Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off India's first International Cruise Vessel from Chennai to Sri Lanka

  • Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the maiden International Cruise Vessel – MV Empress, India’s first international cruise vessel – from Chennai to Sri Lanka in Chennai.
  • This marks the beginning of the international cruise tourism terminal at Chennai, built at a cost of Rs 17.21 crores, heralding a new age of cruise tourism and maritime trade in the country.

EAM Jaishankar inaugurated IT centre at Namibia University built with Indian assistance

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar inaugurated the Namibia University’s fully equipped IT center, known as The India Namibia Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (INCEIT) built with Indian assistance.
  • The center, equipped with cutting-edge IT infrastructure, is a product of the collaborative efforts between India and Namibia in development, cooperation, and capacity-building.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan launched Kerala Fibre Optic Network project

  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the KFON, Kerala Fibre Optic Network project at Shankaranarayanan Thambi Hall of the State Legislative Assembly.
  • The project aims to, ensure internet facilities for all at affordable rates in the State.
  • It also aims to give free internet to over twenty lakh of poor families.
  • By providing internet facilities at a lower rate, Kerala aims to bridge the digital divide in the society.
  • During the first phase of the KFON initiative, Internet facilities will be provided to thirty thousand government institutions and fourteen thousand houses in the State.

Maharashtra: Ahmednagar to be renamed Ahilyanagar after queen

  • After renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad districts, the Maharashtra government has now decided to rename Ahmednagar district after Ahilyadevi Holkar, the Queen of Malwa Kingdom.

RBI launched financial inclusion dashboard Antardrishti

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has come up with a Financial Inclusion Dashboard named Antardrishti, a platform that will provide insights to assess and monitor the progress of financial inclusion.
  • This facility will also enable to gauge the extent of financial exclusion at granular levels across the country so that such areas can be addressed.
  • The dashboard, presently intended for internal use in the RBI, will further facilitate greater financial inclusion through a multi-stakeholder approach.
  • RBI has been promoting financial inclusion through various policy initiatives.
  • To measure the extent of financial inclusion, RBI had constructed the Financial Inclusion (FI) Index in 2021, based on three dimensions ‘Access’, ‘Usage’ and ‘Quality’.

ESAF Small Finance Bank adopted paperless initiative

  • ESAF Small Finance Bank, a leading small finance bank in India, has crossed another milestone in its digital journey with the adoption of e-signature for micro-loan disbursals.
  • As on March 31, ESAF Bank has disbursed over 5.27 lakh loans through e-signatures, showcasing its commitment to digital transformation.
  • Through the adoption of e-signatures, ESAF Bank has effectively saved reams of paper, which would have been utilised for of loan disbursement, and documentation involving handwritten signatures, thereby reducing deforestation.

389 foreign satellites launched by India in last nine years

  • Minister of State for Atomic Energy and Space Dr. Jitendra Singh has said that in the last nine years, out of 424 foreign satellites 389 foreign satellites have been launched by India.
  • Apart from the core functioning of Rocket launching, India’s Space Applications have become a big source of livelihood opportunities through 130-odd Start-ups after the opening up of the Space Sector in June 2020.

CBFC launched revamped website & new mobile app in Mumbai

  • Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has launched its revamped website and the new mobile app in Mumbai.
  • CBFC Chairman Prasoon Joshi launched the website and the newly developed mobile app.
  • The dynamically revamped CBFC website and the new Mobile app focus on making them user-friendly to learn, locate valuable information, and carry out simpler tasks by both applicants and CBFC officials at their desks and on mobile devices.
  • The CBFC website will provide timely updates on new and upcoming events, circulars, orders, notifications, etc.
  • While the newly developed Mobile App provides features such as real time progress tracking of application status and intimation of tentative screening dates, and uploading of required documents including videos of less than 10 minutes duration, which will encourage complete automation process and minimal human intervention.

Godrej Consumer appointed Aasif Malbari as CFO

  • Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL) has announced the appointment of Aasif Malbari as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the company as part of a top-level reshuffle exercise.
  • Sameer Shah, GCPL’s current CFO, will move to a Group role, leading consumer investments, GCPL.
  • Malbari is currently CFO of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd and Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited.
  • Besides, GCPL’s board of Directors also approved the nomination of Shalini Puchalapalli as Independent Director, effective November 14, 2023.
  • Puchalapalli is Managing Director and Country Head for Google Customer Solutions, where she is building the digital ecosystem for India.

Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh released India Rankings 2023 in New Delhi

  • Minister of State for Education and External Affairs, Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh released the India Rankings 2023, which implements the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) drafted for this purpose by the Ministry of Education in 2015. 
  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has been declared the best educational institute under the overall category.
  • This is the eighth consecutive edition of India Rankings of HEIs in India.
  • Three distinct additions of 2023 edition of India Rankings are as follows:
  • Introduction of a new subject namely Agriculture & Allied Sectors
  • Integration of “Innovation” ranking previously executed by the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) into the India Rankings with an aim to reduce the burden on institutions of providing similar data to two different agencies.
  • Expansion of scope of “Architecture” to “Architecture and Planning” to include institutions imparting courses in Urban and Town Planning.
  • Five Parameters: Teaching, Learning & Resources/Research and Professional Practice/Graduation Outcome/Outreach and Inclusivity/Perception
  • Each of these five parameters have 2 to 5 sub-parameters.
  • A total number of 16 – 18 sub-parameters are used for ranking of HEIs in different categories and subject domains.
  • Institutions are ranked based on total sum of marks assigned for each of these five broad groups of parameters.
  • In addition to parameters used for Overall category, the following two additional sub-parameters were included for ranking institutions under “Research Institutions”
  • i) Research Papers published in journals covered in the First Quartile of Journal Citation Report (JCRQ1)
  • ii) H Index.

