Ministry of Minority Affairs gave approval for various projects

  • The Ministry of Minority Affairs has taken a significant stride in digital infrastructure development in NIT Jalandhar by allocating ₹21.01 Crore for the Development of ‘5G and beyond and Cyber Security Lab’ and has also taken a significant stride in infrastructure development in Nagaland by allocating ₹172.108 Crore for the Development of ‘Multidisciplinary Sports Complex’ and ‘Women Entrepreneurship Facilitation Centres’.
  • Also taken a significant stride in infrastructure development in the North Eastern Himalayan University (NEHU) by allocating ₹92.34 Crore for the ‘construction of 4 hostels and one auditorium’ and has also taken a significant stride in infrastructure development in Uttarakhand by allocating ₹101.27 Crore for the development of Educational Infrastructure for at different institutes that would cater to approx. 1,05,818 Lakh population out of which more than 25% belongs to the minority communities.
  • And has taken a significant stride in infrastructure development in Karnataka by allocating ₹127.23 Crore for the development of Educational Infrastructure in 12 institutes that would cater to 4200 students out of which 3150 belong to minority population.

Election Commission Announces Para Archer & Arjuna Awardee Sheetal Devi as National PwD Icon

  • Election Commission has announced Para Archer and Arjuna Awardee (2023), Sheetal Devi as its National PwD Icon.
  • Her name was announced at an Exhibition Cricket Match between the Indian Deaf Cricket Association Team and the Delhi and District Cricket Association team held in Delhi.
  • The match was organised by the Election Commission in association with the Board of Control for Cricket in India to foster voter education and inclusivity.

Centre to purchase 1,650 tonnes of onions for exports to Bangladesh

  • National Cooperative Export Ltd (NCEL), the government’s export agency, has announced plans to purchase 1,650 tonnes of onions from private traders at ₹29/kg for export to Bangladesh.
  • This move marks the first official export of onions from India in over three months, following the government’s ban on exports from December 8 to March 31.
  • Between April 1, 2023, and August 4, 2023, a total of 975,000 tonnes of onions were exported from India, with Bangladesh, Malaysia, and the UAE emerging as the top importing countries in terms of value.

Arjun Munda virtually lays foundation stone to establish a 'Centre for Preservation and promotion of Tribal Culture & Heritage' at Padampur, Kharsawan district, Jharkhand

  • Union Minister for Tribal Affairs; Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Arjun Munda, virtually laid the foundation stone of ‘Centre for Preservation and promotion of Tribal Culture & Heritage’ at Padampur, Kharsawan district, Jharkhand.
  • The museum is an effort to depict and preserve the rich legacy of the tribal community in the State of Jharkhand, while showcasing the rich tribal way of life and culture.
  • Union Ministry for Tribal Affairs has approved this initiative by allocating a budget of ₹10 crores for the establishment of this Centre in Kharsawan district of Jharkhand.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Inaugurates 'Krishak Unnati Yojana'

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai launched ‘Krishak Unnati Yojna’ to provide input assistance to farmers and released ₹13,320 crores to 72 lakh cultivators.
  • The scheme was launched at a function at Saryu Prasad Agrawal stadium in Balod district.

Prime Minister Distributes 1,000 Drones to Women’s Self-Help Groups In Villages

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had distributed 1,000 drones to women’s self-help groups in villages under the Namo Drone Didi Yojana.
  • The initiative was launched by Modi on November 30 2023 after his interaction with women beneficiaries of the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra.
  • It aims to provide drones to 15,000 women Self Help Groups (SHGs) in the next two years to be rented out to farmers for agricultural purposes.
  • The women beneficiaries are trained to become drone pilots under the initiative.
  • The scheme will cover 15,000 women SHGs, to be identified from among 89 lakh SHGs formed under the Centre’s Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana, and will provide them a sustainable business model and livelihood support.
  • The Centre will provide each SHG identified a subsidy up to 80 per cent towards the cost of a drone or a maximum of ₹8 lakh.
  • It is expected to generate an additional income of about ₹1 lakh per head for them.
  • A drone cost around ₹10 lakh, and after 80 per cent financial support from the Centre SHGs can seek a loan for the balance 20 per cent from banks at subsidised interest rates to buy drones and deploy them with the help of trained women drone pilots.
  • Under the scheme, representatives of women SHGs will be provided 15 days of training 5 days training for operating a drone and the rest for nutrient and pesticide application.
  • After the training, the representatives will become qualified Namo Drone Didis.

