NTPC launches new edition of Girl Empowerment Mission

  • NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power company, is gearing up to launch the latest edition of Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.
  • The program aligns with the Government of India’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative and aims to tackle gender inequality by nurturing girls’ imaginations and fostering their ability to explore opportunities.
  • GEM does this through a 1-month workshop for young girls during summer holidays, by offering them a platform for their all-round upliftment and development.
  • Starting from April 2024, the new edition of GEM will add nearly 3,000 meritorious children belonging to underprivileged sections of the society at 42 identified locations of the power sector PSU.
  • With this, the total number of children benefiting from the Mission will cross 10,000.
  • The GEM Mission, initiated as a pilot project in 2018 with just three locations and 392 participants, has flourished into a nationwide movement.
  • Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the program has continued to expand its reach and impact.
  • Till date, it has benefited a total of 7,424 girls, with the number of participants steadily increasing each year.
  • In 2023 alone, 2,707 girls participated in the workshop across 40 locations of NTPC, spanning 16 states of India.

Sangeet Natak Akademi to organize ‘Shakti - Festival of Music and Dance’ at seven different Shaktipeeths in the country

  • To rejuvenate the Temple Traditions in the country Sangeet Natak Akademi, under the series of Kala Pravah, is organizing the festival under the title ‘Shakti a festival of music and dance’ during the holy Navaratri.
  • Since Navaratri symbolizes the power of nine goddesses, the Akademi will organize the festival celebrating temple traditions under the title Shakti at seven different Shaktipeeths from 9th to 17th April 2024, in different parts of the country.
  • The inauguration of the Shakti festival will begin from the Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati and this will be continued at Mahalakshmi Temple, Kolhapur, Maharashtra, Jwalamukhi Temple, Kangada, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura Sundari, Udaipur, Tripura, Ambaji Temple, Banaskantha, Gujarat, Jai Durga Shaktipeeth, Deoghar, Jharkhand and it will be concluded on April 17 2024 at Shaktipeeth Maa Harsidhi Temple, Jaisinghpur, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

British man named the world's oldest person

  • Brit John Alfred Tinniswood, 111, was confirmed as the world’s oldest man by Guinness World Records.
  • Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, who passed away this month at the impressive age of 114.
  • Gisaburo Sonobe from Japan, who was next longest-lived, died March 31 at 112.
  • Born on 26 August 1912, Tinniswood is one of a dwindling number of Brits to have lived through two world wars, and himself served in the British Army Pay Corps in WWII.

EU-India join forces to promote start-up collaboration on Recycling of E-Vehicles Batteries under Trade and Technology Council

  • The European Union (EU) and India launched an Expression of Interest (EoI) for startups working in Battery Recycling Technologies for Electric Vehicles (EVs) for a matchmaking event.
  • The matchmaking aims to enhance the cooperation between European and Indian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and startups in the clean and green technologies sector.
  • The intended exchange of knowledge and expertise will be instrumental in advancing the circularity of rare materials and transitioning towards carbon neutrality in both India and the EU.
  • This initiative takes place under the India-EU Trade & Technology Council (TTC), announced by India and the European Commission in New Delhi.
  • This event is also part of a broader effort to promote a sustainable agenda, foster innovation, and forge stronger economic relations between the European Union and India.
  • The EoI for the Matchmaking Event launched, provides a platform for Indian and EU startups/SMEs in the field of EV Battery Recycling Technologies to pitch their innovative solutions and engage with Indian/European venture capitalists and solution adopters.
  • Twelve innovators, six each from India and the EU will be selected and get a pitching opportunity during the Matchmaking Event, scheduled for June 2024.
  • Six finalists (three from the EU and three from India) will be selected following their pitching presentations and awarded the possibility to visit India and the EU, respectively.

Gangaur Festival is celebrated in Rajasthan

  • Gangaur is an important festival celebrated throughout Rajasthan in various forms.
  • The term “Gan” refers to Lord Shiva while “Gauri” or “Gaur” represents Goddess Parvati, Shiva’s heavenly consort.
  • Gangaur is celebrated to commemorate their union and symbolizes happiness in marriage.
  • The festival is observed during Chaitra (March-April), which is the first month of the Hindu calendar, marking the transition from winter to spring.
  • Women play a significant role in the festival by worshiping clay idols of Gan and Gauri in their homes.
  • Unmarried girls seek blessings from the deities for finding a good husband, whereas married women pray for their husband’s good health and longevity.

Navreh Festival Celebrated in Jammu & Kashmir

  • Navreh or Kashmiri New Year is the celebration of the first day of the Kashmiri new year by Kashmiri Hindus, with the largest Kashmiri Hindu community being the Kashmiri Pandits.
  • Kashmiri Pandits dedicate Navreh festival to their Goddess Sharika and pay homage to her during the festival.
  • It takes place on the first day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) on the month of Chaitra (March–April) of the Kashmiri Hindu calendar.

SBI & Standard Chartered do a CDS trade under new RBI norms

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued fresh guidelines for the instrument, State Bank of India and Standard Chartered Bank India carried out a Credit Default Swap (CDS) trade worth ₹25 crore.
  • The trade involved a 1-year rupee CDS featuring REC
  • Credit default swaps are derivative instruments that provide a form of insurance against the risk of default of the issuer of a bond.

Emkay Global Financial Services Ltd: GNPA of banks to moderate to decadal low of 2.7% in Q4

  • Emkay Global Financial Services Ltd (EGFSL) expects the overall gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio of banks under its coverage universe to moderate by 20 basis points (bps) sequentially to a decadal low of 7 per cent in Q4 FY24 (vs 2.9 per cent in Q3 FY24) owing to contained slippages and accelerated write-offs, with banks sitting on higher provisions.

