  • The One District One Product (ODOP) programme under Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry has successfully enlisted over 50 aggregators pursuing the goal of uniting organisations dedicated to promoting ‘Brand India’.
  • The 50th aggregator being Ayurvedic wellness company, Forest Essentials, presenting beauty and wellness ODOP identified value-added products to a global stage.
  • This diverse community of ODOP aggregators spans across 25+ States and Union Territories, encompassing over 160 districts in its representation.
  • This initiative aims to enlighten consumers about the origin of the ingredients in the products they use, establishing a distinct identity and fostering awareness.

NITI Aayog organises National Workshop on “Strengthening Mental Health Services and Care in India”: An initiative under State Support Mission (SSM)

  • NITI Aayog organized a National Workshop on “Strengthening Mental Health Services and Care in India” at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Karnataka.
  • The purpose of the workshop was to elicit the views of States and other stakeholders on existing gaps and challenges under the District Mental Health Program (DMHP) and also to learn from the States, their best practices, which can further be replicated in other States/UTs with their own contextualization.
  • The one-day national-level workshop was chaired by Hon’ble Member (Health), NITI Aayog.
  • The workshop was conducted as a part of the NITI–State workshop series, an initiative under the State Support Mission (SSM).

Parshottam Rupala leads Sagar Parikrama Yatra Phase- XII in West Bengal

  • Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Parshottam Rupala led the Sagar Parikrama Phase-XII in West Bengal.
  • Sagar Parikrama Phase- XII program began at Digha, Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal where Shri Rupala interacted with beneficiaries.
  • The objective of Sagar Parikrama was to interact with beneficiaries at their doorstep.
  • Projects of approx. ₹150 Crores amount had been sanctioned under the PMMSY scheme which includes hatcheries, ornamental fish unit, insulated vehicles, fish feed meal, two-wheelers, auto rickshaw etc.
  • Because of this around 750 fishermen of the district got benefits and approx.16,000 KCC have been distributed to beneficiaries.

Ministry of Tourism conducts training in Chilika Lake

  • Ministry of Tourism (MoT) in collaboration with Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) launched the fifth training under the Amrit Dharohar Capacity Building Scheme for local community members, boat owners, and Forest department officials of Chilika Lake in the presence of Dr Sagnik Chowdhury, Regional Director (East), Ministry of Tourism, Dr M Ramesh, Scientist ‘E’, MoEF&CC, Dr Md Sabir Hussain, Nodal officer and Head, IITTM Bhubaneswar, Dr Amlan Naik, DFO Chilka Wildlife Division and Addl CEO, Chilika Development Authority (CDA), and other officials from CDA, and Forest Department Odisha.
  • Under this initiative, two training programmes of 15 days each namely Alternative Livelihood program (ALP), and Paryatan Navik Certificate (PNC) will be conducted.
  • With the help of the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) a total of 60 participants (30 for each course) were identified from the local communities in and around Chilika Lake to impart trainings and subsequently certifying them as nature-guides.

Sarbananda Sonowal laid foundation stone of the Regional Research Institute for Homoeopathy at Guwahati

  • Sarbananda Sonowal laid foundation stone of the permanent campus of the Regional Research Institute for Homoeopathy and Integrated Ayush Wellness Centre at Azara, Guwahati.
  • A total amount of ₹53.89 crores has been sanctioned for this project.
  • This Institute was established as a Clinical Research Unit of Homeopathy in 1984 in the rented building at Odalbakra, Guwahati.
  • Presently it is situated at Bhetapara, Guwahati in old building of Central Ayurveda Research Institute.

Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024

  • The Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 10th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar.
  • The theme of this year’s summit is ‘Gateway to the Future’ and includes the participation of 34 partner countries and 16 partner organizations.
  • The Summit is also being used as a platform by the Ministry of Development of North-Eastern Region to showcase investment opportunities in the North-Eastern regions.
  • The India-UAE Business Summit was held to strengthen bilateral ties between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as part of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024.
  • Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd has signed a ₹70,000 crore Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government for setting up 10,000 MW of hybrid renewable energy projects will be set up at Dholera in Ahmedabad, Khavda in Kutch and Banaskantha.
  • Maruti Suzuki had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Gujarat for setting up second plant in the state at an investment cost of about ₹35,000 crore.
  • The MoU encompasses two key aspects, explained Bhargava.
  • First, Gujarat has been designated as the “preferred state” for establishing the new plant.
  • Second, the production capacity of the company’s existing Gujarat plant is slated to undergo an expansion, increasing from 750,000 to 1 million units per year, by introducing a new production line.
  • The expansion will be done at a cost of ₹3,200 crore and the new production line will be in operation from 2026-27.

