National News

25 lakh food business operators to be trained & 100 Food Streets set up

  • Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya announced that 25 lakh food business operators will be trained by FSSAI in the next 3 years to ensure that food quality standards are met across the country.
  • He also announced the setting up of 100 Food Streets across the country which meet the quality benchmark for food safety, hygiene and nutrition.
  • The minister also unveiled several innovative initiatives by FSSAI including the Rapid Food Testing Kit (RAFT) portal.
  • This portal aims to streamline the operations of the RAFT Scheme, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • The Union Health Minister released three manuals designed to enhance food safety practices nationwide.
  • The manuals are tailored to align with the latest technological advancements in food analysis, ensuring the safety and quality of food products.
  • Stakeholders in the food industry, including food businesses, regulatory officials, and consumers, will benefit from the valuable guidance provided in these manuals.

Centre sets up 733 One Stop Centres for women security across the country so far; 300 more such centers to come up

  • The government has set up 733 One Stop Centres across the country so far and also sanctioned budget for 300 more such centers for women security. 
  • These One Stop Centres are providing a range of integrated services under one roof including police facilitation, medical aid, legal aid, counselling and temporary shelter to women affected by violence or in distress.
  • In the last nine years, more than 34 women helplines are working in the country.
  • Anganwadi Services have been strengthened in the country and all Anganwadi centres have been connected through smart phone mobile.
  • 11 lakh smartphones have been distributed to Anganwadi workers so far.
  • A system called Poshan Tracker has been set up and over nine crore beneficiaries are availing its benefits.
  • Under the maternity benefit scheme- Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana around 3 crore 32 lakh women in the country, have received 13,650 crore rupees in their bank accounts through the DBT.
  • Government has set up 1,023 fast-track courts in the country, out of which 418 courts are exclusively POCSO courts.
  • Over 780 district-wise Anti-Human Trafficking Units are working in the country.

India has emerged as the 2nd Largest Producer of Crude Steel in the world

  • Union Minister of Steel and Civil Aviation, Sh. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia held a press conference on the theme 9-years of Government’s “Seva, Sushasan and Gareeb kalyan” focusing on the Steel sector, at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • India currently ranks as the World’s 2nd Largest Producer of Crude Steel, surpassing Japan in 2018.

Health Ministry organized webinar on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Diseases (NAFLDs)

  • Shri Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had chaired a webinar for Medical Officers of District Hospitals, Community Health Centres, and Primary Health Centres, focusing on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Diseases (NAFLD).
  • In view of NAFLD emerging as a growing health concern, the primary objective of this capacity building webinar organized under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases was to foster knowledge exchange, promote collaboration, and raise awareness about NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis) and its impact on global health among medical officers in the country.
  • This Capacity Building Programme will have two tracks- the first will include regular webinars, and the second will include 3 day residential training programmes.
  • The first state to undertake this residential training programme will be Madhya Pradesh.

International News

Indian, German firm signed MoU for cooperation in Submarine Production

  • India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and Germany-based Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) signed an MoU for cooperation in submarine production, as a precursor to join a bid for an estimated Rs. 42,000 crore project to build six diesel-electric submarines for the Indian navy.
  • The MoU which is “non-binding and non-financial” in nature was signed in the presence of visiting Defence minister of Germany Boris Pistorious.
  • The German defence minister had asserted that TKMS was in a “good place in the race” for the submarine-development program that could become a “flagship project” in India-Germany defence relations.
  • According to the MoU, TKMS will engage in the engineering and design aspects of the submarines as well as the consultancy support for this joint venture, whereas Mazagon Dock will be responsible for constructing and delivering the submarines.

UN Security Council to welcome five new non-permanent members

  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) elected five countries to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for two-year terms starting on January 1, 2024.
  • These countries include Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and South Korea elected as non-permanent members of the UNSC.

  • The High Commission of India in Sri Lanka organized the India Sri Lanka Defence seminar cum exhibition at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo.
  • The event, held with the objective of fostering a stable and peaceful Indian Ocean region, aligned perfectly with India’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region or SAGAR.
  • Sri Lanka’s state minister for defence, Premitha Bandara Tennakoon, inaugurated the exhibition, marking a significant moment for bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

Odisha CM approved Rs 423.87 crores for developmental projects in 37 ULBs

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved a budget of Rs 423.87 crore for the implementation of development projects in 37 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across ten districts within the central Revenue Divisional Commission Division.
  • The funding will be allocated under the state-funded MUKTA scheme for the financial year 2023-24.
  • The ULBs of all 30 districts will be covered in the next two phases.
  • The ten districts covered in the first phase are Mayurbhanja, Balasore, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri and Nayagarha.

Andhra Pradesh government will implement new Guaranteed Pension Scheme

  • Andhra Pradesh government will be implementing a new Guaranteed Pension Scheme (GPS) for its employees.
  • One of the key decisions approved by the Cabinet is abolition of the present Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and introducing a new GPS in its place.
  • As per the new scheme, all State government employees will be eligible for a guaranteed monthly pension of 50 per cent of their last drawn basic salary.

