International News

First Command and Control Compatibility Board meeting for 2024 between India & U.S. held in New Delhi

  • The first Command and Control Compatibility Board (CCCB) meeting for 2024 between India and the U.S. was held at Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi.
  • The meeting had participation of a 29-member United States delegation led by Mr Paul Nicholson, Executive Director, US INDOPACOM and a 38-member Indian delegation led by Brigadier Rahul Anand of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff.
  • The CCCB is the Technical Expert Group formed under Article XI of the Communication Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) between India and USA, and is held twice a year.
  • After signing of the historic agreement in September 2018, this is the 7th such meeting between both nations to calibrate, reinforce and achieve steady progress in the bilateral Defence partnership.

GRSE signs $16.6 million contract to supply advanced dredger to Bangladesh

  • Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers has signed a contract, valued at $16.6 million, with the Bangladesh Inland Waterways Transport Authority (BIWTA) to build an advanced dredger for the Government of Bangladesh.
  • Under this contract, GRSE will supply a state-of-the-art Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) with a hopper capacity of 1,000 cubic meters.
  • A trailing suction hopper dredger is a ship that has a full sailing capacity used to maintain navigable waterways, deepening the maritime canals that are threatened to become silted, to construct new land elsewhere or to replace sand eroded by storms or wave action on the beaches.

Agreements and MoUs signed

Ministry of Health sign MoU with Ministry of defence to launch Tele MANAS cell

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Defence to operate a special cell of Tele MANAS, National Telemental Health Helpline of MoHFW, as a pilot project for a period of two years at the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune.
  • Tele MANAS cell is the digital arm of the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), offering dedicated mental health assistance for all Armed Forces beneficiaries across the country
  • The initiative was first launched in October 2022 for the general people.
  • The Tele MANAS helpline, operative under the aegis of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru, has received over 10 lakh calls since its launch, with an average of 3,500 calls a day.
  • The initiative provides a toll-free number, 14416, in each State and Union Territory (UT) for easy access to mental health support.
  • Currently, India has 51 operational Tele MANAS cells functioning across all 36 states and union territories, offering services in 20 different languages.
  • The data suggested a significant demand for mental health services and underscored the importance of addressing mental health issues comprehensively and inclusively, particularly in specialised contexts like the Armed Forces.

Science and Technology

Tech giant Google announces second edition of Indian languages programme

  • Tech giant Google announced the 2nd edition of its Indian languages programme (ILP) with a focus on providing next-generation tools for newsrooms working with Indic languages.
  • The ILP 2.0 will be delivered in nine languages including English, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, Gujarati, and Marathi, and will have eight sessions featuring guest speakers, success stories, and product-focused training.

Bihar's Nagi and Nakti bird sanctuaries added to Ramsar list

  • Two wetlands in Bihar’s Jamui district, Nagi and Nakti Bird Sanctuaries, have been added to the global list of wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, boosting bird conservation efforts.
  • A Ramsar site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, also known as The Convention on Wetlands, an international environmental treaty signed on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, under the auspices of UNESCO.
  • India and China both have 82 recognised waterlogged ecosystems in the country.
  • The highest number of such sites is in the UK (175) followed by Mexico (144).

Power

SJVN's 900 MW project in Nepal to start power generation from 2025

  • SJVN expects its under-construction 900 MW Arun-3 hydro-electric project in
  • The project will start generation by 2025 and has the potential to generate 3924 million units of electricity every year
  • Google has partnered with Gurugram-based content distribution and digital services firm Mediology for the initiative.
  • The Indian Languages Programme 1.0 sought to modernise the online presence of Indian language news publishers and enhance user experiences across web, app, and video formats.

United Nation General Assembly Elects President of 79th Session of General Assembly

  • The United Nation General Assembly elected Philemon Yang of Cameroon as President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
  • Dennis Francis of Trinidad and Tobago is the President of 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Inder Pal Singh Bindra appointed as CCI Secretary

  • Competition Commission of India (CCI) has appointed Inder Pal Singh Bindra, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer as the new Secretary.
  • He will replace Anupama Anand, who has resigned after being appointed in September 2023 for a period of 3 years.

Neerabh Kumar Prasad is new Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh

  • Neerabh Kumar Prasad, a 1988 batch AP cadre IAS officer, has assumed charge as Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Government by replacing KS Jawahar Reddy.

Vellayan Subbiah, chairman of Cholamandalam Investment & Finance Co, wins EY World Entrepreneur of the Year award

  • Vellayan Subbiah, executive vice-chairman of Tube Investments of India and chairman of Cholamandalam Investment & Finance Co, has won the EY World Entrepreneur of The Year 2024 title.
  • This award, held at Monaco’s Salle des Etoiles, recognizes Subbiah’s outstanding contributions to entrepreneurship and marks the fourth time an Indian entrepreneur has won this prestigious title.
  • Previously Uday Kotak in 2014, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw in 2020, Narayana Murthy in 2003 have also won the award.

Eenadu Group Chairman Cherukuri Ramoji Rao passes away at 87

  • Eenadu Group Chairman Cherukuri Ramoji Rao passed away at the age of 87.
  • He was head of the Ramoji Group which owns the world’s largest film production facility Ramoji Film City, Eenadu newspaper, ETV Network of TV channels, film production company Usha Kiran Movies.
  • In 2016 he was awarded with Padma Vibhushan.

Magnus Carlsen and Ju Wenjun clinch men's and women's titles at Norway Chess Championship

  • Magnus Carlsen emerged victorious in the Open category of the 2024 Norway Chess, as he defeated Fabiano Caruana in the final round.
  • This was his 6th Norway Chess title.
  • R Praggnanandhaa finished third after defeating Hikaru Nakamura in his final game.
  • In the women’s event Ju Wenjun came out victorious in the inaugural edition.
  • Vaishali Rameshbabu and Koneru Humpy finished 4th and 5th respectively due to defeats in their final round of matches.

Sift Kaur Samra Bags Bronze Medal in Women’s 50m Rifle 3-Position In ISSF Rifle Pistol World Cup

  • Sift Kaur Samra won a bronze medal in Women’s 50m rifle category at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol held in Munich, Germany.
  • With a total of four gold, four silver and three bronze medals, China sat on top of the medal table, followed by Norway, France, India, Britain, Serbia and Turkey with one gold each.

India’s Antim Panghal Clinches Silver Medal at Budapest Ranking Series 2024 In Hungary

  • In wrestling, Antim Panghal grabbed a silver medal in women’s 53 Kg category and while Vinesh Phogat grabbed a silver medal in women’s 50 Kg category at the Budapest Ranking Series 2024 held in Hungary

  • World Brain Tumour Day is annually observed on June 8.