Nitin Gadkari inaugurates, lays foundation stones of 29 highway projects worth ₹4,000 crores in Punjab

  • Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari inaugurated 29 National Highway projects with an investment of more than ₹4,000 crore in Hoshiarpur, Punjab.
  • Construction of 4-laning of this section including Phagwara and Hoshiarpur bypass will provide 100 kmph high-speed connectivity between Phagwara and Hoshiarpur and reduce travel time from 1 hour to 30 minutes.
  • Phagwara and Hoshiarpur bypass will reduce congestion in the urban area and will provide direct connectivity to Hoshiarpur through National Highway 44 (GT Road).
  • Construction of 4-lane Ladowal Bypass connecting GT Road and National Highway 5 in Ludhiana will provide direct connectivity of Ludhiana-Ferozepur Highway to Delhi-Jalandhar Highway (National Highway 44).
  • In this, construction of 45 km, 4-lane bypass at Mukerian, Dasuiya and Bhogpur on Jalandhar to Pathankot route at a cost of ₹1600 crore and 30 km, 4-lane bypass from Tanda to Hoshiarpur at a cost of ₹800 crore was announced.

Tamil Nadu Government will implement Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission at a cost of ₹1,675 crore over five years

  • The State government has issued orders to implement the Tamil Nadu Coastal Restoration Mission over the next five years at a cost of ₹1,675 crore with World Bank support.
  • The mission includes projects to strengthen coastal biodiversity, improve coastal livelihood through sustainable tourism, and reduce plastic waste in marine environments.
  • A special purpose vehicle, named Tamil Nadu Blue Carbon Agency, will be established to monitor the restoration of mangroves and seagrass; control erosion; restore the corals at Kariyachalli Islands of the Gulf of Mannar ecosystem; and strengthen coastal management systems.
  • In the 2023-24 Budget, the government announced that a coastal restoration mission would be established at a cost of ₹2,000 crore, to be implemented over five years, with assistance from the World Bank to prevent sea erosion and conserve marine biodiversity.
  • Based on this proposal, the Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests approached the World Bank with a concept note and then submitted a project report, which has been approved.
  • The World Bank will provide ₹1,172.5 crore and the State will bear an estimated expense of ₹502.5 crore for activities to be implemented over 2024-29, according to the government order issued by Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests.

Uttar Pradesh to invest ₹8,000 crore in 1,400-acre bulk drug park

  • The Uttar Pradesh government is looking to invest around ₹8,000 crore in a proposed bulk drug park in Lalitpur district.
  • The mega enclave, spanning 1,472 acres across five villages in the arid Bundelkhand region, will help the state emerge as a leading pharmaceutical, generic medicines and medical devices hub in South Asia.
  • The Lalitpur bulk drug park, piloted by UP State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA), involves immediate development of 300 acres of land.
  • The UP government has already signed 236 memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth ₹11,000 crore with different companies and consortiums to set up their manufacturing plants.

Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2024

  • Sundram Fasteners, one of the largest suppliers to original equipment manufacturers and automakers globally, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Tamil Nadu for a proposed investment of ₹1,411 crore during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2024 in Chennai.
  • The investment will be made in Sundram Fasteners factories across Tamil Nadu situated at Padi; Mahindra World City, SEZ; Velappanchavadi; Gummidipoondi; Hosur; Aviyur, Madurai and Mittamandagapattu, Villupuram.
  • Among the aforementioned, the investments made in Mahindra World City, SEZ fall under both the Industrial Policy and the EV Policy.
  • Aquaconnect, Chennai-based aquaculture technology platform, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with StartupTN to promote blue economy initiatives in the State.
  • Through this, Aquaconnect aims to foster innovation and support the growth of new age start-ups in the aquaculture sector in the state.

Several development projects worth over ₹30,500 crore to be launched by the Prime Minister in Maharashtra

  • Prime Minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over ₹30,500 crore in the state this afternoon.
  • Among the projects include inauguration of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewari – Nhava Sheva Atal Setu in Mumbai to improve ease of mobility by strengthening urban transport infrastructure.
  • Built at cost of ₹17,840 crore, Atal Setu is the longest sea bridge in the country.
  • The country’s longest bridge, built over the Thane Creek in the Arabian Sea, connecting Mumbai to Navi Mumbai and dramatically reducing travel time.
  • The 8-km Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, officially named Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu.
  • The six-lane bridge has a 5 km stretch over the sea and about 5.5 km on land.

Indian Bank launches a co-branded credit card

  • Indian Bank has launched an ‘Indian Bank One co-branded credit card’ with FPL Technologies.
  • Leveraging the Visa and RuPay platforms, these cards will be issued by Indian Bank and managed by FPL Technologies.
  • The Indian Bank One co-branded credit card boasts of international validity with a 1% forex fee and aims to offer a range of features tailored to the diverse needs of digitally savvy Indian consumers.
  • Enabled by the OneCard mobile app, the card provides users complete digital control over their credit card experience – from usage and rewards redemption to bill payment.
  • This encompasses real-time tracking of transactions, managing expenses, converting purchases into EMIs, the credit card on UPI, redeeming rewards, planning monthly budgets, card usage controls, and facilitating smooth payments – all in-app.

