National News

Government to spend ₹2 crores per km of roads along China border

  • The government is likely to spend over ₹2 crores on each kilometre of road to be constructed along the China border in Uttarakhand and Sikkim under the Vibrant Village Programme (VVP).
  • In the past five months, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sanctioned 113 roads under the VVP in Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim, to improve connectivity in areas along the China border.
  • While 105 roads have been sanctioned in Arunachal Pradesh, 5 roads in Uttarakhand and 3 roads in Sikkim have also been approved.
  • There are at least 168 villages along the border with China that do not have any road connectivity.
  • 96 km of roads are to be built a cost of ₹119 crores at Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand.
  • Each kilometre of road is expected to cost ₹2.7 crore.
  • Once constructed, the “asset” will have to be maintained by the State government.
  • In Sikkim, around 73 km of roads and 350 metres of steel bridges have been sanctioned under the VVP at the Chungthang and Mangan block in north Sikkim at a cost of ₹96 crores.
  • Each kilometre of road construction will cost ₹2.4 crore.

4th Meeting of ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement Joint Committee was held in Malaysia

  • The 4th Joint Committee meeting for the review of AITIGA (ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement) was held in Putrajaya, Malaysia was co-chaired by Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, India and Ms. Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, Deputy Secretary General (Trade), Ministry of Investment, Trade & Industry, Malaysia.
  • The delegates from India and all 10 ASEAN countries participated in the discussions.
  • The Joint Committee undertaking the review work has met four times so far.
  • The Joint Committee finalised its Terms of Reference and the Negotiating Structure for the review negotiations in its first two meetings and initiated the negotiations for review of AITIGA from its third meeting held in New Delhi.
  • A total of 8 Sub-Committees have been constituted for dealing with different policy areas of the Agreement in the review and out of these, 5 Sub-Committees have started their discussions.
  • All the 5 Sub-Committee reported the outcomes of their discussions to the 4th AITIGA Joint Committee.
  • Four of these Sub-Committees dealing with ‘National Treatment and Market Access’, ‘Rules of Origin’, ‘Standards, Technical Regulations and Conformity Assessment Procedures’ and ‘Legal and Institutional Issues’ also met physically in Putrajaya, Malaysia alongside the 4th AITIGA Joint Committee.
  • The Sub-Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary had met earlier.
  • The Joint Committee provided necessary guidance to the Sub-Committees.
  • ASEAN is one of the major trade partners of India with a share of 11% in India’s global trade.
  • The bilateral trade stood at $122.67 billion during 2023-24.
  • The upgradation of AITIGA will further boost bilateral trade.
  • Both sides would next meet for the 5th Joint Committee meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia.

19th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests was held in New York

  • India participated in the 19th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
  • During the session, India highlighted the Country’s significant advancements in forest conservation and sustainable forest management which led to consistent increase in forest cover over the past fifteen years.
  • Globally, India ranks third in the net gain, in average annual forest area, between 2010 and 2020.
  • The UN Forum on Forests is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with universal membership.
  • Since its establishment in 2000, the Forum has set many milestones including the first UN Forest Instrument in 2007, the Global Forest Financing Facilitation Network (GFFFN) in 2015, and adoption of the first UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030 and its six Global Forest Goals in 2017.
  • 2024 marks the 19th session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF19).
  • India also shared the introduction of the ‘Green Credit Program’, designed to incentivize entities to take up tree plantation and restoration of degraded forest lands, which aims to further strengthen climate action initiatives.
  • The Indian delegation was led by Jitendra Kumar, Director General of Forests and Special Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

  • Nepal’s legendary mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa made history by breaking his record for the highest number of ascents of Everest as he scaled the world’s highest peak for the 29th time.

GTRI: India's imports from FTA partners up 38% during 2019-24 fiscal years

  • According to Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), India’s imports of goods from countries with which it has a free trade agreement like the UAE, South Korea and Australia grew about 38 per cent during 2019-24 fiscal years to $187.92 billion.
  • On the other hand, the country’s exports to the FTA (free trade agreement) partners rose 14.48 per cent to $122.72 billion in 2023-24, from $107.20 billion in 2018-19.
  • From FY’2019 to FY’2024, India’s imports increased by 37.97 per cent, from $136.20 billion to $187.92 billion.
  • India’s exports to the UAE increased by 18.25 per cent to $35.63 billion in 2023-24 as against $30.13 billion in 2018-19, while imports surged 61.21 per cent, from $29.79 billion in FY2019 to $48.02 billion in the last fiscal.
  • The FTA between India and the UAE came into effect in May, 2022.
  • Similarly, the country’s exports to Australia, with which the interim trade pact came into force in December, 2022, more than doubled to $7.94 billion in 2023-24 from $3.52 billion in 2018-19.
  • Imports from Australia grew 23.06 per cent from $13.13 billion to $16.16 billion in the last fiscal.
  • Exports to 10-nation southeast Asian bloc ASEAN, increased by about 10 per cent to $41.21 billion in the last fiscal from $37.47 billion in FY-2019.
  • Imports jumped by 34.3 per cent from $59.32 billion to $79.67 billion.
  • India’s outbound shipments to South Korea rose by 36.38 per cent during the last five fiscal years from $4.71 billion to $6.42 billion and imports increased by 26.12 per cent from $16.76 billion to $21.14 billion.
  • India and South Korea’s comprehensive economic partnership agreement came into force in
  • Exports to Japan showed a modest increase of 6.06 per cent, from $4.86 billion in 2018-19 to $5.16 billion in 2023-24, while imports rose by 38.56 per cent from $12.77 billion to $17.70 billion.
  • India-Japan FTA was implemented in 2011.
  • Overall, India ranked 17th globally in exports, with a 1.8 per cent share in world trade.
  • On the import front, the country is ranked 8th, holding a 2.8 per cent share in global trade.
  • India’s merchandise exports in 2023-24 fell 3.11 per cent to $437.1 billion, while imports declined by 5.4 per cent to $677.2 billion in the last fiscal.