Reserve Bank's second bi-monthly monetary policy for 2023-24

  • Repo rate remains unchanged at 6.5 %.
  • Standing deposit facility rate remains at 6.25 %
  • Marginal standing facility rate and bank rate unchanged at 6.75 %
  • Inflation forecast for FY24 marginally lowered to 5.1 %
  • GDP growth projection retained at 6.5 % for FY24
  • Growth for Q1 pegged at 8 %; Q2 6.5 %, Q3 6 %, and Q4 5.7 %.
  • CAD expected to have moderated further in Q4:2022-23, remain eminently manageable in FY24 also
  • RBI allowed issuance of RuPay Prepaid Forex cards by banks in India for use at ATMs, PoS machines and online merchants overseas.
  • Further, RuPay Debit, Credit, and Prepaid Cards will be enabled for issuance in foreign jurisdictions, which can be used internationally, including in India.

GPay introduced UPI verification through Aadhaar

  • Google Pay has introduced UPI verification via Aadhaar card.
  • The new feature will allow customers to register for Unified Paytments Interface (UPI) without the need of debit card.
  • The move is supported by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
  • Customers who want to activate UPI through Aadhaar should have a valid phone number linked to their bank and registered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Axis Bank introduced Kiwi credit card on UPI app

  • Axis Bank has partnered with Kiwi, a credit card platform, to launch the Credit on UPI app.
  • The app aims to offer a one-stop solution for RuPay credit card users.
  • With the Kiwi app, the company aims to craft a direct-to-customer model in the credit card market wherein customers can pay either using a bank account directly or a credit card via phones in a secure manner.
  • Furthermore, users of the Kiwi Credit Card will be given a digital RuPay credit card instantly through which users will be able to link the UPI and Rupay Card in the app to help them avail the Credit on UPI offers and cashback.
  • In addition, Kiwi credit card UPI app will also let the customers manage their cards by setting the card limit, blocking the card, and more.
  • Currently, the app is available only on Google Play Store.

JPMorgan, 6 Indian Banks to Settle Dollar Trades on Onyx Blockchain System: Bloomberg

  • JPMorgan (JPM) has teamed up with six Indian banks to settle interbank dollar transactions on its blockchain-based trading platform, Onyx.
  • The investment bank will run a pilot project over the coming months alongside HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank and JPM’s own banking unit in Gujarat, India.
  • The aim of the project, is to settle dollar trades in real time around the clock as opposed to over a matter of days and only during the working week.
  • Onyx, established in 2020, is the banking giant’s digital assets network for settling wholesale payment transactions.

Business and Economy

OECD raised India's FY24 growth forecast to 6%

  • The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) moved its forecast on India’s economic expansion for this fiscal year higher to 6%, from 5.9%, while citing weak global demand and the effect of monetary policy tightening as factors constraining the growth.
  • OECD expects 4.8% inflation in India in FY24.

IIT-Madras incubated space startup launches the world's 1st multi-sensor observing earth satellite

  • GalaxEye will construct the world’s first multi-sensor earth observation satellite with its support of a visible spectrum camera offering synchronized imaging that can take several pictures at the same time.
  • The startup intends to launch its first satellite, ‘Drishti Mission’ next year.
  • Founded in 2020 by Suyash Singh, Denil Chawda, Kishan Thakkar, Pranit Mehta, Rakshit Bhatt, and Prof S R Chakravarthy, GalaxEye works on deploying a constellation of satellites with a first-of-its-kind sensor based on data fusion to supply the most comprehensive pictures data set from space.

  • The Ministry of External Affairs appointed Upender Singh Rawat as India’s next High Commissioner to Uganda.
  • Upender Singh Rawat is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Officer of the 1998 batch.
  • He is currently serving as the Ambassador of India to Panama.
  • Upender Singh Rawat has served in Indian Diplomatic Missions in Slovakia, UK and Mexico.
  • He has also worked as Deputy Chief of Mission in the Indian Embassy in South Korea.

5th Food Safety Index 2023

  • Kerala has topped the Food Safety Index 2022-23, replacing Tamil Nadu which has slipped to third position.
  • Punjab stood in the second position in the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)’s 5th State Food Safety Index (SFSI), which was released by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on the occasion of World Food Day.
  • Last year, Tamil Nadu was in the top position among 20 larger states, followed by Gujarat and Maharashtra.
  • In 2020-21, Gujarat was in top position, followed by Kerala and then Tamil Nadu in the third position.
  • The index started in 2018-19 and was meant to create a competitive and positive change in the food safety ecosystem in the country.
  • The step was also taken to galvanise states and union territories to work towards ensuring safe food for citizens.
  • Among smaller states, Goa stood first for the fourth time in a row.
  • It was followed by Manipur and Sikkim.
  • Last year, these three states were in the same position.
  • Among Union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, and Chandigarh secured first, second, and third ranks.
  • This is the third time, Jammu and Kashmir have secured first position.
  • Last year too, the three UTs had secured the same positions.
  • Furthermore, he honored the winners of the Eat Right Challenge for Districts- Phase II.
  • These districts showcased outstanding efforts in implementing plans to improve the food environment and raise awareness about food safety.
  • Remarkably, most of the districts with exceptional results were located in Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
  • Out of the 260 participating districts, 31 successfully achieved a score of 75% or higher.

Gitanjali Aiyar passed away

  • Eminent Doordarshan news presenter Gitanjali Iyer passed away.
  • She was a DD news anchor for over 30 years.
  • She started her career as a journalist in 1970s and joined Doordarshan in 1975.
  • She was an anchor for the Prime Time news bulletin ‘News Tonight’ and ‘The World This Week’ and many other shows.
