“Accelerating Progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”

  • NITI Aayog is organizing a workshop on “Accelerating Progress on Sustainable Development Goals for the domestic adoption and implementation” at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.
  • Workshop is being organized in association with the Institute for Human Development (IHD) and Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP).
  • This will be fifth in the series of G20 Feeder Thematic Workshops planned on 10 themes discussed in the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration (NDLD).
  • The subject experts, representatives of think-tank, academia, and other stakeholde₹will discuss key topics, each dedicated to advancing the progress on the SDGs in India.
  • The inaugural plenary session, titled “Nutrition, Health, and Education: Prime Enable₹of Human Capital and Prosperity,” will be followed by three below mentioned segments, which will delve into specific SDG priorities.
  • Eliminating Hunger and Malnutrition: Enabling access to affordable, safe, nutritious and healthy diets and strengthening research cooperation on climate-resilient and nutritious grains.
  • Ensuring Good Health for all: – Focused on ways to strengthen services to advance good health, including preparedness for pandemics and infectious disease control and fostering the one-health approach.
  • Delivering Quality Education: – Strategies for providing inclusive, high-quality education and skills training.

National Efficient Cooking Programme and Energy Efficient Fans Programme

  • Union Power Minister R K Singh announced two programmes of state-owned EESL to distribute one crore energy efficient ceiling fans and 20 lakh induction cookstoves in the country.
  • EESL, a joint venture of public sector undertakings under Ministry of Power, launched its National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP) and Energy Efficient Fans Programme (EEFP).
  • These initiatives are aimed at revolutionizing cooking practices in India and emphasizing on the importance and urgency of energy efficient fans.
  • As part of these programmes, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) will distribute 1 crore efficient BLDC (Brush-less Direct Current) fans and 20 lakh energy-efficient induction cookstoves nationwide.
  • The cookstoves offer a cost advantage of 25-30 per cent over traditional cooking methods, promising both energy savings and cost-effective cooking solutions.
  • With this, EESL seeks to reduce the environmental impact of cooking methods, ensuring cleaner air and improved health for citizens.
  • EESL has also partnered with Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) for the large-scale deployment of induction cooktops.

Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative

  • The entertainment channel COLORS has collaborated with the Ministry of Women and Child Development to support the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative to bring societal change.
  • The collaboration will help to raise awareness around girl child abandonment through their latest show Doree.
  • Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative in changing the way girl child is perceived. The channel will also raise awareness of our Child Helpline Number 1098 amongst viewe₹and provide the much-needed popular support to this initiative.

2nd World Local Production Forum

  • The World Local Production Forum (WPLF) being held in The Hague, the Netherlands, is a regular global platform that encourages discussions and partnerships aimed at strengthening sustainable, quality, eco-friendly local production and technology transfer.
  • The World Local Production Platform is a platform created at the initiative of WHO with the aim of increasing access to medicines and other health technologies.
  • This initiative is driven by the shared goal of improving access to quality, safe, and effective health products and technologies while safeguarding global, regional, and national health security, even during health emergencies.
  • The Local Production and Assistance Unit serves as the WLPF’s Secretariat.
  • The second edition of this initiative will convene high level participation from diverse sectors, such as government, international organizations, finance institutions, private sector, civil societies, and academia, and include virtual participants to attend from around the world.
  • Shri Bhagwant Khuba, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, will lead an Indian team to the 2nd World Local Production Forum (WLPF).
  • The first World Local Production Forum (WLPF) was conducted virtually from June 21 to 25, 2021.

3rd India-Guatemala Foreign Office Consultation

  • The 3rd India-Guatemala Foreign Office Consultation was held in New Delhi.
  • Secretary (East) in Ministry of External Affairs, Saurabh Kumar co-chaired the meeting with Vice Minister of Guatemala, Karla Gabriela Samayoa Recari.
  • They reviewed bilateral ties, and agreed to further strengthen relations in areas of trade, agriculture, health, pharmaceuticals, and development partnership.
  • They also discussed cooperation in multilateral bodies, and exchanged views on regional and international issues.

1st Australia India Education and Skill Council meet

  • The First Australia India Education and Skill Council (AIESC) meeting was held at IIT Gandhinagar in Gujarat.
  • The Ministry of Education said that the AIESC, earlier the Australian India Education Council (AIEC), is a bi-national body established in 2011 to guide the strategic direction of the education, training, and research partnerships between the two countries.
  • The meeting was jointly chaired by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Australian Education Minister Jason Clare and Brendan O’Connor, Minister for Skills and Training, Government of Australia.
  • This meeting will provide a platform for academic and skill experts to discuss a wide range of mutually agreed priorities, with the ultimate aim of shaping the future of education and skilling in both our nations.

