National News

Govt to release new ₹100 commemorative coin for the 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat

  • The government will come out with a commemorative coin on the 100th episode of radio programme Maan Ki Baat which will be broadcasted.
  • The coin will be in the denomination of ₹100.
  • Though commemorative coins are considered a legal tender, they are not released for general circulation.
  • One can source them from the specified agencies.
  • According to the Finance Ministry notification, the coin will be circular, with a diameter of 44 millimetres and 200 serrations.
  • The 35-gram coin’s metal composition will be a quaternary alloy, with silver having a share of 50 per cent, copper 40 per cent, nickel 5 per cent, and zinc 5 per cent.

100 food street to come up in 100 districts: Central Government

  • Union Health Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, has requested states/UTs to develop 100 food streets in 100 districts across the country.
  • Under this unique initiative, States/UTs will receive financial assistance of Rs. 1 crore per food street/district to fill up critical gaps.
  • In addition, this assistance will be provided under the National Health Mission (NHM) in the ratio of 60:40 or 90:10, with the condition that standard branding of these food streets will be done as per FSSAI guidelines.
  • The initiative will be implemented through the National Health Mission (NHM) in convergence with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and with technical support from FSSAI.

International News

India, Bangladesh agreed to settle bilateral trade transactions in rupee, taka

  • Bangladesh and India have agreed to settle a part of the bilateral trade transactions in their own currencies Rupee and Taka to ease pressure on dollar holdings.
  • In order to facilitate cross-country transactions, Sonali Bank and Eastern Bank will open accounts in the State Bank of India and ICICI Bank.
  • The two Indian banks will also open similar accounts in the two Bangladeshi banks.
  • The opening of these accounts known as vostro and nostro accounts in global accounting will need the approval of respective central banks.
  • Bangladesh’s import from India in the last fiscal year was around USD 13.69 billion.
  • Of which, USD 2 billion will be traded in rupees while the rest will be paid in US dollars.

India signed deals with EU for cooperation in aviation safety, air traffic control

  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for cooperation in aviation safety.
  • The agreement was signed on the first day of the EU-India Aviation Summit here where the Airport Authority of India also signed a declaration of intent with Eurocontrol, a pan-European, civil-military organisation dedicated to supporting European aviation.
  • While the MoU between DGCA and EASA will focus on collaboration at regulatory level and safety level, the declaration of intent between AAI and Eurocontrol will be focused on the area of air traffic control.

13th Joint Trade Committee meeting of India and Thailand held in New Delhi

  • The 13th Meeting of India Thailand Joint Trade Committee (JTC) was held in New Delhi.
  • The meeting was co-chaired by the director general of the Department of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce of Thailand, Auramon Supthaweethum, and Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India Indu C Nair.
  • This was the first physical meeting of the JTC after it was revived in 2020, after 17 years.
  • Thailand is India’s important trading partner in ASEAN with total trade of USD 16.89 Billion in 2022-23.
  • Thailand accounts for 13.6 per cent of India’s total trade with ASEAN.
  • Thailand is an important destination for India’s gems and jewellery, mechanical machinery, auto and auto components and agricultural products, especially marine products.

India, Armenia, Iran held first trilateral political consultations in Yerevan

  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India, Armenia and Iran held the first trilateral political consultations in Yerevan.
  • The three countries had a wide range of discussions, particularly on economic issues and regional communication.
  • Sides discussed, particularly economic issues & regional communications outlined prospects of deepening cultural & people to people contacts & trilateral coop in various fields.
  • Diplomatic relations were established between the Republic of Armenia and India in 1992.

Two-day Millet Mahotsav held in Jodhpur, Rajasthan

  • In Rajasthan, a two-day Millet Mahotsav began at Jodhpur.
  • An exhibition is also being set up at the Millets Fair being organized by the Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries at CAZRI in which various millet-based products besides processing machinery will be displayed.

Assam-Arunachal Pradesh signed border pact ending decades-old disputes

  • Ending their over 50-year-old border dispute, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh signed an agreement in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah here which will bring settlement to 123 villages located along areas the two northeastern states share.
  • Assam and Arunachal Pradesh share an 804.1-km-long border which has been in dispute since the latter was made a union territory in 1972.

Govt spent Rs 1,181 crore for PLI scheme till Jan 31

  • The government had spent as much as Rs 1,181 crore as on January 31 this year for the production-linked incentive scheme, effective from April 1, 2021.
  • The department of telecommunication said that the total sales from this scheme in the month was Rs 13,541.27 crore and the total exports was Rs 5,746.90 crore.

Business and Economy

India's merchandise exports may cross USD 500 billion this fiscal

  • The country’s merchandise exports are likely to cross USD 500 billion this fiscal due to healthy demand for domestic goods in key global markets, including the US, and benefits from trade pacts, according to exporters.
  • Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) said they are targeting to take the shipments to USD 500 billion-510 billion during the current financial year.
  • Services exports are likely to reach around USD 390 billion in 2023-24 from USD 322.72 billion in 2022-23.
  • India’s exports rose by over 6 per cent to USD 447.5 billion in 2022-23 compared to USD 422 billion in 2021-22.

JSW Energy arm commissioned 51 MW wind project in Tamil Nadu

  • JSW Renew Energy Two Limited had commissioned 51 MW of wind power capacity under phase-wise commissioning of 450 MW ISTS-connected wind power project awarded under SECI tranche X in Tamil Nadu.
  • Subsequent to this, the total current installed capacity of the company has reached 6,615 MW while the under-construction capacity stands at 2,855 MW, which is likely to be commissioned in phases over the next 12-18 months.
  • JSW Energy has a target to reach 20 GW capacity by 2030 and a near-term target of 10 GW by 2025.

  • The government has appointed Arun Sinha as the appointed Chairman of the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO).
  • Arun Sinha has been an advisor in NTRO for two years.

Vodafone Idea appointed Kumar Mangalam Birla as non-executive director

  • Vodafone Idea appointed Aditya Birla group chief Kumar Mangalam Birla as an additional non-executive and non-independent director after two years.
  • Birla stepped down as non-executive chairman and director of Vodafone Idea in August 2021.

Wing Commander Deepika Misra became 1st woman IAF officer to get Gallantry Award

  • Wing Commander Deepika Misra has become the first woman Air Force officer to receive a gallantry medal.
  • President had conferred Vayu Seva Medal for gallantry on her at Independence Day last year and she received the medal from Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari at an investiture ceremony held in New Delhi.
  • Wing Commander Deepika Mishra was detailed to undertake Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations in response to flash floods in northern Madhya Pradesh in August 2021.
  • A total of 58 personnel received gallantry awards from the IAF chief.

Karnataka bagged national award for best implementation of PMFBY

  • Karnataka had bagged the national award for the best implementation of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), a crop subsidy insurance scheme, for the year 2022-23.
  • The PMFBY is a large-scale crop subsidy insurance scheme aimed to safeguard the farmers, implemented in Karnataka in 2016.
  • This scheme is being managed by the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers’ Welfare, under the Ministry of Agriculture, along with empanelled general insurance companies.

  • Exercise INIOCHOS-23 is a multi-national air exercise hosted by the Hellenic Air Force, Greece.
