GRID-INDIA is now a Miniratna Company

  • Grid Controller of India Limited (GRID-INDIA) achieved a significant milestone by being conferred with the status of Miniratna Category-I Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE).
  • This recognition, bestowed upon by the Ministry of Power, underscores GRID-INDIA’s pivotal role in the nation’s power landscape.
  • Established in 2009, GRID-INDIA holds the crucial mandate of overseeing the seamless and uninterrupted operation of the Indian Power System, ensuring the efficient transfer of electric power within and across regions, facilitating trans-national power exchanges with a focus on reliability, economy, and sustainability.
  • It facilitates competitive and efficient wholesale electricity markets and administer settlement systems.

States got ₹95,000 crores under special assistance for Capital Investment

  • State governments have received over ₹95,000 crore during April-February as special assistance to states for Capital Investment.
  • It also said some mandatory conditions have been brought in for Fiscal Year 2024-25.
  • The revised estimate for such assistance is ₹1.05 lakh crore for the current fiscal while initially it was pegged at ₹1.30 lakh crore.
  • The scheme was launched for the first time in fiscal year 2020-21 under which 50-year interest free loan is provided.
  • For current Fiscal Year 2023-24, the Budget Estimate for the scheme was ₹1.30 lakh crore which was later revised to ₹1.05 crore.

Banking and Finance

GDP Growth Predicted by RBI for FY25

  • RBI’s economic research team has projected the economy to grow at a relatively faster clip of 4 per cent in FY25 versus 7 per cent projected in Governor Shaktikanta Das’ latest bi-monthly monetary policy statement.
  • The team also sees FY25 CPI (consumer price index) based inflation a tad lower at 4 per cent against 4.5 per cent projected in the statement.

Indian Council of Agricultural Research signed MoU with Dhanuka Agritech Limited

  • The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Dhanuka Agritech Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
  • Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), ICAR Dr. U.S. Gautam and Chairman, Dhanuka Agritech Limited Dr. R.G. Aggarwal signed this MoU on behalf of respective organizations.
  • The objective of this agreement is to utilize the efficiency of both the institutions to deliver new technology to the farmers.

CAG signs MoU with IIT Delhi on Artificial Intelligence

  • The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India on signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on Artificial Intelligence.
  • The MoU was signed and exchanged between Additional Deputy CAG A. M. Bajaj and IIT Delhi Director, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, in the presence of CAG Girish Chandra Murmu.
  • The MoU marked a significant milestone in the journey towards leveraging AI and other emerging technologies for the advancement of audit practices, and beyond.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju Gives Additional Charge of Ministry of Food Processing Industries

  • Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has been given an additional charge of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries after Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party Chief Pashupati Kumar Paras resigned from the Union Cabinet.
  • He is currently holding the charge of Ministry of Earth Sciences.

RBI approves re-designation of Manian, Ekambaram of Kotak Mahindra Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the re-designation of K V S Manian and Shanti Ekambaram, Whole-time Directors of Kotak Mahindra Bank, as Joint Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director, respectively.

TVS Motor onboards Sanmar’s Vijay Sankar as independent director

  • TVS Motor Company (TVSM) announced the induction of Sanmar Group Chairman Vijay Sankar and Haribhakti & Associates Chairman Shailesh Haribhakti as new independent directors, subject to shareholder approval.
  • Current Independent director Kuok Meng Xiong will step down.

Ireland Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announces resignation

  • Ireland Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Leo Varadkar will step down from office within weeks as soon as his center-right party chooses a successor.

Wipro appoints Anne-Marie Rowland as CEO of Capco

  • IT major Wipro has appointed Anne-Marie Rowland as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Capco, the London-headquartered consulting firm it had acquired for $1.45 billion in 2021.
  • Rowland is currently Managing Partner of Capco’s business in the UK and Ireland and a member of Capco’s global leadership team.
  • She will take on the CEO’s role effective April 1, 2024.

Finland tops 2024 World Happiness Report again

  • The 2024 World Happiness Report has been released, with Finland as the happiest country for the seventh consecutive year.
  • Denmark and Iceland retain their positions at second and third place, respectively, with Sweden following closely at fourth.
  • Notably, Costa Rica and Lithuania have broken into the top 20 list for the first time, securing ranks 12 and 19, respectively.
  • India, on the other hand, ranked 126 out of the 143 countries listed.
  • All of India’s neighbouring countries ranked higher, with China at 60, followed by Nepal at 93, Pakistan (108), Myanmar (118), Sri Lanka (128), and Bangladesh (129).
  • Afghanistan retained its status as the unhappiest country in the world for yet another year followed by Lebanon, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, and Congo.
  • The annual report evaluates happiness levels across more than 140 nations, considering factors such as social support, income, health, freedom, generosity, and the absence of corruption.
  • Data is sourced from various outlets, including the Gallup World Poll, and the report is published annually in celebration of the International Day of Happiness.
  • Collaborators include the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Gallup, and the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre.

Kapildev Prasad Passed Away

  • Padma Shri awardee weaver Kapil Dev Prasad of Nalanda passed away at 71.
  • In the year 2023, the President awarded him the Padma Shri.
  • Kapil Dev Prasad was associated with the handloom sector for the last six decades.
  • She gave recognition to the Bawanbooti saree in the country and the world.

French Language Day 2024

  • French Language Day is annually observed on March 20.
  • The Day was introduced by the United Nations back in 2010 as part of the Language Day celebrations to raise awareness of multilingualism and cultural diversity.

World Oral Health Day 2024

  • World Oral Health Day is annually observed on March 20.
  • The day is celebrated to spread awareness around oral health and its intricate link with your overall health.
  • The Day was first celebrated September 12, 2007, on the birthday of FDI founder Dr Charles Godon and was organised by the World Dental Federation (FDI).
  • However, in 2013, the FDI decided to move the date to March 20 in order to avoid conflict with other events and to align with the international calendar.

World Forestry Day 2024

  • World Forestry Day is annually observed on March 21.
  • The day highlights the crucial role of forests in our lives.
  • The idea of World Forestry Day was proposed in 1971 by the General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture.
  • March 21 was chosen by the United Nations as it aligns with the Vernal Equinox and Autumn Equinox in the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively.

World Poetry Day 2024

  • World Poetry Day is annually observed on March 21.
  • The day aims to honour poets and bring back the practice of poetry readings.

  • Earlier, many countries marked the day in October.
  • Even after the UNESCO declaration in 1999, some countries still celebrate Poetry Day on October 15, on the birthday of the Roman poet Virgil – famous for his epic poem Aeneid.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2024

  • International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is annually observed on March 21.
  • The UN General Assembly resolution 2142 (XXI), adopted on October 26 1966, proclaimed 21 March as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to be commemorated annually.
  • Theme – “A Decade of Recognition, Justice, and Development: Implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent”.
  • This year’s theme is linked to the International Decade for People of African Descent, which spans the timeframe from 2015 to 2024.

Indian Army raises specialised technology unit ‘STEAG’ for future warfare

  • Indian Army has raised “Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group” (STEAG), a first of its kind specialised technology unit, for undertaking research and evaluation of the next generation communication technologies like Artificial Intelligence, 5G and 6G networks, machine learning, and quantum technologies for defence applications.
  • The move is in sync with realisation in the Indian armed forces to equip themselves with next generation fighting capabilities.
  • The Army last year decided to operationalise command cyber operations and support wings (CCOSW), for cyberwarfare.
