Ministry of Women and Child Development 'officially' dissolves Food and Nutrition Board

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development has officially dissolved the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB), a technical wing of the ministry responsible for providing technical and logistical support for community nutrition programmes.
  • The FNB had a network of offices and quality control laboratories in Delhi, Faridabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.

New Driving Licence Rules 2024

  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced new driving licence rules from June 1, 2024, bringing significant changes aimed at simplifying the process of obtaining a driving licence.
  • One of the most notable changes is that applicants no longer need to take a driving test at the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
  • Instead, the driving test can be conducted at accredited private driving schools.
  • Driving a car without a valid licence now incurs a penalty that can go as high as ₹2,000.
  • Severe punishments for minors driving include a ₹25,000 fine and potential action against the parents, along with the cancellation of the vehicle’s registration certificate.
  • The Ministry plans to phase out 9,000 outdated government vehicles and raise emission standards for other vehicles.
  • The procedure for submitting an application for a driver’s licence remains unchanged.

The highest observatory in the world just opened in Chile

  • The University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) officially opened after 26 years of planning and construction.
  • Sitting 18,500 feet high on Mount Chajnantor in the Atacama Desert in Chile, the 6.5-meter optical-infrared TAO telescope is now the highest in the world.
  • TAO replaces a smaller version of itself called MiniTAO, which held the highest telescope distinction before it.
  • It beats the Chacaltaya Observatory, owned by the University of Madrid and sitting 17,191 feet on Mount Chacaltaya in Bolivia.

Business and Economy

Indian agro-chem industry to touch $14.5 b by FY28

  • According to the report by Rubix Industry Insights on Agrochemicals, The Indian agrochemical industry, which enjoyed a 10-year long run of consistent expansion, experienced a contraction of around 3 per cent on a year-on-year basis during FY24 with revenues falling to around $10.3 billion from the previous year’s $10.6 billion.
  • Factors such as global de-stocking trend, influx of competitive products from China and reduced demand during rabi season due to low reservoir levels impacted the industry.
  • The resurgence will be fuelled by factors such as sustained government support, advancements in technology, and the expansion of the export market, all of which will propel the industry size to reach $14.5 billion by the close of FY28.

India targets to produce over 340 mt of foodgrains in 2024-25

  • The Indian government has set the foodgrains production target at 40 million tonnes (mt) during the 2024-25 crop year (July-June), which includes 159.97 mt from the kharif season, 164 mt from rabi season and 16.43 mt from zaid (summer) season.
  • According to the target fixed by the Agriculture Ministry after consulting the States, the total production of rice has been set at 30 mt, wheat at 115 mt, pulses at 29.90 mt, oilseeds at 44.75 mt and coarse cereals including Shree Anna at 59.20 mt.

IIT Madras partners with SilTerra Malaysia for silicon photonic processor chips

  • The Silicon Photonics Centre of ExcellenceCentre for Programmable Photonic Integrated Circuits and Systems (Silicon Photonics CoE-CPPICS) at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is partnering with SilTerra Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. for joint development of programmable silicon photonic processor chips.
  • This is especially for quantum computing and communication system level applications.
  • The partnership will be joint R&D on novel silicon photonic devices and circuits for energy efficient high-speed interconnect solutions for data centres, high-performance computing, and for AI/ML applications.
  • SilTerra Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a global semiconductor foundry has been innovating to bring semiconductor solutions.
  • Silicon Photonics CoE-CPPICS team is committed with its resources to enrich Silicon Photonics PDK libraries for SilTerra Silicon Photonics Foundry for mutual benefits.

New plant species discovered from Edamalayar forest range

  • Scientists from SNM College Maliankara, Ernakulam, National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, and King Fahd University, UAE, have reported the discovery of a new plant species Emblica chakrabartyi from Adichilthotti within the Edamalayar forest range of Kerala.
  • The species belonging to the gooseberry (Phyllanthaceae) family, has been named after Tapas Chakrabarty, former scientist at the Botanical Survey of India, for his contribution to the study on
  • The finding has been published in John Wiley & Sons’ International Journal, Nordic Journal of Botany, from Sweden.

Record-breaking 10 GW of solar energy capacity added in Q1 2024

  • The Indian solar segment has achieved a record capacity addition of 10 GW during the first quarter of 2024.
  • This is equal to the new addition made in the entire calendar year 2023.
  • This 10 GW addition marks the highest-ever quarterly increase to date.
  • In Q1 of 2023, the solar segment added just 2 GW.
  • In Q1 2024, a total of 2 GW of new power capacity was added, with solar power contributing two-thirds (66 per cent) of this. Large-scale solar projects accounted for 9.7 GW, including 1.8 GW from open-access solar projects.

Justice R. Mahadevan appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court

  • President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice R. Mahadevan, the seniormost puisne judge of the Madras High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court.
  • He replaced Chief Justice, Sanjay V. Gangapurwala who retired recently.
  • Puisne judge and puisne justice are terms for an ordinary judge or a judge of lesser rank of a particular court.

Chad’s Deby sworn in as president as Allamaye Halina named new PM

  • Chad’s newly elected president, Mahamat Idriss Deby, has been sworn in to succeed his late father after three years as an interim leader under military rule in the northcentral African country.
  • The country also announced that Allamaye Halina would assume the post of prime minister after Succes Masra announced his resignation from the position.