UAE-India CEPA Council signed MoU with Indian Chamber of Commerce to enhance bilateral relations

  • The UAE-India CEPA Council (UICC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), commencing a strategic partnership to bolster economic and trade ties between the UAE and India.
  • In alignment with their respective mandates, the UICC and the ICC will synergize efforts, resources, and ideas, and collaborate on increasing awareness within the UAE and India of the significant potential of the UAE-India bilateral economic partnership.
  • The MoU will help establish a broad-based partnership between the participants, focused on the public promotion of the UAE-India bilateral economic partnership and the UAE-India CEPA in particular.
  • Both organisations will collaborate on increasing awareness within the UAE and India regarding the significant potential of the bilateral economic partnership, highlighting opportunities for UAE and Indian companies to leverage the UAE-India CEPA, and mobilising key UAE and Indian private sector stakeholders to support increased economic, investment, and trade engagement between the two nations.
  • They will also engage in dialogue and information sharing, develop avenues for member awareness, explore the hosting of joint events and facilitate member interactions, promote organisational roles, and seek opportunities to expand tangible cooperation between the organisation’s respective leaderships.
  • In February 2022, India became the first country with which the UAE signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
  • Bilateral trade has increased by approximately 15 per cent since the entry into force of the CEPA on May 1, 2022.

CMFRI team identifies two new species of needlefish

  • Researchers at Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) here have scientifically described two new species of needlefish from Indian waters.
  • They found that the previously identified flat needlefish (Ablennes hians) is actually a complex of at least three distinct species.
  • Genetic and molecular analysis and taxonomic examination confirmed that these newly-identified species have unique characteristics.
  • The new fishes have been named Ablennes joseberchmansis, after the alma mater – St. Berchamn’s College, of the CMFRI researcher Toji Thomas and his teacher, and Ablennes gracalii, after the researcher’s mother Grace and his friend Alina.
  • Found abundantly along the Indian coast, these fishes are pelagic resources and are available for fishing in the upper waters (0-20 metres depth).
  • The research team also included Shijin Ameri, Badarul Sijad and K. K. Sajikumar from CMFRI.
  • Their findings were published in the journal of Regional Studies in Marine Science.

Rizwan Koita Appointed as the NABH Chairperson

  • Rizwan Koita, Director of Koita Foundation and co-founder of CitiusTech, has been appointed as the chairperson of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH).
  • NABH is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India (QCI) that is responsible for setting benchmarks for quality, accrediting and certifying hospitals and other healthcare organisations.
  • Koita has been a Board member of NABH over the past 2 years and has been actively involved with the Digital Health initiatives at NABH.
  • NABH, as an organisation, has been accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (lSQua) and is also its Institutional Member.
  • Additionally, NABH standards for hospitals have been accredited by ISQua.
  • These standards have been adopted by over 20,000 hospitals across India.

  • M.Selvarasau, Member of Parliament from Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu passed away at 67.

Indian Naval Ship visited Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

  • Two Indian Naval ships (INS) INS Delhi and INS Shakti under the command of R Adm Rajesh Dhankhar, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet arrived at Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia as part of the Indian Navy’s Operational Deployment.
  • The ships were accorded a warm welcome by the Royal Malaysian Navy and the High Commission of India in Malaysia.
  • The Indian Navy ships, on completion of harbour visit, will also participate in a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX)/ PASSEX at sea with ships of the Royal Malaysian Navy.
  • This is aimed to enhance the degree of interoperability between the two Navies, which was reiterated during the recently concluded MILAN 2024 and Ex Samudra Lakshmana 2024.
  • INS Delhi is the first indigenously designed and built Project-15 class guided missile destroyer and INS Shakti is a Fleet Support Ship, both ships are part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet.

  • INS Kiltan arrived at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam and received a warm welcome by Vietnam People’s Navy and Indian Embassy.
  • The visit is part of the Operational Deployment of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet.
  • This visit is poised to further strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two maritime nations.
  • The visit will conclude with a Maritime Partnership Exercise at sea between the Indian Navy and Vietnam People’s Navy.
