Union Minister launches initiative to enhance India’s preparedness, response to animal pandemics

  • Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala launched the Animal Pandemic Preparedness Initiative and World Bank-funded Animal Health System Support for One Health to enhance India’s preparedness and response to potential animal pandemics, in line with the One Health approach.
  • The event also saw the launch of the World Bank-funded project on ‘Animal Health System Support for One Health (AHSSOH)’ that aims at creating an ecosystem for a better animal health management system using the One Health approach covering five states in India.

World’s 1st Drone Carrier, Turkey Commissions Its Largest Warship, TCG Anadolu

  • Turkey commissioned its largest warship TCG Anadolu, which is 231 metres long and 32 metres wide, can accommodate combat helicopters and military drones, as well as up to 94 vehicles, including 13 tanks.
  • The ship will be Turkey’s first aircraft carrier and the first ship in the world with an air wing made primarily of unmanned aircraft.

Tamil Nadu’s Cumbum grapes get Geographical Indication tag

  • Tamil Nadu’s famous Cumbum Panneer Thratchai, also known as Cumbum grapes.
  • The Cumbum grapes recently earned the Geographical Indication tag or GI tag.
  • The Cumbum valley located at the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu is known as the ‘Grapes city of South India’ and cultivates the Panneer Thratchai.
  • This variety which is also known as Muscat Hamburg constitutes almost 85% of the grape-growing areas in Tamil Nadu.

  • Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik inaugurates Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Millet Food Festival in Mumbai.
  • Various chefs from India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Uzbekistan have prepared various traditional cuisines using Millets for this festival.
  • The festival is organized by Ministry of Tourism.
  • Hotel Taj Mahal Palace is hosting this festival to commemorate the International Year of Millets.

J&K launches Rs 240 crores project to increase mutton production

  • The Jammu and Kashmir government has launched a project worth Rs 240 crore to increase the mutton production.
  • Currently, the UT is importing around 40 per cent from other states.

PM to dedicate Rs 14,300 crore projects in Assam

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Assam and dedicated Rs 14,300 crore development projects.
  • He dedicated the Rs 1,123 crore medical facility, the first AIIMS in the North East, to the nation and will also virtually inaugurate three medical colleges at Nalbari, Nagaon and Kokrajhar.
  • The prime minister launched the distribution of 1.1 crore Ayushman cards to enable beneficiaries to avail cashless healthcare medical treatment benefits up to Rs five lakh.
  • He also laid the foundation of the Rs 546 crore Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII), a joint initiative of the state government and IIT Guwahati.

Kolkata’s first underwater Metro starts its trial run below bed of Hooghly

  • Kolkata Metro achieved a new milestone when a Metro rake completed a journey under the bed of river Hooghly through a tunnel 32 metres below water level. 
  • Notably, the nation’s first metro was inaugurated in Kolkata in 1984, and in 2002, Delhi began offering metro services.
  • Trial runs on the 4.8km section from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade will be conducted for seven months, after which the Metro service on this route will be made available to the public.

Insurance Samadhan launches Polifyx, a one-stop solution for customers

  • Insurance Samadhan, an insurance grievance redressal platform, has launched a new app called Polifyx, a one-stop solution for policyholders facing issues related to their insurance policies.
  • The app leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, which is capable of scanning insurance policies and providing policyholders with adequate and precise information to avoid claim rejections.
  • It also offers the convenience of getting the claim form filled out along with tips and tricks for successful claim filing.
  • It offers a range of features, including portfolio analysis, know your policy, claim filing and grievance redressal, secure digital vault, insurance claim complaints and portfolio services.
  • It also provides access to its collection of videos and blogs in its YouTube channel regarding Insurance solutions called Insa Gyan.

City Union Bank launches voice biometrics for logging into mobile banking app

  • City Union Bank Limited (CUB) has launched a facility through which customers can now use Voice Biometric authentication for logging into the mobile banking app.
  • Recorded Voice and Mimicked Voice will be rejected (sic).
  • The bank mentioned that the feature of voice biometric login will shortly be extended for net banking users, the process is under development.
  • Voice biometric will be one other option for the customer to log in, apart from existing modes like User ID/PIN, face ID, fingerprint authentication, etc.
  • CUB also clarified that the customers can choose any one of these authentication options as per their convenience.

Country’s overall exports register growth of 13.84 percent in 2022-23 over 2021-22

  • The country’s overall exports are projected to scale new heights in the financial year 2022-23 registering a growth of 13.84 percent over the financial year 2021-22.
  • It is estimated to achieve $770.18 billion worth of exports in the last financial year despite the global headwinds and steady domestic demand.
  • India’s overall export was over $676 billion in the fiscal year 2021-22.    
  • According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, merchandise exports have registered the highest ever annual exports of over $447 billion with over six percent growth during the financial year 2022-23.
  • The Ministry said, services exports lead the overall export growth and are projected to set a new record worth of $322.72 billion with a growth rate of 26.79 percent during the last financial year.

Garuda Aerospace Receives Agri Drone Subsidy

  • Made in India Drone Startup Garuda Aerospace, has become the first company to receive Agri Drone Subsidy for their agricultural drones.
  • This subsidy is part of the Indian government’s efforts to promote the use of agricultural drones.
  • Garuda Kisan Drones were given to 8 farmers under the Agri-drone subsidy at an event held in Pune.

SECI awarded with ‘Miniratna Category-I’ status

  • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) notified that the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) has been accorded with the status of Miniratna Category-I Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE).
  • Incorporated in the year 2011, SECI is the primary implementing agency of the MNRE for renewable energy schemes or projects towards fulfilment of India’s international commitments.
  • As of now, SECI has awarded renewable energy project capacities of over 56 GW.

  • The jury for the awards was chaired by Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman, RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group.

  • TV Narendran, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Steel Ltd was honoured with AIMA JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award.

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Information & Broadcasting Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurated sports facilities at the SAI National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) at Anu in Hamirpur, district.
  • The Sports Authority of India NCOE Hamirpur has installed and operationalized badminton court mats with flooring along with boxing hall and judo hall.
  • He said that under the Khelo India campaign, an amount of about 3,200 crore rupees will be spent on sports facilities during 5 years.

  • His birthday is also referred to as ‘Equality Day’ by some in India.

World Chagas Disease Day

  • World Chagas Disease Day is observed on April 14 to raise awareness around Chagas disease.
  • It was first celebrated on April 14, 2020, and was named after Carlos Ribeiro Justiniano Chagas, the Brazilian doctor who diagnosed the first case on April 14, 1909.
  • World Chagas Disease Day was approved for creation on May 24, 2019, at the 72nd session of the World Health Assembly, and officially created at the WHA plenary on May 28, 2019.
  • World Chagas Disease Day is one of 11 official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Tuberculosis Day, World Health Day, World Malaria Day, World Immunization Week, World No Tobacco Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Hepatitis Day, World Patient Safety Day, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week and World AIDS Day.
  • Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted to animals and people by insect vectors.

Siachen Day

  • Siachen Day is annually observed on April 13 by Indian Army.
  • The day is observed to commemorate the courage of the Indian Army under “Operation Meghdoot” on April 13 1984.
  • The 39th Siachen Day was celebrated by the Indian Army with traditional solemnity and reverence at the world’s highest battlefield.
