of Mohith H S and Ranvijay Singh Yadav, while the defenders travelling to Germany are Sharda Nand Tiwari, Rohit, Amandeep Lakra, Amir Ali, Waribam Niraj Kumar Singh, and Yogember Rawat.

CRPF Foundation Day 2023

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Foundation Day is celebrated on July 27 every year to commemorate the formation of the central force on this day in 1939.
  • CRPF is an integral part of India’s internal security and one of the oldest Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
  • Originally constituted as the Crown Representative Police in 1939, CRPF was the internal combat force in India.
  • The force was renamed as CRPF by an Act of Parliament passed on December 28, 1949.

First Aadhaar enrolment centre for Indian Army via Army Postal Service inaugurated in Delhi

  • The first Permanent Aadhaar Enrolment Centre (PAEC) for Indian Army has been inaugurated in New Delhi.
  • The PAEC will facilitate Aadhaar-related services (enrolment and updation) for tri-services personnel (Defence and civil) and their dependents through their Field Post Offices (FPO) in 48 identified locations in the country.
  • All Command HQs, Corps HQs and selected FPOs are identified for the establishment of PAEC services.
