Geological Survey of India (GSI) Hosts Workshop on ‘Offshore Exploration: Synergies and Opportunities (OESO)’ in Mangalore

  • The Marine and Coastal Survey Division (MCSD) of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) successfully concluded its workshop titled “Offshore Exploration: Synergies and Opportunities (OESO)” in Mangalore.
  • The workshop was a significant collaborative effort aimed at advancing offshore exploration in India.
  • Ministry of Mines Secretary L. Kantha Rao inaugurated the workshop.
  • The workshop agenda encompassed a wide array of topics, including an overview of GSI’s activities in the offshore, government initiatives in promoting exploration and exploitation, collaborative frameworks for data sharing, and sustainable practices for offshore mineral exploration.
  • The workshop sought to establish mechanisms for effective data sharing and collaboration among agencies involved in offshore exploration, fostering a conducive environment for joint research initiatives, information sharing, and technical expertise exchange to drive innovation and exploration in offshore mineral resources.
  • The workshop featured presentations from leading experts from MoES, NIO, NCPOR, ONGC, NIOT, IREL (India) Ltd. and DGH covering topics ranging from data acquisition to environmental considerations, providing participants with valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities within the offshore exploration sector.

Sarbananda Sonowal launches ‘Sagar Aankalan’ guidelines for Indian Port Performance Index

  • The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal launched ‘Sagar Aankalan’ guidelines during the stakeholders meet for implementation of the MoUs signed earlier at the Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS 2023).
  • The “Sagar Aankalan” Guidelines for National Benchmarking of Indian Ports Performance would be applicable to all Indian seaports with an aim to achieve; Mapping and benchmarking of Indian Port’s – logistics performance and efficiency, Harmonisation of standards, definitions and performance with global benchmarks, Improving competitiveness, efficiency and overall performance of the port sector with focus on improvement, productivity, sustainability and customer satisfaction.
  • The GMIS Report as well as M.Tech in Drediging Technology course at IIT, Chennai were also launched.

‘National Workshop on Urban Livelihoods’ organised by MoHUA in collaboration with UNDP

  • A two-day national workshop convened in Ranchi, Jharkhand, under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
  • With participation from about 150 delegates from across the country, the workshop served as a platform for high-level deliberations on emerging trends and opportunities in urban livelihoods, with a primary focus on bolstering resilience and empowerment for women across urban India.
  • Participants included State Mission Directors of the State Urban Livelihoods Mission, senior officials from MoHUA and Jharkhand state government, senior officials from UNDP India, leading sector experts, and representatives from research institutions, start-ups, philanthropies, and donor organizations.
  • The event featured multiple panel discussions focusing on enabling strategies to foster women-led urban livelihoods and emerging sectors and types of enterprises in climate, services, retail, and manufacturing.
  • It also explored other themes like the Multidimensional Poverty Index (NMPI) and the role of philanthropies in addressing issues of urban poverty through identifying priority areas and innovative financial investments.

Odisha declares Gupteswar in Koraput district as its fourth biodiversity heritage site

  • The Odisha government has declared the Gupteswar forest in Koraput district as its fourth Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS).
  • The forest is adjacent to the Gupteswar Shiva temple in the Dhondrakhol reserve forest under the Jeypore forest division.
  • Earlier, the State government had declared Mandasaru in Kandhamal district, Mahendragiri in Gajpati, and Gandhamardan in Bargarh and Bolangir districts as Biodiversity Heritage Sites.
  • The Gupteswar forest site spread over 350 hectares of area is having sacred grooves traditionally worshiped by the local community and bestowed with a wide range of flora and fauna.
  • As per the biodiversity inventory and survey conducted by the Odisha Biodiversity Board, the site has 608 faunal species including 28 species of mammals, 188 species of birds, 18 species of amphibia, 48 species of reptiles, 45 species of pisces, 141 species of butterflies, 43 species of moths, 30 species of spiders, 6 species of scorpion, and 20 species of lower invertebrates.

