National News

63rd Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) Meeting held in Bhopal

  • The 63rd Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting was held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The meeting was held under the Chairmanship of L. Kantha Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Mines.
  • The proposed Annual Programme for ensuing Field Season year 2024-25 was placed before the Board for discussion.
  • During the ensuing year 2024-25 GSI has formulated about 1055 scientific programs for the year 2024-25, which includes 392 Mineral Development projects (G2; G3; G4; and Offshore Explorations) that has the potential to generate auctionable mineral blocks in near future.
  • 133 projects with mineral bias or Mineral Discovery Projects (RMT; Research Project; C-MAP; GT; MPA; Multispectral/Hyperspectral projects) having potential for generating promising areas for future exploration in G4 stage.
  • Within the exploration activity, the major thrust has been given on the exploration of strategic & critical and fertilizer minerals.
  • A total of 188 projects on these strategically important mineral commodities like REE, RM, Graphite, Lithium, Vanadium and PGE have been approved for the year 2024-25, which is almost a jump of 50% from previous year’s target.

Punjab Government sets up ‘Sadak Surakhya Force’ (SSF), first of its kind in India, to reduce road fatalities

  • In Punjab, the State government has set up the ‘Sadak Surakhya Force’ (SSF), the first of its kind in the country, to reduce road fatalities.
  • The State Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann flagged off 144 hi-tech vehicles from Jalandhar.
  • Anyone in the State can get help by dailingnumber 112, and the vehicle will reach the spot within ten minutes of receiving the call.
  • A Report says that Indian Hockey team’s former captain and AIG traffic Gaganjit Singh will lead this Sadak Surakhya Force.
  • With more than 1,200 police jawans, 144 hi-tech vehicles have been flagged off and about 90 female drivers will also handle the steering of vehicles.
  • The vehicles will cover 5,500 km of State and national highways, each covering a distance of nearly 30 kilometres.
  • The vehicles are fitted with specialised equipment to check for drunken driving and overspeeding.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath inaugurate HPCL's biogas plant at Saijani village in Badaun district

  • Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly inaugurated the HPCL’s biogas plant at Saijani village in Badaun district.
  • Besides, the foundation stones of biogas plants were also laid for Sitapur, Jaunpur, Bareilly, Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat, Amethi, Bahraich, and Fatehpur
  • 44 development projects worth ₹424 crore were also inaugurated, and foundation stones were laid in different locations in the state.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik inaugurates “Samalei prakalp” at Sambalpur

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurate the “Samalei prakalp” at Sambalpur.
  • The Samalei prakalp includes the development and beautification of the Maa Samaleswari temple of western Odisha.
  • The State government has sanctioned ₹400 crores for this project in two phases.
  • The project has been carried out over an area of 40 acres of land.
  • The project also includes peripheral development of the shrine, amenities for pilgrims, improved access to the temple, construction of a heritage corridor, and development of the Mahanadi riverfront.
  • Samaleswari or Samalei is known to be the presiding deity of the western region of the State.
  • At the temple, situated on the banks of the Mahanadi river, the Goddess has been worshipped as ‘Adishakti’ for centuries.

Meghalaya Chief Minister lays foundation for 3 crucial road infrastructures for development of New Shillong Township

  • Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma laid the foundation for three crucial road infrastructures at New Shillong Township.
  • The New Shillong Township (NST) is a project initiated during the preparation of the Second Shillong Master Plan.
  • The township was proposed to be set up near Mawdiangdiang, spread across an area of 3 square kilometers, to ease urban congestion in Shillong.

Parshottam Rupala chairs first National Conference on Promotion of Seaweed Cultivation at Kutch, Gujarat

  • Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Parshottam Rupala chaired the National Conference on Promotion of Seaweed Cultivation at Koteshwar (Kori Creek), Kutch, Gujarat to implement seaweed cultivation on PAN India basis and emphasis promotion of seaweed cultivation.
  • It’s a first national conference on seaweed cultivation which is an alternate for employment generation of seaweed products as it diversifies marine production and its opportunities for enhancing fish farmer income, reduces reliance on traditional fishing, and diversifies coastal communities’ livelihoods.
  • “Seaweed” is the common name for countless species of marine plants and algae that grow in the ocean as well as in rivers, lakes, and other water bodies. 

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi inaugurates Second State Mining Ministers’ Conference in Bhopal

  • Union Minister of Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the second State Mining Ministers’ Conference in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The Conference is yet another step in the direction of making India’s mineral sector ‘Aatma Nirbhar’ and promoting Sustainable Mining in the country.
  • Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav was the Chief Guest of the event and several Mines Ministers of other States also graced the conference.
  • More than 80 Secretary level officers, Principal Secretaries/ Special Secretaries (Mines), and DGMs/DMGs from 28 States participated, along with the officials of the Ministries of Mines and Coal.

