NITI Aayog Released Compendium on Best Practices in Social Sector 2023

  • NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Shri Suman Bery released the “Best Practices in Social Sector: A Compendium, 2023” in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.
  • To commemorate 75 years of India’s independence and highlight and laud the efforts of Union Ministries and State Governments, this compendium includes 75 case studies cutting across 14 key social sectors.
  • The case studies have been sourced from all States/ Union Territories and 30 Ministries and Departments of the Government of India.
  • The seventy-five best practices highlight models which are innovative, sustainable, replicable and impactful.
  • The aim of this exercise has been to synthesise lessons for the future to expand, enhance and improve life at the grassroots level.
  • Due care was taken to ensure that the cases identified are spread over diverse themes, including education, health and nutrition, e-governance and digitization, agriculture, women’s empowerment, sports, and financial inclusion, among others.

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy inaugurated PM Jan Aushadhi Kendra at Warasiguda in Secunderabad

  • Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy has inaugurated a PM Jan Aushadhi Kendra at Warasiguda in Secunderabad.
  • These Jan Aushadhi Kendras provide affordable healthcare and generate self-employment opportunities for youth.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi scheme has been launched to make quality generic medicines available to the common man at low cost.
  • The medicines are available at 50-90 percent lower prices in Janausadhi Kendras than the rates found in regular medical shops.

Uttar Pradesh Became First State to Make Digital Health Cards For Children

  • The Urban Development Department and Lucknow Smart City launched “School Health Program”.
  • Under the pilot project, the School Health Program has been started by Lucknow Smart City in three schools.
  • A digital health report card for the overall physical and mental well-being of 1765 municipal school students is also being prepared under the project.
  • Along with this, the benefit of health insurance worth Rs 25,000 is also being given to these children.
  • The program is likely to be implemented in the state’s other 9 smart cities also after the successful completion of the pilot project.

SLCM Group disbursed ₹84.8 cr to 19,000 women beneficiaries

  • SLCM (Sohan Lal Commodity Management) Group has disbursed more than ₹84.8 crore to over 19,000 women beneficiaries till 2022-23 through Kissandhan’s Business Correspondent (BC) Partnership Lending Programme.
  • The company has on-boarded about 10,000 women beneficiaries in the last five months, which is not only a substantial increase in the programme’s reach, but also indicates the growing scope for women farmers to improve their social and economic stability.

SCR will set up Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal at Gadchendur Station

  • The Secunderabad Division of South Central Railway (SCR) is setting up a new Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) at Gadchendur Station.
  • The GCT will be constructed entirely on Railway land and the tender has been awarded for the same at the cost of ₹15.2 crore to Dalmia Cement Bharat Ltd.
  • The Gati-Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal policy has been introduced by Indian Railways with a view to boost investment from industry in development of additional terminals for handling Rail cargos.
  •  These terminals will ease the handling of freight commodities for transportation by Rail with enhanced facilities duly providing safe and secure transportation.
  • Under this policy, apart from new sidings, the under-construction and existing private sidings/terminals can also migrate to convert as Gati-Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal.

ITC Foods introduced its first millet cookies

  • ITC Foods has launched its first millet cookies as part of Sunfeast Farmlite.
  • Earlier this year, ITC had introduced a dedicated initiative ‘ITC Mission Millet’ powered by a strategic three-pillar model that encompasses the development of a ‘good-for-you’ product portfolio, implementation of sustainable farming systems, and enhancing consumer awareness of the benefit of millets.
  • The cookies, which will be made available in two variants, including multi-millet and choco-chip multi-millet, are made from a blend of millets, including ragi, jowar (sorghum), and contains no added maida.

ISRO to start online training programme for PG and and final-year UG students

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced a new introductory-level online training programme called Space Science and Technology Awareness Training (START).
  • START is aimed at postgraduate and final-year undergraduate students of Physical Sciences and Technology.
  • Academic institutions can submit applications for the programme through the Jigyasa portal by May 20.
  • The programme will cover various domains of Space Science, including Astronomy and Astrophysics, Heliophysics and Sun-Earth interaction, Instrumentation, and Aeronomy.
  • It will be delivered by scientists from Indian academia and ISRO centres.
  • The training will also emphasise the cross-disciplinary nature of Space Science, giving students insights into how the individual aptitudes can be applied to the field.
  • The programme is expected to help build a human capacity that will lead Space Science and research in the future.
  • The lectures will also cover topics on the Indian Space Science exploration programme and research opportunities in Space Science and technologies.

MakeMyTrip collaborated with Microsoft for voice-assisted booking in Indian languages

  • Travel portal MakeMyTrip has collaborated with Microsoft to use Generative AI to make travel planning accessible by introducing voice-assisted booking in Indian languages.
  • The new, in-platform tech stack powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and Azure Cognitive Services, will converse with the user to offer personalised travel recommendations based on their preferences, curate holiday packages based on variable inputs like occasion, budget, activity preferences, time of travel, among others, and even help book these holiday packages.

Essar Oil & Gas invested in microbial eCBM technology to boost output

  • Essar Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Ltd (EOGEPL) announced an investment in microbial eCBM technology to boost coal-bed methane (CBM) production from its CBM block in West Bengal.
  • The company, which has so far invested Rs 5,000 crore in finding and producing gas from coal seams, called CBM, plans to invest an additional Rs 2,000 crore to enhance its reserve base and ramp up CBM production to contribute at least 5 per cent to India’s total gas production.

