NABARD sanctions study to evaluate impact of GI certified products

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a study on the impact evaluation of Geographical Indication (GI) products to Symbiosis School of Economics.
  • This particular study will enable NABARD to analyse the benefits accrued to artisans/producers because of the GI tags over the years.
  • As of today, 144 products supported by NABARD, are GI tagged.
  • The first product that received a GI tag with support from NABARD, was Pochampally Ikat from the State of Telangana (erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh).
  • NABARD, not only supports GI registration of a product, but also focuses on post-registration activities, such as registration of authorised users, renewal of existing registration, marketing support, consumer awareness and training programmes, among others.

Dubai Plans World’s Largest Airport Terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport

  • Dubai has revealed plans for the construction of the world’s largest airport terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport.
  • The ambitious project, approved by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, is set to revolutionize the aviation industry and solidify Dubai’s position as a global transportation hub.
  • Upon completion, Al Maktoum International Airport will have a staggering capacity for 260 million passengers annually, dwarfing any other airport in the world.
  • This colossal terminal is poised to be five times the size of the current Dubai International Airport, signaling a significant leap forward in infrastructure and operational capabilities.

Kerala agricultural University varsity patents coconut de-husking machine

  • Kerala Agricultural University has developed a power-operated coconut dehusking machine for large-scale use.
  • The university has received a patent for the device, which was designed and developed by Jayan PR (Dean of Faculty, Agriculture Engineering), CP Muhammed (retired dean), Anu Sarath Chandran (MTech student), and Kotiary Bineesh Lal (research assistant).
  • Moreover, it helps tide over the acute shortage of workers in the sector.
  • The husk removed by the machine can be used directly by the coir industry, which is an added advantage.
  • The machine can handle green and dry coconuts of various sizes and boasts minimal breakage rate, he said.
  • At the trial run, the machine dehusked 500 coconuts per hour without any breakage.

Cred launches offline QR code-based ‘scan and pay’ payments

  • Fintech unicorn Cred has launched offline retail payments at large format stores.
  • It has completed the pilots and will roll out the solution at select merchant outlets throughout this year.
  • These include supermarkets, quick-service restaurants, salons, fashion and other lifestyle retailers.
  • The product is mostly targeted at merchants who have a large ticket size average transaction and their customers typically pay with credit cards.

HSBC: India needs ‘hard reforms’ to reach 7.5% growth

  • According to HSBC Holdings Plc, India will need to carry out difficult reforms such as overhauling land and labour laws in order to grow the economy more than 5 per cent over the next decade.

IEA: India may become 3rd largest market for utility-scale batteries by 2030

  • According to a report by IEA (International Energy Agency), India is likely to become the world’s third-largest market for utility-scale batteries by 2030 with capacity additions projected to accelerate considerably over the next seven years to reach nearly 9 GW, supported by cost reductions.
  • The report underscores that if India meets all its government-set targets on schedule, solar PV and battery storage will become the backbone of the country’s power grid by
  • Batteries will charge during peak solar hours and discharge during evening peak hours.
  • China became the leading market for battery storage two years ago, with its share of annual global additions increasing from approximately 20 per cent in 2019 to 55 per cent in 2023.
  • The US is the second-largest battery storage market, with additions doubling year-on-year to over 8 GW in 2023.
  • Installed battery storage capacity in the European Union grew by 70 per cent in 2023, with annual additions reaching nearly 6 GW.
  • The report notes that India, with its energy storage targets and financial support, has the potential to become another major market for battery storage.

