NTIPRIT holds workshop on “5G Use Case Labs: Awareness and Pre-Commissioning Readiness” at IIT Roorkee

  • Gunjan Dave, Member (Technology), Department of Telecommunications inaugurated two-day workshop on “5G Use Case Labs: Awareness and Pre-Commissioning Readiness” at IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand.
  • The workshop was organised by the National Telecommunications Institute for Policy Research, Innovation and Training (NTIPRIT), DoT, Ghaziabad.
  • The workshop aimed at generating awareness about 5G technology use cases and the 5G Use Case Labs being set up across India especially focusing on North Zone institutions including IIT Roorkee, with funding from DoT.

  • The President of India Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the 37th Surajkund International Crafts Mela at Surajkund, Haryana.

Prime Minister laid Foundation Stone of Talabira Thermal Power Project in Odisha

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for NLC India Limited’s (NLCIL) Supercritical Thermal power plant in Sambalpur, Odisha.
  • The foundation stone for the Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL) Talabira Thermal power project, valued at over ₹27,000 Crore, will be laid, perfectly aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • The project encompasses a 2,400-MW capacity in its initial phase and plans for an additional 800 MW in the second phase with an investment of over ₹8,000 crores.
  • The phase 1 of the project is scheduled to be completed by 2028-29.
  • NLCIL has been allotted Talabira coal mines with total reserves of 553 million tonne (MT) with 23 MT Peak rated capacity.
  • On getting operational, this pit-head plant will generate electricity at a cost of ₹3.65 per unit (₹2.40 fixed cost and ₹1.25 variable cost) (approx.) which is amongst the cheapest power produced by TPPs in the country.”

Development Projects inaugurated by Prime Minister

  • The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth ₹11,000 crores in Guwahati, Assam.
  • He also laid the foundation stone for projects worth more than ₹68,000 crore in Sambalpur, Odisha aimed at boosting the energy sector involving natural gas, coal and power generation apart from important projects of road, railway and higher education sector.

7th session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs held at Kochi

  • The 7th session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) was held at Kochi, Kerala.
  • After the Covid-19 pandemic, CCSCH7 was the first session of this committee to be conducted physically.
  • 109 delegates from 31 countries attended the session.
  • In this session, quality standards for 5 spices, namely small cardamom, turmeric, juniper berry, allpice and star anise were finalised.
  • CCSCH has forwarded these five standards to the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) recommending for adoption at final Step 8 as full-fledged Codex standards.
  • The next meeting of the Committee will be conducted after a period of 18 months.
  • The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), jointly established by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO), is an international, intergovernmental body with membership of over 194 countries, which is based in Rome and is tasked with formulating internationally accepted standards pertaining to human food.
  • The CAC conducts its work through various Codex committees, including the CCSCH, hosted by different member countries.
  • The Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) was established as one of the Commodity Committees under the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) in 2013.
  • India hosts this prestigious Committee since the beginning and Spices Board India serves as the Secretariat organization which organizes the Committee’s sessions.

Schemes

Subsidy amounting to ₹5790 crores given to electric vehicle manufacturers on sale of 13,41,459 number of electric vehicles under phase-II of FAME India Scheme

  • The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) sanctioned 2,877 electric vehicle charging stations in 68 cities across 25 States/UTs.
  • Out of these charging stations, 148 Electric Vehicle charging stations are constructed and operational.
  • Ministry of Heavy Industries has also sanctioned ₹800 Crores as capital subsidy to the three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) for establishment of 7,432 electric vehicle public charging stations.
  • Under phase-II of FAME India Scheme, subsidy amounting to ₹5790 crores has been given to electric vehicle manufacturers on sale of 13,41,459 number of electric vehicles as on January 31 2024 (as per details given below for electric vehicles claimed on FAME-II Portal as on January 30 2024).
  • Further, MHI sanctioned 6,862 electric buses to various cities/STUs/State Govt. entities for intracity operations.
  • Out of 6,862 e-buses, 3487 e-buses have been supplied to STUs as on November 21 2023.

IRDAI mandates AYUSH options in health covers from April 1

  • Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI) has set April 1 2024 as deadline for insurers to include AYUSH treatment under health covers.
  • The regulator wanted the insurers to have a board approved policy on AYUSH coverage to enable policyholders to choose a treatment of their choice.
  • The policy ought to contain the quality parameters as well as procedure for enrolling AYUSH hospitals/day care centres as network providers for the purpose of providing cashless facility.
  • Separately, it stressed the need for insurers to have adequate controls as well as standard operating procedures (SOP) with regard to enrolling hospitals, necessary clauses in health services agreements with the facilities, standard treatment protocols as well as dealing with possible frauds and abuse of the system, if any.

Agreements and MoUs signed

National Rural Livelihood Promotion Society signed MoU with BRAC International for economic inclusion and social protection for the poorest of the poor women

  • National Rural Livelihood Promotion Society (NRLPS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) signed an MOU with BRAC International, a Global South-led organisation with a mission to empower people and communities.
  • The MoU has been signed for inclusion of the poorest of the poor under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), a flagship programme under MoRD.
  • The programme will introduce holistic productive inclusion strategies to improve the lives of excluded populations. It will adapt a globally tested and proven “Graduation approach” to the DAY-NRLM programme to reach those households that are presently having difficulty benefiting from the SHG net.
  • Founded in Bangladesh in 1972, BRAC now works in 17 countries and has partnered with over 100 million people, delivering cost-effective, evidence-backed interventions.
  • One such intervention is the globally recognised “Graduation approach” that has been taken up by private organisations and governments and evaluated extensively with positive results.

