National News

United Nations Development Programme and World Bank collaborate with India as knowledge partner on Digital Public Infrastructure

  • The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the World Bank collaborated with the Government of India as its knowledge partner on DPI in the Digital Economy Working Group.
  • For the first time, a description of DPI has been collectively adopted by a group of countries, as a set of shared digital systems that should be secure and interoperable, that can be built on open standards and promote access to services for all, with governance and community as core components of DPI.
  • A set of high-level guiding principles for DPI has also been endorsed that promote (among other things) governance of DPI for public benefit, trust and transparency as an inherent aspect of DPI.
  • The G20 India Presidency in partnership with UNDP launched two knowledge products on DPI to help countries advance their digital transformation journey, with speed, at scale and inclusion.
  • These were launched by the Honourable Minister of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw. 
  • The DPI SDG Compendium presents a global snapshot of the potential of DPI across all 17 SDGs, and the DPI Playbook provides practical resources on how countries can go about building their inclusive and rights-based DPI.

14th Joint Group of Customs Meeting was held Between India and Bangladesh

  • The 14th Joint Group of Customs (JGC) meeting between India and Bangladesh was held in New Delhi.
  • The meeting was co-chaired by Member (Customs), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, India and Member (Customs: Audit, Modernization and International Trade), National Board of Revenue, Bangladesh.
  • The India-Bangladesh Joint Group of Customs meetings are held on an annual basis to discuss issues relating to customs cooperation and cross-border trade facilitation.
  • These meetings play a vital role in enhancing connectivity and developing trade infrastructure for smooth customs clearance at land borders.
  • There are 62 Land Customs Stations (which include land border crossing points, railway stations and river banks/ports) along the India-Bangladesh Border in the States of West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.

20th ASEAN-INDIA economic minister's meeting

  • India participates in 20th ASEAN-INDIA economic minister’s meeting held in Semarang, Indonesia.
  • Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry represented India in the Ministers’ meet and co-chaired the meeting with Dr. Zulkifli Hasan, Minister of Trade, Indonesia.
  • The Economic Ministers or their representatives from all the 10 ASEAN countries viz. Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam participated in the meeting.
  • Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste also joined the Meeting as an observer.
  • The main agenda of this year’s meeting was the timely review of ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) which was signed in 2009.
  • India and ASEAN registered a bilateral trade of USD 131.5 billion in 2022-23.
  • The trade with ASEAN accounted for 11.3% of India’s global trade in 2022-23.

Over past 2 years Tamil Nadu had attracted ₹2.97 lakh crore investment proposals in the manufacturing sector

  • During the past two years, Tamil Nadu has attracted a total of 241 investment proposals in the manufacturing sector to the tune of ₹2.97 lakh crores.
  • many investment proposals have also been received in the non-leather footwear Industry sector that could potentially provide increased employment opportunities for women.
  • Proposals have also been received in the in e-vehicles sector.
  • The ‘Illam Thedi Kalvi’ scheme has benefitted over 27 lakh students so far and over 13 lakh students have benefitted from the ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ scheme for skill development.
  • Under the ‘Pudhumai Penn’ scheme, over 1.50 lakh girl students have benefitted.

Tamil Nadu government intended to set up ‘India Centre for Advanced Manufacturing’

  • The Tamil Nadu government in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, hosted a public-private discussion for establishing the ‘India Centre for Advanced Manufacturing’ in Chennai.
  • Proposed as an initiative to foster national and international collaboration in advanced technologies, the India Centre for Advanced Manufacturing aims to support companies in their innovation, sustainability, and R&D endeavours.
  • Drawing on the global expertise of the World Economic Forum and the insights of Guidance Tamil Nadu into local priorities, the State government intends to set up the centre in Chennai.
  • The discussion highlighted three key focus areas for the Centre — technology adoption and innovation, industry-academia engagement, and sustainable production.
  • Participants from various sectors, including electronics, automobile, and general manufacturing, actively engaged in the dialogue alongside representatives from government bodies such as the MSME Department, TIDCO, and TNSDC.

