Yogi Adityanath launched ‘Sampark Smartshala-Smart Block’ Programme in Gorakhpur

  • In a ceremony held at the Yogiraj Baba Gambhirnath Auditorium, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the ‘Sampark Smartshala-Smart Block’ programme.
  • The collaborative effort between the basic education department and the Sampark Foundation aims to enhance educational facilities.
  • The Skill India Mission is producing excellent outcomes and enhancing the standard of education in the state through the optimal utilisation of technology.
  • As part of the ‘Sampark Smartshala-Smart Block’ initiative, 58 schools affiliated with the Basic Education Council in the city area, along with 68 institutions in the Chargawan block, have been equipped with LED TVs and comprehensive kits for mathematics and English language learning.

Shri Sarbananda Sonowal laid down foundation stone of Inland Waterways Transport Terminal at a cost of ₹46.60 crores at Bogibeel, Dibrugarh

  • The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) terminal to be developed at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh, by the bank of the River Brahmaputra (National Waterways 2) in Dibrugarh, Assam.
  • The tourist-cum-cargo IWT terminal will be developed at a cost of ₹46.60 crores and is scheduled to be completed by February, 2024.
  • Once developed, this terminal is likely to play a pivotal role in rejuvenating inland waterways transportation in the region for both cargo and passenger movement, paving the way for growth of trade & commerce.

Schemes

Government launched scheme for shelter, aid to pregnant minor rape victims

  • Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani launched a scheme to provide shelter, food and legal aid for pregnant minor victims of sexual assault who have no family support.
  • The proposal for “critical care and support for accessing justice to rape/gang rape survivors and minor girls who get pregnant” has been approved by the WCD Ministry with an outlay of Rs 74.10 crore and will be applicable across the country in a week’s time.
  • The scheme aims to provide shelter, food, daily needs, safe transportation for attending court hearings and legal aid to minor girls who have been abandoned by their family due to forced pregnancy, either due to rape or gang rape, or due to any other reason, and have no other means to support themselves.
  • In 2021, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reported 51,863 cases under the POCSO Act.
  • The WCD Ministry officials revealed that 64% or 33,348 cases out of those were reported under sections 3 and 5 of the Act, which pertains to penetrative sexual assault and aggravated penetrative sexual assault, respectively.
  • The fund will help in setting up shelters for such victims.
  • This could be in the nature of standalone shelters, or wards earmarked for such victims in existing child care institutions (CCIs), as state governments see fit.
  • In case of wards inside existing CCIs, the person in-charge of the institution will ensure that a separate safe space is provided to minor rape victims, “as her needs may be different from other children residing there’’.
  • This will ensure integrated support and assistance to minor victims under one roof.

'Gramodyog Vikas Yojna'

  • The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, distributed Honey Bee-Boxes and Toolkits to 130 beneficiaries.
  • The program was organized under the ‘Gramodyog Vikas Yojna’ of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, State Office Delhi, Government of India.
  • The ceremony took place at Chainsukh Vatika, Yamuna Pusta Road, Jagatpur village and was attended by the esteemed dignitaries including Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, MP from North-East Delhi Shri Manoj Tiwari, Chairman of Khadi and Village Industries Commission Shri Manoj Kumar, Member of KVIC North Zone Shri Nagendra Raghuvanshi, CEO of KVIC Shri Vineet Kumar, Deputy CEO and Director of Delhi KVIC State Office.
  • Honey Mission initiated by the KVIC in 2017, with the support of the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.
  • Till date, over 2 lakh bee boxes and honey colonies have been distributed to 20 thousand farmers and beekeepers, creating new avenues for employment in rural areas and enhancing farmer’s income.

Indian Overseas Bank unveiled RuPay Select Debit card, luxury benefits

  • Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) unveiled all new RuPay Select Debit card via tweet.
  • Rupay Select debit card will provide with “luxury, convenience, and security, all in one card.”
  • The introduction of the RuPay Select debit card will offer users with gym memberships, free health checkup, complimentary golf lessons, spa services, and lounge access in selected domestic and international airports.
  • One is required to have a savings bank account or a certificate of deposit (CD) with IOB, maintaining an average daily balance of ₹1 lakh.
  • Cash withdrawal limit is set to ₹50,000.
  • Daily limit for usage in merchant establishments (PoS) is set at ₹5 lakhs.
  • An amount of up to ₹3,50,000 is set for daily usage in e-commerce platforms.
  • Charges for the issuance of the card and annual maintenance fee is ₹800 along with GST, respectively.
  • No charges will be levied for the first five transactions (financial and non-financial).
  • Post, for every financial transaction in cash withdrawal or deposit, ₹10 plus GST will be charged.
  • For non-financial transactions such as checking of bank statement, mini statement, and others, ₹5 plus GST will be charged.

