Basic English Grammar: Adverb
What is an Adverb?
An adverb is a word that is used to change or qualify the meaning of an adjective, a verb, a clause, another adverb, or any other type of word or phrase and sometimes a whole sentence.
Examples of Adverbs:
As you read each of the following sentences, you may note that the adverbs have been italicized for easy identification. Consider how replacing the given adverbs with the other ones would change the meaning of each sentence.
- He walks slowly.
- That was a very good movie.
- He walks very slowly
In the First sentence above, slowly modifies the verb walks.
In the Second sentence, very modifies the adjective good.
In the Third sentence, very modifies the adverb slowly.
An adverb can modify a whole sentence. In this case, it stands at the beginning of a sentence:
- Luckily he got through the examination.
- Unfortunately he could not escape the attack.
- Clearly the answer is wrong.
