GI Tags 2023
- Kerala has topped the list of states in the country with most number of products securing the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in financial year 2022-23.
- Attappady Aattukombu Avara, Attappady Thuvara, Onattukara Ellu, Kanthaloor Vattavada Veluthuli, Kodungallur Pottuvellari were picked for the GI recognition tag.
- Besides the 6 products from Kerala, Mithila Makhana (aquatic fox nut) from Bihar was selected for GI recognition followed by Alibag white onion from Maharashtra.
- Tandur Redgram from Telangana the local variety of pea, Ladakh Raktsey Karpo Apricot from Ladakh and Gamosa handicrafts from Assam were also chosen for the honours.
- Mircha’ rice of Bihar’s West Champaran also awarded the GI tag.
- Banarasi Langda Mango, Ramnagar Bhanta (Brinjal), and Adamchini Rice and Banarasi Paan of Uttar Pradesh have also got Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
- A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g., a town, region, or country).
- India, as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 has come into force with effect from 15 September 2003.
'Vande Bharat' train model showcased at rail museum in Pune
- A special miniature scale model of ‘Vande Bharat’, the indigenously designed semi-high speed express train, has been put on display at the Pune-based Joshi’s Museum of Miniature Railways to provide information about the train to rail enthusiasts.
- The ‘Vande Bharat’ model, designed on ‘1:100’ scale, was unveiled by Pune Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil during a special visit to the museum as the facility is celebrating 25 years of its existence.
In Parliament
- The Railway Ministry informed that there are 17 Railway Zones functional in the country including Kolkata Metro Railway.
- India has signed 13 Free Trade Agreements, FTAs with its trading partners.
- The country is currently negotiating FTAs with the United Kingdom, the European Union and Canada.
- As per the sixth Economic Census, a total of five crore 84 lakh 95 thousand 359 economic establishments were listed in the country.
- The economic census is the complete count of all non-farm economic establishments located within the geographical boundary of the country.

India-Romania pact on defence to help promote cooperation, says senion Romanian official Simona Cojocaru
- The defence cooperation agreement signed between India and Romania will enhance collaboration through the exchange of expertise and knowledge on subjects of mutual interest including co-development and co-production of military hardware, said State Secretary and Chief of the Department for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations of Romania, Simona Cojocaru.

India & Bhutan plan to set up first Integrated Check Post along border near Jaigaon
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck held a bilateral meeting in New Delhi.
- Both the countries reviewed their bilateral ties focusing on economic and development partnership, trade facilitation measures and cooperation in trade, connectivity, investment, energy and new sectors including space and startups.
- India and Bhutan will also expedite the proposed Kokrajhar-Gelephu rail link project through Government of India support in consultation with the Bhutanese side it will be historic because it will be the first-ever rail link between India and Bhutan.
- Both countries are examining and considering setting up the first Integrated Check Post along the India-Bhutan border, which would be near Jaigaon.

J&K announces Rs 560 crores project to create a robust market ecosystem
- Jammu and Kashmir administration has announced a Rs 560-crore project under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) to strengthen the existing market infrastructure and create a robust market ecosystem to boost the region’s economy and benefit farmers.
- The project aims to improve the terms of trade (ToT) in favour of farmers, improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the market ecosystem, and minimize value loss while maximizing societal welfare.

Schemes
Jal Jeevan Mission achieves 60% of its target
- The Jal Jeevan Mission has reached 60% of its countrywide target, adding 23.4 million households in the fiscal year ended 2022-23.
- Of India’s total of 190.4 million rural households, 116 million now have a functioning water tap.
- At the start of the mission, a baseline survey showed that less than 17% or 32.3 million households had a tap connection.
- The country crossed another milestone in the journey towards ‘Har Ghar Jal’ with over 11.66 crore (60%) rural households provided with tap water supply in their homes.
- As on date, Gujarat, Telangana, Goa, Haryana, Punjab and the Union territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Daman Diu & Dadra Nagar Haveli and Puducherry have achieved 100% coverage.
- Under the mission, 2,078 water testing labs have been installed, of which 1,122 are accredited with National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, according to data from the Jal Shakti ministry.
- Jal Jeevan Mission was launched on 15/08/2019.
Centre has releases Rs 22.74 crores to Arunachal Pradesh under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana
- The Centre has released an amount of Rs 22.74 crores to Arunachal Pradesh under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) as grant-in-aid.
- The incentive has been given for best performance of the State in implementation of PMGSY during 2022-23 under set parameters.
- The funds released will be used for periodic maintenance of rural roads already constructed under PMGSY as per directives of Government of India.
PMJAY on Paytm
- Paytm allows users to access certain government-provided services, including blood bank services, PMJAY health cover, and DigiLocker, along with the ability to pay utility bills and process fund transfers.