  • Air India appoints Sanjay Sharma as its new chief financial officer (CFO).

Delhi High Court Appoints Retired Justice Najmi Waziri as Chairperson of Equestrian Federation Of India's Ad-Hoc Administrative Committee

  • The Delhi High Court has appointed its retired judge, Justice Najmi Waziri, as the Chairperson of ad-hoc Administrative Committee constituted to supervise the administration of the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI).
  • Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju also directed that the committee will also comprise of former Chief Election Commissioner of India S.Y. Quraishi as the observer and Advocate.

New Delhi ranked 350 at Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index

  • Delhi has scored the 350th rank in the Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index, which has compared the world’s 1000 largest cities on parameters ranging from economics to human capital.
  • New York ranks first on the index, followed by London, San Jose, Tokyo, Paris, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Melbourne and Zurich.
  • The list of 1000 largest cities, spread across 163 different countries, also feature several other Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai.
  • However, no Indian city could make the Top 300.
  • The index contains five categories: Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment, and Governance, which are aggregated to create an overall score for each city.
  • In India, Bengaluru is ranked 411, Mumbai 427, Chennai 472, Kochi 521, Kolkata 528, Pune 534, Thrissur 550, Hyderabad 564 and Kozhikode 580.
  • Chandigarh (584), Tiruchirappalli (634), Pondicherry (646), Kottayam (649), Ahmedabad (654), Mysore (667), Coimbatore (669), Jalandhar (672), Thiruvananthapuram (686), Madurai (691), Bhubaneswar (704), Amritsar (717), Vellore (729), Ludhiana (730), Nagpur (744), Dehradun (745), Vasai-Virar (748), Kannur (759), Srinagar (761), Hubli-Dharwad (766), Salem (767), Guwahati (770), Jaipur (772), Belgaum (777), Mangalore (779) and Bhopal (792) also featured on the list.

Scientist Srinivas Kulkarni honoured with 2024 Shaw Prize in astronomy

  • Srinivas R Kulkarni, an Indian-origin American scientist and professor at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), has been awarded the 2024 Shaw Prize in astronomy.
  • The Shaw Prize, known as the ‘Nobel of the East’, honours Kulkarni’s discoveries on millisecond pulsars, gamma ray bursts, supernovae, and other transient astronomical phenomena.
  • The annual Shaw Prize consists of three awards in astronomy, life science and medicine, and mathematical sciences, each carrying a monetary prize of $1.2 million.
  • The Shaw Prize is an international prize that presents three annual awards, namely the Prize in Astronomy, the Prize in Life Science and Medicine, and the Prize in Mathematical Sciences, beginning from 2004.
  • The award was established by Mr Run Run Shaw in 2002.

  • The movie was Directed by Payal Kapadia, the film stars Kani Kushruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridayu Haroon in lead roles.
  • “SUNFLOWERS WERE THE FIRST ONES TO KNOW”, a course end film by Chidanand Naik, a student of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), received the Cannes’ La Cinef Award for Best Short.
  • The film has been directed by Chidananda S Naik, shot by Suraj Thakur, edited by Manoj V and sound by Abhishek Kadam.
  • Actor Anasuya Sengupta created history by becoming the first Indian to win the Best Actress Award at the 77th Cannes film Festival in France.
  • She bagged the esteemed award for her captivating performance in ‘The Shameless’, written and directed by the Bulgarian filmmaker Constantin Bojanov, in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival.

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the launch of ‘Let’s Move India’, an initiative to inspire people to celebrate the athletes participating in the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
  • The move invites people from across the country to join the movement through a digital challenge on social media.
  • The IOC has joined forces with Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist, and an IOC Athletes’ Commission member, and together, they will extend invitations to schools across the nation to join the movement, as part of the Olympic Values Education Programme.

Nepal Celebrates The 2568th Buddha Jayanti on May 23

  • Buddha’s Birthday or Buddha Day (also known as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, and Buddha Pournami) is a primarily Buddhist festival that is celebrated in most of South, Southeast and East Asia, commemorating the birth of the prince Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Gautama Buddha and founded Buddhism.
  • This year the day falls on May 23.
  • According to Buddhist tradition and archaeologists, Gautama Buddha, c. 563-483 BCE, was born at Lumbini in Nepal.
  • In South Asian and Southeast Asian countries (except Vietnam and the Philippines) Cambodia as well as Mongolia, Buddha’s birthday is celebrated on the full moon day of the Vaisakha month of the Buddhist calendar and the Hindu calendar, which usually falls in April or May of the Western Gregorian calendar.

  • International Day to End Obstetric Fistula is annually observed on May 23.
  • Obstetric fistula is a hole between the birth canal and bladder or rectum, caused by prolonged, obstructed labour without access to timely, high-quality medical treatment.
  • It leaves women and girls leaking urine, faeces or both, and often leads to chronic medical problems, depression, social isolation and deepening poverty.
  • Ninety percent of pregnancies involving fistula end in stillbirth.

  • International Day of the Markhor is annually observed on May 24.
  • The markhor (Capra falconeri) is an iconic and ecologically significant species found across the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia, including Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
  • The UN General Assembly proclaimed 24 May the International Day of the Markhor, A/RES/78/278, and we celebrate it for the first time in 2024.