NPCI expands UPI's linkage with Singapore's PayNow

  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced the launch of the UPI-PayNow linkage that will enable Indians to receive remittances directly into their bank accounts from Singapore and vice-versa.
  • Currently, users of mobile-based applications such as Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM), PhonePe, and Paytm can access the service.
  • Banks including Axis Bank, DBS Bank India, ICICI Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, and State Bank of India (SBI) provide this functionality through their respective apps.
  • Meanwhile, other third-party applications (TPAP) and bank applications such as Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, IDFC First Bank, IndusInd Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Punjab National Bank, South Indian Bank, and UCO Bank are expected to be added to the linkage soon.

India's outward FDI nosedives to $2.25 billion in December 2023

  • India’s outward foreign direct investment (FDI) commitments fell sharply to $2.25 billion in December 2023, compared to over $4.12 billion in December 2022.
  • Sequentially, they were also down from $4.0 billion in November 2023, according to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data.
  • Outbound FDI, expressed as a financial commitment, comprises three components: equity, loans, and guarantees.
  • The equity commitments declined to $646.7 million in December 2023 from $1.38 billion in December 2022.
  • It was also significantly lower than the $1.09 billion recorded in November 2023.

Rural development Ministry signs pact with SBI to facilitate loans for SHGs

  • The Ministry of Rural Development and State Bank of India a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to facilitate enterprise financing for rural self-help groups (SHG).
  • The MoU was signed by Additional Secretary Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission, Charanjit Singh and Chief General Manager, State Bank of India, Corporate office Mumbai, Shantanu Pendsey.
  • State Bank of India introduced a specialised financial product Svyam Siddha, exclusively tailored for SHG women entrepreneurs seeking loans up to ₹5 lakhs.
  • This initiative is designed to alleviate the challenges associated with extensive documentation requirements for bank loan applications and reduce the turnaround time (TAT).

Rear Admiral M Murli Mohan Raju Takes Charge at Eastern Naval Command HQ

  • Rear Admiral M Murli Mohan Raju, took charge as the CSO (Personnel & Administration) at Eastern Naval Command Head Quarters, Visakhapatnam.
  • The Rear Admiral Murali Mohan hails from Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, an alumnus of the Sainik School, Korukonda and Naval Defence Academy.
  • He was commissioned in 1990 and has a distinguished logistics career serving in various key roles, including commissioning INS Tabar in Russia, and at Western Fleet, INS Vindhyagiri, INS Viraat, INS Taragiri, & INS Delhi.
  • A proud recipient of the Nausena Medal, he headed the Naval Pay Office at Mumbai and Materials Organisation at Vizag.

Henley Passport Index 2024

  • The Henley Passport Index 2024 was released highlighted the “power” of passports of 199 countries.
  • France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore and Spain topped the list, that have visa-free access to 194 destinations.
  • South Korea, Sweden and Finland rose one spot to take joint second place, with access to 193 countries.
  • Austria, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands shared third place, allowing travel to 192 places.
  • The UK and US passports ranked fourth and seventh, respectively, with access to 191 and 188 destinations.
  • India stands at the 80th rank in the list of most powerful passports.
  • Its passport has visa-free access to 62 nations, including Angola, Barbados, Bhutan, Bolivia, Djibouti, El Salvador, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Qatar and Zimbabwe.

President of India presented Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023

  • The President of India, Droupadi Murmu conferred Swachh Survekshan awards 2023 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
  • 13 awardees received felicitations under categories of Clean Cities, Cleanest Cantonment, SafaiMitra Suraksha, Ganga Towns and Best Performing State were given away.
  • Port city Surat bagged the top honours, alongside Indore, who had conquered the top spot alone for 6 consecutive years under All India Clean City.
  • In the category of cities with a population of less than 1 lakh, Sasvad, Patan and Lonavala secured the top three spots.
  • Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh was adjudged the Cleanest Cantonment Board.
  • Varanasi and Prayagraj won the top two awards amongst the Cleanest Ganga Towns.
  • Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh won the top three awards for Best Performing State.
  • Chandigarh walked away with the award for the Best Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher.
  • Katra, the base town of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji, Jammu & Kashmir has been honoured as the “Best Clean City within Union Territory” with a population less than 1, 00,000.
  • 110 awards were bestowed during the ceremony.

