National News

Cabinet Committee

  • The Union Cabinet had approved the continuation of the central sector plan ‘Exploration of Coal and Lignite scheme’ with an estimated expenditure of Rs 2,980 crore.
  • The time period for the extension is from 2021-22 to 2025-26 co-terminus with the 15th Finance Commission cycle.
  • The approval will provide an outlay of Rs 1,650 crore for promotional (Regional) exploration and Rs 1,330 crore for detailed drilling in non-CIL areas.
  • Cabinet also approved a revival plan for the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) worth Rs 89,047 crore.
  • It includes an allotment of 4G/5G spectrum for BSNL through equity infusion.
  • With this, the authorized capital of BSNL will be increased from Rs 1.5 trillion to Rs 2.1 trillion.
  • The Centre had approved the first revival package for BSNL in 2019, amounting to Rs 69,000 crore.
  • In 2022, it approved a second revival package for BSNL amounting to Rs 1.64 trillion.
  • Cabinet also has removed the procurement ceiling of 40 per cent on three pulses tur, urad and masur  under the price support scheme (PSS) for the 2023-24 crop year (July-June) to enhance domestic production.
  • The Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry said farmers are free to sell how much ever quantity of their production of tur, urad and masur under the PSS this year.
  • The ministry has also directed state governments to ensure strict enforcement of stock limits on tur and urad and monitor their prices.
  • Cabinet also hiked the minimum support price (MSP) of paddy by Rs 143 to Rs 2,183 per quintal for the 2023-24 crop year (July-June) in order to encourage farmers to bring more area under the crop and boost their income.
  • Cabinet also approved metro connectivity from HUDA City Centre to Cyber City in Gurugram with a spur line to Dwarka Expressway at a cost of Rs 5,452 crore.
  • The entire metro line covering 28.5 kilometre will be elevated and the project is expected to be completed in four years.

Centre allowed Primary Agricultural Credit Societies to open Jan Aushadhi Kendras

  • The Central Government has decided to allow 2,000 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) to open Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country.
  • 1,000 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras will be opened by August and 1,000 by December, this year.
  • More than 9,400 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been opened across the country till now.
  • 1800 types of medicines and 285 other medical devices are available in these Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
  • Medicines at Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras are available at 50% to 90% lesser rate in comparison to the branded medicines.
  • The Eligibility Criteria for the Individual applicants to open Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra is to have D. Pharma/B. Pharma.
  • Any organization, NGO, charitable organization and hospital can apply for this by appointing B.Pharma / D.Pharma degree holders.
  • For opening Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra at least 120 square feet space either privately owned or rental should be available.
  • The application fee for Jan Aushadhi Kendra is Rs.5,000.
  • Women Entrepreneurs, Divyang, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Ex-Servicemen come under Special Category.
  • Aspirational Districts, Himalayan Mountain Region, North-Eastern States and Islands are in Special Areas.
  • There is an exemption in application fee for applicants from special categories and special areas.
  • The incentive amount for Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra is Rs.5 lakh (15% of monthly purchase or maximum of Rs.15,000 per month).
  • One time additional incentive of Rs. 2 lakh as reimbursement for IT and infra expenditure in special categories and areas is also provided.

India, Argentina discuss cooperation in Tejas Combat Aircrafts

  • Indian Ambassador to Argentina, Dinesh Bhatia, Chief of Argentine Air Force, Brigadier General Xavier Isaac discussed cooperation in Tejas Combat Aircrafts and a variety of helicopter options manufactured by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
  • The South American nation in 2022 had expressed interest in the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas for Argentine Air Force.

Centre agreed to sanction Rs 12,911 crore for Polavaram Project

  • The Central government has agreed to sanction Rs 12,911 crore to Andhra Pradesh for completing the first phase of Polavaram Project.
  • The sanctioned amount of Rs 12,911 crore also includes Rs 2,000 crore to cover the extra expenditure caused by the allegedly faulty construction of the diaphragm wall built during the TDP government.

Hardeep Puri laid foundation stone of ONG's National Disaster Mitigation Centre and Yatri Niwas in Jammu

  • Hon’ble Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, and Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir Shri Manoj Sinha laid the centre’s foundation stone Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited is funding the construction of National Disaster Mitigation Centre and Yatri Niwas in Sidhra, Jammu.

