3rd Capacity Building Program for the Civil Servants of the Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka commences at Mussoorie

  • The 3rd capacity building program for senior civil servants of Sri Lanka organized by the National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG) commenced at Mussoorie, Uttarakhand.
  • The program is being organized from 13 May 2024 to 24 May 2024.
  • The program is being attended by 41 senior civil servant officers from Sri Lanka.
  • The NCGG, an autonomous institution under the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, is committed to action research, studies, and capacity building in public policy and governance at both the national and international levels.
  • NCGG’s efforts align with the Indian philosophy ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’e., “The world is one family” and emphasizes on strengthening bilateral ties and fostering cooperation with other countries.

HDFC Bank unveils PIXEL range of digital credit cards

  • HDFC Bank has announced the introduction of ‘PIXEL’, an end-to-end, mobile app-based customisable DIY digital card range, targeted at customers characterised by “digital fluency, unique preferences and distinct financial behaviours.”
  • PIXEL is a first-of-its- kind range of digital credit card series that offers seamless app-based issuance, complete digital lifecycle management, user engagement and digital servicing.
  • It will be offered in 2 variants – PIXEL Play and PIXEL Go.
  • Both card variants offer up to 50 days’ credit-free period.

Razorpay unveils new employee health insurance policy with sibling coverage, HIV/AIDS treatments

    • Razorpay has introduced a new employee health insurance policy, under which coverage will be provided to employees’ siblings, as well as for vital treatment like for HIV/AIDS.
    • The new policy has also raised the company’s insurance costs by 3 to 5 per cent.
    • It will allow employees of the omnichannel payments and banking platform for businesses to customise their health insurance plans according to their individual needs, including defining their own families and encompassing live-in or LGBTQIA+ partners as spouses.
    • The base amount of the insurance is ₹5 lakh and the company pays about ₹30,000 to 40,000 per person.
    • The policy also has a top-up programme where the employees can contribute nominal premiums to the base insurance and take further advantage of the coverage.
    • The insurance policy covers all full-time team members, including all acquired entities, and their families.
    • According to the fintech major, the sibling insurance inclusion is a rare provision that less than 1 per cent of organisations in India currently offer, as per data from Prudent’s database.
    • The health insurance can encompass coverage for adopted children or a third child.
    • Additionally, it incorporates coverage for HIV/AIDS and PCOS.
    • It also eliminates co-pays for employees, their spouses, and children covered in the policy, except for the employee’s parents, for whom there’s still a 10 per cent co-pay.
    • The policy offers 60 per cent discount on elite membership as well as coverage for day-to-day medical expenses, including regular health check-ups, doctor’s consultations, diagnostic tests, and OPD expenses.
    • It also provides enhanced maternity benefits, including an increased C-section limit of ₹1 lakh, from the earlier limit of ₹75,000. 

Public sector banks' total profit crosses ₹1.4 trillion in FY24

  • Public sector banks’ cumulative profit crossed ₹1.4 trillion in the financial year ended March 2024, recording a growth of 35 per cent over the previous year on a high base of ₹1 trillion.
  • The 12 Public Sector Banks (PSBs) together had earned a net profit of ₹1,04,649 crores in 2022-23.
  • Out of the total profit State Bank of India (SBI) alone contributed over 40 per cent of the total earnings which earned a profit of ₹61,077 crores 22 per cent higher than the previous financial year (₹50,232 crores).

Moody’s Expects India to Grow 6.6% in FY25

  • According to the Moody’s rating, The Indian economy is expected to grow at 6.6 per cent in the current financial year 2024-25, fuelled by strong credit demand that will support the NBFC sector’s profitability.

  • She rose to her career-best ranking by 15 spots to 24, following her success in the Saudi Smash.

Canadian Nobel-Winning Author Alice Munro passes away

  • Nobel Prize–winning Canadian writer Alice Munro, whose exquisitely crafted tales of the loves, ambitions and travails of small-town women in her native land made her a globally acclaimed master of the short story passed away at the age of 92.
  • She published more than a dozen collections of short stories and was honoured with the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013.

