Cabinet Approval

  • The Union Cabinet approved a ₹6,000 crore sub-scheme under the flagship Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with the objective of formalising the largely unorganised fisheries sector in the country.
  • The formalisation will be done through the creation of a national fisheries digital platform, facilitating access to institutional finance for the sector and creating an insurance product which would cover at least 100,000 hectares of aquaculture farms during the project period.
  • Almost half of the total project cost, that is around ₹3,000 crores, will come from public financing that includes World Bank and the AFD external financing while the balance is expected investment from the private sector and the beneficiaries.

  • The Union Cabinet also approved an auction of telecom spectrum this year for airwaves amounting to a cumulative reserve price of ₹96,317.65 crores.
  • The spectrum will be in the 800, 900, 1,800, 2,100, 2,300, 2,500 and 3,300 megahertz (MHz), as well as in the 26 gigahertz (GHz) bands.
  • The reserve pricing is the minimum telecom companies will have to pay for acquiring this spectrum, as they will have to bid with the reserve pricing as the minimum price.
  • It also approved six Railway projects with a total estimated cost of ₹12,343 crores to be fully funded by the Union government.
  • The multi-track proposals will ease operations and reduce congestion, providing much-needed infrastructural development on the busiest sections across Indian Railways.
  • The projects cover 18 districts in 6 States (Rajasthan, Assam, Telangana, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Nagaland) and will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by 1,020 km.
  • The Union Cabinet also approved extension of Fisheries Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) for another 3 years upto 2025-26 within the already approved fund size of ₹7522.48 crores and budgetary support of ₹939.48 crores.

  • The Maharashtra government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Google to utilize Artificial Intelligence, AI for solutions in sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture.

  • This collaboration will empower citizens with critical future-ready skills, revolutionize essential sectors like healthcare and agriculture, and create a thriving environment for the Maharashtra AI startups through the AI Center of Excellence at IIIT Nagpur.

Union Agriculture Minister unveils LMS, Krishi Rakshak Portal, Helpline (KRPH) – 14447, and SARTHI Portal for Agricultural Enhancement and Farmer Empowerment

  • Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda launched the centralized “Kisan Rakshak Helpline 14447 and Portal”, Agri-Insurance Sandbox Framework Platform SARTHI and Learning Management System (LMS) Platform for the farming community under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in Delhi.
  • Since its inception in 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has been a safety net for farmers in India, protecting them from the unpredictability of nature through crop insurance.
  • It became crucial for the scheme to ensure farmers could navigate the claim process, submit grievances, seek information on their queries and obtain timely assistance without difficulty.
  • To address these challenges and ensure prompt support for farmers, the Government has introduced the Krishi Rakshak Portal and Helpline (KRPH) 14447.
  • This platform provides multilingual support, enabling transparent communication and real-time resolution of grievances related to compensation delays and insurance queries.
  • By streamlining processes and offering accessible assistance, KRPH underscores the Government’s steadfast commitment to the welfare and prosperity of the farming community.

Bihar CM Nitish launched Device 'NITISH' for farmers

  • Bihar State Disaster Management Authority(BSDMA) and IIT Patna, has introduced a device matching the CM’s name for farmers and common people. This device has technology to alert them on lightning, floods, heatwaves, and coldwaves.
  • Termed as Novel Initiative Technological Intervention for Safety of Humanlives (NITISH).
  • It is the outcome of a joint efforts of the disaster management authority and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Patna.
  • This has come up with a pendant-shaped device that will sound alert to its users through voice message on lightning, floods, heatwaves and coldwaves.
  • The device is synced with the Bihar meteorological service centre.

Frame glasses from Brilliant Labs is world’s 1st wearable tech with multimodal AI assistant

  • Apple’s Vision Pro has paved the way for sleek smart glasses that can change the way we consume information.
  • Just as the Vision Pro is making waves across the world with its futuristic capabilities, Singapore-based consumer electronics company Brilliant Labs has come up with the world’s first glasses powered by an integrated multimodal AI assistant.
  • Known as Frame, the latest device is a giant leap in the wearable technology domain.
  • Frame glasses are backed by AR company Niantic Labs known for Pokemon Go. The Frame glasses are currently available for pre-orders at $349.
  • The company is also backed by OpenAI and Perplexity AI.
  • The high-tech pair of glasses will be shipped in April and users may get free AI service with some limit on daily cap requests.
  • Reportedly, the makers have plans to announce a paid AI plan at a later stage.

India ranks in World Bank's Logistics Performance Index Report 2023

  • According to the World Bank’s ‘Logistics Performance Index Report (2023): Connecting to Compete 2023‘, India ranks 38 out of 139 countries.
  • India’s rank has improved by six places from 44 in 2018 and 16 places from 54 in 2014.
  • These stakeholder Ministries/Departments focus on targeted action plans with interventions needed to improve logistics performance across all six LPI parameters i.e. Customs, Infrastructure, Ease of arranging shipments, Quality of logistics services, Tracking and Tracing, and Timeliness.
  • In addition, National Committee for Trade Facilitation (NCTF) has a three-tiered structure, constituting of a National Committee on Trade Facilitation, a Steering Committee, and Focused Working Groups (Outreach, Legislative Issues, Time Release Study, Infrastructure Up-gradation, PGA regulation and procedure).

Prime Minister Modi announces Bharat Ratna for Charan Singh, Narasimha Rao, and MS Swaminathan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Former Prime Ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao and MS Swaminathan and will be conferred the Bharat Ratna.
  • Chaudhary Charan Singh was 5th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, 3rd Deputy Prime Minister under Moraji Desai and also the 5th Prime Minister of India.
  • Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao was 4th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and 9th Prime Minister of India.
  • Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan was known as Father of Green Revolution and he was also awarded with Padma Shri (1967), Ramon Magsaysay Award (1971), Padma Bhushan (1972), World Food Prize (1987) & Padma Vibhushan (1989).
  • MS Swaminathan was the person who was awarded with India’s fourth, third, second and first highest civilian awards.

India win SAFF U-19 Women's Championship

  • The Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) has approved financial assistance to 12 para-badminton players, including Pramod Bhagat and Mansi Joshi, for their participation in the upcoming Brazil Para-Badminton International The tournament is a Level 2 event and part of the Paris Paralympics pathway for 2023.
  • The funding has been cleared under ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and will cover financial assistance to the players and their support staff.

  • Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the Logo, Anthem, Mascot, Jersey and Torch of 4th edition of Khelo India University Games – 2023, in Guwahati.
  • The mascot, named “Ashtalakshmi”, represents a butterfly adorned with wings featuring cultural motifs and colours from each scale, depicting a visually captivating representation of the diverse beauty of Northeast India.
