Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik inaugurates 4th National Chilika Birds Festival

  • Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the 4th National Chilika Birds Festival at an event coordinated by the department of tourism, department of forest, and Chilika Development Authority.
  • The three-day program, has seen the participation of 52 selected birders from various parts of India.
  • National Bird Festival, Chilika is timed to revel in the glory of 10 lakhs birds of 200 species at Mangalajodi during the winters in Odisha.
  • Mangalajodi, situated in the North Eastern Part of Chilika, the largest brackish water lake of Asia, is known as the “Birds Paradise of Asia”.

4th Organic Orange Festival Held in Rüsoma Village, Nagaland

  • The 4th edition of the two-day Organic Orange Festival was held in Rüsoma Village, Nagaland, with the intention of encouraging rural farmers to promote organic products and the opportunity for income generation.
  • Rüsoma Village, also known as the ‘Gardening village’ is located in the Capital of Nagaland, Kohima.
  • The villagers of Rüsoma have a total of 14,100 standing fruit-bearing orange trees and 28,700 saplings under plantation.
  • Rüsoma village is included under the ‘Horti Model Village’ 2025 to boost horticultural developmental activities in a holistic manner.

Schemes

Odisha launches LABHA scheme

  • The Odisha government announced the launch of LABHA (‘Laghu Bana Jatya Drabya Kraya’) Yojana a 100% State-funded minimum support price (MSP) scheme for minor forest produce (MFP).
  • The new scheme may help the government make further inroads into tribal pockets and forest fringe areas.
  • From now on, the MSP of MFP will be determined every year by the State government.
  • Under the scheme, a primary collector (a tribal person) will be able to sell the MFP, collected at the procurement centres by the Tribal Development Cooperative Corporation Limited of Odisha (TDCCOL), at the MSP.
  • Though the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Federation of India fixes the MSP for MFP, the benefits had not been reaching the beneficiaries in Odisha for several years.
  • Minor Forest Produce (MFP) is all non-timber forest produce of plant origin and includes bamboo, brushwood, stumps, canes, Tusser, cocoon, honey, waxes, Lac, tendu/kendu leaves, medicinal plants and herbs, roots, tuber and the like.

Bank of Baroda’s arm rebranded as ‘BOBCARD Limited’ with ‘Credit Reimagined’ tagline

  • Bank of Baroda’s wholly-owned subsidiary for cards, ‘BOB Financial Solutions Limited’, has been rebranded as ‘BOBCARD Limited’ with the tagline “Credit Reimagined”.
  • Accordingly, the NBFC has also unveiled a new logo called ‘Baroda Sun’, which comprises dual ‘B’ letterforms that hold the rays of the rising sun.
  • The rebranding embodies “revitalised commitment to reimagine the country’s credit landscape with excellent credit solutions and customer-centric offerings”.
  • It aims to offer customer-centric, solution-driven assistance that assures service through innovation.

Stripe Gets Final RBI Nod for Payment Aggregator Business

  • Global digital payments startup Stripe’s Indian arm has got final approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as an online payment aggregator.
  • Founded in 2010, San-Francisco-based Stripe grew from a single tool, code for developers to enable credit card payments on their site, to a large suite of billing, tax and other fintech tools.
  • As per the latest RBI data, 11 companies, in total, have received final approval from the RBI to operate as online payment aggregator.
  • Introduced by the RBI in March 2020, the payment aggregator framework requires all payment gateway operators to obtain a license for acquiring merchants and implementing digital payment solutions.
  • Payment aggregators (PAs) facilitate merchants and ecommerce platforms in accepting payments by providing their technological infrastructure for streamlined online transactions.
  • However, the licensing process, initiated three years ago, became a challenging procedure for many payment solution providers.
  • Earlier Zomato wholly-owned subsidiary Zomato Payment Pvt Ltd (ZPPL), Tata Group’s digital payments arm, Tata Payments, and Groww-backed identity verification startup, DigiO, have received payment aggregator (PA) licences from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Finance Ministry says economy likely to grow closer to 7% in 2024-25

  • Ahead of the Interim Union Budget, the Finance Ministry in a report pegged India’s real GDP growth at closer to 7% in 2024-25 with ‘considerable scope’ to outpace 7% by 2030, adding that the economy will hit $5 trillion in the next three years, making it the third largest in the world.

Agreements and MoUs signed

NGEL signs MoU with Government of Maharashtra for development of Green Hydrogen Projects

  • NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Government of Maharashtra for development of Green Hydrogen and derivatives (Green Ammonia, Green Methanol) of up to 1 million Ton capacity per annum, including Pumped Storage Projects of 2 GW and development of renewable energy projects with or without storage up to 5 GW in the state.
  • The MoU has been signed as a part of Government of Maharashtra’s Green Investment Plan for the next five years.
  • The agreement envisages a potential investment of approximately ₹80,000 crores.
  • NTPC is in the path of building renewable energy capacity of 60 GW by 2032.
  • NGEL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC and aims to be the flag bearer of NTPC’s Renewable Energy journey with an operational capacity of over 3.4 GW and 26 GW in pipeline including 7 GW under implementation.

