Tamil Nadu signed business pacts for Rs 800 crores with Japanese firms on Chief Minister Stalin's visit

  • The Tamil Nadu government signed memoranda of understanding (MoU) worth Rs 800 crore with Japanese firms during Chief Minister M K Stalin’s ongoing visit of that country.
  • A total of six MoUs envisaging Rs 818.90 crore investments in the fields of automotive spares, metals used in space, defence and construction, as well as construction engineering were signed in Tokyo in the presence of Stalin.

Odisha

  • The Odisha Government has decided to develop “Konark Sun Temple Complex” at a cost of ₹209 crores as part of the Konark Heritage Area Development Plan (KHADP) under the Integrated Development of Heritage & Monuments and Tourist Destination Scheme completed within a period of 18 calendar months.
  • The Odisha government approved 18 important proposals, including the plan to launch a new ‘Mo Ghara’ housing scheme in rural areas of the state.
  • The ‘Mo Ghara’ scheme will provide financial assistance to meet the aspiration of the lower and lower-middle-income households of rural Odisha.
  • The financial implication of the ‘Mo Ghara’ scheme for approximately 4 lakh beneficiaries is expected to be Rs 2,150 crore over a period of two years.

Schemes

Atal Bhujal Yojana water scheme extended by two years

  • The Jal Jeevan Mission has reached 60% of its countrywide target, adding 23.4 million households
  • The Atal Bhujal Yojana (Atal Jal), India’s central sector water conservation scheme, will continue for an additional two years beyond its original 2025 end date, according to a decision made by the National Level Steering Committee (NLSC).
  • Initially launched in 2020, Atal Jal is active across 8,220 water-stressed Gram Panchayats within 80 districts of seven Indian states, including Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
  • It has focused on driving community behavioural change towards conservation and smart water management.
  • in the fiscal year ended 2022-23.
  • Of India’s total of 190.4 million rural households, 116 million now have a functioning water tap.
  • At the start of the mission, a baseline survey showed that less than 17% or 32.3 million households had a tap connection.
  • The country crossed another milestone in the journey towards ‘Har Ghar Jal’ with over 11.66 crore (60%) rural households provided with tap water supply in their homes.
  • As on date, Gujarat, Telangana, Goa, Haryana, Punjab and the Union territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Daman Diu & Dadra Nagar Haveli and Puducherry have achieved 100% coverage.
  • Under the mission, 2,078 water testing labs have been installed, of which 1,122 are accredited with National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, according to data from the Jal Shakti ministry.
  • Jal Jeevan Mission was launched on 15/08/2019.

Telangana achieved 100% coverage of PMJDY

  • Since the launch of Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana, Telangana State has achieved 100 percent household coverage of banking services extending them to all sections of people.
  • As per the Social Security Administration survey, the state has achieved 100 percent coverage and the benefits of 135 welfare schemes and programmes under 20 departments are credited to these zero-balance bank accounts of the beneficiaries.
  • Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), the biggest financial inclusion initiative in the world, was announced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 15thAugust 2014 from the ramparts of the Red Fort and launched by him on 28th August 2014 across the country.
  • Guinness Book of World Records – Most bank accounts opened in one week as part of the Financial Inclusion Campaign is 18,096,130 and was achieved by the Department of Financial Services, Government of India from 23rd to 29th August, 2014.
  • Goa and Kerala became the first states in the country to achieve 100 percent Financial Inclusion under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY).
  • Union Finance Ministry also announced that three Union Territories (UTs) namely Chandigarh, Puducherry and Lakshadweep achieved 100 percent financial inclusion under PMJDY.