Banking and Finance

Insurance sector attracted ₹54,000 crore FDI in last 9 years

  • Financial Services Secretary Vivek Joshi announced that The insurance sector has received close to ₹54,000 crores as foreign direct investment (FDI) in the last 9 years on the back of further liberalisation of overseas capital flow norms by the government.
  • The government increased the permissible FDI limit from 26 per cent in 2014 to 49 per cent in 2015 and then to 74 per cent in 2021.
  • The permissible FDI limit for insurance intermediaries was increased to 100 per cent in 2019.
  • As a result, ₹53,900 crore of FDI was received in insurance companies between December 2014 and January 2024.
  • During the period, Joshi said, the number of insurance players increased from 53 to 70 as of January 2024.
  • Insurance penetration increased from 9 per cent in 2013-14 to 4 per cent in 2022-23 while insurance density rose from USD 52 in 2013-14 to USD 92 in 2022-23.

A new flowering plant found in Arunachal Pradesh

  • A new colourful flowering plant species, ‘Begonia Narahari’, with a distinctive feature of displaying a vivid blue iridescence in direct light, was discovered in Mishmi Hills of Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit district by scientists.
  • The plant has been named after a scientist from Hyderabad, Narahari Sastry, who also happens to be a former CSIR-Director of North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat (Assam).
  • This new species was found to be growing on hill slopes composed of sandstone, covered by different species of mosses and ferns, together by University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM)’s assistant professor Nazir Ahmad Bhat and research scholar Bipankar Hajong under the supervision of senior scientist Pankaj Bharali – both from CSIR-NEIST.

  • The Hon’ble Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Tamilisai Soundararajan has tendered her resignation with immediate effect.

P&G India appoints Kumar Venkatasubramanian as CEO

  • Kumar Venkatasubramanian will be the new chief executive officer (CEO) of Procter & Gamble India beginning May 1, as the incumbent LV Vaidyanathan has decided to move on after 28 years at the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) giant.

Sangita Kalanidhi award for T.M. Krishna, Nritya Kalanidhi for Neena Prasad

  • Noted carnatic vocalist and Magsaysay award winner M. Krishna has been selected for the Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy for 2024.
  • The Sangita Kala Acharya awards will be presented to mridhangam player Parasala Ravi (V. Raveendran Nair) and vocalist Geetha Raja.
  • TTK Awards will go to Thiruvaiyyaru Brothers S. Narasimhan and S. Venkatesan, who are from a musical lineage that stretches back to Tyagaraja.
  • Another artiste who will get the award is violinist K. Narasimhamurthy.
  • The Musicologist Award will be given to Margaret Bastin.
  • This year’s Nritya Kalanidhi award will be presented to Neena Prasad.
  • The Sangita Kalanidhi awardee will preside over the academic sessions of the 98th Annual Conference and Concerts of The Music Academy to be held between December 15, 2024 and January 1, 2025, and will receive the award, together with those selected for the Sangita Kala Acharya, the TTK and the Musicologist awards at the Sadas on January 1, 2025.

Lama Lobzang Passes Away

  • Former member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and Prominent Buddhist Monk of Ladakh popularly known as Lama Lobzang passes away at 94.
  • He has served the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for 19 years since
  • When the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes became constitutional through an amendment of Article 338 of the constitution, Lama Lobzang was appointed anew as its member for two terms from 1995 to 1998 and 1998 to 2001.
  • Lama Lobzang retired from public office after serving another term as a member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes from 2004 to 2007.

  • 45 personnel each from the GORKHA RIFLES of the Indian Army and Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) will participate in the exercise.
  • The aim of the Exercise is to enhance interoperability in Sub-conventional Operations in Semi-Urban environment under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter on Peace Keeping Operations.
  • The Exercise will enhance cooperation and interoperability between both the sides during Peace Keeping Operations.
  • The exercise will also build and promote bilateral military relations in addition to exchanging skills, experiences and good practices between both armies.