Fuel emissions reduced to 9.4%: NHAI sustainability report

  • In its first-ever report on ‘Sustainability’ was recently released by the union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) claimed that direct emission was reduced from 18.44 per cent to 9.49 per cent due to less fuel consumption in three years between 2019-20 and 2021-22.
  • With over 97 per cent penetration, Electronic Toll Collection through FASTag has also contributed to reducing carbon footprint.
  • NHAI has been encouraging use of Recycled Asphalt (RAP) and Recycled Aggregates (RA) in the national highway construction.
  • More than 100 wildlife crossings were created in three years across 20 states as a measure for wildlife protection and conservation and to reduce man animal conflict.
  • NHAI has been undertaking plantation drives to develop eco-friendly national highways and there has been a significant increase in the number of saplings planted from 2016-17 till 2021-22.
  • Around 2.74 crore saplings were planted till 2021-22 to offset direct emissions from the vehicles.

Report by Redseer and Plural by Pine Labs

  • With a population of 140 crores, India is poised to become a global leader in digital payments, with households increasing non-cash transactions by 50 per cent, and 85 per cent of businesses in the country being digitally enabled by FY26, according to Redseer and Plural by Pine Labs.
  • The country accounts for more than 70 crore internet users, making it the second-highest number of internet users in the world after China.
  • According to the report, the rise of first-time e-commerce users during the Covid years accelerated the adoption of digital payments.
  • Currently, Indian households make 35 per cent of their transactions digitally, with pay-to-merchant (P2M) accounting for a significant proportion of transactions.
  • Customers use digital payment methods in 80 per cent of grocery, food delivery, and travel transactions.
  • With mobile phones facilitating seamless P2M payments, digital transactions by households are estimated to cross 50 per cent by FY26.
  • Additionally, the country’s e-commerce market is estimated to expand from ₹4 lakh crore to reach ₹9 lakh crore by FY26, with customers from tier-2 and smaller cities driving most of this growth.

Khelo India University Games 2023

  • The Khelo India University Games 2023 concluded with Panjab University reclaiming the title after three years.
  • Panjab University, who won the inaugural Khelo India University Games title back in 2020, topped the KIUG 2023 medals tally with 26 gold, 17 silver and 26 bronze medals (total – 69 medals).
  • Swimmer Siva Sridhar topped the men’s section with a total of 11 medals, including eight golds, while fellow swimmer Shrungi Bandekar won nine medals in the women’s section, including five golds.
  • Four cities across Uttar Pradesh Lucknow, Varanasi, Greater Noida and Gorakhpur hosted a majority of KIUG 2023 events.
  • Only the shooting events were scheduled in New Delhi.
  • At KIUG 2023, around 4,000 athletes, all in the under-27 category, from 205 top universities from across the country competed for 822 medals (262 gold, 263 silver and 297 bronze) across 21 different sports.
  • Rowing made its KIUG debut this year.

  • Grandmaster (GM) Aravindh Chithambaram of India won the 23rd Dubai Open 2023 for the second consecutive year.
  • The 23rd edition of Dubai Chess Open was organised by Dubai Chess & Culture Club.
  • A total of 172 participants (in category A) from more than 46 different countries participated in this tournament.
  • A total of 9 rounds were played in Swiss format.
  • He earned his international master title in 2014 and his grandmaster title in 2015.

  • International Whores’ Day or International Sex Workers’ Day is observed annually on June 2.
  • The day honours sex workers and recognises their often exploited working conditions.
  • The event commemorates the occupation of Église Saint-Nizier in Lyon by more than a hundred sex workers on June 2, 1975 to draw attention to their inhumane working conditions.

  • International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is annually observed on June 4.
  • It was established by United Nations on 19 August 1982.
  • First observed in 2011.

International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

  • International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing is annually observed on June 5.
  • On this day, the focus is to make fishing sustainable so that the marine ecosystem is not deprived of its living creatures.
  • The United Nations celebrated the first International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing in 2018.

Sixth edition of India-Maldives Exercise 'Ekatha' involving navies underway

  • Indian Navy divers and Marine Commandos are in the Maldives for the sixth edition of Exercise Ekatha with Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) from 4th June to 3rd July.
  • The annual exercise is conducted between the two forces to enhance interoperability in diving and special operations.
  • Earlier, the fifth edition was held from 5th September 2022 to 3rd October 2022, Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdullah Shamaal handed the certificates to the Indian Navy training team.
  • The High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar and the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Naval Command, Indian Navy, Vice Admiral M. A. Hampiholi handed over certificates to the Marines of Special Operations Group (SOG) of the MNDF Marine Corps.
  • Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdullah Shamaal as well as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Naval Command, Indian Navy, Vice Admiral M. A. Hampiholi addressed the attendees at the ceremony.
