The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recently announced a noteworthy change in the promotion of any State Civil Services Officers (Group 1). Earlier, any individual who joined as any Group 1 officer was eligible to get promoted to the rank of IPS or IAS without any examination. Now, as per the latest announcement, Group 1 grade government officers or aspirants willing to get a promotion from TNPSC Group 1 DSP to IPS have to appear for a competitive examination, which is somewhat similar to the current civil service examination.

TNPSC Group 1 DSP to IPS Eligibility Criteria
Mentioned below are the two basic eligibility criteria for getting promoted from any TNPSC Group 1 posts to IPS or IAS:
- Years of Experience
Interested candidates must hold a minimum of 8 years of experience in Group 1 Grade as DSP, Deputy Collector, and any similar rank.
- Age Limit
The candidate must not be more than 54 years old.
Exam Pattern for Promotion to IPS or IAS
In general, there are 3 basic steps to qualify as an IPS or IAS officer successfully. However, in the case of promotions from TNPSC group 1 posts to IAS, candidates need to successfully clear 4 unique steps in place of the original 3 steps.
Step 1
It is the most crucial, consisting of a written examination for 400 marks. As an IPS/ IAS aspirant, candidates must pass this examination to qualify further.
Step 2
In this step, there is a working experience evaluation for 200 marks. This step is specially curated for aspirants seeking a transfer from TNPSC Group 1 DSP to IPS.
Step 3
This step encompasses the service record valuation for 250 marks. This is the final step that every candidate needs to clear successfully to qualify for the interview round.
Step 4
It is the final step in the selection process; here, candidates must pass the interview round of 150 marks successfully.
To add up all the scores distinctively, IPS or IAS aspirants must pass a 1000 marks score evaluation.
