GI Tag

  • Goa cashew has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, ensuring recognition and safeguarding for local cashew farmers.
  • Rasabali famous sweet of Odisha’s Kendrapara district had received the GI tag.
  • Kalari, a popular Dogra cuisine, finds its origin in Udhampur district’s Ramnagar Made from milk had received the GI tag.
  • Tangsa textile, of the Tangsa tribe of Changlang district are famous for their exotic designs and colors and Khamti rice, a variety of sticky rice produced in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh had received the GI tag.

New drone rules 2023

  • The Ministry of Civil Aviation had notified the new Drone (Amendment) Rules 2023 for drone pilots, effective from the 27th September 2023.
  • The move aims to further liberalise, promote and facilitate drone operations across the country and make India a global drone hub by 2030.
  • According to drone regulator DGCA, no individual other than a holder of a valid remote pilot certificate enlisted on the digital sky platform will operate an unmanned aircraft system in India.
  • However, no Remote Pilot Certificate is required when the drone is of small to medium-size up to 2kg for non-commercial drone use.

Meenakashi Lekhi unveiled logo of upcoming India Art Architecture & Design Biennale 2023

  • Minister of State for Culture Meenakashi Lekhi unveiled the logo of the upcoming India Art Architecture & Design Biennale (IAADB) 2023 at National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi.
  • The IAADB 2023 will take place from 8th to 15th December at the Red Fort.
  • It will be an event of 7 Days based on 7 themes by 7 Curators.

India, Tanzania elevated ties to strategic partnership

  • India and Tanzania announced elevating their ties to strategic partnership and agreed on a five-year roadmap to significantly expand defence cooperation following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
  • The two sides inked six agreements providing for cooperation in the digital domain, culture, sports, maritime industries and white shipping information sharing.

Travel for LiFE initiative across Asia Pacific region

  • Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), has committed to work with India to expand Travel for LiFE initiative across Asia Pacific region.
  • India hosted 46th edition of Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Travel Mart 2023 from Oct 4 to Oct 6 at the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC), Pragati Maidan, in New Delhi
  • PATA Mart saw the participation of around 1000 delegates, is one of the major international trade exhibitions catering to the tourism sector and it serves as a platform for trade interactions between global buyers and sellers.   
  • Besides facilitating trade interactions between Buyer Sellers meet, the PTM 2023 also included thought provoking knowledge sessions at PATA Forum and youth engagement at PATA Youth Symposium.
  • Travel for LiFE initiative was showcased by the Ministry across all the events and it generated huge interest from international travel trade community
  • The Travel Mart was followed by the PATA Board meeting held where Ministry of Tourism shared Travel for LiFE initiative with the Board members.
  • PATA Board appreciated the initiative and Ministry of Tourism will work with PATA to expand the initiative across Asia Pacific region.

3 New Districts in Rajasthan

  • Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced the formation of three new districts in poll-bound Rajasthan, taking their total number to 53.
  • The Rajasthan government had earlier notified the formation of 17 new districts following Cabinet approval to take their total number to 50.
  • The 17 new districts formally came into being in August.
  • Now, with the announcement to create three districts — Malpura, Sujangarh and Kuchaman City — the number of districts in Rajasthan will further rise to 53.
  • The State of Rajasthan was formed on 30 March 1949.

ADB Approved $200 Million Loan to Strengthen Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management in Assam

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $200 million loan to strengthen flood and riverbank erosion risk management along the 650 kilometers (km) long main stem of the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India.
  • The project builds on the success and lessons from the ADB-financed Assam Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Investment Program (2010–2020) and similar investments in Bangladesh and will continue to tackle recurrent flooding and continual riverbank erosion of the Brahmaputra River.
  • The project will apply a holistic, integrated, and risk-informed approach to scale up investment in flood and riverbank erosion risk management and its long-term planning, while intensifying support for climate and disaster resilience and food security.
  • By optimizing co-benefits and empowering women through disaster-resilient economic activities, the project will benefit about 1 million people and increase crop production over 50,000 hectares.

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had cancelled the licence of Nagar Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd., Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.
  • Consequently, the bank ceases to carry on banking business, with effect from the close of business on October 04, 2023.