Over Rs 40,700 crore sanctioned to 1.8 lakh accounts under Stand-Up India Scheme
- As much as Rs 40,710 crore sanctioned to over 0.18 million accounts under the government’s flagship Stand Up India Scheme during the last seven years since its inception.
- Of the funds sanctioned till March 21, 2023, about 80 per cent of the loans have been given to women entrepreneurs.
- Rs 33,152.43 crore was sanctioned to 0.14 million accounts of women while Rs 5,625.5 crore was sanctioned to 26,889 SC accounts.
- Just Rs 1,932.5 crore was sanctioned to 8,960 accounts of ST members.
- Stand Up India Scheme was launched on April 5, 2016 to promote entrepreneurship amongst women, Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories and to help them in starting a greenfield enterprise in manufacturing, services or the trading sector and activities allied to agriculture.

RBI imposes monetary penalty on two urban cooperative banks in Gujarat
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed monetary penalties on two urban cooperative banks in Gujarat — Vadodara-based Shree Chhani Nagrik Sahakari Bank and Jamnagar People’s Cooperative Bank.
- The Vadodara-based bank was found buying insurance policies from one of its directors operating as an agent of an insurance company and a penalty of Rs 4 lakh was imposed for deficiencies in regulatory compliance.
- Similarly, a monetary penalty of Rs 1 lakh was imposed on the Jamnagar People’s Cooperative Bank Limited for “contravention of directions issued by the RBI on income recognition, asset classification and provisioning norms for loans and advances”.

Direct Tax Collections Exceeds Union Budget Estimates by 16.97%
- The Central Board of Direct Taxes, under the Ministry of Finance, released the provisional figures for direct tax collections in the Financial Year (FY) 2022-23.
- The gross direct tax collections (provisional) for FY 2022-23 amount to Rs. 19.68 lakh crore, which is a 20.33% growth rate from the previous financial year, which was Rs. 16.36 lakh crore.
- The net direct tax collections (provisional) for FY 2022-23 are at Rs. 16.61 lakh crore, recording a growth rate of 17.63% compared to the previous financial year’s Rs. 14.12 lakh crore.
- The refunds amount to Rs. 3,07,352 crores, an increase of 37.42% from the previous year’s Rs. 2,23,658 crores.

Assam signs MoU with UNDP to "strengthen" health system
- The National Health Mission of Assam signed Memorandum of Association (MoA) with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to provide technical support to Assam for strengthening the health system of the state.
- Under the terms of the MoA UNDP’s Health and Governance Unit will provide technical support to the state in Health System Strengthening and in the implementation of various health programmes such as CoWIN, eVIN, Swasthaya Sewa Abhiyan, Swasthaya Sewa Utsav and upcoming digitization initiatives to strengthen the health system in Assam.

Skyroot Aerospace successfully tests rocket engine for Vikram II
- Hyderabad-based space tech start-up Skyroot Aerospace, which last year became the first private company from the country to launch a rocket into space, announced that it has successfully test fired Dhawan-II, a 3D-printed cryogenic rocket engine.
- The engine will be used in the upper stage of their Vikram II rocket, that is slated for launch in 2024.
- However, before that, Skyroot Aerospace is aiming to commence their commercial operations with Vikram-I, slated to launch later in 2023.

Infertility Affects 1 In 6 People Worldwide, Says WHO Report
- The World Health Organisation (WHO) has released a new report that says one in six people worldwide are affected by infertility.
- The 98-page report determines that around 17.5 per cent of adults worldwide are affected by infertility at some point, and found little variation between regions and wealthy and poorer countries.
- The Guardian said in its report that the shocking figures are the global health body’s first estimates of infertility prevalence in more than a decade.
- The report is based on the analysis of existing studies conducted from 1990 to 2021.

Sports Ministry approves financial assistance for 12 para shuttlers
- The Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) has approved financial assistance to 12 para-badminton players, including Pramod Bhagat and Mansi Joshi, for their participation in the upcoming Brazil Para-Badminton International The tournament is a Level 2 event and part of the Paris Paralympics pathway for 2023.
- The funding has been cleared under ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and will cover financial assistance to the players and their support staff.
