National News

Regional Symposium on Child Protection, Child Safety, and Child Welfare

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) organized the fourth one-day Regional Symposium on Child Protection, Child Safety, and Child Welfare at Darbhanga Hall, Central Coalfields Limited, Ranchi.
  • There were four participating states West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Bihar.
  • The Symposium was attended by more than 800 representatives from Child Welfare Committees (CWCs), Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs), Members of the Village Child Protection Committee (VCPC), and Anganwadi Workers.
  • The program is an aspect of a nationwide series of regional symposiums intended to increase awareness of child protection, child safety, and child welfare issues.
  • The program focused on the Amendments in the Juvenile Justice Act, Rules.
  • Its impact on adoption processes was highlighted in the experience shared by Prospective Adoptive Parents who received a quick resolution post the Amendment in September 2022.
  • For the first time, PM Cares for Children announced sponsorship for children up to 23 years of age.
  • Earlier under Child Protection Services, Rs. 2000 per month was offered for non-institutional childcare, but this has now been increased to Rs 4000 per month, further, the limit of only 40 children per district has been removed under Mission Vatsalya.

7th Meeting of Central Institute Body of AIIMS and Chintan Shivir

  • Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya addressed the 7th Meeting of the Central Institute Body (CIB) of AIIMS and Chintan Shivir at the National Institute for Health and Family Welfare.
  • CIB is the highest decision-making body of all AIIMS for finance, infrastructure, vacancy, recruitment, enforcement of policies, challenges and procurement.
  • The agenda of CIB meeting was to review compliance of decisions taken in earlier CIB meetings.

  • India and Bhutan have reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation and discussed ways to further strengthen it across diverse sectors. 
  • Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and his Bhutanese counterpart Aum Pema Choden co-chaired the India-Bhutan Development Cooperation Talks in New Delhi.
  • Both sides will continue to work to further strengthen such cooperation in keeping with the Joint Statement issued during the visit of the King of Bhutan to India in April 2023.

  • Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated the ‘Weekend Tourist Hub’ in front of the historic Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala.

UP Govt launches five DTH channels under PM e-Vidya program to enhance learning experience of children at home

  • The Uttar Pradesh Government has launched five DTH television channels under the PM e-Vidya program to enhance children’s learning experiences at home.
  • The initiative will enable children to focus on studies at home along with attending school, improving their learning outcomes.
  • Moreover, it will also allow teachers to learn new teaching methods.
  • The Union Government announced the PM e-Vidya program.
  • One of the components of the program was the launch of PM e-Vidya DTH television channels in the form of the One Class One Channel.
  • These channels, which are now available free of charge on DD Free Dish and Dish TV, bring supplementary education to children’s homes in their own language by providing learning resources on TV.

Punjab Cabinet approves new sports policy

  • The Punjab Cabinet approved the new sports policy, 2023, which lays emphasis on training, incentives, robust infrastructure, and jobs for athletes.
  • The new policy is the strategic blueprint to promote sports in the state by developing a pyramidal sports infrastructure from village, cluster, district and state levels with an adequate number of coaches and experts who will provide basic training, guidance in athletics, games and fitness at the cluster level.
  • The Cabinet also approved ”The Punjab Custom Milling Policy for Kharif 2023-24” as per which rice mills will be linked online to the procurement centres.
  • The paddy allocation to rice millers will be automatic through an online portal and paddy will be stored at the eligible rice mills as per their entitlement and agreement executed between the state agencies and the rice millers.

North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS)

  • North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) was launched on 15/12/2017 for 8 north eastern states and Ministry of Development of the North East Region is responsible for the scheme.
  • Under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) projects are sanctioned from the sectors relating to water supply, power, connectivity and specially the projects promoting tourism and social sector of primary and secondary sectors of education and health.
  • A total of 108 projects worth Rs.2273.44 crore have been sanctioned under NESIDS during the period from 2019-20 to 2022-23.