Birubala Rabha passes away

  • Padma Shri awardee Birubala Rabha, renowned for her fight against witch hunting, passed away at 75.
  • She was Born in remote Thakurvila village in Goalpara of Assam in 1949.
  • She formed ‘Mission Birubala’ in 2012 to create awareness among people against the social evil and all forms of superstitious beliefs, besides providing rehabilitation to the victims of witch hunting menace. The organisation has saved lives of 55 victims so far in Majuli, Kokrajhar, Goalpara and Tinsukia districts.
  • Recognising her work to protect lives in rural India, she was conferred with the fourth highest civilian award of the country ‘Padma Shri’ in 2021.
  • Under the project ‘1,000 Women’, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 by The Swiss Peace, Switzerland.
  • She received Honorary Doctorate from Gauhati University, besides being recognised with innumerable awards by various organisations.

P Shyaamnilkhil becomes India's 85th Grandmaster

  • P Shayaamnikhil became India’s 85th Grandmaster by completing his third and final GM norm in the just-concluded Dubai Police Masters chess tournament, ending a 12-year-wait for the player who took to the sport as an eight-year-old.
  • He needed just one win and eight draws to complete the long-overdue GM title which he achieved in the tournament.
  • The 31-year-old conjured the requisite 2500 ELO rating points, making his first GM norm in Mumbai Mayors Cup 2011 and the second one sometime later during the Indian championship as a 19-year-oldbut for the third one, he had to wait for 12 years.
  • Vaishali Rameshbabu has become India’s 84th grandmaster after surpassing 2500 rating during the 2023 IV Elllobregat Open.

  • International Day of Families is annually observed on May 15.
  • The 2024 International Day of Families aims to raise awareness of how climate change impacts families and the role families can play in climate action.
  • In 1993, the United Nation General Assembly decided in a resolution (A/RES/47/237) that 15 May of every year should be observed as The International Day of Families.

UN Proclaims 25 May as World Football Day

  • The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 25th May as the World Football Day, by adopting a resolution during the 80th plenary meeting of the General Assembly in New York.
  • The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament in history with the representation of all regions as part of the 1924 Summer Olympic Games, held in Paris.
  • The resolution was passed unanimously by the 193-member General Assembly.

Defence Secretary releases commemorative coin on MDL’s completion of 250 years

  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) celebrates the completion of 250 years on 14 May 2024, commemorating an extraordinary journey, spanning over two and a half centuries.
  • From a humble beginning as a small dry dock in 1774, to its incorporation in 1934, and subsequently, its stewardship under the Government of India since 1960, completion of 250 years.
  • To mark this occasion of immense significance MDL organized a series of events including inauguration of adjacent land acquired from MPA, launch of prototype of indigenous midget submarine ‘Arowana’, commissioning of Solar Electric Hybrid boat, release of MDL’s Commemorative Coin which marks the 250 years completed and conducting a daylong technical seminar.
  • The Defence Secretary formally inaugurated the contiguous piece of land acquired from the Mumbai Port Authority.
  • This facility would be developed for simultaneous construction & outfitting of New Builds, Repairs / Refits of various types of vessels.
  • The Defence secretary also commissioned the Solar Electric Hybrid boat with top speed of 11 Knots designed and co-developed with indigenous technology partner.
  • The running cost is almost 1/10th of a diesel boat and also has a very low maintenance cost.
  • He also commissioned a 24 pax Fuel Cell Electric Ferry named “SUCHI”, conceptualized by MDL & co-developed with indigenous technology partner.

7th edition of joint counter terrorism exercise Tarkash was held between India and USA

  • The 7th edition of the Indo-U.S. joint counter terrorism exercise Tarkash, was held between the elite National Security Guard (NSG) and the U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF).
  • The three-week exercise encompassed intense training and mock drills in urban counter terrorism scenarios will conclude at Kolkata.
  • The previous edition of the exercise was conducted at Chennai in January 2023.
  • The NSG and the SOF conduct regular exchanges in various aspects of the counter terrorist operations, as part of bilateral mutual counter terrorism capacity building initiatives and mechanism.