Union Culture Minister lays foundation stone for constructions of railway station at Komuravelli in Siddipet, Telangana

  • Union Minister for Tourism, Culture and Development of Northeast Region Kishan Reddy laid the foundation for stone for the construction of a railway station at Komuravelli in Siddipet district of Telangana for the benefit pilgrims visiting the Mallikarujuna Swamy Temple.
  • The proposed station is located 3 km from the temple and once the entire railway project is completed it will provide a rail link to important pilgrim centres such as Vemulawada, Bheemeshwaralayam, Kondagattu, Koti Lingeshwara Temple and others.
  • It will also become the shortest distance between Hyderabad and Karimnagar.
  • The Centre has provided close to ₹30,000 crore in the last 10 years for the development of railway infrastructure in Telangana, including the development of 40 major and minor railway stations in the region with free wi-fi facilities.

11th International Puppet Festival kicked off in Chandigarh

  • The 11th International Puppet Festival was kicked off at Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh.
  • The department of cultural affairs will hold the 11th edition of the International Puppet Festival in collaboration with Tagore Theatre Society.

Haryana CM Launches ‘Van Mitra’ Scheme To Encourage Participation In Tree Planting

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched the ‘Van Mitra’ scheme and its portal to encourage community participation in tree planting activities in non-forest areas.
  • The members of families with an annual income of less than ₹1.80 lakh can register to become ‘Van Mitras’.
  • The objective of this scheme is to directly involve the local public in increasing forest areas across the state, ensuring an increase in the survival rate of afforestation, and promoting tree planting in non-forest areas.

IRDAI launches regulations for insurance electronic marketplace Bima Sugam

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) announced Bima Sugam—Insurance Electronic Marketplace formed under the Companies Act, 2013—will be a not-for-profit entity.
  • As per the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Bima Sugam – Insurance Electronic Marketplace) Regulations, 2024, consumers shall not be charged for availing services of Bima Sugam.
  • The company will be operative and accessible at all times and will not store or hold any data, with the board of the company also having a policy on a revenue model which is self-sustainable.
  • The company will also have two nominees from the Irdai on its Board, apart from having the company’s own chairman and CEO, who will be appointed with the consultation of the Irdai.
  • The shareholding of the company will be widely held amongst Life insurers, General Insurers, and Health insurers, with no single entity having a controlling stake.
  • The shareholders, as and when required, will contribute to the capital requirement of the Company.

Outward FDI rises 25.7% to $2.1 billion in January 2024

  • According to Reserve Bank of India data, India’s outward foreign direct investment (FDI) commitments rose by 7 per cent on a year-on-year (Y-o-Y) basis to $2.09 billion in January 2024, compared to over $1.66 billion in January 2023.
  • Sequentially, they declined from $2.5 billion in December 2023.
  • Outbound FDI, expressed as a financial commitment, comprises three components – equity, loans, and guarantees.
  • The equity commitments rose to $760.9 million in January 2024 from $597.4 million in January 2023.
  • It was lower than the $834.7 million recorded in December 2023.
  • Debt commitments increased to $306.2 million in January 2023 from $215.6 million a year ago.
  • However, it more than halved from $687.9 million in December 2023.
  • Guarantees for overseas units rose to $1.02 billion in January this year from $854.1 million in January 2023.
  • They were also up marginally compared to $988.4 million in December 2023.

India is the third largest digitalised country in the world

  • According to the State of India’s Digital Economy Report, 2024, by Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), India is the third largest digitalised country in the world, only behind the United States of America (USA) and China.
  • The study is based on ‘CHIPS’ framework wherein it has scored countries on five pillars – connect, harness, innovate, protect and sustain.
  • the state of digitalisation in India is better than some developed countries including the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan, compared by their aggregate level of digital­isation.
  • However, at the level of individual users, India is ranked 12th in terms of digitalisation among the G20 countries.