Liberty General Insurance Appointed as Lead Non-Life Insurer for Delhi under IRDAI's State Insurance Plan

  • Liberty General Insurance, one of the leading non-life insurance companies in India, has been appointed as the “Lead Insurer” for Delhi by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).
  • This appointment is part of IRDAI’s State Insurance Plan, which aims to enhance financial awareness and drive insurance inclusion in collaboration with other insurers.
  • IRDAI’s decision to identify Liberty General Insurance as the lead insurer (Non-Life) for Delhi is a strategic move to improve insurance awareness and penetration across the state.
  • The initiative aligns with IRDAI’s mission of “Insurance for All by 2047” and aims to ensure last-mile delivery of insurance services to the uninsured population of Delhi.

Agreements and MoUs signed

IGGL, GAIL sign interconnection agreement

  • Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) and GAIL India have signed an interconnection agreement to connect the North East Gas Grid (NEGG) of IGGL with the Barauni Guwahati Pipeline (BGPL) of GAIL.
  • The agreement was signed by IGGL chief executive officer Ajit Kumar Thakur and GAIL’s zonal chief general manager R Choudhury.
  • The interconnection agreement will facilitate connection of the NEGG with the BGPL at three locations – Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and Baihata and Panikhaiti in Assam.
  • The interconnection agreement will pave the way for making the NEGG a part of the National Gas Grid.
  • The pipeline for interconnection will be laid by GAIL at an estimated cost of Rs 15.16 crore.
  • The amount will be reimbursed by IGGL to GAIL.
  • IGGL is laying the 1,656km-long NEGG at an estimated project cost of Rs 9,265 crore.
  • The project has so far achieved a physical progress of 75 per cent with scheduled mechanical completion of Phase I by March 2024.

106 MoUs signed on the occasion of Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam 2023

  • The Ministry of Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship signed 106 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with various esteemed organizations and institutions, on the occasion of the Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam 2023 and the 3rd anniversary of the National Education Policy.
  • The MoUs encompass partnerships with both public and private entities to foster innovation, research, and knowledge exchange in multiple domains, ushering in a new era of collaboration in education and industry-academia linkages.

India to host World Coffee Conference for first time in September

  • India would host the fifth World Coffee Conference (WCC) for the first time in Asia from September 25 to 28 in Bengaluru.
  • WCC also announced tennis player Rohan Bopanna as its brand ambassador.
  • Producers, curers, roasters, exporters, policy makers and researchers from 80-plus countries would gather at WCC 2023.

ISRO launches PSLV-C56 carrying 7 satellites from Sriharikota

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched C56 (PSLV-C56) with seven co-passenger satellites from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota.
  • This PSLV flight marks the 58th overall and the 17th using the Core Alone configuration.
  • The upper stage of the rocket would be placed in lower orbit after injecting all the satellites to assure its shorter orbital life.
  • PSLV-C56 / DS-SAR is the Dedicated Commercial Mission of New Space India Limited (NSIL) for ST Engineering, Singapore.
  • DS-SAR, a Radar Imaging Earth Observation satellite is the primary satellite for the mission.
  • In addition to this, there are six co-passenger customer satellites also belonging to Singapore.
  • All satellites would be injected into a 535 km circular with 5 orbital inclination.
  • DS-SAR satellite is developed under a partnership between DSTA (representing the Government of Singapore) and ST Engineering.
  • DS-SAR carries a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

Centre Launches ULLAS Mobile Application To Facilitate Widespread Access To Basic Literacy

  • ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) mobile application was launched at the Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, to facilitate widespread access to basic literacy.
  • On the sidelines, the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the logo, slogan ‘Jan Jan Sakshar’ and the mobile application of ULLAS: Nav Bharat Saksharta Karyakram at the Bharat Mandapam.
  • ULLAS mobile application marks a significant milestone in harnessing the potential of technology to facilitate widespread access to basic literacy.
  • This user-friendly and interactive app is available both on Android and IOS and will serve as a digital gateway for learners to engage in diverse learning resources through the DIKSHA portal of NCERT.
  • The ULLAS app can be used for registration of learners and volunteers either through self-registration or by surveyors.