Integrated Pensioners’ Portal Of Bank Of India was launched

  • “Pension Portals of all Pension Disbursing Banks to be integrated in the Integrated Pensioners’ Portal of Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare to ensure Ease of Living of Pensioners” says V Shrinivas, Secretary (P&PW) while addressing the launch ceremony of the Integrated Pensioners’ Portal of Bank of India.
  • ‘Department of Pension & Pensioners Welfare’ had taken a number of initiatives to enhance the welfare of pensioners.
  • Digital empowerment of pensioners is one such initiative and is being implemented through various means such as Digital Life Certificates and Bhavishya Portal.
  • The Bhavishya platform has ensured End-to-End digitization of the Pension processing and payment which commences from the retiree filing his/her papers online till issue of the PPO in electronic format and going into the Digilocker.
  • The ‘Bhavishya’ platform, an integrated online pension processing system was made mandatory for all central government departments w.e.f. 01.01.2017.
  • This system is at present being successfully implemented in 98 Ministries/ Departments including 870 Attached Offices and 8,174 DDOs on board.
  • Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare was awarded the 3rd Rank for BHAVISHYA (an online tracking system for pension sanction and payment developed by DOPPW) as per the NeSDA Assessment 2021 among all the Central Government e-Governance Service Delivery Portals.
  • The task of Integration of Pension Portal of SBI, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and Canara Bank with Bhavishya portal has been completed.

NHPC Limited to collaborate with Norwegian company for implementation of Floating Solar Energy Technology in India

  • NHPC Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with M/s Ocean Sun, a Norwegian company operating as a technology provider to the floating solar industry.
  • As per the MoU, NHPC and Ocean Sun will explore key areas of cooperation for demonstration of Ocean Sun’s floating solar energy technology based on photovoltaic panels.
  • The panels would be mounted on hydro-elastic membranes, at relevant sites to be identified by NHPC.
  • The agreement is in continuation of efforts towards sustainable development and addition of renewable energy capacity by NHPC, which is engaged not only in hydro power development but also in various renewable energy projects such as solar, wind and green hydrogen projects.
  • The MoU was signed in hybrid mode by Executive Director (Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen), NHPC, R. Shrivastava and CEO, Ocean Sun, Kristian Tørvold.

Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi takes charge as 26th Navy chief

  • Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi assumed command of the Indian Navy as the 26th Chief of the Naval Staff.
  • He succeeds Admiral R. Hari Kumar who retires upon superannuation after over 40 years of service.
  • He is an alumnus of Sainik School Rewa and National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and was commissioned into the executive branch of the Navy on July 1, 1985.

IndiGo appoints Isidro Porqueras as transformation chief

  • IndiGo has named Isidro Porqueras, former COO of European airline Volotea, as a chief of transformation.

DUK Dean Alex James chosen for IEEE award

  • Digital University Kerala Dean (Academics) Alex James has been selected for the prestigious IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Guillemin-Cauer Best Paper Award for 2024.
  • The honour is in recognition of his paper ‘Analog Neural Computing with Super-Resolution Memristor Crossbars’ that he co-authored with Professor Leon O. Chua of the University of California, Berkeley.
  • The paper was published in Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions on Circuits and Systems, a peer-reviewed journal.

India won 8 medals at Archery World Cup Stage-1

  • India finished the Archery World Cup Stage 1 held in Shanghai, China with eight medals – five gold, two silvers and one bronze.
  • This is India’s highest medal tally at any single edition of an archery World Cup.
  • India sent a 16-member archery team for the Shanghai event.

6th Ammunition cum torpedo cum missile barge, LSAM 20 (yard 130) was launched

  • The launch of ‘Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile Barge, LSAM 20 (Yard 130)’, 6th Barge of 11 x ACTCM Barge Project, built by MSME Shipyard, M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, Thane for Indian Navy, was undertaken on 29 Apr 24 at M/s Suryadipta Project Pvt. Ltd. (launch site of M/s SPPL).
  • The contract for building 11 x ACTCM Barge was signed between MoD and M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, Thane.
  • The availability of these Barges would provide impetus to operational commitments of IN by facilitating Transportation, Embarkation and Disembarkation of articles/ ammunition to IN Ships both alongside jetties and at outer harbours.
  • These Barges are indigenously designed and built under relevant Naval Rules and Regulation of Indian Register of Shipping.
  • The model testing of the Barge during the design stage was undertaken at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam.
  • These Barges are proud flag bearers of Make in India initiative of Government of India (GoI).
