GI tags

  • ‘Chandi Tarakasi’ or silver filigree (Rupa Tarakasi) of Cuttack, Odisha has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • The Banglar muslin is one of the popular traditional handloom craft of West Bengal also received the GI tag.
  • Narasapur crochet lace products in West Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh, which is known for crochet skills, has received GI tag.
  • Ratlam Riyawan Lahsun (Garlic), a variety named after Riyawan village in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh also bagged the GI tag.
  • Ambaji White Marble, which is formed when limestone is re-crystallised under the earth’s crust due to intense pressure and heat of Gujarat had receiuved
  • ‘Tripura Risa’ (Textile) of Killa Mahila Cluster promoted by Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission got GI Tag.
  • Majuli Mask of Assam and the Assam Majuli Manuscript Painting also received the GI tag.
  • The lac bangles of Hyderabad had received the GI tag second one in the city after Haleem.

REC Limited joins hands with UNISED to support Education of Children in Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pradesh

  • REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power and a leading Non-Banking Finance Company, has partnered with the Unit of Science and Educational Development (UNISED) to support the education of around 75,500 children of Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh.
  • REC has entered into this partnership through its Corporate Social Responsibility arm REC Foundation.
  • REC has committed a financial assistance of ₹9.91 crores towards this noble cause.
  • As part of this collaboration, UNISED will implement solar energy-operated smart classes and establish joyful learning resource labs in government schools across Siddharthnagar district.
  • This initiative aims to provide students with access to modern educational tools and resources, empowering them to excel academically and creatively.

Development Projects inaugurated by Prime Minister in Bihar

  • The Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth ₹21,400 crores in Aurangabad, Bihar.
  • Which includes several National Highway projects worth more than ₹18,100 crores and twelve projects under Namami Gange in Bihar that have been developed at a cost of about ₹2,190 crore.
  • He also inaugurated the Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Ltd (HURL) fertilizer plant at a cost of ₹9500 crore in Barauni, Begusarai district.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Inaugurates 27 Greenfield Bulk Drug Park projects and 13 Greenfield Manufacturing Plants for Medical Devices under the PLI Scheme

  • Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Health & Family Welfare Mansukh Mandaviya virtually inaugurated 27 greenfield bulk drug park projects and 13 greenfield manufacturing plants for medical devices under the PLI scheme.
  • India is the 3rd largest player in drugs and pharmaceuticals by volume with an estimated industry size of $50 billion in 2022-23 and exports accounting for 50% of the production.
  • It is anticipated to reach a size of around $130 billion by 2030.
  • The PLI scheme for bulk drugs will lead to reduced import dependence and better supply chain resilience.
  • Investment worth ₹3,651 crore has already been grounded, till December 2023, by the scheme participants.
  • India is amongst world’s fastest emerging Medical Device market with exports from the sector growing steadily at a CAGR of around 14% since FY 2019-20.
  • The market for medical device industry in India is currently estimated to be of the size of $11 billion and it is expected to cross $30 billion mark by 2050.

Uttar Pradesh emerges as the first State in country to issue five crore Ayushman cards under Ayushman Bharat PMJAY

  • Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the first State in the country to issue 5 crore Ayushman cards under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • The State has issued 50,017,920 Ayushman cards and benefited 74,382,304 individuals.
  • A total of 3,716 hospitals in the State are impaneled under this scheme.
  • Under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, a total of 3,481,252 health claims have been filed, with 3,275,737 claims settled, representing a settlement rate of 48 percent in the State.
  • Previously, the average daily admission of patients under this scheme was 2,000, which has now increased to approximately 8,000 per day.

Flipkart launches its own UPI service with Axis Bank

  • Flipkart, an e-commerce marketplace, has launched its UPI service for online and offline payments within and outside its app.
  • For a distinctive customer experience, loyalty features like Supercoins, Cashbacks, Milestone benefits and brand vouchers will be made available post the UPI launch.
  • Powered by Axis Bank, Flipkart UPI will initially be available for Android users. Customers can now register for UPI with @fkaxis handle and can-do fund transfers and checkout payments using the Flipkart app.

Business and Economy

Moody's raises India's 2024 growth forecast to 6.8%

  • Global rating agency Moody’s raised India’s growth forecast for 2024 calendar year to 6.8%, from 6.1% estimated earlier, on the back of ‘stronger-than-expected’ economic data of 2023 and fading global economic headwinds.
  • India’s real GDP expanded 4% year-over-year in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2023, resulting in a 7.7% growth for full-year 2023.

Foxconn, Apple, Samsung to receive ₹4,400 crores under smartphone PLI scheme

  • Apple Inc and Samsung, along with their contract manufacturers in India, are set to receive more than ₹4,400 crore in incentives for meeting production targets in the financial year 2023 under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for smartphones.
  • The beneficiaries also include Foxconn (Hon Hai), Wistron (now owned by Tata Group), Pegatron, Samsung, and Dixon Technologies, a homegrown electronics company.

Union Minister of Minority Affai₹launched Haj Suvidha App launched and Haj Guide for Haj-2024

  • Union Minister for Minority Affairs and Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani, inaugurated the two days’ Training of Trainers Programme as part of preparations towards Haj 2024 at Vigyan Bhavan in the presence of Minister of State for Minority Affairs, John Barla.
  • More than 550 trainers from various States/UTs attended the programme.
  • The Training of Trainers Programme is intended to sensitize and educate the trainers who impart further training to the Haj pilgrims in order to ensure that the pilgrims have a fulfilling experience and are aware of the various aspects of the pilgrimage.
  • She also launched the Haj Suvidha App for the benefit of all Haj Pilgrims.
  • The App has been developed by BISAG-N under the able guidance of the Union Minister for Minority Affairs, and will be a game changer in the pilgrimage experience.
  • Leveraging digital and mobile technologies, the Haj Suvidha app will provide necessary information and direct access to important services like Training modules, Flight Details, Accommodation, Emergency Helpline, Health, etc. at the fingertips of the Pilgrims.
  • The Pilgrims would be able to focus better on their spiritual journey and forget about mundane tasks like travel, luggage, documents
  • The App offers solutions to common problems faced by the pilgrims during their journey and will be a boon especially to those performing Haj for the first time in their life.

  • National Safety Day is annually observed on March 4 in India.

  • Hence, in 1972, National Safety Day was the foundation day of the National Safety Council.

MH 60R ‘Seahawks’ to be commissioned into the Indian Navy

  • The Indian Navy will commission the newly inducted MH 60R Seahawk (a maritime variant of the Blackhawk helicopter) multi-role helicopter at INS Garuda, Kochi marking a pivotal moment in India’s Defence modernisation journey.
  • The Seahawks squadron will be commissioned in the Indian Navy as INAS 334.
  • The helicopters are a part of the 24-aircraft FMS contract signed with the US government in Feb 2020.
  • The helicopter is designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) and vertical replenishment (VERTREP).