Banking and Finance

RBI's balance sheet grew 2.5 pc to Rs 63.45 lakh crore in FY23

  • The size of the balance sheet increased by Rs 1,54,453.97 crore, i.e., 2.50 per cent from Rs 61,90,302.27 crore as on March 31, 2022 to Rs 63,44,756.24 crore as on March 31, 2023.
  • While income for the year increased by 47.06 per cent, the expenditure increased by 14.05 per cent.
  • The year ended with an overall surplus of Rs 87,416.22 crore as against Rs 30,307.45 crore in the previous year, resulting in an increase of 188.43 per cent.
  • The RBI transfers the surplus as dividend to the central government.
  • The increase on the asset side was due to rise in foreign investments, gold, and loans and advances by 2.31 per cent, 15.30 per cent and 38.33 per cent, respectively.
  • On the liability side, the expansion was due to increase in notes issued, revaluation accounts and other liabilities by 7.81 per cent, 20.50 per cent and 79.07 per cent, respectively.
  • RBI further said domestic assets constituted 27.69 per cent while the foreign currency assets and gold (including gold deposit and gold held in India) constituted 72.31 per cent of total assets as on March 31, 2023 as against 28.22 per cent and 71.78 per cent, respectively, as on March 31, 2022.
  • A provision of about Rs 1.31 lakh crore was made and transferred to Contingency Fund (CF).
  • No provision was made towards Asset Development Fund (ADF).
  • The central bank spent Rs 4,682.80 crore on printing of currency notes during 2022-23, marginally lower than Rs 4,984.80 crore in the preceding year.
  • As on March 31, 2023, total gold held by the Reserve Bank was 794.63 metric tonnes as compared to 760.42 metric tonnes as on March 31, 2022.
  • The increase, the RBI said, is on account of addition of 34.21 metric tonnes of gold during the year.
  • The value of gold (including gold deposit) held as asset of Banking Department increased by 17.20 per cent from Rs 1,96,864.38 crore as on March 31, 2022 to Rs 2,30,733.95 crore as on March 31, 2023.

Razorpay unveiled India's fastest one-step payments solution Turbo UPI

  • Razorpay has launched ‘Turbo UPI’ which the fintech unicorn says is India’s fastest one-step UPI (unified payments interface) payment solution.
  • This new product allows customers of online merchants to make UPI payments directly without getting redirected to a third-party UPI app during checkout.
  • Razorpay Turbo UPI aims to deliver a 5X faster payment experience.
  • It streamlines the payment process and eliminates any redirection to external apps.
  • This helps businesses achieve a significant increase in the success rate of UPI payments by 10 per cent. 
  • This solution was developed in partnership with NPCI and Axis Bank.

Goldman Sachs hikes India's 2023 GDP forecast to 6.3%

  • Goldman Sachs has pegged GDP growth for the Jan-March 2023 quarter at 4.9%, 6.5% for April-June, 5.9% for July-September and 8.1% for October-December.
  • Goldman Sachs raised India’s GDP growth forecast for calendar year 2023 by 30 basis points to 6.3%, citing a rise in exports.

FDI equity inflows dipped 22% to USD 46 bn in 2022-23

  • Foreign direct investment (FDI) into India declined by 22 per cent to USD 46 billion in 2022-23, dragged by lower inflows in computer hardware and software, and automobile industry, according to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) data.
  • The FDI inflows stood at USD 58.77 billion during 2021-22.
  • The overseas inflows during the January-March 2023 quarter plunged by 40.55 per cent to USD 9.28 billion.
  • The FDI equity inflows declined in January, February and March in the last fiscal to USD 4.05 billion, USD 2.85 billion and USD 2.38 billion respectively as against USD 6.4 billion in January 2022, USD 4.61 billion in February 2022 and USD 4.6 billion in March last year.
  • Total FDI inflows, which include equity inflows, re-invested earnings and other capital, declined by 16 per cent to USD 70.97 billion in the last fiscal as against USD 84.83 billion in 2021-22.
  • During April-March 2022-23, Singapore emerged as the top investor with USD 17.2 billion FDI.
  • It was followed by Mauritius (USD 6.13 billion), the US (USD 6 billion), the UAE (USD 3.35 billion), the Netherlands (USD 2.5 billion), Japan (USD 1.8 billion), UK (USD 1.73 billion), Cyprus (USD 1.27 billion), Cayman island (USD 772 million), and Germany (USD 547 million).
  • The FDI inflows have contracted in 2022-23 from Mauritius, the US, the Netherlands, the Cayman Islands, and Germany.
  • Though the computer software and hardware sector attracted the highest inflows of USD 9.4 billion during the last financial year, these inflows are down as compared to USD 14.5 billion in 2021-22.
  • Similarly, FDI in the automobile industry dipped significantly to USD 1.9 billion in 2022-23 as compared to about USD 7 billion in 2021-22.
  • However, the inflows have recorded growth in sectors including services (USD 8.7 billion), trading (USD 4.8 billion), telecommunications (USD 713 million), pharma (USD 8.7 billion), 2 billion), and chemicals (USD 1.85 billion). State-wise, though Maharashtra received the highest inflows of USD 14.8 billion during the last financial year, the inflows are down as compared to USD 15.44 billion in 2021-22.
  • Similarly the overseas inflows in Karnataka plunged to USD 10.42 billion in 2022-23 as against USD 22 billion in 2021-22.
  • Other states/UTs where FDI dipped in 2022-23 include Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Telangana, and West Bengal.
  • On the other hand, FDI in Gujarat has increased to USD 4.71 billion in 2022-23 as against USD 2.7 billion in 2021-22.
  • FDI has also reported positive growth in Rajasthan.