Ministry of Jal Shakti signed MoU with Madhya Pradesh & Rajasthan

  • Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with government of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh for implementation of the “Modified Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal-ERCP (PKC-ERCP) Link Project” (integration of original PKC with Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project of Rajasthan), which is the second project under the national perspective plan of interlinking of rivers (ILR) program of Government of India.
  • This link project proposes to provide drinking and industrial water in 13 districts of eastern Rajasthan, Malwa and Chambal regions of Madhya Pradesh apart from providing irrigation in 2.8 lakh ha. area (or more) each in both the states (total of 5.6 lakh ha or more) including supplementation of enroute tanks in the states.
  • The Modified PKC link project will help in utilizing the available water resources of Chambal basin optimally and economically.
  • The various components of Modified PKC link including areas of benefit shall be firmed up at DPR stage in consultation with both the states.

Wabag signs MoU with PEAK to set up 100 bio-CNG plants

  • VA Tech Wabag Ltd. (Wabag) has entered into an MoU with Peak Sustainability Ventures (PEAK) to establish 100 bio-CNG plants at sewage treatment facilities across India and other mutually agreed-upon locations in the GCC, Africa and European countries.
  • The parties aim to harness the unutilised potential of sewage treatment plants and generate bio-CNG which can be used for mobility application in trucks and heavy duty vehicles, and for industrial applications, thereby reducing the need for fossil fuels, the Chennai-based water treatment firm said in a statement.
  • The business potential for the establishment of 100 bio-CNG plants is expected to be over $200 million and this collaboration aims to generate over 73 million kg of bio-CNG per annum.
  • Wabag is already producing more than 40 MWh of green energy through its various installed plants.

CMFRI to develop lab-grown fish meat for the first time in India

  • An Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institute has signed a first-of-its-kind agreement in India with a start-up to develop lab-grown fish meat.
  • The Kochi-based Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has entered into a collaborative research agreement with Neat Meatt Biotech, a start-up working on cultivated meat.
  • Lab-grown fish meat is an area of research in several countries including Israel, US, Singapore and Korea, but none have commercialised it yet.

Piramal Enterprises sells 20% in Shriram Investment for ₹1,440 crore

  • Piramal Enterprises has sold its entire investment of 20 per cent in Shriram Investment Holdings Private (formerly known as Shriram Investment Holdings) to Shriram Ownership Trust (SOT) for a consideration of ₹1,440 crores.

Louis Vuitton's Bernard Arnault overtakes Elon Musk as world's richest man

  • According to Forbes real-time billionaires list Bernard Arnault, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of luxury brand LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE, has surpassed Tesla CEO Elon Musk to become the world’s richest person.
  • Currently, Arnault has a net worth of $207.6 billion, higher than Musk’s $204.7 billion.
  • According to the list, Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and chairman, is the world’s third richest person, with a net worth of $181.3 billion.

Indian Lawyer Gets Prestigious "Freedom of the City of London" Award

  • An India born prolific lawyer, Ajit Mishra, has been conferred with “Freedom of the City of London Award” at Guildhall for his outstanding contribution in legal and public life.
  • Ajit Mishra is Founder and Chair of UK India Legal Partnership (UKILP).
  • He is a dual qualified lawyer and corporate partner at Knights.
  • His nomination for the ‘Freedom of the City’ award came from Chris Hayward, the esteemed City of London Corporation’s Policy Chairman, and Shravan Joshi, Deputy Chair of the civil affairs committee.
  • The award, given by the City of London Corporation, dates back to the 13th century and is bestowed upon individuals who make an outstanding contribution to London and public life.

NTPC Limited gets certified as a Top Employer 2024 in India by the Top Employers Institute

  • The 2024 Top Employers of the Top Employers Institute have been announced and NTPC Limited has been certified as a Top Employer in India by the institute.
  • NTPC completed the following steps in order to qualify for the certification: HR Best Practice Survey, Validation and Audit.
  • NTPC’s performance score was rated against an international standard and NTPC has achieved Top Employer status.
  • The HR Best Practice Survey covers six HR domains consisting of 20 topics including People Strategy, Work Environment, Talent Acquisition, Learning, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Wellbeing and more.
  • The survey is based on an international standard; so, participants are measured against globally applicable best practice.
  • The process involved various stages of validation and rigorous assessment.
  • Participants must successfully complete the various stages in the Certification Process and achieve the required score for certification as an official Top Employer.

Obituary

Hockey Olympian Sukhbir Singh Gill passed away

  • Sukhbir Singh Gill, Chandigarh’s first hockey Olympian passed away at 48.
  • He had represented India at the Sydney Olympics (2000), the Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur (2002), and the FIH Champions Trophy in Cologne (Germany) in 2002, bringing Chandigarh on the international map.