PNB launched UPI Payments with IVR-based UPI 123PAY

  • State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) announced the launch of UPI 123PAY, an IVR-based UPI solution.
  • This offering aligns with the Digital Payment Vision 2025, propelling the nation towards a cashless and cardless society.
  • The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionised the way transactions are conducted in India, providing customers with a seamless, secure, and real-time payment experience.
  • However, until now, UPI services were primarily accessible through smartphones or Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), reliant on robust internet connectivity.

Services PMI growth declines to three-month low of 58.5

  • Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) survey by credit rating agency S&P Global declined marginally to 58.5 in June from 61.2 in May. 
  • The Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) is an economic indicator derived from the monthly survey of the private sector companies.
  • PMI aims in providing information regarding the current and future conditions of a business to the decision-makers, analysts and investors of the company.

University of Jaffna & IIT Madras sign MoU to foster academic collaboration & promote research initiatives

  • To foster academic collaboration and promote research initiatives, the University of Jaffna and the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
  • The signing took place at the Kilinochchi campus, where the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna, Dr. K Pirapaharan, handed over a copy of the MoU to Indian Consul General Raakesh Natraj.
  • The MoU entails a range of opportunities for both institutions, including student and faculty exchanges.
  • Initially, the exchange program will facilitate the transfer of approximately 10 students and faculty members each year at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • This initiative aims to enhance cross-cultural learning experiences and promote academic diversity.

International Conference on Green Hydrogen 2023

  • The Government of India is organizing an International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH-2023) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, to bring together the global scientific, policy, academic and industrial leaders to discuss recent advances and emerging technologies in the entire green hydrogen value chain.
  • The conference will enable the sector stakeholders to explore the evolving green hydrogen landscape and innovation-driven solutions in the sector, thus strengthening the sustainability ecosystem of the sector.
  • The conference is being organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, in partnership with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Office of Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
  • The aim of the Conference is to explore how we can establish a Green Hydrogen ecosystem and foster a systemic approach for meeting the global goals for decarbonization through Green Hydrogen.
  • Apart from domain-specific research interactions on hydrogen production, storage, distribution and downstream applications, the conference will also discuss green financing, human resource upskilling and startup initiatives in this area.
  • The conference will enable to share and learn from international best practices in the sector.

Science and Technology

DGCA to collaborate with EASA on unmanned aircraft systems

  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has entered into a pact with European regulator EASA for cooperation in the areas of unmanned aircraft systems and innovative air mobility.
  • The two watchdogs would cooperate in the areas of development of certification standards, environmental standards and related requirements for the certification and use of unmanned aircraft systems and innovative air mobility operations.
  • This will cover licensing of personnel, training, air traffic management and infrastructure, including Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management standards and services.
  • The DGCA and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
  • MoU will ensure regular information sharing between the two authorities on the technological developments and research, and is expected to result in harmonised standards and accelerated growth of Indian unmanned aviation sector.

REC to provide Rs 4,785 crore loan for refinery project in Rajasthan

  • State-owned REC Ltd will provide a loan of Rs 4,785 crore to HRRL’s project in Rajasthan.
  • HRRL is a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and Rajasthan government.
  • HPCL holds 74 per cent equity stake in HRRL.
  • HRRL has executed a loan agreement under consortium arrangement for Rs 48,625 crore wherein the share of state-run REC Ltd is Rs 4,785 crore.
  • HRRL is setting up a green field refinery cum petrochemical complex, with a capacity of 9 MMTPA at a project cost of Rs 72,937 crore.
  • The project includes setting up of an energy efficient and environment friendly refinery cum petrochemical complex, crude and product storage facilities, township and allied facilities and utilities, a captive power plant for meeting refinery power and steam requirement.

CCI approved acquisition of Marnix Lux by Concentrix Corporation

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the acquisition of Marnix Lux by Concentrix Corporation and shareholding in the combined company by the shareholders of Marnix Lux.
  • The acquirer Concentrix Corporation is a USA-based publicly listed company.
  • It is said to be engaged in providing customer experience services, a segment of Information Technology and Information Technology enabled Services.
  • The target company Marnix Lux is the parent company of Webhelp S.A.S. (Webhelp).
  • Webhelp is said to be active in the provision of business process outsourcing services and specialised services.