Unemployment rate declines to 6.8% in January-March 2023: NSO survey

  • India’s unemployment rate declined to 6.8 per cent in January-March 2023 (Q4FY23) from 7.2 per cent in the previous quarter of the same year, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the National Statistical Office (NSO).
  • The unemployment rate was 6.0 per cent for men and 9.2 per cent for women.
  • It was 6.5 per cent and 9.6 per cent for men and women respectively, in October– December 2022.
  • According to the PLFS report, female labour force participation grew marginally to 22.7 percent in Q4FY23, up from 22.3 per cent the previous quarter.
  • The male labour force participation stands at 73.5 per cent.
  • The worker-population ratio (WPR) also witnessed a slight increase as compared to the December quarter.
  • The WPR in urban areas for persons aged 15 and above stood at 45.2 per cent in January- March 2023, an increase from 44.7 per cent in Q3.
  • The WPR among men was 45.2 per cent and 20.6 per cent among women.
  • It was 68.6 per cent and 20.2 per cent, respectively, in the third quarter.

AIIMS Delhi signed MoU with HSSC for skill development of hospital staff

  • The AIIMS Delhi has signed a memorandum of understanding with the healthcare sector skill council for the skilling, reskilling, and upskilling of various cadres of hospital staff.
  • The HSSC is a recognised awarding body by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) under the ambit of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
  • It assess and certifies candidates on skill qualifications in the healthcare sector including AYUSH, social sector and hospital management services with the support of industry experts, academia, line ministries and regulators.

National Skill Development Corporation partnered with CamuEdTech to bridge industry, academia gap

  • National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting skill development in India, has announced a strategic partnership with Camu, the flagship brand of Octoze Technologies, to launch NSDC Academy’s Skills for Higher Education powered by Camu EdTech.
  • NSDC Academy, with its extensive network of over 800 skilling partners, aims to close the skills gap between the industry and the education sector by offering a comprehensive range of courses in collaboration with Camu.
  • The partnership will provide Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) with a full stack of digital solutions, including a Student Information System, a Learning Management System, and a Student Success Platform powered by CamuEngage.
  • The collaboration between NSDC and Camu will offer Higher Education Institutions a wide range of capabilities, including end-to-end placement preparation, mentoring by industry experts, specialized skilling programs, efficient job placements, student entrepreneurship programs, test preparation for K-12 (IIT JEE, NEET), IAS, IPS, GATE, international admissions, research competencies, accreditations & NIRF solution, and more.

Osmania University scientist discovered new species of Bat in Karnataka

  • A mother and son researcher duo has discovered a new species of bat from a cave in Makuta, Kodagu district, Karnataka.
  • Dr.Bhargavi Srinivasulu, a researcher with the Osmania University along with her son, Aditya Srinivasulu, a PhD researcher based at University of Reading, UK, have named their discovery, as Miniopetrus srinii Srini’s Bent-winged Bat.
  • In India, four species of bent-winged bats are known, with the discovery of the new species the number has increased to five.
  • The new species has been named in honour of Prof. C Srinivasulu, a bat biologist working in OU.
  • The description of the new species has been published in the latest issue of Zootaxa a peer-reviewed scientific mega journal for animal taxonomists.

Inox Wind bagged repeat order of 150 MW from NTPC Renewable Energy

  • Leading wind energy solutions provider Inox Wind has bagged an order for a 150 MW wind power project from NTPC Renewable Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy, which is the renewable energy business vertical of NTPC.
  • The project shall be executed in the state of Gujarat.
  • With this, the total orders from NTPC stand at 550 megawatt (MW) awarded till date to Inox Wind.

ONGC will invest Rs 1 lakh crores in energy transition, targets net-zero by 2038

  • India’s top oil and gas producer ONGC will invest Rs 1 lakh crore by 2030 on energy transition projects as it targets net zero carbon emissions by 2038, its chairman Arun Kumar Singh.
  • The firm joins fellow state-owned oil and gas firms Indian Oil (IOC), Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), GAIL and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) in preparing roadmaps for net zero emissions as part of the nation’s commitment to deal with the climate challenge.

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tendulkar.
  • The batting maestro will be the campaign’s brand ambassador for the next five years.
  • The Swachh Mukh Abhiyaan is a national campaign undertaken by the Indian Dental Association to improve oral health and hygiene and educate people about its importance.

CAG Murmu re-elected as external auditor of WHO for 4-year term
