‘Bharat’ Atta

  • The Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Textiles and Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal flagged off 100 mobile vans for sale of wheat flour (Atta) under ‘Bharat’ brand, from Kartavya Path, New Delhi.
  • The atta will be available at an MRP not exceeding ₹27.50/Kg.
  • ‘Bharat’ Atta will be available at all physical and mobile outlets of Kendriya Bhandar, NAFED and NCCF initially and will be expanded to other co-op/retail outlets.

LEAP AHEAD initiative

  • Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S Krishnan launched the LEAP AHEAD initiative, a joint collaboration of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) Delhi-NCR, at the LEAP AHEAD summit in the bid to support and accelerate the success of tech startups across India.
  • This initiative will be a game-changer for tech Startups that are in the scaling stage, growth stage, product diversification or planning expansion into new geographical locations.
  • They can benefit through funding support of up to ₹1 Crore and a comprehensive three-month mentorship program that combines virtual and in-person sessions for a well-rounded learning experience.

IIT Madras inaugurated first international campus in Zanzibar

  • IIT Madras (IIT-M) formally inaugurated its Zanzibar (Africa) campus.

World Travel Market (WTM) 2023, London

  • Ministry of Tourism, along with various stakeholders including tour operators and state tourism departments participated in World Travel Market (WTM)
  • The Ministry of Tourism has taken a space of 650 square meters for the Incredible India Pavilion at WTM 2023, London to showcase varied tourism products and series of transformative experiences for travellers to India under the theme ‘Incredible India! Visit India Year 2023’.
  • The formal inauguration of the Indian Pavilion was done by V. Vidyavathi, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and H.E. Vikram Doraiswami, High Commissioner of India to the UK.
  • In WTM 2023, 47 participants including tour operating companies / DMCs, State Tourism Departments from Delhi, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, Assam and Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) are participating in the Incredible India Pavilion whereas States Tourism Departments of Kerala, Karnataka, Ladakh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, have taken their own pavilions to showcase their products and services and connect with potential clients and partners.

Banking and Finance

Monetary Penalty by RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had imposed imposed a monetary penalty of ₹25,000/- on The Limbasi Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd., Limbasi, Kheda, Gujarat for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Loans and advances to directors, relatives and firms/concerns in which they are Interested’ read with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Loans and Advances to Directors etc. – Directors as surety/guarantors – Clarification’.
  • The central bank had also imposed a monetary penalty of ₹3.50 lakh on Malpur Nagarik Sahakari Bank Limited, Malpur, Aravalli, Gujarat for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Placement of Deposits with Other Banks by Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs)’.
  • The central bank had also imposed a monetary penalty of ₹4.00 lakh on Shree Lodra Nagarik Sahakari Bank Limited, Lodra, Gandhinagar, Gujarat for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Loans and advances to directors, relatives and firms/concerns in which they are interested’ and ‘Placement of Deposits with Other Banks by Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs)’.
  • The central bank had also imposed a monetary penalty of ₹50,000/- on The Jolarpet Co-operative Urban Bank Limited, Vellore, Tamil Nadu for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Board of Directors – UCBs’ read with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Loans and advances to directors, their relatives, and firms/concerns in which they are interested’.

Canara HSBC offers life insurance plan for Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank customers

  • Canara HSBC Life Insurance has launched a new guaranteed income plan Canara HSBC’s ‘Guaranteed Assured Income’ (GAIN) plan for the customers of Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB).
  • The plan not only offers an individual the opportunity to secure his/her life but also allows one to have regular income to take care of both long-term and short-term financial goals.
  • KVGB has 629 branches in nine districts of Karnataka.

IndusInd Bank Platinum RuPay Credit Card

  • IndusInd Bank had launched the ‘IndusInd Bank Platinum RuPay Credit Card,’ in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
  • With this credit card, customers will be able to engage in online and offline transactions through the RuPay network.
  • Customers can link their credit cards to UPI-enabled apps, facilitating effortless payments.
  • This integration will also empower users to earn rewards on their UPI transactions.

Canara Bank customers can make PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana contributions via NEFT from any bank

  • Canara Bank customers can now credit their Public Provident Fund and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana accounts maintained at Canara Bank use the National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) facility for sending the contribution amount from any other Bank.
  • Earlier, the customer could credit the PPF /SSY account maintained at our Bank through linked Saving Canara Bank account only.
  • PPF and SSY are small savings schemes launched by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, that provide a suitable method of building corpus over a long period of time while earning a good rate of return.
  • Both schemes’ returns fall under EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) category which means invested principal, interest and final amount are tax free in hands of investors.

IndiaFirst Life Insurance got GIFT City IFSC Registration

  • IndiaFirst Life Insurance Company Ltd (IndiaFirst Life), one of the fastest growing private life insurers of the country, became the first Indian life insurance company to get the Gujarat International Finance Tec (GIFT) City’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) Registration.
  • It obtained registration from the International Financial Services Centre Authority (IFSCA) in September 2023 following approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in August of the same year.

