National News

Cabinet Approves India's Own LIGO Project - Gravitational-Wave Detector Worth Rs 2,600 Crore to Be Built by 2030

  • The Union Cabinet has approved a gravitational-wave detector project in Maharashtra costing Rs 2,600 crore, estimated to be built by 2030.
  • Union minister Jitendra Singh stated that a 174-acre land has been acquired in Hingoli district for its development.
  • LIGO-India, the third observatory of its kind, will be built to match the specifications of the LIGO observatories in the US, and will work alongside them.
  • Currently, the project is being collaboratively worked upon by a consortium of Indian research institutions and U.S. observatories along with various international partners.
  • The Indian government granted provisional approval for the project in February 2016.
  • The proponents have now identified and assessed a suitable, stable site for the detector, and are now in the planning phase for the observatory.
  • The L-shaped LIGO instrument boasts two arms, each measuring 4 km long.
  • The Department of Atomic Energy and the Department of Science and Technology are building LIGO-India in partnership with the U.S. National Science Foundation and various national and international research institutions.
  • The United States will supply critical lab components valued at approximately Rs 560 crore.

Vande Bharat Express

  • India’s 12th Vande Bharat Express has been flagged of by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The indigenous semi-high speed train has been introduced on Secunderabad-Tirupati route.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi also flagged off India’s 13th Vande Bharat Express Train on the Chennai-Coimbatore route.

G20 Session

  • 2nd Meeting of G20 Development Working Group (DWG) was held at the KTDC Convention Centre Kumarakom in Kerala with participation from over 80 delegates from G20 Members, 9 invitee countries, and various international and regional organizations.
  • The sessions were co-chaired by India’s DWG Co-Chairs – Ministry of External Affairs, Joint Secretaries Mr. Nagaraj K. Naidu and Ms Eenam Gambhir.

Tamil Nadu government’s ‘TN REACH’ initiative to use 80+ unused helipads soon

  • More than 80 unused helipads across Tamil Nadu will soon be put to use with helicopter services planned by the State government.
  • The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidco) has developed a mechanism called Tamil Nadu Regional Aerial Connectivity through Helicopters (TN REACH), will be formulated to use helicopters for travel between cities and towns.

PM Modi inaugurates New Integrated Terminal Building Phase -I at Chennai Airport

  • Prime Minister inaugurated the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) Phase -I at Chennai Airport.
  • The total outlay of the project is 2467 crore rupees.
  • The NITB Phase I spanning over an area of 1.36 lakh square meter boasts of an impressive array of airport amenities.
  • With 100 check-in counters, 108 immigration counters, 17 elevators, 17 escalators, 6 baggage reclaim belts, and more facilities passengers are guaranteed a seamless experience inside the terminal.

3rd edition of Jammu Film Festival to commence at Abhinav Theatre

  • The 3rd edition of the Jammu Film Festival will commence at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu.
  • The festival will feature screenings of over 50 feature films, short films, and documentaries from 11 countries.

PM Modi inaugurates, lays foundation stone of various projects in Telangana

  • The Prime Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for various rail and road projects worth over 11 thousand crore rupees in Telangana.
  • The re-development of Secunderabad railway station at a cost of about 715 crore rupees, 13 new MMTS services, and 6 national highway stretches and construction works of AIIMS Bibinagar are among the projects.

Shri Amit Shah lays the foundation stone of Hariharpur Sangeet Vishwavidyalayain Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh

  • Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah laid the foundation stone of Hariharpur Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 117 development projects worth Rs.4583 crore in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh.
  • These include foundation stone laying of 1358 schemes at a cost of Rs 4257 crore under ‘Nal se Jal’ and 55 schemes related to widening and strengthening of roads at a cost of Rs.175 crore.
  • Apart from this, 61 schemes at a cost of Rs.151 crore related to 16 different departments of the state also inaugurated.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah to visit Arunachal Pradesh to launch the ‘Vibrant Villages Programme’ in Kibithoo

  • Amit Shah will launch the ‘Vibrant Villages Programme’ in Kibithoo, a border village in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Government has approved the ‘Vibrant Villages Programme’ with Central components of forty eighty hundred crore rupees including 25 hundred crore rupees exclusively for road connectivity for the Financial Years 2022-23 to 2025-26.
  • Under the Programme, 2967 villages in 46 blocks of 19 districts abutting the northern border in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territories of Ladakh have been identified for comprehensive development.
  • In the first phase, 662 villages have been identified for priority coverage, which includes 455 villages in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Union Home Minister will also inaugurate nine Micro Hydel Projects of the Arunachal Pradesh government constructed under the “Golden Jubilee Border Illumination Programme” in Kibithoo.

Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY)

  • Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) was launched on April 8, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to facilitate easy collateral-free micro-credit of up to Rs 10 lakh to non-corporate, non-farm small and micro-entrepreneurs for income-generating activities.
  • Banks and financial institutions have sanctioned Rs 23.2 lakh crore to over 40.82 crore beneficiaries under the Mudra Yojana.
  • The scheme was launched to encourage small businesses, and banks were asked to provide collateral-free loans up to Rs 10 lakh under three categories — Shishu (up to Rs 50,000), Kishore (between Rs 50,000 and Rs 5 lakh), and Tarun (Rs 10 lakh).
  • Of the total, Shishu accounts for 83 percent of the total loans while Kishore 15 percent, and the remaining 2 percent Tarun.

IIFL secures $100 million funding from EDC, Deutsche Bank

  • IIFL Finance (IIFL) has secured $100 million in long-term funding, jointly, from Export Development Canada (EDC) and Deutsche Bank.
  • It secured $ 50 million from EDC and $50 million from Deutsche Bank, respectively.
  • The deal was structured under the aegis of Deutsche Bank as mandated lead arranger, book runner and co-financier.
  • This would also be IIFL’s second loan from EDC.
  • It had previously secured funding of $100 million from EDC in 2019.
  • IIFL Finance had raised $400 million through its maiden dollar bond issue in February 2020.

RBI to launch centralised portal PRAVAAH for licencing, approval applications

  • Reserve Bank of India will launch a secured web-based centralised portal named ‘PRAVAAH’ (Platform for Regulatory Application, Validation and AutHorisation) to simplify and streamline application processes.
  • The portal will show time limits for deciding on the applications/approvals sought.
  • This measure will bring greater efficiencies into regulatory processes and facilitate ease of doing business for the regulated entities of RBI.
  • Gradually, it will be extended to all types of applications made to RBI across all functions, the central bank said in its statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies.
  • The step has also been taken to comply with the Union Budget 2023-24 announcement regarding the need to simplify, ease and reduce cost of compliance by financial sector regulators within laid down time limits to decide the applications under various regulations.

KSINC launches solar-powered tourist vessel Sooryamshu

  • Sooryamshu, the first solar-powered boat of the Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation, sets sail on its maiden journey in the Kochi.
  • The ₹3.95-crore vessel that can carry up to 100 passengers was built at a yard in Sri Lanka and certified by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
  • It will operate in the Marine Drive-Kadamakudy corridor.

‘Commemoration of 50 years of Project Tiger’

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the program ‘Commemoration of 50 years of Project Tiger’ at Mysuru University in Mysuru, Karnataka.
  • The Prime Minister also launched the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA).
  • He released the publications – ‘Amrit Kaal Ka Vision for Tiger Conservation’, a summary report of the 5th cycle of Management Effectiveness Evaluation of Tiger Reserves, declared tiger numbers and released the summary report of All India Tiger Estimation (5th cycle).
  • The number of tigers in India is 3167.
  • He also released a commemorative coin on the completion of 50 years of Project Tiger.
  • The Prime Minister expressed happiness that India is home to 75% of the world’s tiger population in the 75th year of Indian independence.
  • The tiger reserves in India cover 75,000 square kilometers of land and in the past ten to twelve years, the tiger population in the country has increased by 75 percent.

Tripura bags award in implementation of e-Procurement among Northeastern states

  • Tripura has been awarded as the best-performing state among North Eastern States in the implementation of e-Procurement at a National Workshop on e-Procurement organized by the Union Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology at the India Habitat Center at New Delhi.
  • Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said that the state has been awarded by the central government in recognition of significant work in various departments of the state government in the last 5 years.

Indian Navy conducts offshore security exercise 'Prasthan' in Mumbai

  • Indian Navy conducted ‘Prasthan’, a bi-annual co-ordinated exercise along with other defence, state and civilian agencies in the offshore development area off Mumbai.
  • The exercise is held every six months to validate measures and procedures to address contingencies that may occur in oil production platforms.
  • The current exercise was conducted on the Greatdrill Chaaya platform, located about 30 nm South West of Mumbai Harbour.

President Droupadi Murmu takes maiden sortie in Sukhoi-30 at Tezpur in Assam

  • President Droupadi Murmu took a historic sortie in a Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter aircraft at the Tezpur Air Force Station in Assam.
  • The President, who is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, flew for nearly 30 minutes covering Brahmaputra and Tezpur valley with a view of Himalayas before returning to the Air Force Station.
  • The aircraft was flown by Group Captain Naveen Kumar, Commanding Officer of the 106 Squadron.
  • President Murmu is the third President and second woman President to undertake such a sortie.
