International Workshop on Food Loss and Waste Prevention in South Asian Region
- The Indian Council of Agriculture Research in collaboration with the Thünen Institute is organizing International Workshop on Food Loss and Waste Prevention in South Asian Region at National Agricultural Science Centre Complex, New Delhi.
- The workshop will be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Agriculture& Farmers’ Welfare, Sushri Shobha Karandlaje in the presence of Secretary,DARE – DG (ICAR),Dr. Himanshu Pathak and Research Director, Thünen Institute, Germany, Stefan Lange.
- The workshop aims to address issues like Assessment and Impact of Postharvest Losses and Food Waste; Prevention of Postharvest Losses in the Supply Chain; Prevention of Food Waste in Households and Community Activities and Role of Food Bank Networks and Circular Economy.
- Participants in the workshop would be different types of stakeholders from the South Asian Countries viz. India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, etc.
- The participants would discuss impact of Food Loss & Waste on the economy, environment, and society in the South Asian Region and will share knowledge and expertise on methodologies to measure and assess food loss and waste.
- Further the knowledge on technologies, approaches, and strategies to prevent food loss and waste would also be shared along with success stories and case studies from different countries in the region.
- The programme will include presentations from various stakeholders coming from South Asian Countries as well from Germany, USA and UN organizations.
- Besides there would be panel discussions on various issues and available solutions followed by visits to some organizations which have successfully addressed the issue of post-harvest losses and food wastage.
- Spectrum of delegates include stakeholders from industry, ICAR institutes, Agricultural Universities, Government agencies such as Food Corporation of India, Central Warehousing Corporation, IGNOU, IIT etc.

G7 Trade Ministers’ Meeting
- Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Piyush Goyal, participated in the G7 Trade Ministers Meeting in Osaka, Japan.
- Shri Goyal made an important intervention on the topic of Enhancing Supply Chain Resilience and gave several suggestions on the issue.
- He mentioned that the Covid 19 pandemic and the geo-political events highlighted the vulnerabilities of the existing supply chains leading to increase in commodity prices and global inflation.
- G7 is an intergovernmental forum comprising seven important countries of the world.
- G7 accounts for over half of global network wealth, 30-43% of global GDP and 10% of world’s population.
- India is amongst the select countries that have been invited by G7 in this meeting of trade ministers in Osaka.
- G7 countries includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the European Union.

First State to have hallmarking centres in all districts
- Kerala became the first state in India to have hallmarking centres in all 14 districts after the inauguration of a hallmarking centre in Idukki.
- The opening of hallmarking centres across the districts will make Kerala a hub of gold business and further strengthen its claim to being the most reliable market in the country to buy gold ornaments.

Narendra Modi launched development projects in Mehsana, Gujarat
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stone for various developmental projects worth over 5,900 crore rupees at Dabhoda in Mehsana district of Gujarat.
- He also launched the New Bhandu-New Sanand(N) section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor WDFC, doubling project of Viramgam – Samakhiali rail line; Katosan Road- Bechraji Rail Project.
- And also inaugurated projects for the recharge of various village lakes of Mehsana and Gandhinagar districts.
- Apart from this, Valasana barrage on Sabarmati river in Mehsana District; two schemes for providing drinking water, Banaskantha; and the Dharoi dam based Palanpur lifeline project was also launched.
- He also laid the foundation Stone of irrigation project in Santrampur taluka of Mahisagar District; widening and strengthening of Naroda – Dehgam – Harsol – Dhansura Road, in Sabarkantha; projects for sewage treatment plants in Palanpur, Siddhpur, Bayad and Vadnagar in North Gujarat.

Banking and Finance
Fincare SFB to be amalgamated into AU Small Finance Bank
- Fincare Small Finance Bank (Fincare SFB) is poised to amalgamate into AU Small Finance Bank (AU SFB), with the merger slated to take effect from February 1, 2024, subject to all requisite approvals.
- As per the terms of the merger, shareholders of Fincare SFB will receive 579 shares in AU SFB for every 2,000 shares they hold in Fincare SFB.
- Following the transaction, it is expected that existing shareholders of Fincare SFB will maintain approximately 9.9% ownership in AU SFB.
- The completion of this transaction is subject to several critical conditions, including approval from the shareholders of both Fincare SFB and AU SFB, regulatory endorsements from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Competition Commission of India (CCI), and a capital infusion of Rs. 700 crores by the promoters of Fincare SFB.
- AU SFB has confirmed that all employees of Fincare SFB will be included in the AU SFB family after the merger.
- As part of this strategic merger, the Managing Director & CEO of Fincare SFB will become the Deputy CEO of AU SFB after the merger.