India signed MoU with Saudi Arabia

  • India and Saudi Arabia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Riyadh in the fields of Electrical Interconnections, Green / Clean Hydrogen and Supply Chains.
  • The MoU was signed between the visiting Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R.K. Singh and the Minister of Energy, Government of Saudi Arabia, Mr. Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud on the sidelines of the MENA Climate Week in Riyadh.
  • This MoU aims to establish a general framework for cooperation between the two countries in the field of electrical interconnection; exchange of electricity during peak times and emergencies; co-development of projects; co-production of green / clean hydrogen and renewable energy; and also establishing secure, reliable and resilient supply chains of materials used in green / clean hydrogen and the renewable energy sector.
  • It was also decided between the two energy ministers that B2B Business Summits and regular B2B interactions between the two countries will be conducted to establish complete supply and value chains in the above-mentioned areas of energy sector cooperation.

India signed MoU with Dominican Republic

  • Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar met his Dominican Republic counterpart Raquel Peña Rodríguez and discussed enhancing cooperation in sectors such as trade, pharmaceuticals and agriculture and two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed.
  • The first MoU was signed between India’s CSIR-NIO (National Institute of Oceanography) and the Dominican Republic’s National Institute of Maritime Affairs for scientific cooperation in ocean sciences.
  • The second MoU was signed between the Union Health Ministry’s Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation and the Drug Regulatory Authority of Dominican Republic on medical product regulation.

WHO signed MoU with WADA

  • The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and WHO have signed a four-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) to allow experts from both international organizations to collaborate and share information on issues where anti-doping and public health intersect.
  • The MOU was signed in Geneva, Switzerland, by WADA President, Witold Bańka, and WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
  • The agreement will run until 1 October 2027 and provides a framework of cooperation between WHO and WADA to further their goals, specifically with regards to health promotion, the prevention of substance abuse and emerging drugs, and the promotion of clean sport.

MCX got Sebi approval to launch new commodity derivatives platform

  • The Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) has received approval from the markets regulator to initiate its new commodity derivatives platform (CDP), which was suspended on September 28.
  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) issued this directive as Chennai Financial Markets and Accountability (CFMA) had submitted writ petitions concerning the CDP, and the issue is currently before the Madras High Court.
  • MCX, the largest commodity derivatives exchange, mentioned that they presented their responses to the CFMA complaints to Sebi and, following due process, the regulator’s Technical Advisory Committee approved it.

The Prize in Economic Sciences 2023

  • The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2023 was given to Claudia Goldin of USA for her work identifying drivers of gender differences in the labour market.
  • It was first awarded in 1969 to Dutch economist Jan Tinbergen and Norwegian economist Ragnar Frisch “for having developed and applied dynamic models for the analysis of economic processes”.
  • Elinor Ostrom became the first female economic sciences laureate when awarded the prize in 2009.
  • The youngest economic sciences laureate is Esther Duflo, who was 46 years old when she was awarded in 2019.
  • The oldest economic sciences laureate to date is Leonid Hurwicz, who was 90 years old when he was awarded in 2007.
  • In 1978, Herbert A. Simon, whose PhD was in political science, became the first non-economist to win the prize, for his work in the fields of economics and organizational decision making.
  • 93 individuals have been awarded 1969-2023.
  • Only three Woman had won the award (Elinor Ostrom-2009, Esther Duflo-2019 and Claudia Goldin-2023)
  • 26 prizes in economic sciences have been given to one laureate only.

BWF World Junior Championships 2023

  • Indian badminton player Ayush Shetty won a bronze medal at the BWF World Junior Championships 2023 in Spokane, USA.
  • This was India’s 11th medal at the junior badminton world championships.
  • Saina Nehwal clinched a gold medal in 2008 and it remains India’s best result at the event.
  • She also bagged a silver in 2006.
  • India’s S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian too won a silver in 2022.
  • Overall, Indian badminton players have won one gold, four silvers and six bronze medals at the BWF World Junior Championships since it began in 1992.

Indian Air Force unveiled its new ensign on 91st anniversary

  • The Indian Air Force celebrated its 91st anniversary in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
  • As part of the celebrations, IAF organized the ceremonial parade at Air Force Station Bamrauli at Prayagraj.
  • The theme for this year’s Air Force Day is ‘IAF-Airpower Beyond Boundaries’.
  • The theme aptly reflects the inherent global reach of air power.
  • In this year, the Indian Air Force carried out eight exercises across the globe with friendly foreign countries and performed exceptionally well.
  • For the first time, our indigenously built light combat aircraft also participated in an overseas exercise.
  • This is the first AF Day parade which was commanded by a woman officer, Group Captain Shaliza Dhami.
  • She is also the first woman officer of the IAF to command a combat unit.
  • For the first time, the parade had an all-women contingent composed of the newly inducted Agniveer Vayu women, who marched shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts.
  • The parade also included a flight of Garud Commandos of the IAF for the first time.
  • The Garuds have recently completed 20 years of service (September 2004) to the nation.