Nand Baba Milk Mission Scheme

  • In a bid to make Uttar Pradesh a leading state in the field of milk development and milk production as per the intention of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Nand Baba Milk Mission was launched at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore.
  • The Nand Baba Milk Mission scheme has been implemented to provide milk producers the facility of selling their milk at a reasonable price in villages through dairy co-operative societies.
  • Cabinet Minister, Livestock and Dairy Development Department, Dharampal Singh inaugurated the Nand Baba Milk Mission office at Kisan Bazar, Vibhuti Khand Gomtinagar, the ‘Dairy Development Portal’ and also unveiled the logo of Nand Baba Mission.

SIDBI signed pact with HDFC Bank to offer financial solutions to MSMEs

  • State-owned Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HDFC Bank for providing financial solutions to MSMEs.
  • Under the MoU, SIDBI and HDFC Bank will work together to provide complete financial product and services to the customers under Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
  • The MoU will facilitate providing complete financial solutions to MSMEs in a seamless manner.
  • This arrangement will enable MSMEs to avail financial products and services of both the banks.
  • Both banks will endeavour to bring more MSMEs in financial ecosystems through the arrangement.

Bank of Baroda launched facility for cash withdrawals using UPI on its ATMs

  • Bank of Baroda announced launch of Interoperable Cardless Cash Withdrawal (ICCW) facility wherein a customer can withdraw cash using UPI from the bank’s ATMs.
  • The first public sector bank to launch this service, Bank of Baroda customers as well as customers of other participating issuer banks that use BHIM UPI, bob World UPI or any other UPI application enabled for ICCW on their mobile phone can withdraw cash from a Bank of Baroda ATM without using their debit card.

EPFO formed three committees to frame draft schemes

  • The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has formed three committees to frame draft schemes for pension, provident fund and insurance under the retirement fund body, in line with the provisions of the Social Security Code, 2020.
  • The committees are expected to submit the draft schemes to EPFO by June 23, 2023.
  • In terms of Section 15 of the Social Security Code 2020, the Central government, by notification, has to frame the following three schemes namely the Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme, Employees’ Pension Scheme and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme.
  • Additional central provident fund commissioner Sanjay Kumar and Pankaj Raman will be the co-chairperson of the 11-member committee on Employees’ Provident Fund scheme.

World Bank expected India's growth to slow to 6.3 per cent in FY2023

  • Growth in India is expected to slow to 6.3 per cent in FY 2023/24 (April-March), a 0.3 percentage point downward revision from January, the World Bank.
  • The World Bank made these points in its latest edition of Global Economic Prospects according to which global growth is projected to decelerate from 3.1 per cent in 2022 to 2.1 per cent in 2023.

Torrent Power signed pact with Maharashtra govt to build 3 hydro projects

  • Torrent Power Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government for the development of three pumped storage hydro projects of 5,700 MW capacity.
  • The projects would entail an investment of about Rs 27,000 crore and would provide employment to nearly 13,500 people during the construction period.
  • Torrent intends to execute these projects over a period of 5 years.
  • The projects would be executed at three sites identified by Torrent namely Karjat (3,000 MW) in Raigarh District, Maval, (1,200 MW) and Junnar (1,500 MW) in Pune District.

NHPC signed MoU with Maharashtra for renewable energy projects

  • State-owned hydropower company NHPC Limited has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government for the establishment of energy storage systems along with other renewable energy sources (Solar/ Wind/ Hybrid) of total 7,350 MW capacity.

KVG Bank bagged award for Atal Pension Yojana enrolment

  • Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) has bagged the national award for significant enrolment under Atal Pension Yojana (APY) from the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), New Delhi.
  • Shreekant M Bhandiwad, Chairman of KVGB, received the award from Vivek Joshi, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Government of India, and Deepak Mohanty, Chairman of PFRDA, in New Delhi.
  • Bhandiwad took charge as the Chairman in April 2023.
  • The bank has enrolled 3,42,852 (cumulative) accounts under APY.
  • During 2022-23, the bank enrolled 76,569 accounts against the target of 50,320 and achieved the target well before the time frame.