RBI’s gold holdings touched 800 tonnes
- The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) gold holdings, part of its foreign exchange reserves, has reached near 800 tonnes level.
- The landmark number comes at a time when the first tranche of sovereign gold bonds (SGBs) issued in 2015 are going to come up for redemption in November.
- The RBI started buying gold from the calendar year 2018.
- Before that, it had purchased 200 tonnes in 2009 during the global financial crisis.
- Since 2018, it has added nearly 242 tonnes of gold.
- This year till August, the RBI has added 12.2 tonnes of gold.
- SGBs were introduced by the government in 2015 to cater to individuals who were buying physical gold for investment purposes.
- Besides offering 2.5% interest on the initial investment, which is credited twice a year, the rising price of the yellow metal is another important reason for investing in the product.
- Since the launch, SGBs have collected as much as 120 tonnes.

Centralised wildlife crime management system
- The Karnataka Forest Department, along with the Wildlife Trust of India, has launched the Hostile Activity Watch Kernel (HAWK) system, a specialised software platform to monitor all aspects of forest and wildlife crime.
- Supported by digital services company NTT Data, the system would help the department monitor activities such as the death of wildlife, suspected criminal activities, and the movement of suspicious vehicles.
- Information regarding these and other incidents of interest from the field would be fed into a centralised system so that effective and pre-emptive responses, including counteraction, could be initiated.
- The HAWK system will help the department to manage and monitor data regarding forest and wildlife crime across the State in real-time.
- This will increase the overall efficiency of the department in crime management.

UN Launched Advisory Body to Boost International Cooperation on AI Governance
- United Nations (UN) launched a 39-member advisory body to support greater international cooperation in the governance of AI, with the group’s first meeting on October 27.
- The advisory body consists of experts from the government, private sector, research community, and academia, to help support collaboration across different stakeholder groups.
- Its members include Sony Chief Technology Officer Hiroaki Kitano, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, and Microsoft Chief Responsible AI Officer Natasha Crampton.
- Key members of this advisory body include Amandeep Singh Gill, the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology; Sharad Sharma, co-founder of iSPIRT Foundation; and Nazneen Rajani, Lead Researcher at Hugging Face, India.

King of Malaysia
- Malaysia’s royal families elected the powerful and outspoken Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar from the southern state of Johor to be the country’s next king will take over from current King Al-Sultan Abdullah on January 31, 2024.
- The king plays a largely ceremonial role in Malaysia, but the monarchy has become more influential in recent years due to prolonged political instability that has prompted the incumbent king to wield rarely used discretionary powers.
- Malaysia has a unique system in which the heads of its nine royal families take turns to be monarch for a five-year term.

Delhi Metro, Lucknow Metro win award at UMI Conference 2023
- The Delhi Metro and the Lucknow Metro have shared an excellence award in public transport on 16th Urban Mobility India Conference 2023.
- The award is in the category of ‘Metro Rail with Best Passenger Services and Satisfaction.
- The DMRC won the award along with the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, which currently operates the Lucknow Metro and Kanpur Metro.
- The UPMRC received the ‘Award of Excellence in Public Transport’ in the ‘Metro Rail with Best Passenger Services and Satisfaction’ category for Lucknow Metro.
- Lucknow Metro was awarded for its unique and passenger-centric measures and different policies.

- In shooting, Manu Bhaker secured the 11th Paris Olympics quota place for India after finishing fifth in women’s 25-metre sports pistol at the Asian Shooting Championships in Changwon, Korea.

World Stroke Day
- World Stroke Day is annually observed on October 29.
- The day underscore the serious nature and high rates of stroke, raise awareness of the prevention and treatment of the condition, and ensure better care and support for survivors.
- October 29 is designated as World Stroke Day, an event that was started in 2004 during the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada.
- Theme – ‘Together we are #Greater Than Stroke.’
International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
- International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is annually observed on October 29.
- In 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (resolution 32/40 B).
- On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)).
International Day of Care and Support
- International Day of Care and Support is annually observed on October 29.
- The day recognises the unequal burden of unpaid care and household work on women and girls, as well as emphasising the importance of addressing these systemic impediments to women’s empowerment.

KAZIND-2023
- 7th edition of Joint Military ‘Exercise KAZIND-2023’ will be conducted at Otar, Kazakhstan.
- The Joint Exercise between India and Kazakhstan was instituted as ‘Exercise PRABAL DOSTYK’ in the year 2016.
- After the second edition, the Exercise was upgraded to a company-level exercise and renamed as ‘Exercise KAZIND’.
- The Exercise has been further upgraded as a Bi-service Exercise this year by including the Air Force component.
- Indian Army contingent comprises 90 personnel led by a Battalion from the DOGRA Regiment.
- The Kazakhstan contingent is mainly represented by personnel from Regional Command South of Kazakh Ground Forces.
- 30 personnel of Air Force from both sides will also participate in the current edition of the Exercise alongside the Army contingents.

Goa Maritime Conclave 2023
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the 4th edition of the Goa Maritime Conclave (GMC) 2023.
- The four-day conclave held by the Indian Navy will conclude on October 31.
- The theme of the conclave this year is ”Maritime Security in the Indian Ocean Region: Converting Common Maritime Priorities into Collaborative Mitigating Frameworks”.
- At the GMC-23, Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy, will host chiefs of navies/ heads of maritime forces/ senior representatives from 12 Indian Ocean littorals, including Bangladesh, Comoros, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
