National News

Largest International Delegation Observes India’s General Election

  • India’s General Elections have attracted global attention once again as the Election Commission of India (ECI) hosts its International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP), welcoming 75 delegates from 23 countries.
  • The inauguration ceremony held in New Delhi saw the presence of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with ECs Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu.
  • This year’s delegation, the largest ever, comprises representatives from 23 countries, including Bhutan, Mongolia, Australia, Madagascar, Fiji, and others.
  • The participation of organizations like the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and media teams from Bhutan and Israel adds further depth to the event.

People with disabilities to get quotas in all trains irrespective of fare concessions

  • The Ministry of Railways has approved quotas for people with disabilities (PwDs) in all trains, irrespective of whether any concessional fare facility is available or not.
  • The PwD quota will be earmarked in all reserved Express/Mail trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Humsafar, Gatimaan, and Vande Bharat express
  • According to the revised norms, the quota will be: four berths in Sleeper Class (two lower and two middle), four berths in Three Tier AC, 3E or 3A, (two lower and two middle), four berths in the Specially Designed Second Class Luggage cum Guard (SLRD) coaches of Garib Rath trains, four seats in reserved Second Class sitting and AC Chair Car in those trains which have more than two coaches of these classes, and four seats in Vande Bharat trains.

Andhra Pradesh completes disbursal of ₹1,945 crore welfare pensions

  • Andhra Pradesh government has completed the disbursal of monthly welfare pensions to the tune of ₹1,945 crore.
  • The Government has released ₹1,945.39 crore for disbursement of social security pensions to 65,49,864 pensioners in the State.
  • Disbursal of 74,399 pensions have been added to door-to-door pension disbursal mode taking the total number in this mode to 7,31,760 as they could not be delivered through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
  • Through DBT, 48,17,718 pensions have been disbursed out of 48,18,104 pensions.

REC gets RBI nod to set up subsidiary in GIFT City, Gujarat

  • REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power and a leading NBFC, has received a ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the Reserve Bank of India, for setting up a wholly owned subsidiary in International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (“GIFT”), Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • The proposed subsidiary will engage in a range of financial activities as a finance company within GIFT, including lending, investment, and other financial services.

India, Ghana Agree to Operationalise UPI Link Within 6 Months

  • India and Ghana have agreed to operationalise Unified Payment Interface (UPI) with Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems within six months in order to enable instant fund transfers for users in both countries.
  • Both countries also discussed the possibilities of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Local Currency Settlement System (LCCS) in trade, digital transformation solutions, and on the opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.
  • The linking of Indian and Ghanaian instant payment systems will be the latest in India’s expansion of UPI operations, which are already available in countries such as France, UAE, Sri Lanka and Mauritius.
  • The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a free trade area encompassing most of Africa.
  • It was established in 2018 by the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, which has 43 parties and another 11 signatories, making it the largest free-trade area by number of member states, after the World Trade Organization, and the largest in population and geographic size, spanning 3 billion people across the world’s second largest continent.

India auctioned ₹20,000 crore worth sovereign green bonds in FY24

  • The government auctioned sovereign green bonds worth ₹20,000 crore in FY24, compared to ₹16,000 crore in FY23 to mobilise resources for green infrastructure projects, particularly for expanding renewable energy capacity.
  • Besides, foreign direct investment (FDI) flows towards non-conventional energy surpassed $2 billion for the second consecutive year.
  • All the sovereign green bonds (SGrB) in FY24 were oversubscribed.
  • The SGrB offerings were 5-year (New SGrB 2028), 10-year (New SGrB 2033) and 30-year (New SGrB 2054 and 7.37 per cent SGrB 2054).
  • Apart from the 37 per cent SGrB 2054, all other offerings’ coupon rates were yield-based which after auctions came out to be 7.25 per cent, 7.24 per cent and 7.37 per cent, respectively.
  • Sovereign Green Bonds (SGrBs) are a type of government bond specifically earmarked to finance environmentally sustainable projects.
  • Unlike traditional government bonds, where the funds raised may be allocated to general expenses or initiatives, SGrBs are exclusively dedicated to green causes.