Raksha Mantri approved posting of Women Officers of the Territorial Army along the Line of Control

  • Ministry of Defence, Department of Military Affairs, has approved amendment to existing cadre management provisions for Women Officers of the Territorial Army (TA).
  • Territorial Army had commenced Commissioning of Women Officers in TA since 2019.
  • Thus far these Woman Officers were able to serve Ecological Task Force Units, TA Oil sector units and TA Railway Engineer Regiment.
  • The Territorial Army is based on a Citizen Soldiers’ army concept and officers undergo Annual Training on basic military skills while remaining gainfully employed in civilian life.

  • Logitech, announced the appointment of Anand Lakshmanan as head of Logitech India.
  • Lakshmanan who has been a part of the company for over two years, will now take the role of overseeing Logitech’s complete portfolio in the Indian market, encompassing B2C and B2B businesses..

BRO celebrated 64th Raising Day

  • Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated its 64th Raising Day on May 07, 2023 at all its detachments across the country.
  • The main function ‘Chief Engineers and Equipment Management Conference’ was organised at BRO School & Centre in Pune, which was graced by Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Ajay Bhatt.
  • Raksha Rajya Mantri inaugurated the BRO Technical Training Complex and an Automated Driving Track at the premises.
  • These facilities will enhance the training standards of the BRO personnel and help them to be better prepared for various challenges.
  • BRO-centric software, developed as part of ‘Digital India’ initiative, were also launched on the occasion.
  • These software Recruitment Management System, Electronic Measurement Book & Work Management System have been developed to automate various aspects of functioning of the BRO for smoother & faster output and increased transparency.
  • In addition, an MoU was signed between the BRO and GRSE for construction of indigenous Class 70R Double Lane Modular Bridges.
  • These bridges will help in bolstering the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces.

World Red Cross

  • World Red Cross Day or Red Crescent Day is celebrated on 8 May every year.
  • This date is the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, who was born on 8 May 1828 at Geneva, Switzerland and Died on 30 October 1910 at Heiden, Switzerland.
  • He was the founder of (ICRC) International Committee of the Red Cross and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
  • First Red Cross Day was celebrated on 8 May 1948.
  • The official title of the day changed over time, and became “World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day” in 1984.

World Thalassaemia Day

  • World Thalassemia Day is annually celebrated on May 8.
  • Thalassaemia is a inherited disorder where the oxygen-carrying proteins in the blood also known as haemoglobin and red blood cells are lesser than normal.
  • Panos Englezos, President and Founder of Thalassemia International Federation created this day in 1994 in the memory of his son George and other Thalassemia patients who fought the disease bravely.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated 1st-of-its-kind Indian Air Force Heritage Centre at Chandigarh

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the first-of-its-kind Indian Air Force (IAF) Heritage Centre at Chandigarh.
  • It was set up under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Union Territory of Chandigarh and the IAF which was signed in 2022.
  • Spread over 17,000 square feet, this is the first heritage centre of the IAF and depicts its role in 1965, 1971 and the Kargil wars and the Balakot air strike through murals and scale models.
  • The heritage centre has several attractions such as aircraft models, aero engines and weapons, including Gryazev-Shipunov twin-barrelled guns.
  • It showcases augmented reality, hologram, virtual reality, and electro-mechanical enclosures, interactive kiosks highlighting various facets of the IAF.
  • There are also flying simulators at the centre which will give flight experience to visitors.
  • The attractions of the heritage centre also include five vintage aircraft and SAM-III Pechora missiles.
  • A Hindustan Piston Trainer-32 primary flying trainer aircraft has been on display at the centre.
  • Its period of operation in the Indian Air Force was from 1977 to 2009.
  • A MiG 21 single-seat fighter has also been positioned.
  • The centre also has a special segment which has been dedicated to women officers in the IAF for their contributions.
  • It depicts IAF war campaigns starting with the role in the Indo-Pak war of 1948 to electro-mechanical 3D-dioramas depicting its latest operations such as the Balakot air strike.
  • An audio-visual gallery will present the journey of the IAF through time, tracing its evolution from its inception to the modern day as well as promotional movies.
  • There is a section where uniforms of the IAF will be shown, besides an enclosure for its ranks and badges.
  • One section of the walls also displays several rescue operations of the IAF.
  • The centre also houses a souvenir shop and a theme based cafe.

Air force received first batch of indigenous VTOL loitering munition

  • The air force has received its first indigenously designed and developed loitering munitions.
  • These are capable of operating from all kinds of terrain and high altitude areas and can take down targets at a range of over 50 km, without exposing any personnel to risk.
  • Developed by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), the autonomous system is designed for Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) and has successfully demonstrated its capability to carry out precision strikes during trials and tests.
  • Named the ALS 50, the munition – also known as a suicide drone – has been developed by a team of young engineers at TASL and can be scaled up to increase firepower as well as targeting distance.
  • The system has been operated in high altitude areas during trials in Ladakh last year and in hot conditions in Rajasthan as well.
