National News

ICMR Releases Upgraded ‘Dietary Guidelines’ For Indians

  • The Indian Council of Medical Research-ICMR has released an upgraded ‘Dietary Guidelines for Indians to suit the modern eating habits of 2024.
  • Framed by researchers from the Hyderabad-based National Institute of Nutrition-NIN, the modern dietary guidelines specifically advise people to be physically active, exercise regularly, restrict intake of salt, minimize high fat, sugar and ultra-processed foods and take steps to prevent abdominal obesity, overweight and overall obesity.
  • The NIN in the report has framed 17 dietary guidelines that emphasize on health promotion and disease prevention across all age groups with special attention on healthy diets.
  • According to the guidelines, individuals from all age groups must pursue a minimum of at least 30 to 45 minutes of physical activity of moderate intensity for good health.
  • Regular physical activity of at least 60 minutes per day among children can prevent overweight and obesity.
  • The ICMR-NIN has advised people to consume iodized salt, restrict intake of added salt to a maximum of 5 gm per day and has urged people to develop a taste for food-diets that are low in salt from an early age.

  • In Nagaland, ambassador of Japan to India, Hiroshi Suzuki and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio jointly inaugurated the Kohima Peace Memorial and laid the foundation stone of Eco Park Kohima.
  • The Kohima Peace Memorial and Eco Park holds particular significance as it celebrates the collaborative effort between the Government of Japan and Japanese International Corporation Agency with the Government of Nagaland.

Paytm Payments Bank transfers bill payment operations to Euronet Services

  • Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) has transferred its bill payment operations to Euronet Services India after it recently shifted its retail point of sales operations to RBL Bank and the settlement of merchant payments to Axis Bank.
  • Euronet, an American payment technology company, manages backend settlement systems for various digital payment methods in India.

  • Bharat Billpay, a subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India, facilitates the backend infrastructure for most bill payments in India.

RBI allows Bank of Baroda to resume on boarding via ‘Bob World’ mobile app

  • Reserve Bank of India lifted the restrictions on Bank of Baroda, allowing the bank to resume on boarding new customers through its ‘Bob World’ mobile application.
  • The central bank had in in October 2023 directed the public sector lender to suspend any further on boarding of customers onto its ‘Bob World’ mobile application, based on certain supervisory concerns observed in the bank’s mobile banking on boarding processes.

World Bank: Annual investments of $260 billion required to halve agrifood emissions by 2030, achieve Net Zero by 2050

  • According to a new World Bank report “Recipe for a Livable Planet: Achieving Net Zero Emissions in the Agrifood System”, Replacing a quarter of India’s 8.8 million diesel irrigation pumps with solar pumps would cut agrifood emissions by 5 million tonnes per year.
  • This is more than double the five million tonnes of global emissions that electric vehicles and solar panels prevented in 2020.
  • The world’s agrifood system emits about 16 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases (GHG) per year — about a third of all global emissions — and is projected to keep growing.
  • The report, outlined actions that every country can take to make food supplies more secure, help the food system better withstand climate change and protect vulnerable people during this transition.
  • These actions include the investments required to halve agrifood emissions to reach Net Zero goals.
  • In India, 60 per cent of emissions from agrifood systems come from the farm gate, with enteric fermentation accounting for the largest proportion, primarily due to the inefficiency of the livestock sector.
  • In fact, the report indicates that 80 per cent of the mitigation potential for agriculture in India could be achieved by adopting cost-saving measures alone.
  • The top ten agrifood system emitters are China, Brazil, India, United States, Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Russian Federation, Canada, Pakistan and Argentina.
  • Of these, two (Canada and US) are high-income countries (HIC), one (Democratic Republic of Congo) is low-income country (LIC) and the rest are middle-income countries.

  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Jindal Steel & Power (JSP) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi aimed at enhancing indigenous content in ship building.
  • This partnership seeks to bolster the supply of indigenous marine-grade steel, vital for the nation’s maritime security.
  • The MoU highlights the pivotal role of public-private partnerships in addressing complex security challenges.
  • It underscores the necessity of collaboration between government agencies and the private sector to strengthen national interests.
  • Outlined within the MoU are several key benefits aimed at ensuring quality, grades, and dimensions of the marine-grade steel.
  • Additionally, designated steel plants have been earmarked for manufacturing the product, ensuring a timely supply to shipbuilding yards serving the ICG.

  • Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan chaired a two-day conference, ‘Parivartan Chintan-2’ on the jointness and integration of the Armed Forces in New Delhi.
  • Parivartan Chintan, a pioneering conference for the heads of all Tri-Services Institutes and aims at generating novel reformative ideas and initiatives.
  • Members from all the subcommittees of the apex Chiefs of Staff Committee; the CDS as its permanent chairman, and the three Service Chiefs, shall review the progress made in multiple domains, and ideate on the necessary reforms to achieve the desired end state towards transformation through jointness and integration.