India’s tiger population rises

  • India’s tiger population increased to 3,682 in 2022, up from 2,967 in 2018.
  • This is an upward revision from April this year, when a minimum of 3,167 animals were estimated by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), which coordinates the quadrennial tiger census.
  • This also indicates significant growth over the last decade; there were 2,226 tigers reported in 2014, up from 1,706 in 2010.
  • In 2022, the maximum number of tigers, 785, were reported to be in Madhya Pradesh, followed by Karnataka (563), Uttarakhand (560), and Maharashtra (444).
  • Nearly a quarter of the tigers were reportedly outside protected areas.
  • India’s tigers are largely concentrated in 53 dedicated tiger reserves spread across 75,796 square km, spanning about 2.3% of India’s total land area.
  • The reserves with the maximum number of tigers were at the Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand, which reported 260 animals, followed by Bandipur (150), and Nagarhole (141), both in Karnataka.

  • Indian-American policy expert Nisha Biswal is confirmed by the Senate to serve as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a US finance agency.
  • Ms. Biswal will serve as the Deputy CEO of the United States International Development Finance Corporation.
  • She has a high-profile career of over 30 years of experience in US foreign policy and international development programmes within the White House; US Congress and the private sector.
  • Ms. Biswal currently holds the position of Senior Vice President for International Strategy and Global Initiatives at the US Chamber of Commerce, overseeing the US-India Business Council and US-Bangladesh Business Council.

Asian Youth (boys and girls) and Junior (men and women) Weightlifting Championships

  • India’s Sanapathi Guru Naidu and M Tomchou Meetei claimed silver and bronze medals respectively in 55kg men’s youth category in the Asian Youth (boys and girls) and Junior (men and women) Weightlifting Championships.
  • Mukund Santosh Aher also secured a medal for India, bagging silver in the 55kg Junior category.
  • The medals are being awarded to the first three winners in three categories, i.e. snatch, clean and jerk, and total weight category.
  • The competition features 220 athletes in both youth and junior categories from 18 Asian countries.

World Day against Trafficking in Persons 2023

  • World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed on July 30 every year to raise awareness about the trends in human trafficking identified by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
  • It also aims to put pressure on governments, law enforcement agencies and civil society to strengthen the prevention of trafficking and the identification and support of victims.
  • World Day Against Trafficking in Persons was adopted at a high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/68/192.
  • The day was first observed in 2014.
  • Theme – “Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind”

World Ranger Day

  • World Ranger Day, celebrated on July 31, serves as a special occasion to pay tribute and show gratitude to the courageous men and women who devote their lives to safeguarding wildlife and preserving our precious natural resources.
  • The origins of World Ranger Day can be traced back to the International Ranger Federation (IRF), an organisation established in 1992 to promote and support the work of park rangers worldwide.
  • The day was first observed in 2007 in memory of eight rangers who tragically lost their lives while on duty in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Indian Army dedicates Amrit Sarovar in Arunachal Pradesh's Tenga Valley

  • The Indian Army, in collaboration with the District Administration, West Kameng District, inaugurated the Amrit Sarovar at Tenga Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, as part of the government’s Mission Amrit Sarovar initiative.
  • The Amrit Sarovar project, aligned with the guidelines of the Government of India, focuses on rainwater harvesting and community empowerment.
  • With the objective of conserving rainwater, the project will play a role in ensuring water security for the region.
  • The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of the General Officer Commanding of Gajraj Corps local formation based at Rupa, and the District Commissioner (DC) of West Kameng district.
  • They unveiled the multi-purpose facility, which stands as a symbol of seamless civil-military fusion dedicated to the overall development of the area. Constructed with the support of the local administration, the Amrit Sarovar showcases the collaborative efforts of the Indian Army and the District Administration.

INS ‘Khanjar,’ indigenous Khukri class Missile Corvette reaches Trincomalee

  • Indian Naval Ship ‘Khanjar,’ an indigenous Khukri class Missile Corvette reached Trincomalee as part of a three-day visit.
  • The Commanding Officer of the INS Khanjar met Commander of Eastern Naval Area of Sri Lanka to enhance professional ties.
  • The crew also paid a visit to Anbu Ellam Child Development Centre, where essential items were gifted by the Indian Navy.
  • The crew will engage in social activities such as Yoga sessions and beach cleaning.
  • Additionally, the ship will be open for school children and the public, fostering people-to-people connections.
  • This visit signifies India’s commitment to strengthening maritime security cooperation in the region, building on the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and SAGAR doctrine.