SIDBI Unveils Impact Study of Fund of Funds for Startups: CRISIL Report Highlights Transformational Effects

  • The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) unveiled the CRISIL impact assessment report titled “Prabhaav”.
  • The FFS, a pivotal component of the Startup India Action Plan initiated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016, has emerged as a flagship program of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), revolutionizing the country’s startup ecosystem.
  • Managed by SIDBI on behalf of DPIIT, the FFS contributes to the corpus of category I & II Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), with a primary mandate to fuel investments in startups.
  • The CRISIL report, unveiled by Ramann, Chairman & Managing Director of SIDBI, alongside other key dignitaries, underscores the profound impact of FFS on various facets of the startup landscape.

APEDA catapults agricultural exports from modest USD 0.6 billion exports in FY1987-88 to USD 26.7 billion in FY 2022-23

  • From its modest beginnings with annual exports of $0.6 billion in exports during 1987-88, proactive interventions by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) have taken agricultural exports to a remarkable figure of $26.7 billion in the fiscal year 2022-23.
  • This journey of exponential growth is underscored by expanding the export basket to over 200 countries, showcasing a commendable Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 12%.
  • In the fiscal period 2022-23, India’s agricultural exports reached $53.1 billion, with APEDA contributing a significant 51% of India’s Agri-exports.
  • In the period April-December, 2023, among the 23 Principal Commodities (PCs) in APEDA’s export basket, 18 exhibited positive growth.
  • Notably, 13 out of 15 large PCs, with exports exceeding $100 million in the previous year, experienced positive growth, with an average growth rate of 12%.
  • Fresh fruits emerged as a standout performer, registering a remarkable growth of 29%.
  • Moreover, the export of processed vegetables surged by 24% in the period followed by Miscellaneous processed items, Basmati Rice, and Fresh Vegetables also saw substantial growth compared to the corresponding period last year.
  • Notably, India has significantly expanded its fresh fruits export footprint, now serving 111 countries compared to 102 destinations in the previous year.

Reserve Bank of India signed MoU with Nepal Rastra Bank for UPI-NPI linkage

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had entered into an agreement with Nepal Rastra Bank for integrating the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) of India and the National Payments Interface (NPI) of Nepal for cross-border remittances.
  • The integration is aimed at facilitating cross-border remittances between the two countries by enabling users of the two systems to make instant, low-cost fund transfers.
  • As per the Terms of Reference exchanged between the two central banks, the necessary systems will be put in place for interlinking of UPI and NPI, whereas the formal launch of the linkage, i.e., the commencement of operations, will be done at a later date.
  • Post-implementation, users of these applications will be able to conduct instant transactions at a lesser cost between the countries.
  • The collaboration between India and Nepal in linking their fast payment systems through the UPI-NPI linkage will deepen financial connectivity and reinforce the enduring historical, cultural, and economic ties between the two countries.
  • Recently, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and France have enabled the Indian digital payment system — UPI in these countries.

Tata Steel signs MoU with IIT Bhubaneswar to foster innovation

  • Tata Steel signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IIT Bhubaneswar Research and Entrepreneurship Park (IIT Bhubaneswar REP) to foster innovation, research, and entrepreneurship in projects of mutual interest.
  • Under the MOU, Tata Steel and IIT Bhubaneswar REP, a company promoted by IIT Bhubaneswar, have joined hands to explore collaboration in different areas including materials processing and modelling, energy and environment, and low carbon steel production and circular economy.
  • The MoU was exchanged between V.   • The 16th conference of the World Social Forum (WSF) 2024 commenced in Kathmandu, Nepal.
  • The five-day WSF 2024 under the “Another World is Possible” banner aims to open horizontal exchange among civil society organisations, social movements, trade unions and individuals opposing neoliberal globalisation.
  • The event opened with a Solidarity March starting from the main venue at Bhrikutimandap and passing through Bhadrakali, New Road Gate, Ratna Park and back to Bhrikutimandap.
  • The Forum serves as a vital platform for open and horizontal exchange among civil society organisations, social movements, trade unions and individuals opposing neoliberal globalisation.
  • This edition of the WSF will focus on a myriad of pressing issues including economic inequality, climate justice, labour, migration, caste discrimination, gender equality, peace, sustainable development and many others, to engage in dialogue and actions that challenge neoliberal globalization and promote a more equitable, sustainable, and just world.