First ABDM Microsite was launched by National Health Authority in Aizawl, Mizoram

  • The National Health Authority (NHA) had announced 100 Microsites project for accelerated adoption of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) across the country.
  • Mizoram becomes the first state in India to operationalize an ABDM Microsite in its capital city Aizawl.
  • Under this, all healthcare facilities including the private clinics, small hospitals and labs in the region shall be made ABDM-enabled and will offer digital health services to the patients.
  • The ABDM Microsites are defined geographical regions where focused outreach efforts would be made to onboard small and medium scale private healthcare providers.
  • These Microsites would be majorly implemented by State Mission Directors of ABDM while the financial resources and overall guidance would be provided by NHA.
  • An interfacing agency under this program will have an on-ground team to reach out to the healthcare providers in the area.
  • This team will spread awareness about the benefits of ABDM and will help the service providers to join the core registries under ABDM besides promoting the use of ABDM enable digital solutions for regular clinical documentation.
  • Patients will be able to link the health records generated at these facilities with their Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHAs) and will be able to view and share these records using any ABDM-enabled Personal Health Record (PHR) application on their phones (https://phr.abdm.gov.in/uhi/1231).
  • NHA had previously overseen Microsites pilots in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Surat.
  • The learnings and experiences from these pilots have been incorporated in the overall structure of 100 Microsites project under ABDM.
  • Besides Mizoram, other states including Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh have also made significant progress regarding implementation of ABDM Microsites.
  • More such microsites are expected to be operational in the next few weeks.

Schemes

Mukhyamantri Seekho-Kamao yojna scheme

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan implemented the Mukhyamantri Seekho-Kamao yojna means ‘Chief Minister’s Learn-Earn’ scheme.
  • The scheme has facilitated on-the-job training on the lines of ‘learn and earn along with skill development.
  • The ‘Mukhyamantri Sikho-Kamao’ scheme has been started for the youth in the age group of 18 to 29 years.
  • Under the scheme, the selected youth will be given training according to the requirements of the industries and also get an 8 to 10 thousand rupees stipend.
  • The state government is targeted to include one lakh youth in the first phase of the ‘Mukhyamantri Seekho-Kamao’ scheme.
  • However, more than 8 lakh 69 thousand youths have already registered themselves so far.
  • A total of 16 thousand 450 establishments have also been registered.
  • These establishments have published around 69 thousand posts for the registered youth.
  • Out of them, contracts have also been signed for more than 14 thousand posts.

‘Student police cadet’ scheme

  • Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann rolled out a ‘Student Police Cadet’ (SPC) scheme to make students familiar with functioning of the police department.
  • Under the scheme, the course curriculum formulated by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) is to be imparted over a period of two years for class 8 students from the current academic year 2023-24.
  • Under the scheme, 40 students each have been enrolled from 280 government schools, taking the total tally to 11,200 students.
  • The same students will continue with the scheme in class 9 in the academic year 2024-25.
  • Mann said the state government has allocated Rs 50,000 per annum for each school for this scheme which will be implemented in all districts.
  • One class per month is to be conducted for indoor course completion, thus not leading to any significant increase in the regular school curriculum of the students, while half-day twice a month to be kept for the outdoor activities preferably after the school hours or on the weekends.

Mera Bill Mera Adhikar

  • The government will launch the ‘Mera Bill Mera Adhikar’ invoice incentive scheme, which offers cash prize from ₹10,000 to ₹1 crore, from September 1, starting with six States and Union Territories.
  • The scheme, which is aimed at motivating customers to ask for a bill every time they make purchases, will be launched in the States of Assam, Gujarat and Haryana; and the UTs of Puducherry, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
  • All invoices issued by Goods and Services Tax (GST) registered suppliers to consumers will be eligible for the ‘Mera Bill Mera Adhikar’ scheme, under which monthly and quarterly draw of lots will be made and winners will be eligible for cash reward prize.

Reserve Bank of India approved voluntary amalgamation of Twin Cities Co-operative Urban Bank, Kranti Co-operative Urban Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had approved the amalgamation of Twin Cities Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd with Kranti Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd from August 23, 2023.
  • The branch of Twin Cities Co-operative Urban Bank will function as a branch of Kranti Co-operative Urban Bank.

Bank of Baroda customers can now update Know Your Customer on video calls

  • Bank of Baroda customers can now complete re-KYC digitally in just a few minutes in a secure manner without even having to visit their branch.
  • The bank launched Video Re-KYC for eligible Individual Resident Customers.
  • Available in English and Hindi, this is an alternative and more convenient method for customers to complete the periodic updation of KYC (Know Your Customer) digitally.
  • To avail facility, customers must be resident individuals, above 18 years of age and must have their Aadhaar number and original PAN Card.
  • In the first stage, customers have to visit the Bank of Baroda website and complete the online Re-KYC application by submitting some basic information online.
  • Once the online application is submitted, the Video KYC call with the bank executive will be conducted.
  • For the Video call, customers will require their original PAN Card, a blank white sheet of paper and a blue/black pen.
  • Video Re-KYC calls will be undertaken during business hours (10:00 AM to 6:00 PM) on all working days.

Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region signed MoU with UNDP

  • Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in the presence of  Minister of State for Ministry of DoNER and Ministry of Cooperation,  Shri B.L.Verma and UN Assistant Secretary-General & Director of the UNDP Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA), Ms Ulrika Modéer, entered into an MoU wherein UNDP would provide MDoNER with technical support on fast-tracking progress on the SDGs; monitoring, evaluation and capacity building; support Aspirational districts and blocks; support in the deployment of emerging technologies in governance and in scaling up good practices.

Indian Coast Guard signed MoU with Philippines Coast Guard on enhanced maritime cooperation

  • Indian Coast Guard has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on enhanced maritime cooperation.
  • The MoU was signed by DG Rakesh Pal, Director General Indian Coast Guard and CG Admiral Artemio M Abu, Commandant, PCG at the Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi.
  • Both the sides held their first bilateral meeting on a range of maritime issues.
  • The MoU seeks to enhance the professional linkage between the two Coast Guards in the domain of Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE), Maritime Search & Rescue (M-SAR) and Marine Pollution Response (MPR).
  • The implementation of this MoU will enhance bilateral maritime cooperation between the two nations for ensuring safe, secure and clean seas in the region.
  • The first ever bilateral meeting between both the maritime agencies signifies the dedication in strengthening the professional bonds by sharing best practices, conducting joint exercises and enhancing training collaborations.

Jharkhand Police signed MoU with SBI for salary package

  • A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked between Jharkhand Police and State Bank of India (SBI) to provide additional benefits to police personnel and officials as part of their salary package.
  • The bank has accounts of around 57,000 police employees out of 65,000 in Jharkhand.
  • The bank also provides accidental insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh, air accidental cover of Rs 1 crore, Rs 50 lakh in case of permanent disability and Rs 30 lakh for partial disability.

Dholpur-Karauli in Rajasthan was 54th tiger reserve of India

  • National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) had approved Dholpur-Karauli Tiger Reserve as 54th tiger reserve of India and 5th tiger reserve of Rajasthan after Ranthambore, Sariska, Mukundra Hills and Ramgarh Vishdhari.

Power

India got its first hydrogen bus in Leh

  • NTPC Ltd, India’s largest power producer and a central PSU under Ministry of Power, has started a trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh.
  • Towards achieving carbon-neutral Ladakh, NTPC is setting up a hydrogen fuelling station, solar plant and providing five fuel cell buses for operation on intracity routes of Leh.
  • The first hydrogen bus reached Leh on August 17, 2023 as part of a three-month-long process of field trials, roadworthiness tests and other statutory procedures.
  • This will be India’s first ever deployment of hydrogen buses on public roads.
  • The first-of-its-kind Green Hydrogen Mobility Project at 11,562 feet is co-located with dedicated Solar plant of 1.7 MW for providing renewable power.
  • The project was initiated back in 2020 when NTPC invited Global Expression of Interest (EoI) to provide 10 Hydrogen Fuel Cell (FC) based electric buses and an equal number of Hydrogen Fuel Cell based electric cars in Leh and Delhi.

Sachin Tendulkar will be Election Commission’s national icon

  • Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar will become a “national icon” of the Election Commission (EC) and spread awareness regarding the need for greater voter participation in the electoral process.
  • The poll body will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Mr. Tendulkar.
  • It will be a three-year agreement as part of which the cricketing legend will spread voter awareness.

Central Government extended tenure of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Central Bureau of Investigation

  • The Centre extended the tenure of Mohit Gupta, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Central Bureau of Investigation for a further period of one year from September 4, 2023 to September 3, 2024.
  • Gupta is a 2006-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre.
  • The tenures of Raguramarajan A and Vidyut Vikash — both superintendents of police (SPs) — have also been extended.

  • Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur has announced that the Khelo India Women’s League will officially be known as Asmita Women’s League.
  • ASMITA refers to Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action.
  • The Asmita Portal serves as a comprehensive resource, offering valuable insights into upcoming leagues among other features.
  • It will enable any school, college, government, or private organization to host the ‘Asmita Women’s League’ and be part of Khelo India’s march towards sporting excellence.