Asian Games medallist Roshibina named female wushu player of year

  • Two-time Asian Games medallist Naorem Roshibina Devi was named International Wushu Federation’s (IWUF) female athlete of the year in sanda category.
  • The 23-year-old Roshibina, who won a bronze and a silver in the 2018 and 2022 Asian Games, polled 93545 votes to beat Shahrbano Mansouriyan Semiromi (88179) of Iran and Wu Xiaowei (46753) of China.
  • She also won a bronze medal in the 2016 World Junior Wushu Championships.
  • And was conferred with the Arjuna Award this year.

ICF sportsperson wins Australian Grand Slam in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing category

  • Prithvi Sekhar, who works as an Accounts Clerk at Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, has won the singles title at the Australian Grand Slam Tennis Championship in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing category.
  • He came as a runner-up in the doubles.
  • He had brought laurels to the country on earlier occasions by winning silver in Men’s doubles and bronze in Men’s singles & mixed doubles in the Deaf Olympics Tennis championship held at Caxias Do Sol (Brazil) in 2022.
  • He was also a member of the Indian Railways team that won the World Railways Championships – 2023.

World Leprosy Day 2024

  • World Leprosy Day (WLD) is annually celebrated on the last Sunday of January.
  • This year the day falls on January 28.
  • The aim of observing the World Leprosy Day is to create awareness against the stigma attached to the disease, by making the general community aware that it is a disease spread by a type of bacteria and it can be easily cured.
  • In India it is celebrated on January 30.
  • This date was chosen by French humanitarian, Raoul Follereau as a tribute to the life of Mahatma Gandhi, who did much work with persons affected by leprosy and died at the end of January in 1948.
  • Leprosy is an age-old disease and is described in the literature of ancient civilizations.
  • It is a chronic infectious disease which is caused by a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae.
  • The disease affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, and the eyes.

Indian Newspaper Day 2024

  • Indian Newspaper Day is annually observed on January 29.
  • The day commemorate the birth of the country’s first-ever printed newspaper.
  • It was the English weekly titled ‘Hicky’s Bengal Gazette’, started by an Irishman on January 29, 1780.
  • This day aims at promoting newspapers and encouraging people to pick up the newspaper and read it every day.
  • The first newspaper in India was the Bengal Gazette introduced by James Augustus Hickey.
  • The newspaper was also known as the Calcutta General Advertiser, in 1780.

Martyrs' Day 2024

  • Martyrs’ Day, or Shaheed Diwas, is annually observed on January 30.
  • This year observes 76th
  • The day is dedicated to pay homage to the courageous soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their motherland.
  • The day also commemorates the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948.

India-Saudi Arabia Joint Military Exercise ‘SADA TANSEEQ’ commenced at Rajasthan

  • The inaugural edition of 13-days India-Saudi Arabia Joint Military Exercise ‘SADA TANSEEQ’ commenced at Mahajan, Rajasthan.
  • The Saudi Arabian contingent comprising 45 personnel is being represented by Royal Saudi Land Forces.
  • The Indian Army contingent also comprising 45 personnel is being represented by a Battalion from the Brigade of the Guards (Mechanised Infantry).
  • Aim of the Exercise is to train troops of both sides for Joint Operations in Semi Desert terrain under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
  • The Exercise will enable both the sides to share their best practices in the tactics, techniques and procedures of conducting operations in sub-conventional domain.
  • It will facilitate developing interoperability, bonhomie and camaraderie between troops from both the sides.
  • The Exercise will involve Establishment of Mobile Vehicle Check Post, Cordon & Search Operation, House Intervention Drill, Reflex Shooting, Slithering and Sniper Firing.
  • The Exercise will provide an opportunity to both the contingents to strengthen their bond.
  • It will act as a platform to achieve shared security objectives, enhance the level of defence cooperation and foster bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.

INS Nirupak decommissioned at Visakhapatnam after 38 years of service

  • The Indian Navy’s indigenously designed and built survey ship, INS Nirupak, was decommissioned after 38 years of service to the nation in a ceremony presided over by Vice Admiral Adhir Arora, Chief Hydrographer to the Government of India at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.
  • The ship, the third of its class, was launched on June 4, 1981, at GRSE and commissioned into service on August 14, 1985, by Vice Admiral Jayant Ganpat Nadkarni, then Chief of Naval Staff.
  • The ship is based at Visakhapatnam under the administrative and operational control of Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
  • In recognition of its relentless dedication to the field of hydrography, INS Nirupak was awarded the Admiral Jal Cursetji Rolling Trophy for best survey ship in the years 1994, 1995, 2005 and 2009.
  • It was actively engaged in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, including Operation Gambhir (Tsunami Relief) in 2004.

Army Design Bureau working on 350 projects worth ₹1.8 lakh crore

  • The Army Design Bureau (ADB) is looking at close to 350 design and development as well as research and development projects with the help of about 450 industries, including the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which will involve a cost of about ₹1.8 lakh crore.
  • Army Design Bureau was established on August 31 2016, the during an Army Seminar on Make Projects co-hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi.
