Asia’s largest open-air annual trade fair

  • Asia’s largest open-air annual trade fair the Bali Jatra, commemorating the glorious ancient maritime legacy of Odisha, was inaugurated on the banks of the Mahanadi River in Cuttack, Odisha.
  • This year the festival started on the occasion of Kartika Purnima.
  • Cultural troupes from across Odisha and other states will perform Odissi, Chhau, Bihu, Mahari, Gotipua, Sambalpuri, Santali folk dance, and other dances in the evenings on the fairgrounds.
  • About two thousand stalls displaying various handicrafts, household goods, and foods are expected to come up on the fairground this year.
  • Elaborate security arrangements have been made by police keeping in mind an expected huge gathering.

Ayushman Arogya Mandir

  • The Union Government has decided to rename the existing Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs) as ‘Ayushman Arogya Mandir’ with the tag-line ‘Arogyam Parmam Dhanam’.
  • It has been underlined that the National Health Mission (NHM) logo is to be retained in the rebranded centres.
  • In its letter to all States and Union Territories, the Union Health Ministry has urged that they complete the rebranding process by the end of 2023.
  • As part of this effort, states have been instructed to upload photographs of the rebranded primary health facilities onto the AB-HWC portal.
  • India currently has more than 1.6 lakh AB-HWCs which aims to provide comprehensive primary healthcare, including both maternal and child health services, and free essential drugs and diagnostic services close to people’s homes through AB-HWCs.
  • The Centre offers screenings for hypertension, diabetes, oral, breast and cervical cancer.

  • Angkor Wat, located in Cambodia, is now considered the eighth Wonder of the World, beating Italy’s Pompeii.
  • The title of the eighth Wonder of the World is given to outstanding buildings or projects.
  • The temple complex measures 6 hectares (1,626,000 ; 402 acres).
  • The Guinness World Records considers it as the largest religious structure in the world.
  • It was Built by King Suryavarman II in the 12th century.
  • Angkor Wat was first a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu but later transformed into a Buddhist temple.
  • The intricate carvings on its walls tell stories from Hindu and Buddhist myths.
  • The World Heritage Committee at its 16th session in Santa Fe adopted by Decision of 14 December 1992 to inscribe Angkor on the World Heritage List and on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Malaysia to allow visa-free entry to Indian citizens

  • Malaysia will scrap entry visa requirements for Indian citizens visiting the nation beginning the December 01 2023.
  • Now, Indian nationals may stay for up to 30 days visa-free in Malaysia.
  • Along with Indian citizens, Chinese nationals will also be allowed visa-free entry from December 1.
  • Thailand, on November 10 2023, removed Visa requirements for Indian citizens and offered a 30-day stay for the tourists.
  • The policy will be in effect till May 10, 2024.
  • The countries that offer Visa free for India were Bhutan, El Salvador, Haiti, Macao, Palestinian Territories, Senegal, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Fiji, Indonesia, Mauritius, Qatar, Serbia, Tunisia, Ecuador, Grenada, Jamaica, Nepal, Saint Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines & Vanuatu.

India Built High Impact Community Development Projects in Nepal

  • Under ‘Nepal-India Development Cooperation’ School and laboratory buildings of Shree Gautam Buddha Secondary School, Buddhabhumi Municipality, Kapilvastu District, were built with Government of India’s financial assistance of 33.23 million.
  • These were inaugurated by Prasanna Shrivastava, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India, Kathmandu and government officials of Kapilvastu districts.
  • The Government of India grant under ‘Nepal-India Development Cooperation’ was utilized for the construction of a double storied school building, three storied lab building and for procurement of furniture and lab equipment.
  • The project was taken up as a High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP), under an agreement between Government of India and Government of Nepal.
  • This project was implemented through the District Coordination Committee, Kapilvastu.

