Denmark’s green fuels alliance to boost sustainable energy solutions sector

  • At the Global Investors Meet (GIM) 2024, Denmark announced a Green Fuels Alliance India (GFAI) initiative to boost collaboration between the two countries in the sustainable energy solutions sector and advance its joint global goal towards carbon neutrality.
  • Led by the Danish Embassy and the Consulate-General of Denmark in India, the alliance is a strategic initiative poised to play a pivotal role in advancing the green fuels sector, including green hydrogen, by fostering innovation, collaboration, and partnerships between Danish industries and their counterparts in India.
  • The GFAI’s primary objective is to promote sustainable energy growth in India by establishing an ecosystem that encourages collaboration among businesses, government entities, research institutions, and financial stakeholders.
  • Nine pioneering Danish organisations — Maersk, Topsoe, Umwelt Energy, Mash Makes, European Sustainable Solutions, Novozymes, Danfoss, Brdr.
  • Christensen and Hydrogen Denmark — have committed themselves to the GFAI initiative as founding members.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visit to United Kingdom

  • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral talk with his British counterpart Grant Shapps in London.

10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) 2024

  • Infibeam Avenues, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat Government, with a proposed investment of ₹2,000 crores by the financial year 2030 (FY30) and aims to develop its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub for developing AI technology for payments and platforms aimed at servicing
  • Gautam Adani announced an investment of over ₹2 lakh crore in Gujarat, largely in building a green energy park that would be visible even from space.
  • Fintech firm One97 Communications, which owns Paytm brand, plans to invest ₹100 crores in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) to build a global financial ecosystem.

World Bank to provide ₹2,328 crore aid for flood management project to Maharashtra

  • The World Bank has given its consent to finance a flood management project that entails diverting surplus rain water from Kolhapur and Sangli region to drought-hit Marathwada of Maharashtra.
  • The project costs ₹3,326 crores and the World Bank will provide ₹2,328 crores in financial assistance.
  • The remaining ₹998 crores will be provided by the state government.

Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2024

  • Renga Polymers, the Karur-based garment company will invest ₹100 crores for setting up a green field PET Bottle recycling facility at Thennilai and Manavasi in Karur in western Tamil Nadu.
  • The project will use the latest technology for recycling waste PET bottles to value added products like fibers, yarns and garments.
  • This investment is aimed to increase rPSF capacity by six times to 130 tonnes per day.
  • The end of use of the company’s products will go into technical textiles, woven and knitted products

NABARD pegs credit plan estimate for Kallakurichi at over ₹12,000 crores for 2024-25

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has pegged the Potential Linked Credit Plan (PLP) for Kallakurichi district at ₹12,085.88 crores for the year 2024-25.
  • The projected credit potential for the priority sectors of the district for 2024-25 is 31% more than the previous year’s estimated credit flow potential.
  • It is also 41% higher than the current year’s Annual Credit Plan (ACP) target.
  • The PLP will be the reference for the preparation of the ACP by Indian Bank.

  • Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying Parshottam Rupala inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for the project to modernize and upgrade the Paradip Fishing Harbour in Paradip, Odisha.
  • The Central Government has approved the proposal of the Paradip Port Authority for modernization and upgrading of the Paradip Fishing Harbour at a total estimated cost of ₹108.91 Crores with 100% central financial assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) in collaboration with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways under the Sagarmala Scheme.
  • This Fishing Harbour Project shall be implemented by Paradip Port Authority with a completion period of 18 months.

"Yogyasree", a new social welfare scheme for SC/ST Students

  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee introduced a free training module for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students in West Bengal for various entrance and competitive examinations under the name of “Yogyasree”, a new social welfare scheme.
  • Fifty centres will be opened all across the state where the SC and ST students will be able to take training completely free of cost for competitive examinations.
  • Similar 46 centres will offer free training to the SC & ST students for students aspiring for government jobs, civil services etc.
  • She also introduced a toll free anti-ragging number for students and said notification should be put up in all colleges and universities.