GHAR Portal for Restoration and Repatriation of Child launched by NCPCR

  • National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had developed and launched a portal named GHAR – GO Home and Re-Unite (Portal for Restoration and Repatriation of Child).
  • The GHAR portal has been developed to digitally monitor and track the restoration and repatriation of children as per the protocols under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and Rules thereof.
  • The salient features of the portal are
  • Digital tracking and monitoring of children who are in the Juvenile Justice system and have to be repatriated to another Country/State/District.
  • Digital transfer of cases of children to the concerned Juvenile Justice Board/Child Welfare Committee of the State for speedy repatriation of children.
  • Where there is a requirement of a translator/interpreter/expert, request to be made to the concerned State Government.
  • Child Welfare Committees and District Child Protection Officers can ensure proper restoration and rehabilitation of children by digitally monitoring the progress of the case of the child.
  • A checklist format will be provided in the forms so that the children who are hard to repatriate or children who are not getting their entitled compensation or other monetary benefits can be identified.
  • List of Government implemented schemes are provided, so that at the time of restoration the Child Welfare Committees can link the child with the schemes to strengthen the family and ensure that child remains with his/her family.

Ministry of Women and Child Development developed the “Track Child Portal”

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development developed the “Track Child Portal”, which enables tracking of the missing and found children in all States/UTs including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, North Eastern States and Jharkhand.
  • The Track Child portal is implemented with support and involvement of various stakeholders namely Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Railways, State Governments/ UT Administrations, Child Welfare Committees, Juvenile Justice Boards, National Legal Services Authority, etc.
  • Standard operating procedure have been issued for the “TrackChild” Portal.
  • Advisories have also been issued to all States and UTs including Director General of Police of all States & UTs and other stakeholders regarding implementation of TrackChild portal.
  • The TrackChild portal is also integrated with the CCTNS or Crime and Criminal Tracking & Network Systems of the Ministry of Home Affairs, which allows interoperability in terms of matching of F.I.R’s of missing children with database of TrackChild to trace and match missing children by the concerned State/UT police.
  • One component of TrackChild Portal has “Khoya-Paya” where any citizen can report for any missing or sighted children.

Sarbananda Sonowal launches Maritime Single Window and MMD Modules in SagarSetu (NLP-Marine)

  • Union Minister for the Ports, Shipping & Waterways and AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal, launched two digital modules within the SagarSetu (NLP-Marine) platform.
  • These pioneering modules, namely the Maritime Single Window (MSW) and the Mercantile Maritime Department (MMD).
  • With the launch of the Maritime Single Window (MSW) module of SagarSetu (NLP-Marine), MoPSW aligns with global standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
  • The implementation of the MSW system through SagarSetu (NLP-M) adheres to the processes mandated by the FAL Convention of International Maritime Organization (IMO), promoting harmonization and standardization of processes set by the IMO.
  • The Maritime Single Window (MSW)Module in SagarSetu (NLP-M) is a cutting-edge digital platform designed to revolutionize the exchange of maritime-related information and documents, emphasizing harmonization and standardization for efficient data submission.
  • The Mercantile Marine Department (MMD)Module within SagarSetu’s NLP(M) encompasses two core functionalities in the Maritime Mobile Domain process.
  • Firstly, the Vessel Detention function allows MMD officials to efficiently monitor the status of ships at ports, facilitating the planning of vessel inspections.
  • Secondly, the Vessel Release functionality comes into play after a re-inspection process.
  • MMD officials use this feature to update the release status of the vessel, signaling its readiness to depart the port.
  • Similar to the detention process, notifications of vessel releases are sent to Ports, Customs, and Immigration.
  • These authorities then take appropriate actions, ensuring that ships are allowed to sail based on the current real-time status of the vessel.
  • The comprehensive capabilities of the MMD module in Sagarsetu streamline vessel monitoring, inspection, and release processes, enhancing efficiency and coordination in maritime operations.
  • Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) in India is a government body under the Directorate General of Shipping of Ministry of Ports, Waterways & Shipping.
  • Launched in April 2023, the ‘SAGAR-SETU’ mobile app, an extension of NLP-Marine, offers real-time information on vessels, gate details, container freight stations, and transactions.
  • It streamlines import and export clearances by enabling digital payments for associated charges like shipping fees, transportation costs, and container freight station fees.

Tamil Nadu gets its 18th wildlife sanctuary in the reserve forests of Erode district

  • The Tamil Nadu government has declared 80,114.80 hectares of reserve forests in Bargur Hills in Erode district, as the Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • This stretch of protected forests, links the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve with Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary, and has been notified as the 18th wildlife sanctuary in the State.
  • This region is part of the corridor that connects the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) to the Male Mahadeshwara Hills Tiger Reserve and the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, and plays a crucial role in maintaining a viable tiger population.
  • It is one of the tiger corridors identified by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, and is home to a number of tigers.
  • The region is also part of the Nilgiris Elephant Reserve and is home to a healthy population of large herbivores including elephants and the Indian Gaur.
  • Also, the landscape is the catchment of the Palar River that drains into the Cauvery River and is a crucial source of water for agricultural activities.

  • INS Sandhayak (Yard 3025), the first Survey Vessel Large (SVL) ship, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in the presence of Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh at an impressive ceremony held at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.
