Basic English Grammar: Noun 1
Parts of speech
1. A category to which a word is assigned in accordance with its syntactic functions.
2. In English the main parts of speech are noun, pronoun, adjective, determiner, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.
Noun
A word (other than a pronoun) used to identify any class of people, places, or things (common noun), or to name a particular one of these (proper noun).
Note: In Bank and SSC Exams, Noun is very useful in attending spotting errors, cloze test, and Phrasal improvement Questions.
Some Important types of Noun
Proper Noun:
A name used for an individual person, place, or organization.
EX: Chennai, Ram.
Common Noun:
A noun denoting a class of objects or a concept as opposed to a particular individual.
EX: candle, chair.
Abstract Noun:
A noun denoting an idea, quality, or state rather than a concrete object.
EX: Truth, danger, happiness.
Countable Noun:
Anything that can be counted, whether singular or plural.
Ex: a dog, a house, a friend, a few books, lots of oranges.
Uncountable Noun:
Uncountable nouns are also called Mass nouns, and they need to have “counters” to quantify them.
EX: kilo, cup, meter, rice, flour, cloth.
Collective Noun:
Collective noun is the name we give to a group of nouns to refer to them as one entity.
Ex: A class of students, an army of soldiers.