PFC gets Reserve Bank nod to set up finance company in GIFT City

  • Power Finance Corporation (PFC) received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to set up a wholly-owned finance company in the GIFT City in Gujarat.
  • The entity at the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) will present new business opportunities for PFC and contribute to the growth of the country’s power sector.
  • PFC is an infrastructure finance company under the power ministry.

Karnataka Bank signed pact with Digivriddhi to offer financial services to dairy farmers

  • Karnataka Bank has partnered with fintech company Digivriddhi (DGV) to offer financial services catering to the needs of dairy farmers and milk societies.
  • The services will be made available at village dairy co-operative societies associated with milk unions of Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF).
  • To begin with, the services are now made available to milk societies associated with Chamarajnagar Milk Union.

  • The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), in collaboration with Government of Assam involving eight North Eastern states and four states of Eastern region, is organizing the two-day Conference.
  • This is the 26th Regional Conference convened by DARPG during the period 2014-2024.
  • The 2-day Regional Conference with focus on e-Governance will showcase all Award-Winning nominations across India under the National e-Governance Awards Scheme, 2023.
  • Paban Kumar Borthakur, Chief Secretary, Government of Assam and Srinivas, Secretary, DARPG will also address the inaugural session.

Rear Admiral Upal Kundu assumes charge as Chief of Staff at Southern Naval Command

  • Rear Admiral Upal Kundu has assumed charge as Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command (SNC).
  • An alumnus of the Indian Naval Academy, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1991.
  • He is an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) specialist and commanded guided missile frigate INS Trikand, missile corvette INS Kuthar, erstwhile INS Akshay, and ashore units — INS Tanaji and INS Kadamba.

Hindustani classical singer Ustad Rashid Khan passes away

  • Hindustani classical musician Ustad Rashid Khan passed away at 55.
  • Ustad Rashid Khan was born in Sahaswan, Badayun, Uttar Pradesh on 1 July 1968.
  • The classical vocalist was also awarded the Padma Shri as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2022.

Varun Tomar and Esha Singh won gold in Asian shooting championship

  • Esha Singh and Varun Tomar won the Olympic quota with gold medals in the men’s and women’s air pistol in the Asian shooting championship in Jakarta, Indonesia.
  • It was the second Olympic quota in men’s air pistol, and the first in women’s air pistol.
  • Rhythm Sangwan won the bronze, while the third Indian, Surbhi Rao was sixth.
  • Esha Singh, Rhythm Sangwan & Surbhi Rao won women’s 10m air pistol team gold medal.
  • India also secured the gold medal in the men’s 10m air rifle team event with Varun Tomar, Arjun Singh Cheema and Ujjawal Malik.
  • India have now secured 15 quotas in shooting for the 2024 Paris Olympics, matching the tally from Tokyo 2020.

  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) or NRI Day is annually celebrated in India on January 9.

DRDO launches indigenous assault rifle 'Ugram' for armed forces

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) launched Ugram, a state-of-the-art assault rifle of the 62 x 51 mm calibre.
  • Dr Shailendra V Gade, Director General, Armament and Combat Engineering Systems of the DRDO, unveiled the first operational prototype of the assault rifle in Pune.
  • Ugram, which means ferocious, has been developed and manufactured by DRDO’s Pune-based facility Armament Research and Development Establishments (ARDE) has developed the rifle along with Hyderabad-based Dvipa Armour India Private Limited.
  • It is designed for the operational requirements of armed forces, paramilitary and state police forces.
  • It has been designed based on the General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQRs) of the Indian Army.
  • It weighs less than four kilograms and has an effective range of 500 metres.
  • Having a 20-round magazine, the rifle has a rivet-free design and is capable of firing in both single as well as full auto mode.
  • The project was taken up in a mission mode two years ago and more than ₹800 crores was given for the project.