ISRO presented with “Indian of the Year Award" for the year 2023 in the category ‘Outstanding Achievement’

  • Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh presented “Indian of the Year Award” for the year 2023 in the category ‘Outstanding Achievement’ to Team ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation).
  • The award, instituted by a national TV channel, was received by ISRO Chairman Somnath and Project Director of Chandrayaan 3, Dr P.Veeramuthuvel, at a glittering ceremony in New Delhi.
  • The award recognised the remarkable contribution made by ISRO in pushing the boundaries of Space exploration.

  • National Youth Day is annually observed in India on January 12 to honour the teachings and ideals of Swami Vivekananda who was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata.
  • The decision to celebrate Vivekananda’s birthday as National Youth Day was taken in 1984, and it was first marked on January 12, 1985.

DRDO conducts successful flight-test of New Generation AKASH missile off Odisha coast

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight-test of the New Generation AKASH (AKASH-NG) missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
  • The flight-test was conducted against a high-speed unmanned aerial target at very low altitude.
  • During the flight-test, the target was successfully intercepted by the weapon system and destroyed.
  • It has validated the functioning of the complete weapon system consisting of the missile with indigenously developed Radio Frequency Seeker, Launcher, Multi-Function Radar and Command, Control & Communication system.

Indian Navy will Host MILAN 24 Exercise in Visakhapatnam from 19-27 February 2024

  • Indian Navy’s multi-national exercise, MILAN 24 is all set to be held in Visakhapatnam from 19-27 Feb 2024.
  • Earlier 11th edition of this exercise was held in Feb-Mar 2022 in Visakhapatnam under the Eastern Naval Command with the theme ‘Camaraderie-Cohesion-Collaboration’.
  • MILAN is a biennial multi-national naval exercise which started in 1995 with participation of four foreign countries (Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand) in consonance with India’s ‘Look East policy’.
  • The MILAN Exercise flourished under the aegis of Andaman and Nicobar command till its 10th
  • Visakhapatnam is chosen as the preferred venue for future MILAN exercises.
  • MILAN 24 exercise would comprise two phases – ‘Harbour phase’ and ‘Sea phase’.
  • The harbour phase, aims to promote cultural sharing amongst the participating Nations and the Sea phase includes ships with Maritime Patrol aircraft and submarines of Friendly Foreign Countries.
  • The MILAN is demonstration of India’s commitment towards promoting maritime cooperation and security in the Indian Ocean region and becomes platform for nations to build partnerships, exchange ideas and enhance maritime security to build up maritime power.

Joint exercise of Indian Coast Guard and Japan Coast Guard held in Chennai

  • The five-day Joint exercise of the Indian Coast Guard and Japan Coast Guard was held in Chennai.
  • The joint training focused on pollution response training on hazardous and narcotics substances to combat maritime pollution at sea.
  • The joint exercises are been held since 2006 for joint training, professional exchange and cultural interaction between the Coast Guard of both the countries.
  • The five-day training and exercise covers important aspects of chemical pollution at sea with particular focus on hazardous chemical noxious substances, safety equipment including hands-on practical training on the response equipment.
  • The sea exercise was conducted off Chennai and joint response action against a situation of collusion between two vessels leading to man onboard a vessel and oil spill from a tanker.
  • The joint exercise was reviewed by Inspector General Donny Michael, the Commander of Coast Guard Region (EAST).
  • Japan – Tokyo (Capital) – Japanese yen (Currency) – Naruhito (Emperor) – Fumio Kishida (Prime Minister) – Japanese (Language)

Indian Navy gets its first MALE drone made by Adani

  • The Indian Navy took delivery of its first India-made Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drone, acquired under emergency procurement mechanism, to augment India’s ability to keep a close eye on the waters of the Indian Ocean.
  • Manufactured by Adani Defence and Aerospace in partnership with the Israeli firm Elbit, in Hyderabad, the Drishti 10 StarLiner, with an endurance of 36 hours, satellite connectivity and the ability to carry a payload of 450 kg, is the Indian version of the original Hermes StarLiner.
  • The UAV will fly from Hyderabad to Porbandar in Gujarat to be pressed into naval maritime operations.

Indian Navy’s P-8I Aircraft participated in Anti-Submarine Warfare Exercise

    • The Indian Navy’s P-8I aircraft has successfully reached Guam to partake in the fourth edition of the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) exercise, Ex Sea Dragon 24, orchestrated by the US Navy.
    • The focal point of this multinational exercise is to enhance cooperation and interoperability among the naval forces of the United States, Australia, South Korea, Japan, and India.
    • In Guam, the Indian Navy’s P-8I aircraft will engage in joint activities alongside counterparts such as the US Navy’s P-8A, Japan Maritime Self Defence Force’s P1, Royal Canadian Air Force’s CP-140, and Republic of Korea’s P3C.