19th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement held at Uganda

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will lead the Indian delegation at the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held at Kampala, Uganda.
  • The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a forum that is not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.
  • After the United Nations, it is the largest grouping of states worldwide.
  • Drawing on the principles agreed at the Bandung Conference in 1955, the NAM was established in 1961 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia through the initiative of President of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito, President of Egypt Gamal Abdel Nasser, Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, President of Indonesia Sukarno, and President of Ghana Kwame Nkrumah.
  • ‘Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence’ is the motto of the summit.

Cameroon starts world's first malaria vaccine program for children

  • Cameroon became the first country to begin immunizing children with malaria vaccine as part of its national immunization program.
  • The country began receiving doses of RTS, S, a vaccine developed by GSK that has been in the making for more than 30 years, in November.
  • The vaccine was part of a pilot program in a handful of other African countries, but is now poised for a broader rollout across that continent, which bears the world’s biggest burden, especially its children.
  • The country’s malaria vaccine program, with a four-dose schedule, targets all children who were 6 months or older on December 31, 2023.

Safex Chemicals to launch its digital app from April 1

  • Delhi-based Safex Chemicals, which is present in all verticals of the agro-chemicals sector, will launch its digital platform – an app– from April 1.
  • The chemical firm will also come out with a new weedicide for soyabean and fungicide for rice that needs to be applied less.
  • Safex will begin testing the app from February 1 through its employees before farmers, who will be the primary users, can begin downloading from April 1.
  • The app will mainly provide crop advisory while Safex will tap its channel partners to sell its products on a business-to-business (B2B) basis.

REC Limited and National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited to collaborate on funding solutions for renewable energy projects and large infra projects

  • REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power and a leading NBFC, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIFL) to collaborate on a suite of funding solutions for Renewable Energy Projects as well as large-scale infrastructure projects in India.
  • The MoU was signed by Executive Director (Finance), REC, Daljeet Singh Khatri and Executive Director & Chief Strategy Officer, NIIFL, Prasad Gadkari, in the presence of CMD, REC, Vivek Kumar Dewangan and CEO and MD, NIIFL, Rajiv Dhar.
  • The collaboration with REC aligns perfectly with NIIF’s broader strategy to enhance financing and attract private capital into the infrastructure sector.
  • Through this partnership, we aim to develop innovative financial solutions supporting major infrastructure.

  • R. Eshwar, senior consultant at Baby Memorial Hospital, Kozhikode, has been appointed as member of the Rehabilitation Council of India, a statutory body of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • He is also the director and member of the Kerala Social Justice department.
  • The Centre has appointed 15 new members to the council for a tenure of two years.

  • Flipkart Co-Founder Binny Bansal has officially exited the board of the Walmart-owned e-commerce firm, which he founded along with Sachin Bansal on October 2007.
  • Binny Bansal recently also floated his new startup, OppDoor, to provide end-to-end solutions to e-commerce firms.

  • The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport was awarded the prestigious Excellence Award by QCFI (Quality Circle Forum of India) in the National Convention on Quality Concepts 2024 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on the continuous improvement initiatives undertaken for airport operations.
  • Union Minister for Roads and Highways Nitin Gadkari presided over.
  • The award jury praised the airport’s initiatives in establishing an effective mechanism to maintain the Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) free from obstacles for safe aircraft operations and sustenance of biodiversity through its sustainability initiatives.

India, France, UAE conduct mega air exercise over Arabian Sea

  • India, France and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) carried out a mega air exercise over the Arabian Sea against the backdrop of the rising global concerns over Houthi militants targeting several commercial vessels in the strategic waterways in the region.
  • The exercise ‘Desert Knight’, featured several frontline aerial assets and combat jets of the air forces of the three countries.
  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) component at the drills consisted of Su-30 MKI, MiG-29 and Jaguar fighter jets besides AWACS (airborne early warning and control aircraft, C-130-J transport plane and air-to-air refuelling aircraft.
  • The exercise took place in the Indian FIR (Flight Information Regions) and with IAF aircraft operated from several bases in India.
  • All airspace worldwide is divided into FIRs and each of them is managed by a controlling authority responsible for ensuring that air traffic services are provided to aircraft flying within it.
  • The exercise came amid increasing attacks on commercial vessels by Houthi militants in the Red Sea.