India’s SEA signed MoU with Brazil’s ABIOVE

  • Cooking oil industry body, the Solvent Extractor’s Association of India (SEA) have signed a memorandum of understanding with Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries (ABIOVE) for soyabean oil imports.
  • India is the largest Importer of edible oils in the world and imports nearly 15-16 million tonnes of Various Edible Oils including 5 to 4.0 million tonnes of soyabean oil mainly from Latin America.
  • Brazil is one of the major suppliers of soyabean oil to India.
  • In 2022, Brazil exported 4 million tonnes and in the current year till September, it has exported 1.2 million tonnes of soyabean oil to India.
  • Ajay Jhunjhunwala, president, SEA and Andre Meloni Nassar, president, ABIOVE, signed the MoU.
  • Both Associations agreed to cooperate with the supply, use, and trade of soybean, soymeal, soybean oil, as well as other oilseeds and their derivatives.

  • Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) in collaboration with Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Wadhwani AI) developed Krishi 24/7, the first-ever AI-powered solution for automated agricultural news monitoring and analysis, with support from org.
  • Krishi 24/7 will aid DA&FW to identify relevant news, generate timely alerts, and take prompt action to protect farmers’ interests and promote sustainable agricultural growth through improved decision-making.
  • The introduction of Krishi 24/7 addresses the need for an efficient mechanism to identify and manage agricultural news articles of interest to aid timely decision-making.
  • The tool scans news articles in multiple languages and translates them into English.
  • It extracts essential information from news articles, such as headline, crop name, event type, date, location, severity, summary, and source link, ensuring that the ministry receives timely updates on relevant events published on the web.

Deputy Managing Directors of NABARD

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has appointed Goverdhan S Rawat and Ajay Kumar Sood as its Deputy Managing Directors.
  • Goverdhan S Rawat was the Chief General Manager at the Pune, Maharashtra Regional Office.
  • Ajay Kumar Sood served as the Chief General Manager of NABARD at the Himachal Pradesh Regional Office in Shimla.

Centre extended term of office of two public sector bank chief

  • The Central Government has extended the term of office of AS Rajeev, MD and CEO of Bank of Maharashtra, beyond his current notified term, which expires on December 1, 2023, till the date of his superannuation — that is, May 31, 2024, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • Rajeev took charge as Bank of Maharashtra chief in December 2018.
  • The central government also has extended the term of office of Matam Venkata Rao, MD and CEO of the Central Bank of India, beyond his currently notified term, which expires on February 29, 2024, until the date of his superannuation, that is, July 31, 2025, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • He took charge as Central Bank of India chief in March 2021

 

Collegium recommended Chief Justices of 3 High Courts for appointment to SC

  • Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud recommended the Chief Justices of three High Courts for appointment to the apex court.
  • If appointed, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, Rajasthan Chief Justice Augustine George Masih and Gauhati High Court Chief justice Sandeep Mehta would fill up the three vacancies in the Supreme Court.
  • Currently, the court is functioning with 31 judges but the judicial strength is 34 judges.

Obituary

D.B. Chandre Gowda passed away

  • B. Chandre Gowda, one of the senior politicians of Karnataka, passed away at 87.
  • Chandre Gowda, an advocate by profession, got into electoral politics in 1971.
  • He has the distinction of being elected to all four Houses of the legislature in the country.
  • He was speaker of the Legislative Assembly as well (1983-85).
  • He was elected to Lok Sabha in 1971 from Chikkamagaluru as a Congress candidate.
  • During his second term, he resigned as a member so that Indira Gandhi could contest from Chikkamagaluru and re-enter parliament in 1978, in the post-Emergency scenario.
  • He was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Thirthahalli (1983, 1989) and Sringeri (1999).
  • He served as minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs in the S.M. Krishna-led Congress government.
  • He joined the BJP and got elected to parliament from the Bengaluru North constituency in 2009.
  • He also served as a member of Rajya Sabha (1986-89).

  • National Cancer Awareness Day is annually observed on November 07.
  • The day is observed to create public awareness about early detection, prevention, and treatment of cancer.
  • Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Harsh Vardhan established the day in 2014.

Infant Protection Day

  • Infant Protection Day is annually observed on November 07.
  • This day is celebrated with the aim of educating individuals on how to take care of infants in a better way.
  • In the early years of the 1990s, European countries initiated the observance of Infant Protection Day in view of raising awareness regarding infant mortality rates and educating people on what steps should be taken to combat such problems.

World Radiography Day

  • World Radiography Day is annually observed on November 08.
  • The day is celebrated to raise public awareness of radiographic imaging and therapy, which play a crucial role in the diagnosis and the treatment of patients and, most importantly, ensuring radiation is kept to the minimum required, hence improving the quality of patient care.
  • Since 2007 the day was celebrated by International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists.

World Urbanism Day

    • World Urbanism Day (World Town Planning Day) is annually observed on November 08.
    • The day is celebrated to recognise and promote the role of thorough planning in creating livable communities.

India successfully test-fired 'Pralay' missile off Odisha coast

  • India successfully test-fired its short-range ballistic missile ‘Pralay’ from the Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast
  • Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile’s launch at approximately 9:50 am achieved all of its mission objectives. Tracking instruments closely followed its path along the coastline.
  • ‘Pralay’ is a surface-to-surface missile with a range of 350-500 km and a payload capacity of 500-1,000 kg.
  • This missile is designed for deployment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and Line of Control (LoC).