ISRO launches INSAT-3DS meteorological satellite

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched INSAT-3DS meteorological satellite onboard a Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle F14 (GSLV-F14), from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
  • INSAT-3DS satellite aims to augment the study of the Earth’s surface and oceanic observations.
  • INSAT stands for Indian National Satellite System.
  • The satellite weighing 2,274 kg, once operational, would serve various departments under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting, and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services.
  • This is the second mission for the Bengaluru headquartered space agency in 2024 after the successful launch of PSLV-C58/EXPOSAT mission on January 1.
  • The life of the INSAT-3DS mission is expected to be around 10 years.

Uttar Pradesh government plans to set up 8 renewable energy projects worth over ₹67,000 crores

  • Uttar Pradesh have proposed to set up eight projects worth more than ₹67,000 crores in a boost to the state’s power sector, leading renewable and hydroelectric energy firms in the state.
  • The projects, with a combined capacity of 13,250 megawatt (Mw), will be developed by private sector entities, including Torrent Power, Greenko Group, JSW Neo Energy, ACME Cleantech Solutions, Amunra Infratech and Agritech, and Avaada Water Battery.
  • These projects will come up at Sonbhadra (6 projects), Chandauli and Mirzapur (1 each) districts.
  • The biggest project, based on pumped storage power (PSP) model, will be developed by Torrent Power in Sonbhadra to generate 4,150 Mw of hydropower with an investment of ₹24,200 crores.
  • Similarly, Greenko Group will invest over ₹17,000 crores to generate 3,660 Mw of energy in Sonbhadra.
  • The project is expected to make a transformative impact in the Obra Block of economically backward Sonbhadra district.
  • The projects may be launched at the Groundbreaking Ceremony (GBC) 4.0 in Lucknow along with more than 14,000 projects worth ₹10 trillion.

Prime Minister lays Foundation Stone of NHPC’s 300 MW Karnisar-Bhatiyan, Bikaner Solar Power Plant with investment of over ₹1732 crores

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the 300 MW Solar Power Plant located at Karnisar-Bhatiyan vilage, in Poogal Tehsil, Bikaner, Rajasthan through video conferencing mode.
  • The project is being set up by NHPC Limited under Government of India’s CPSU Scheme, Phase-II, Tranche-III with a total investment of over ₹1,732 crores.

Legendary chef Imtiaz Qureshi passed away

  • Legendary chef Imtiaz Qureshi, who was known for having revived the old-Lucknowi tradition of dum pukht style of cooking passed away at 93.
  • For his contributions to the culinary arts, he was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in 2016, becoming the first in the chef community to receive it.

Ravichandran Ashwin surpasses Anil Kumble to become fastest Indian to reach 500 Test wicket

  • Ravichandran Ashwin became the second fastest man (98 matches) to 500 wickets, only second to Muttiah Muralitharan (87 matches).
  • He is only the second Indian to do so after Anil Kumble, who finished with 619 wickets.
  • He also surpassed BS Chandrasekhar to become India’s leading wicket-taker against England in Test cricket.

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) clears capital acquisition proposals worth ₹84,560 crore to boost the capabilities of the Armed Forces & Indian Coast Guard

  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh, accorded approval for Acceptance of Necessity (AoNs) for various capital acquisition proposals amounting to ₹84,560 crores.
  • In the true spirit of ‘Aatmanirbharta’, the approvals accorded lay special emphasis on procurement of various equipment from Indian vendors.
  • The DAC has accorded AoN under Buy {Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDDM)} category for procurement of a new generation of Anti-tank mines having seismic sensor and provision of remote deactivation with additional safety features.
  • In order to enhance the operational efficiency and domination in the Tactical Battle Area for engaging targets that are Beyond Visual Line of Sight by the Mechanised Forces, the AoN under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category has been accorded for procurement of Canister Launched Anti-Armour Loiter Munition System.
  • Further, to strengthen the Air Defence Systems, especially the capabilities to detect slow, small and low-flying targets as well as surveillance, detection & tracking of different targets, the AoN has been accorded for procurement of Air Defence Tactical Control Radar under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.