State News

‘Ama Odisha Nabin Odisha’ Programme

  • Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the ‘Ama Odisha Nabin Odisha’ programme in three more districts of the State.
  • The ambitious programme, which aims at strengthening the infrastructure for building a new and strong Odisha, was rolled out in Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur and Malkangiri districts.
  • Under the programme, ₹90.50 crore has been sanctioned for the four constituencies of Mayurbhanj district.
  • The constituencies are Jashipur, Karanjia, Saraskana and Rairangpur.
  • The funds will be spent on 2427 projects in 181 panchayats of 13 blocks of these constituencies.
  • Similarly, ₹69 crore has been sanctioned for three constituencies of Sambalpur district.
  • These constituencies are Rairakhol, Rengali and Kuchinda.
  • As many as 1801 projects will be undertaken in 138 gram panchayats of 9 blocks.
  • Similarly, ₹55.50 crore has been sanctioned for two constituencies of Malkangiri district.
  • These constituencies are Chitrokonda and Malkangiri.
  • The funds will be spent on 1430 projects in 111 gram panchayats of 7 blocks.

Schemes

PMGKAY scheme

  • The Union government’s Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) to provide 5 kg of free foodgrains per month to 81 crore Indians will be extended for another five years.
  • PMGKAY is a food security welfare scheme announced by the Government of India in March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
  • The program is operated by the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
  • To feed the poorest citizens of India by providing grain through the Public Distribution System to all the priority households (ration card holder and those identified by the Antyodaya Anna Yojana scheme).
  • PMGKAY provides 5 kg of rice or wheat (according to regional dietary preferences) per person/month and 1 kg of dal to each family holding a ration card.
  • Under the food law, rice is provided at ₹3 per kg, wheat at ₹2 per kg, and coarse grains at ₹1 per kg.

Government authorises SBI to issue and encash Electoral Bonds

  • The Government of India has authorised the State Bank of India, in the 29th Phase of sale, to issue and encash Electoral Bonds through its 29 Authorised Branches with effect from 6th to 20th of November.
  • The Electoral Bonds shall be valid for 15 calendar days from the date of issue and no payment shall be made to any payee Political Party if the Electoral Bond is deposited after expiry of the validity period.
  • The Electoral Bond deposited by an eligible Political Party in its account shall be credited on the same day.

Agreements and MoUs signed

India-France Letter of Intent

  • The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions and M/o Public Sector Transformation & the Civil Service of the French Republic signed the Letter of Intent for Cooperation in the field of Public Administration and Administrative Reforms for three years.
  • The Letter of Intent was signed by V. Srinivas, Secretary on behalf of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances and H.E. Mr. Thierry Mathou, Ambassador of France to India at a ceremonial function in New Delhi.
  • The Letter of Intent seeks to strengthen the bilateral partnership between the two countries through exchange visits focused on administrative reforms, good governance webinars, research publications, institutional exchanges, capacity building programs and replication of good governance practices.
  • The roadmap for the bilateral collaboration will be drawn up by a Joint Working Group that will be established under the aegis of the Letter of Intent.
  • Both sides agreed to strengthen the relationship through high level exchanges in the coming months.

Chief Information Commissioner

  • President Droupadi Murmu had appointed Information Commissioner Heeralal Samariya as the chief of the Central Information Commission (CIC).
  • The top post of the transparency panel was lying vacant after Y K Sinha’s term ended on October 3 2023.

IRDAI constituted taskforce to review existing Bancassurance framework

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) formed a taskforce that will review the existing bancassurance framework and improve the efficiency of the same amid complaints of mis-selling/forced selling of policies.
  • The committee will be headed by J Meena Kumari, Executive Director (Life) Irdai, who will serve as the Chairperson of the taskforce.
  • Other members will include senior officials from Irdai, representatives from the insurance companies and banks as well as R K Sharma, CGM (PP & GR), Irdai, serving as the Member-Convener.
  • As per the terms of reference for the taskforce, it has to suggest regulatory stipulations on the market conduct requirements of bancassurance partners amid rising complaints of mis-selling or forced selling of policies from customers.
  • Further, the committee will study the effectiveness of existing bancassurance models and suggest ways to improve its efficiency.
  • Also, it will examine the practices followed internationally and suggest suitable modifications that can be implemented on domestic regulations.
  • The taskforce is asked to submit these recommendations within a period of two months from the order.

  • Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) had appointed Rohit Rishi as its Executive Director by replacing A B Vijayakumar.

Global Responsible Tourism Award 2023

  • Kerala bagged the prestigious Global Responsible Tourism Award 2023, for its sustainable and women-inclusive initiatives successfully promoted by the state’s Responsible Tourism Mission.
  • The award was instituted by the Responsible Tourism Partnership and International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) in the ‘Best for Local Sourcing – Craft and Food’ category.
  • This is the second time Kerala RTM is getting the Responsible Tourism Global Award, after its Water STREET project implemented in Maravanthuruthu in Kottayam district bagging the honour in 2022.
  • The Global Responsible Tourism Awards, which cater to Africa, India and Latin America regions, were given in six categories including Best for Tackling Plastic Waste; Best for Meaningful Connections; Best for Local Sourcing – Craft and Food; Addressing Climate Change; Best for Diversity and Inclusion and Best for Nature-Positive Tourism.

2023 Asian Shooting Championships

  • The 2023 Asian Shooting Championships were the 15th Asian Shooting Championships and took place at Changwon Shooting Range, Changwon, South Korea.
  • 813 competitors from 30 countries took part in the competition.

