Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Minister, Shri Amit Shah launched IFFCO Nano DAP (Liquid) in New Delhi

  • Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah launched IFFCO Nano DAP (Liquid) at New Delhi.
  • The launch of IFFCO Nano DAP (Liquid) product is an important beginning to make India self-reliant in the field of fertilizers.
  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had given approval to Nano Urea in February, 2021, and in 2023 the infrastructure to make about 17 crore Nano Urea bottles has been built up in the country.
  • Marketing of Nano Urea started in August, 2021 and about 6.3 crore bottles have been produced till March, 2023, the effect of one bottle of 500 ml on the crop is equivalent to that of 45 kg bag of granular urea.
  • He said that IFFCO has registered a patent, under which IFFCO will get 20% royalty on the sale of Liquid Urea and Liquid DAP anywhere in the world for 20 years which is revolutionary step.

G20 Session

  • The third Education Working Group meeting under G20 kicked off in Bhubaneswar, Odisha with a seminar on ‘Building Capacities for Lifelong Learning in the context of Future of Work’ at CSIR-IMMT.
  • Over 60 delegates from G20 member countries, invitee countries and International Organisation countries are participating in the 3 days meeting.
  • The 2nd Y20 Pre-Summit under India’s G20 Presidency held at Ladakh.
  • It brings together over 100 delegates from 30 countries to discuss issues concerning the youth of the world.
  • The meeting will focus on five Y20 themes, including climate change, peace-building, and health.

Cabinet Committee

  • The Union Government had approved the establishment of 157 new government nursing colleges at a cost of 1570 crores in co-location with existing medical colleges in the country.
  • An amount of 10 crore rupees will be provided for setting up each nursing college.
  • Also approved National Medical Devices Policy 2023 with an aim to increase domestic production and reduce imports of such equipment.
  • The policy is expected to help the medical devices sector grow from the present $11 billion to $50 billion in the next five years.
  • The government has already initiated the implementation of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for medical devices and extended support for setting up 4 medical device parks in Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Under the PLI scheme for medical devices, till now, a total of 26 projects have been approved with a committed investment of Rs 1,206 crore, and out of this, so far, an investment of Rs 714 crore has been achieved.

  • The ‘Study in India Pavilion’ at the Global Education & Training Exhibition (GETEX) in Dubai has been inaugurated by the Consul General of India in Dubai, Dr. Aman Puri.
  • Organized by the Services Export Promotion Council with the support of the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, the India Pavilion at GETEX 2023 is being held at Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai, UAE.
  • The pavilion, spanning over 200 sqm, features more than 30 universities and edtech stakeholders of Indian higher education.
  • The Global Education & Training Exhibition (GETEX), a leading education fair in the region for over 30 years, provides an efficient platform for educational institutions to meet their enrollment quotas and admission targets.

India, European Free Trade Association States meet to boost economic partnership

  • India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland), including Norway and Switzerland, gathered in New Delhi to boost bilateral trade and economic partnership.
  • They discussed the prospects of resuming their negotiations towards a Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).

  • WYLD, a social currency payment card has launched in Mumbai.
  • Powered by Visa, the platform will allow everyday social media users to leverage their Instagram to earn massive cashback on daily spending.
  • The platform is currently invite-only, and open to the first 5,000 users on their waitlist of 10,000 potential customers, for their beta-testing phase.

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited now a Navratana

  • Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has now been promoted to ‘Navratna’ category of Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSE) from Category-I Miniratna.
  • This means the company will have more autonomy in terms of investment, setting up joint venture and other financial decisions.
  • Chennai Metro Rail Ltd signed a contract agreement worth ₹1,134 crores with Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd for the construction of an elevated viaduct for CMRL Phase-II.
  • The contract is part of Asian Development Bank funding for Phase-II under the loan agreement.

  • Australian will host the third in-person Quad Summit on May 24 in Sydney.
  • It will be attended by US President Joe Biden, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD), commonly known as the Quad is a strategic security dialogue between Australia, India, Japan and the United States that is maintained by talks between member countries.
  • The dialogue was initiated in 2007 by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with the support of Australian Prime Minister John Howard, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney.

‘City Beauty Competition’ portal launched by Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry

  • The ‘City Beauty Competition’ portal, launched by the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry recently, has been made live.
  • Urban Local Bodies across the country can participate in the competition through an online process at www.citybeautycompetition.in.
  • The objective of the competition is to encourage and recognize the transformational efforts made by cities and wards across the country to create beautiful, innovative and inclusive public spaces.
  • The Ministry said, under the competition, wards and public spaces in cities would be judged against five broad pillars like- Accessibility, Amenities, Activities, Aesthetics and Ecology.
  • The competition would felicitate the most beautiful wards and public spaces in the cities.
  • While selected wards would be felicitated at the city and State levels, the top most beautiful public spaces in the cities under four categories.
  • The last date for participating in the Competition is 15th July of this year.

  • The Reserve Bank of India had re-appointment of N Kamakodi as Managing Director and CEO of private sector bank City Union Bank for a period of three years with effect from May 1, 2023.

