IICA and MCA hold inter-ministerial workshop on ‘Responsible Business Conduct in India’ in New Delhi

  • An Inter-Ministerial Workshop on the ‘Responsible Business Conduct in India” was organised by the School of Business Environment, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) along with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New Delhi.
  • The objective of the workshop was to map the policies of different ministries aligned with responsible business, to share the progress made against the policies and schemes related to responsible business, to deliberate the need for collaborative action, and to seek inputs for documenting initiatives pertaining to responsible business leading towards Viksit Bharat.

ICRA: India's GDP for Q4 of FY24 is 6.7%

TDK Corporation joins hands with IIT Madras innovation centre to launch accelerator program

  • TDK Corporation, a leader in electronic solutions, has tied up with the Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (GDC) at IIT Madras to launch the ‘TIIC Accelerator Program 2024’.
  • The program aims to foster innovation in the Healthcare Technology and Diagnostics sector arising from Indian STEM university researchers and start-ups.
  • Through this collaboration, TDK Corporation aims to harness India’s deep talent pool and creativity to propel breakthroughs in healthcare diagnostics, medical devices, and related areas.
  • The programme will provide targeted support, mentorship, and partnership and investment opportunities to catalyse the growth of promising healthcare technology ventures.
  • The ‘TIIC Accelerator Program 2024’ will combine TDK’s experience in the technology industry with GDC’s experience in commercialisation of research and fostering entrepreneurship.

BARC appoints Dr Bikramjit Chaudhuri as its new chief of measurement science and analytics

  • Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India has announced the appointment of Dr Bikramjit Chaudhuri as its new Chief of Measurement Science and Analytics.
  • He will succeed Dr Derrick Gray, a veteran audience measurement and advanced analytics executive, who has been a member of BARC India for six years.

M&M Finance appoints Mahesh Rajaraman as CRO

  • Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services has appointed Mahesh Rajaraman as Chief Risk Officer (CRO) of the company with effect from August 1, 2024.
  • He would replace Mallika Mittal.

India Climbs 39th Position in World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index.

  • India has climbed to the 39th position in the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024, while US topped the list.
  • India also ranks the highest in South Asia among the lower-middle-income economies.
  • Earlier, India was ranked 54th in 2021 published index.
  • On an overall index score of 7, where 1 is the worst, and 7 the best, India scored 4.25.
  • Spain, Japan, France, and Australia feature are the top four countries in the 2024.
  • India ranking in other index- India demonstrates high price competitiveness (18th), possesses competitive air transport (26th), ground and port (25th) infrastructure.
  • In particular, India’s strong Natural (6th), Cultural (9th) and Non-Leisure (9th) Resources help drive travel, and the country is only one of three to score in the top 10 for all the resource pillars.
  • This is the biennial index analysed the travel and tourism sectors of 119 countries, evaluating them on a range of factors and policies that foster tourism development.

Satwik-Chirag Reclaim World No. 1 Spot in BWF Rankings

  • The Indian men’s badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have regained the top spot in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Rankings.
  • This gained after a remarkable victory at the Thailand Open Super 500 held in Bangkok.

Jenny Erpenbeck’s ‘Kairos’ wins the International Booker Prize 2024

  • German writer Jenny Erpenbeck and translator Michael Hofmann have won the International Booker Prize for their novel “Kairos”.
  • The novel follows the destructive love affair between a 19-year-old student and a married man in his 50s who meet on a bus in East Berlin around 1986.
  • The prize money is £50,000.
  • Last year’s winner was Time Shelter by Bulgarian author Georgi Gospodinov and translated by Angela Rodel.
  • The Booker Prizes celebrate the world’s best fiction originally written in English (the Booker Prize) or translated into English (the International Booker Prize).  
  • Albanian novelist Ismail Kadare was named the inaugural International Prize winner in 2005.

Former Karnataka MP Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi passes away

  • Senior Congress leader Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi and Lok Sabha MP passed away at 80.
  • He represented Gulbarga constituency of Karnataka in 1999 & 2004.
  • He was later elected as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council in 2014.

  • Real Madrid’s German international midfielder Toni Kroos announced that he will retire from all football after Euro 2024.

  • National Anti-Terrorism Day is annually observed on May 21.
  • The day is observed annually to commemorate the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
  • India’s youngest Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi tragically lost his life on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, due to an assassination carried out by a suicide bomber from the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam).

  • International Day for Biological Diversity is observed on May 22.
  • The International Day for Biological Diversity was established by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in
  • Initially, it was celebrated on December 29 to mark the day the Convention on Biological Diversity came into effect.
  • However, on December 20, 2000, the date was changed to May 22 to commemorate the adoption of the Convention at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992 and to avoid the many holidays in late December.

Indian and French Armies Participate in Joint Military Exercise ‘Shakti’

  • The Indian and French armies are sharing critical skills in jungle survival and mountain operations during the 7th edition of the Joint Exercise Shakti.
  • The biennial training event, being held in Umroi, Meghalaya.
  • The Exercise aims to enhance the militaries’ capabilities for multi-domain operations in semi-conventional scenarios.
  • The joint exercise involves a 90-member Indian contingent from the Rajput Regiment.
  • The French side has deployed 90 soldiers, mainly from the 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade.
  • The last edition was conducted in France in November 2021.
  • The exercise is celebrated since 2011.