24th Asian Archery Championships

  • Bangladesh will host the 24th Asian Archery Championships in 2025 after winning by 14-10 votes in the bid at the World Archery Asia Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • A total of 24-member countries of the Asian continent participated in the congress.
  • Bangladesh and China applied for bids as host countries for the 24th Asian Archery Championship.

Sunil Narine announced retirement

  • West Indies mystery spinner Sunil Narine announced his retirement from international cricket.
  • The Trinidadian made his international debut for Windies in 2011 during an ODI against India in Ahmedabad.
  • Since then, he has featured in 65 ODIs and bagged 92 wickets.
  • He has also represented the Caribbeans in six Tests and 51 T20Is, scalping 21 and 52 wickets, respectively.
  • Narine was also an integral part of IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders since 2011 and also became a sought-after player in various T20 leagues across the globe.

Hockey Women’s Asian Champions Trophy

  • In Hockey, the Indian women’s team dethroned Japan to crown themselves Asian Champions Trophy winners in Ranchi.
  • India won their maiden Asian Champions Trophy title in 2016 in Singapore, while Japan bagged the crown twice, in 2013 and 2021.
  • Asian Games champions China beat South Korea to secure the third place.

FIDE Grand Swiss and FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss 2023

  • The FIDE Grand Swiss and FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss 2023 was held at the Villa Marina, Douglas, Isle of Man.
  • Eleven rounds will be played under the Swiss System, with 164 players participating from all continents: 114 in the Grand Swiss and 50 players in the Women’s Grand Swiss.
  • The total prize fund is $600,000, with $460,000 for the Grand Swiss and $140,000 for the Women’s Grand Swiss.
  • This is the second time that a Women’s Grand Swiss event will be held.
  • The inaugural edition in Riga was won by GM Lei Tingjie.
  • Vidit Gujrathi beat Alexandr Predke of Serbia to record his seventh victory in the event and take the top spot in FIDE Grand Swiss.
  • R Vaishali beat Mongolia’s Batkhuyag Munguntuul to win FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss 2023.

  • World Tsunami Awareness Day is annually observed on November 05.
  • In December 2015, the UN General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day, calling on countries, international bodies and civil society to raise tsunami awareness and share innovative approaches to risk reduction.
  • Theme – “Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future”

International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict

  • International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict is annually observed on November 06.
  • The day aimed to raise awareness about the severe consequences of war and armed conflicts on the environment.
  • On 5 November 2001, the UN General Assembly declared 6 November of each year as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict (A/RES/56/4).
  • On 27 May 2016, the United Nations Environment Assembly adopted resolution UNEP/EA.2/Res.15, which recognized the role of healthy ecosystems and sustainably managed resources in reducing the risk of armed conflict, and reaffirmed its strong commitment to the full implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals listed in General Assembly resolution 70/1, entitled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

Defence Minister approved extended maternity benefits to women soldiers

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had approved a proposal for extension of the rules for maternity, child care and child adoption leaves for women soldiers, sailors and air warriors in the tri-services.

Indian Coast Guard ship Samar decommissioned

  • The Indian Coast Guard Ship, Samar, which had the distinction of being the first indigenously constructed vessel of the Coast Guard with a gross displacement of more than 1,800 gross tonnage, was decommissioned at the Coast Guard jetty at Mattancherry.
  • The ship was commissioned in February 1996 in Goa by then Prime Minister P.V. Narashimha Rao and was based in Mumbai under the operational command of the Commander Coast Guard Region (West).
  • It was rebased in Kochi in 2009.
  • Samar, which means ‘battle’, is a projection of the Indian Coast Guard’s will and commitment “to strive and protect” the maritime interests of the nation.
  • Built by Goa Shipyard Limited, the 102-metre-long ship’s construction was seen as a triumph for the Indian shipbuilding industry.
  • The vessel was propelled by 6,200 kW twin diesel engines and could attain a maximum speed of 21 knots (around 40 kmph).
  • During its lifespan, the ship traversed the sea for around 54,000 hours, covering more than 5,68,700 miles.

33rd edition of annual International Maritime Boundary Line meeting

  • The 33rd edition of annual International Maritime Boundary Line meeting between the representatives of Navies and Coast Guards of India and Sri Lanka onboard INS Sumitra at the Indo – Sri Lanka Maritime Boundary Line off Point Calimere at Palk Bay.
  • The interaction between the counterparts of both countries acts as a forum for the Navies and Coast Guards of the two countries to further enhance ties and synergy in operations.
  • The Sri Lankan delegation was headed by Commander of North Central Naval Area of Sri Lanka Navy, Rear Admiral BAKS Banagoda.
  • The Indian delegation was headed by Flag Officer commanding Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area, Rear Admiral Ravi Kumar Dhingra.

Indian Navy's latest warship 'Surat'

  • Indian Navy’s latest warship ‘Surat’ was unveiled by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in the presence of the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar.
  • This is the first warship to be named after a city of Gujarat and this is also the first time the unveiling of the crest of a warship is being undertaken in the very city after which it has been named.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had launched this indigenously constructed ship, which is a guided missile destroyer, in March last year at Mumbai.
  • The warship is presently under construction at Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai.