Top beneficiaries of EU’s GSP scheme in 2022

    • India and Indonesia were the top two beneficiaries of the European Union’s Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) schemes for exports in 2022, with clothing, machinery, and footwear accounting for nearly half of all standard GSP imports, per a joint report of the EU to the European Parliament and the Council.
    • In 2023, however, the situation is expected to change significantly as some of the largest recipients of GSP benefits, including several sectors from India, graduated out of the scheme.
    • Under the GSP scheme, the EU allows identified products originating in certain developing countries preferential access to its markets in the form of reduced or zero rates of customs duties.
    • As the items become more competitive and reach a particular threshold, the GSP is withdrawn.
    • The EU has already withdrawn the GSP benefit from about 1,800 items from India in 2023, and the present policy will now continue for another four years until 2027.
    • The items include electrical machinery, plastics, articles of stone and articles of leather and could affect exports worth $7.9 billion, per industry estimates.

‘Mukh Mantri Teerth Yatra’ scheme in Punjab

  • The Punjab government in launched the ‘Mukh Mantri Teerth Yatra’ scheme.
  • It will help people visit holy places across the country.
  • The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) described the scheme as a “relaunch” of an Akali Dal project in 2016.
  • Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched the scheme in Punjab’s Dhuri.
  • The state government started the scheme to help pilgrims visit holy places across the country.
  • A team of doctors, volunteers and officials will be travelling with the pilgrims.

  • The Reserve Bank updated the ‘Alert List’ of unauthorised forex trading platforms by adding 19 more entities taking the total to
  • The Alert List contains the names of entities, which are neither authorised to deal in forex under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA) nor to operate electronic trading platform (ETP) for forex transactions under the Electronic Trading Platforms (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2018.

Foxconn will invest another $1.6 billion in India

  • iPhone maker Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., also known as Foxconn, plans to expand its footprint in India with another New Taiwan (NT) $50 billion (or $1.6 billion) investment as part of its strategy to diversify outside
  • The investment was made through a Foxconn subsidiary, Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development, which has been registered in Maharashtra since
  • Foxconn is the largest contract manufacturer for Apple in the world and gets half of its revenues from making Apple products.
  • Even in India, Foxconn’s production of Apple products, outpaces its competitors Tata and Pegatron.
  • So far, the Taiwanese electronics major has invested nearly $8 billion in India.
  • But it plans to seriously bump its investment into the country, as the tensions between the United States and Beijing continue to be on the rise.

Nasscom signed MoU with NRW Global to establish launchpad in Germany

  • Nasscom has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NRW Global Business to promote innovation, investment and technological exchange between North Rhine-Westfalia (NRW) in Germany and India.
  • Nasscom, is the apex body for the $245-billion technology industry in India having over 3,000 member companies constituting 90% of the industry’s revenue.

HDFC Bank appointments

  • HDFC Bank Limited announced that based on the recommendation of the Nomination & Remuneration Committee, the Board of Directors of the company approved the appointment of Harsh Kumar Bhanwala as as an Additional Independent Director of the Bank for a period of three consecutive years from January 25, 2024 to January 24, 2027 (both days inclusive).
  • The Bank’s Board had also approved the appointment of Srinivasa Rangan as the Executive Director, also known as the Whole-time Director, of the bank commencing from November 23, 2023, is set for a three-year duration, contingent upon the shareholders’ approval.

  • Edtech major BYJU’S has elevated Jiny Thattil as its Chief Technology Officer.
  • He would replace Anil Goel, who left the company after three years as CTO.

The Booker Prize 2023

  • Prophet Song by Paul Lynch has been named the winner of the Booker Prize 2023.
  • The author receives £50,000 and was presented with his trophy by Shehan Karunatilaka, the 2022 winner, at a ceremony held at Old Billingsgate, London.
  • The event was hosted by Samira Ahmed and broadcast live as a special episode of BBC Radio 4 Front Row.
  • It was also livestreamed in an hour-long YouTube programme, hosted by Jack Edwards and featuring interviews with special guests.
  • The Booker Prize, formerly the Booker Prize for Fiction (1969–2001) and the Man Booker Prize (2002–2019), is a literary award conferred each year for the best novel written in the English language, which was published in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

NTPC Kanti won award for Best CSR Project for women development

  • NTPC Kanti has been awarded the third prize for Best CSR Project for Women Development, in recognition of its efforts to empower women in the region at the International Public Relations Festival – 2023.

  • Greentech Foundation, New Delhi, conferred Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) with the 23rd Greentech Environment Excellence Award 2023 at Sonmarg in Jammu and Kashmir.