Pine Labs-owned Setu teams up with Sarvam AI to build LLM for financial services

  • Digital payments major Pine Labs has developed the country’s first large language model (LLM) specifically designed for the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) sector.
  • Named Sesame, the LLM is developed by Pine Labs-owned application programming interface (API) infrastructure company Setu in collaboration with homegrown generative artificial intelligence startup Sarvam AI.
  • The model’s design is both domain and region-specific, having been trained on custom data relevant to India’s BFSI sector.
  • The model leverages financial data available both internally and externally to help enterprise customers improve their credit underwriting process, detect fraud, monitor loan performance and offer personal finance advisory.

India's data centre capacity to double to 2,000 MW by 2026

  • According to the report by CareEdge Ratings, India’s data centre capacity is set to double to reach 2,000 MW by 2026, as the country transitions towards a developed market economy amid a rise in ‘green energy’ solutions
  • The growth plans have also created substantial investment prospects, with a likely capex of ₹50,000 crores in this space over the next three years till 2026.
  • The data centre industry is expected to clock a revenue growth of 32% during FY24-FY26.
  • While India generates about 20% of global data, in terms of data centre capacity, it has a share of just 3 per cent.

India is the third largest producer of solar power in 2023

  • According to the report by international energy analytics agency Ember, in 2023, India overtook Japan to become the world’s third-highest producer of solar power.
  • India generated 113 billion units (BU) of solar power in 2023 compared to Japan’s 110 BU.
  • The global solar generation in 2023 was more than six times larger than in 2015.
  • Solar’s contribution to electricity generation in India increased from 0.5 per cent in 2015 to 5.8 per cent in 2023.
  • In terms of installed power capacity, which includes sources of renewable and non-renewable energy, India at 73 gigawatt (1 GW is one billion watts) ranks fifth in the world while Japan is at third place (83 GW).
  • India saw the world’s fourth-largest increase in solar generation in 2023 (+18 terawatt hour or TWh), behind China (+156 TWh), the United States (+33 TWh) and Brazil (+22 TWh).
  • Together, the top four solar growth countries accounted for 75 per cent of growth in 2023.

Indian courts see rise in women judges between 2018-2023

  • According to the Supreme Court’s ‘State of the Judiciary’ report, the representation of women judges in Indian courts has seen a significant rise, from 27 per cent in 2018 to a promising 34.6 per cent in 2023.
  • In the Supreme Court of India, just 3 of the 32 judges are women (9.4 per cent), as of December 2023.
  • This was however a staggering 4 percent in 2018.
  • In 2018, out of 696 judges in the HCs, women constituted only 10 per cent.
  • However, by 2023, out of 737 total judges in the HCs, the proportion of women judges has risen to 13.4 per cent.

  • According to the 2024 World’s Wealthiest Cities Report, published by Henley & Partners in collaboration with New World Wealth, New York continues its reign as the world’s wealthiest city, boasting a staggering 349,500 millionaires and a total wealth exceeding $3 trillion – more than most G20 countries.
  • The list is followed by The Bay Area tech hub, Tokyo, Singapore, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong, and Beijing on the top 10.
  • Mumbai is the 24th wealthiest city in the world with 58,800 millionaires, 236 centi-millionaires and 29 billionaires.
  • This is a rise of 5% from 2013-2023.
  • Delhi stood at the 37th rank in the list with 30,700 millionaires, 123 centi-millionaires, and 16 billionaires.

Varugeese Koshy passes away

  • International Chess Master Varugeese Koshy passed away at 66.
  • He represented India in several International tournaments, was also the president of Chess Players Forum India which was formed in 2020-21.

Tripura’s First International Cricket Stadium Set To Be Ready By February 2025

  • The Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) is set to inaugurate the state’s first international cricket stadium in Narsingarh, located in the West Tripura district, with a one-day international match or an IPL (Indian Premier League) T20 encounter.
  • The stadium is expected to be operational for hosting major cricket events by February 2025.
  • They aim to have the stadium ready for prestigious cricket matches by January 2025 or mid-February according to the revised schedule.

  • Indian Army’s Kharga Corps, under the aegis of Army’s Western Command, successfully conducted a three-day joint exercise with the Indian Air Force at multiple locations in Punjab.
  • The exercise was conducted to refine processes and validate employment of attack helicopters in support of mechanised operations in developed terrain
  • The Gagan Strike-II exercise, which incorporated Apache and ALH-WSI helicopters, Unarmed Aerial Vehicles and special forces of Indian Army, was aimed at validating various force multipliers in support of ground offensive by strike corps along with live firing by helicopters as demanded by mechanised forces during offensive
  • The exercise enabled formations and units of Western Command to execute joint operations, with seamless integration of all ground and aerial assets to achieve laid down objectives.