GUJCOST designated as Nodal Centre for ISRO’s START programme

  • The Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST) has been designated as the Nodal Centre for the ‘Space Science and Technology Awareness Training (START)’ programme by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  • The START programme, a brainchild of ISRO, offers an introductory-level online training platform.
  • Encompassing a vast spectrum of space science research areas, including planetary exploration, astronomy, heliophysics, atmospheric science, and microgravity research.
  • This initiative promises to ignite the curiosity of aspiring scientists and engineers.
  • Under the START programme, GUJCOST will host live classes, serving as the central hub for knowledge dissemination.
  • Additionally, four Regional Science Centres located in Rajkot, Patan, Bhavnagar, and Bhuj will play a pivotal role in coordinating and facilitating the programme, thereby amplifying its reach across the region.
  • The inaugural online programme, themed “Exploration of Solar System,” is open for registrations, with the deadline set for April 19.
  • Scheduled to kick off on April 24 and continue until May 10, 2024, this programme promises to offer a comprehensive understanding of the solar system’s intricacies.

Government Extends Deadline For Green Hydrogen Research Proposals

  • The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has extended the deadline to April 27 for the submission of research proposals under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • This move comes as stakeholders requested more time to prepare and submit their proposals.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023, aims to promote the production, storage, transportation, and utilization of green hydrogen.
  • Green hydrogen is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels, as it is produced using renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power.
  • Under the research and development (R&D) scheme of the mission, the government plans to allocate ₹400 crores until the financial year 2025-26.
  • This funding is intended to support projects focused on improving the efficiency, safety, and reliability of green hydrogen technologies.
  • Following the issuance of guidelines on March 15, the Ministry issued a Call for Proposals on March 16.
  • While the response to the call has been positive, some stakeholders have requested additional time to prepare their proposals.
  • This extension aims to provide institutions with sufficient time to submit high-quality proposals for consideration under the R&D scheme.

  • Jagjit Pavadia was re-elected for a third term to the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) after garnering the highest number of votes.
  • Jagjit Pavadia was re-elected by secret ballot for the third term for five years from March 2025-2030.
  • India was also elected by acclamation to the Commission on the Status of Women for the term 2025-2029; Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund for the term 2025-2027; Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Office for Project Services for 2025-2027.
  • It was also elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women for the 2025-2027 term and the Executive Board of the World Food Programme for the 2025-2027 term.

Ranks and Indices

Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2024: India ranks third with 67 unicorns

  • According to the Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2024, India in 2023 had 67 unicorns, which is one less than 68 such startups last year.
  • The US led the list with 703 unicorns, up 37 from 2022, and followed by China with 340 unicorns.
  • UK and EU ranked No 4 and No 5 in the list, respectively.
  • The total value of the world’s unicorns have reached $5 trillion, equivalent to last year’s GDP of Japan.
  • In general, the report has found 1,453 unicorns in the world, based in 53 countries and 291 cities.
  • Around 430 unicorns saw their valuations rise, of which 171 were new faces.
  • The report noted that the top 10 unicorns were in China and the US, with both countries having four each.
  • The list is rounded off with one unicorn each from Australia and Malta.
  • The leading unicorns added $198 billion in value, accounting for 45% of the year’s overall increase in valuation among unicorns worldwide.
  • The Chinese Internet conglomerate, ByteDance, retained its status as the world’s most valuable unicorn startup with an estimated value of $220 billion.
  • Since 2019, the number of unicorns has tripled from 494 to 1453.
  • Whilst the US is leading the way with half of the world’s known unicorns, the number of countries with at least one unicorn has more than doubled from 24 to 53 and the number of cities with at least one unicorn has grown from 118 to 291.

WHO report: India second only to China in hepatitis B and C cases

  • According to the Global Hepatitis Report by World Health Organisation (WHO), India accounted for the second-highest number of cases of hepatitis B and C in 2022 after China, with 35 million infections.
  • Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can cause a range of health problems and can be fatal.
  • According to the report, 254 million people lived with hepatitis B and 50 million with hepatitis C in 2022 globally.
  • India, which was second only to China in the viral hepatitis burden, registered 8 million hepatitis B cases in 2022 while the number of hepatitis C infections stood at 5.5 million.
  • China registered 3 crore cases of hepatitis B and C, representing 27.5 per cent of the total disease burden.
  • The report said that with a total of 35 million cases, India accounted for 6 per cent of the total disease burden globally that year.

  • Mamta G. Sagar, a Bengaluru-based Kannada poet, writer, academic and activist, has recently won the World Literary Prize from the World Organization of Writers (WOW) for her contributions to the world of literature.
  • She is a facilitator at Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design, and Technology, known for her involvement in diverse forms of transdisciplinary creative writing and cultural industries, received the award at a ceremony held in Abuja, Nigeria.

  • This prestigious award, given annually, celebrates remarkable achievements in space exploration and discovery by space agencies, companies, or consortia of organizations.
  • The award ceremony took place during the Space Symposium’s annual opening ceremony in Colorado.
  • DC Manjunath, Consul General of India in Houston, accepted the award on behalf of ISRO’s Chandrayaan team.
  • The John L “Jack” Swigert Jr award commemorates astronaut John L “Jack” Swigert Jr, a pivotal figure in space exploration history.
  • Recent winners of this award include NASA, the University of Arizona OSIRIS-REx team, the teams behind the NASA JPL Mars Ingenuity Helicopter and InSight-Mars Cube One missions, as well as NASA Dawn and Cassini missions.
