How to Boost Your English Vocabulary for Competitive Exams?

Almost all competitive exams will have a section that tests the aspirants’ skills and knowledge of the English language. So, a candidate needs to improve their language proficiency in terms of vocabulary as it definitely impacts their written and verbal English skill.

Want to pass a competitive exam? If yes, then you must be proficient in English. Because you will be evaluated independently for each section in such exams, make sure you give your English preparation the same amount of importance as your preparation for the aptitude and reasoning tests.

However, what matters more in English is vocabulary. Here in this article, you will learn what role vocabulary for competitive exams plays and how you can improve it.

A well-developed vocabulary helps to

  • Present their ideas in a better manner in both verbal and written language
  • Makes the conversation easy
  • Helps to present ideas better in Group discussions
  • Boosts confidence

Why is English Vocabulary Important?

You may have heard about the five pillars of reading comprehension. Vocabulary is one of them, and a good grasp of words and their usage ensures speedy comprehension and passage-solving. As a result, it becomes necessary to have a strong command of English vocabulary and to get good grades on RC portions. Moreover, in almost every competitive exam, you will find several questions testing your vocabulary in the form of synonyms, antonyms, and one-word substitutions.

Furthermore, in examinations like IBPS, SSC and UPSC, you need to answer fill-in-the-blanks, error finding, para jumble, and idioms and phrases. This further accentuates the importance of vocabulary for competitive exams.

Besides being important for exams, having a strong stock of words is one of the valuable assets in one’s professional life. If you were to seek professional help, they would advise you to increase your vocabulary and get more familiar with a variety of key English terminology.

How to Improve English Vocabulary for Competitive Exams?

There is no strict rule to improve your English vocabulary. However, you can keep a few pointers in mind to make it a more streamlined process –

Memorising never helps; reading does

You need more than simply cramming common vocabulary words from a source to expand your vocabulary. You will eventually forget the words even if you retain them for a day or two. Sometimes you may recall the word but not necessarily the meaning. There is a better approach. That is reading! Read whatever you can find. It may be a book, an article, or a newspaper article.

Blind online searches are no good; learn the context

However, you may have seen people trying to familiarise themselves with new words by checking them up when encountering a new word. But that is wrong! Never do this. Even after 30 minutes, you might not recall that word. As mentioned earlier, you may remember its meaning but not the word. The better way is not to just Google a word’s definition but to search for the term in other contexts, such as how it is used as a noun and an adjective, and in various sentences. That is how the word first comes to us. The term must be yours!

Hold on; there’s more. You must note down the word somewhere and periodically refer back to it. In case you understand, depending on your comfort level, you might keep a diary or use your phones as notes.

Playing word games always help

One of the easiest ways to better your vocabulary for competitive exams is by playing word games. Numerous such games available online and offline can help you learn more words in a fun and engaging manner.

Tune into the 'word of the day' feed

There are online platforms and social media accounts that run such feeds. Here, you get to learn a new word every day, along with its meaning, context and examples of its usage.

These are some common ways to improve your vocabulary, but there are other methods as well. So, find a way that suits your system and stick to it. Also, if possible, note down the most important vocabulary and start with them and then slowly progress to others for a more all-around preparation.

Hopefully, now you have an outline for improving your vocabulary for competitive exams. You can use the pointers mentioned here to your advantage and ace the English section in your exam to ensure that you stay ahead of the curve.