The Young University Rankings 2023

  • Shoolini University has added another feather to its cap by becoming the No.2 Private University among the young universities of the country as per The Young University Rankings 2023.
  • This comes in the wake of Shoolini University scoring the No.1 spot among private universities in India by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023 as well as Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2024.
  • This category includes universities established in the past 50 years.
  • For the first time, 13-year-old Shoolini University has participated in these rankings.
  • Public sector Mahatma Gandhi University has been ranked No.1 while JSS Academy is No.2, followed by Shoolini University.
  • These are the only three universities from India in the Top 100 World List.
  • Mahatma Gandhi University has been ranked 77th, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research has been ranked 79th, and Shoolini University is in the 91st spot.
  • Out of 655 universities ranked globally, only 45 Indian institutions could figure in the list.
  • Last year, out of 539 universities ranked globally, only 40 Indian institutions were on the list.

  • India has doubled its share of global commercial services exports to 4.4 percent in 2022 from 2 percent in 2005, according to ‘Trade in services for development’ report by World Bank and World Trade Organisation (WTO) report.
  • China and India doubled their share of global commercial services exports from 2005 to 2022, from 3.0 percent to 5.4 percent, and from 2.0 percent to 4.4 percent.
  • In India, South Africa and Türkiye, jobs directly linked to cross-border services exports account for more than 10 percent of total services sector jobs.

King Charles and Queen Camilla give environmental award to Indian conservationist

  • Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla presented the coveted Elephant Family environmental award to Indian conservationists — filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves behind Oscar-winning documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ and the Real Elephant Collective (TREC) of 70 Adivasi artists.
  • Gonsalves received the Tara Award, inspired by the sacred bond between elephants and humans to recognise extraordinary achievements in storytelling and advocacy for coexistence.
  • The debut director of ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ collected the award, an elephant statuette as a nod to the wildlife conservation charity Elephant Family, from the royals at an Animal Ball at Lancaster House.

  • There was a record turnout of 5235 attendees who contributed to creating history worldwide in the insurance industry.

SAFF Championships trophy

  • In Football, India have lifted the SAFF Championships trophy for the ninth time, beating Kuwait 5-4 in the penalty shoot-out in the final at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.
  • The Indian team made it to the final after beating Lebanon in a semi-final while Kuwait defeated Bangladesh 1-0 in the other last-four clash.

37th Hyderabad Sailing Week & Laser National Championship

  • The prestigious 37th Hyderabad Sailing Week and Laser National Championship has taken off under the aegis of EME Sailing Association (EMESA), Laser Class Association of India, and Secunderabad Sailing Club at Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad.
  • Lieutenant General JS Sidana, Commandant MCEME, Commodore EME Sailing Association, and Vice President Laser Class Association of India formally flagged off the event.
  • Lieutenant General JS Sidana said, the event will pave the way for sailors to represent the Nation at various national and international Forums.
  • The annual National Regatta, Hyderabad Sailing Week, is conducted every year at the Hussain Sagar Lake and the National Laser Championship serves as a trial event for the Asian Games.
  • Organisers informed that 89 individuals, representing 11 clubs, registered themselves.
  • These include 11 women and 17 from Telangana.
  • Murali Kanuri (72) is the oldest participant this year. 
  • The week-long event will conclude on the 9th of this month.

National Postal Worker Day 2023

  • National Postal Worker Day is celebrated on July 1.
  • The postal service consists of everyone from the clerks to the delivery partners to the drivers who carry the letters to faraway places.
  • This day is observed to acknowledge their efforts.
  • In 1997, a postal carrier in the Seattle area started National Postal Worker Day to respect the efforts of his employees.
  • Since then, National Postal Worker Day has been celebrated every year.

International Cooperative Day 2023

  • International Cooperative Day is an annual celebration of the cooperative movement observed on the first Saturday in July since 1923 by the International Cooperative Alliance.
  • This year the day falls on July 01.
  • On December 16, 1992, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed in resolution 47/90 the first Saturday of July 1995 to be International Day of Cooperatives, marking the centenary of the establishment of the International Cooperative Alliance.
  • Since 1995 the United Nations’ International Day of Cooperatives has been observed jointly alongside International Cooperative Day.