RBI data: Home loan outstanding up by ₹10 lakh crores in last 2 yrs; reaches ₹27 lakh crores in March

  • According to RBI’s data on ‘Sectoral Deployment of Bank Credit, Credit outstanding to the housing sector rose by nearly ₹10 lakh crore in the last two fiscals to reach a record ₹27.23 lakh crore in March 2024.
  • The credit outstanding to the housing (including priority sector housing’) stood at ₹27,22,720 crore in March 2024, up from ₹19,88,532 crore in March 2023, and ₹17,26,697 crore in March 2022.
  • The data also showed that the credit outstanding towards commercial real estate stood at ₹4,48,145 crore in March 2024.
  • It was at ₹2,97,231 crore in March 2022.

India-dedicated funds see $24 billion of inflows in FY24

  • According to the latest EPFR data compiled by Kotak Institutional Equities, India-dedicated funds saw inflows of $2.3 billion in March, taking the total category inflows in FY24 to $23.8 billion.
  • These funds saw inflows of $16.2 billion in CY23.
  • They also saw outflows of $2.2 billion, $3.8 billion and $8.8 billion in the previous three calendar years.

Science and Technology

IIT-M start-up Mindgrove Technologies launches first indigenously designed microcontroller chip

  • IIT Madras-incubated startup Mindgrove Technologies has launched Secure IoT, the first indigenous microcontroller chip, which is 30% cheaper than other chips in the segment, and can efficiently power various electronic devices, from wearables to smart city infrastructure.
  • It has also completed basic testing of the chip.
  • A system-on-chip goes into the printed circuit board (PCB) and is like the brain of the device.
  • Secure IOT is now being pitched to electronics manufacturers, ODMs (original design manufacturers who design for brands) and other mid-market customers in India and abroad.
  • The RISC-V architecture-based chip claims to deliver high-performance clocked at 700 MHz.
  • The start-up did not divulge the pricing details but said it is estimated to cost 30 per cent less than other chips in similar segment.

Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor takes over as AOC-in-C training command

  • Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor assumed the appointment of Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) Training Command (TC) on 01 May 2024.
  • Air Marshal N Kapoor was commissioned into the Fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on 06 December 1986.
  • He was awarded with Vayu Sena Medal in 2008 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022.

UNICEF India appoints Kareena Kapoor Khan as National Ambassador

  • In its 75th year of partnership with India, UNICEF India announced the appointment of one of the most iconic stars of Indian Cinema, Kareena Kapoor Khan as the organization’s National Ambassador.
  • In her role, Kareena Kapoor Khan will support UNICEF India in furthering every child’s right to early childhood development, health, education and gender equality.

RBI approves appointment of Sanjeev Nautiyal as MD & CEO of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India approved the appointment of Sanjeev Nautiyal as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank.
  • He will replace Ittira Davis.
  • He retired as the former Deputy MD of the State Bank of India (SBI), has been designated for a period of three years.
  • Currently, he is the independent director of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), in addition to acting as an advisor to various organisations.

Mallika Nadda appointed chairperson of Special Olympics Asia Pacific Advisory Council

  • Mallika Nadda, President of Special Olympics Bharat, has been appointed as Chairperson of the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Advisory Council (APAC), for three years.
  • She is wife of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President JP Nadda, has been serving as the Chairperson of Special Olympics Bharat since 2021.

Subhransu Sekhar Acharya assumes charge as CMD of National Small Industries Corporation

  • Former Chief General Manager of Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) Subhransu Sekhar Acharya has taken over the charge of Chairman- cum- Managing Director (CMD) of The National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) under the Ministry of MSME.

‘Titanic’, ‘Lord of the Rings’ actor Bernard Hill passes away

  • British actor Bernard Hill, known for his roles in James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, passed away at 79.
  • He had played the role of Captain Edward Smith in Titanic and of King Théoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Indigenous bomber unmanned aircraft developed by Bengaluru firm unveiled

  • Flying Wedge Defence, a city-based defence and aerospace technology firm unveiled the FWD-200B unmanned aircraft.
  • It is India’s first indigenous bomber unmanned aircraft.
  • The FWD-200B has a payload capacity of 100 kgs and is classified as a MALE Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (medium-altitude, long-endurance).
  • The Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) consists of optical surveillance payloads and is integrated with missile-like weapons for precision air strikes.
  • With a max speed of 200 kts/370 kmph, it has an endurance capacity of 12-20 hours.
  • The FWD-200B can carry a maximum take-off weight of 498 Kgs in addition to this, it holds a ground control station (GCS) range of 200 kms.