Pankaj Singh elected Cycling Federation of India president unopposed

  • Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of the Noida district from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Pankaj Singh was elected unopposed as the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) president in the Annual General Body & Election meeting that was conducted at State Guest House in Nainital.
  • Maninder Pal Singh was elected for the Secretary-General post for the second straight term, while Sudeesh Kumar of Kerala was selected as the Treasurer.
  • The election happened for the 2023-2027 term, as 26 states and boards affiliated with the CFI partook in the AGM.
  • Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Kerala, and Telangana got a couple of members elected in the Executive Council, while a member each was selected from Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Bihar, Tamilnadu, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh & Andaman & Nicobar.

World Bank's Logistics Performance Index

  • The Logistics Performance Index (LPI) is an interactive benchmarking tool created to help countries identify the challenges and opportunities they face in their performance on trade logistics and what they can do to improve their performance.
  • India jumps 6 places to rank 38 out of 139 countries in the 7th edition of the Logistics Performance Index (LPI 2023) of the World Bank.
  • On 4 out of 6 LPI indicators, India has registered a remarkable improvement because of various initiatives being implemented.
  • In 2014, India was ranked 54th.
  • It climbed 16 places from 2014 to 2022.
  • The government gave the credit to its PM GatiShakti National Master Plan launched in October 2021.
  • Apart from this, the Ministry said that the National Logistics Policy (NLP) — which acts as a guiding document for States or UTs seeking to formulate logistics policy — helped improve India’s ranking.
  • Adding more, the Ministry said that NICDC’s Logistics Data Bank project — applying radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to containers — and its implementation since 2016 on the Western part of India and scaling up to Pan India level in 2020 has been significant improvement in cross-border trade facilitation.
  • The Commerce Ministry even noted that initiatives like Sagarmala and Bharatmala have played a pivotal role in improving India’s logistics efficiency.

  • The report was released by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman K. Bery in the presence of Member (Health) Dr. V.K. Paul, Member (Agriculture) Dr. Ramesh Chand and CEO B. V. R. Subrahmanyam.
  • The report presents a set of good and innovative practices adopted by states governments and organizations in various aspects of millet value- chain especially production, processing and consumption.
  • The report in three themes i.e. (a) State Missions and initiatives to promote millets; (b) Inclusion of millets in ICDS; (c) Research and development and use of technology for innovative practices.
  • The report will serve as a guiding repository to revive and mainstream millets in our diets.

  • Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) Uttar Pradesh had been awarded the country’s prestigious HUDCO Award (2022-2023).
  • The award was presented by Manoj Joshi, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, to State Mission Director, Uttar Pradesh Neha Sharma during the program organized on the 53rd Foundation Day of Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) in New Delhi.
  • This award has been given in the Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment 2022-23 category for cleanliness.
  • Rs 1 lakh was also given to the UP government as part of the award.

Dalai Lama got 1959 Ramon Magsaysay Award in person after 64 years

  • Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation president Susanna B Afan and Foundation Trustee Emily A Abrera met with the Dalai Lama, the Nobel Peace laureate, to personally present the 1959 Ramon Magsaysay Award after 64 years.
  • According to the Tibetan spiritual leader’s office, his elder brother Gyalo Thonden had received the Magsaysay Award on his behalf in Manila, the Philippines in August 1959.
  • The Ramon Magsaysay Award, often called the “Nobel Prize of Asia”, is an annual award established to perpetuate former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay’s example of integrity in governance, courageous service to the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society.
  • The prize was established in April 1957 by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund based in New York City with the concurrence of the Philippine government.

Obituary

Legendary boxer Kaur Singh Passed Away

  • Veteran heavyweight boxer Kaur Singh, a Padma Shri and Arjuna awardee and a former Olympian, passed away at 74.
  • He was awarded the Sena Medal and Vishisht Sena Medal for his contributions in Indo-Pak war from the Barner sector of Rajasthan.
  • In 1979, he debuted at the senior national boxing championship where he won a gold.
  • In 1980, he won the gold at the Asian boxing championships held in Mumbai.
  • In 1982, Singh became a national hero when he won the gold medal at the Asian Games in New Delhi.,
  • He was presented with the Arjuna Award in 1982 and the Padma Shri in 1983.
  • Interestingly, Singh once faced off with American legend Muhammad Ali in a four-round exhibition match held in New Delhi in 1980 – the only Indian boxer to face Ali.

  • International Girls in ICT Day is an annual event celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April to encourage and empower girls and young women to explore and pursue careers in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
  • This year, it is being observed on April 27 with the theme “Digital Skills for Life”.
  • International Girls in ICT Day was declared by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on April 8, 2011, to encourage women to pursue careers in information and communication technologies.

India world's fourth largest defence spender in 2022

  • India was the world’s fourth largest military spender in 2022, with its defence spending increasing by around six percent as compared to 2021, a report by Swedish think tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
  • India’s defence spending has increased by around six per cent, making it the world’s fourth largest military spender in 2022, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
  • Around 23 per cent of India’s total military spending is being used to fund equipment and infrastructure along its border with China where tensions continue.
  • With military expenditure of USD 81.4 billion (one billion=100 crore), India’s spending was up by six per cent from 2021 and by 47 per cent as compared 2013.
