National News

NTPC commissions India's first air-cooled condenser at North Karanpura plant

  • State-owned power giant NTPC has commissioned India’s first air-cooled condenser at North Karanpura super critical thermal plant in Jharkhand, which would help in water conservation.
  • This project has been envisaged with Air Cooled Condenser (ACC) which has almost 1/3rd water footprint as compared to a conventional Water Cooled Condenser (WCC), a power ministry.

Coal India production up 14 pc till Feb, on track to surpass 700mn target for FY'23

  • Coal India Limited (CIL) reported a robust growth in production of 619.7 million tonnes till February in the current financial year, representing a 14.3 per cent growth over the same period last year.
  • This is also a 100 per cent achievement against the progressive target, and with a gain of 77.3 million tonnes, CIL is on track to breach its production target of 700 MT for FY’23.

NTPC to host G20 International Seminar on ‘Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage

  • India has assumed the presidency of G20 from 1st December 2022 for a period of one year. In its presidency, 1st Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) Meeting is scheduled to be held from 5th February to 7th February 2023.
  • NTPC, India’s largest integrated power utility, on behalf of Ministry of Power, Govt of India, will be hosting a side event in form of an International Seminar on Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS) on 5th February 2023 at Taj Westend, Bengaluru. This seminar is likely to be attended by industries, policy makers, scientists and academicians of different countries.
  • The seminar will focus on underlining the importance of CCUS for achieving “clean energy transition” and subsequently moving towards Net Zero.

FCI sells 5.40 lakh metric tonnes of wheat in 4th e-auction

  • A total of 5 lakh 40 thousand metric tonne wheat has been sold to 1049 bidders in 23 States in the 4th e-auction by the Food Corporation of India. A total quantity of 11 lakh 57 thousand metric tonne was offered during the 4th e-auction. The auction was held under the Government’s initiative towards market intervention to control the price of wheat and atta.
  • In the 4th e-auction against the all-India weighted average selling price received was 2193.82 rupees per quintal stocks were sold for an all-India weighted average reserve price of 2137.04 rupees per quintal.

UAE announces world’s first free zone dedicated to digital and virtual asset companies

  • The government of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, has announced plans to establish RAK Digital Assets Oasis, the world’s first free zone dedicated to digital and virtual asset companies. The announcement was made at the Blockchain Life 2023 conference.

Himachal approves 34 industrial projects of Rs 1,754 cr investment

  • Himachal Pradesh’s Single Window Clearance and Monitoring Authority approved 34 projects for setting up new industrial enterprises and the expansion of existing units in its 26th meeting.
  • These projects involve a total proposed investment of Rs 1,754.44 crores (approximately) with employment avenues for about 3,635 persons.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates 'Vijay Sankalp Yatra' in Belagavi

  • Defence Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajnath Singh inaugurated the ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ in the poll-bound state Karnataka.
  • Earlier in the day Defence Minister arrived in Karnataka’s Belagavi to inaugurate the ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ in the poll-bound state. Earlier, party President JP Nadda flagged off the ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar.

PM Narendra Modi's home state Gujarat set to host Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam

  • Gujarat is all set to host the Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam. The Kashi Tamil Sangamam hosted last year in the religious town of Kashi or Varanasi was seen as a huge success. The 10-day event saw the participation of top ministers including Modi.
  • A similar event is being planned in Gujarat in the month of April at Somnath.

MP govt presents Rs 3.14 lakh crore Budget; announces Rs 8,000 crore for new women welfare scheme in poll year

  • The Madhya Pradesh government presented a Rs 3.14 lakh crore Budget for 2023-24 with a provision of Rs 8,000 crore for the ‘Mukhyamantri Ladli Behna Yojana’, a new scheme to be rolled out for the welfare of women in the state where the Assembly polls are due this year-end.
  • A new scheme named ‘Mukhyamantri Balika Scooty Yojana’ to provide e-scooters to the girls securing first class in Class 12 examination is also announced in the budget.

Lucknow airport to get a major upgrade, Adani Group to invest Rs 5,000 crores

  • Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (CCSIA) will soon get a massive upgrade.
  • The Adani Group plans to invest up to Rs 5,000 crore to upgrade the same.

Bhojpur's Millet Festival is good to encourage people to include millets in their diet: PM

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that Bhojpur’s Millet Festival will help in increasing awareness among the people towards Shree Anna.
  • A two-day Millets Mahotsav was organized from 28th February to 1st March in the Bhojpur district of Bihar.

Asia's longest ever cycle race flagged off from Srinagar in J&K

  • The Asia’s longest-ever cycle race was flagged off from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. The race, after covering a distance of more than three thousand kilometres, will culminate at Kanyakumari.
  • Asia’s longest cycle race began in Srinagar today as 29 cyclists including one woman set off for the first of its kind 3651-kilometre event.
  • The race which has been accorded the status of Asian Ultracycling Championship by the world Ultracycling Association was flagged off in Srinagar by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Shri Vijay Kumar Bidhuri.

Summer millets to be procured at MSP in Gujarat for the first time

  • For the first time, summer millets such as Bajra, jowar, and ragi will be procured at MSP in Gujarat. This decision was taken in the Cabinet meeting held in Gandhinagar to celebrate the International Year of Millets.

Karnataka CM inaugurates Chhatrapati Shivaji statue in Yellur fort

  • Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai unveiled a larger-than-life statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on Rajhansgad fort near Yellur in Belagavi district.

  • Financial services firm Bajaj Finserv Limited has received the final registration from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to commence its mutual fund operations.
  • The company would operate the business under Bajaj Finserv Mutual Fund banner, the Pune-based firm.

  • Indian tech industry grew 11.4 per cent to USD 245 billion in FY23: Nasscom.

India's economy to grow at 7 pc in FY23

  • India’s GDP or gross domestic product may grow 7 per cent in financial year 2022-23, according to the second advance estimates released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). According to the first advance estimates released last month, the GDP growth was pegged at 7 per cent for 2022-23. In financial year 2021-2022, India’s economy grew at 8.7 per cent.

Reliance, Tata Power bid for ₹19,500-crore solar module incentive

  • Reliance Industries, Tata Power, as well as international firms like First Solar, are among bidders for ₹19,500 crore in financial incentives that India is offering to promote domestic solar module manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported panels from dominant producer China.

  • Choudhary succeeds Vibhash Kumar who recently superannuated from the services of the corporation.

Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi takes charge as chief of Western Naval Command

  • Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi took charge as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Mumbai-headquartered Western Naval Command (WNC).
  • He succeeds Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh who retired from service.

Hekani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse become 1st women MLAs from Nagaland

  • Salhoutuonuo Kruse and Hekani Jakhalu, both from the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, made history by becoming the first women candidates to be elected in the state assembly election. Kruse won from Western Angami AC and Jakhalu clinched Dimapur-III constituencies in Nagaland.

Zero Discrimination Day 2023

  • In order to promote equality and justice, the United Nations and other international organizations mark Zero Discrimination Day on March 1. When the day first began as a campaign in December 2013, then-Executive Director Michel Sidibé kicked it off in Beijing with a sizable ceremony.
  • The theme for Zero Discrimination Day for this year is “Save lives: Decriminalize.”

World Wildlife Day 2023

With an aim to raise awareness about how to prevent deafness and hearing loss, March 3 is observed as World Hearing Day.

This year’s theme is “Ear and hearing care for all!”.

For the first time, the day was observed by the WHO in 2007. However, back then it was named as International Ear Care Day. Therefore, in 2016, the WHO decided to declare the global day as World Hearing Day. And since then the day is organised every year on March 3 by WHO’s Office for the Prevention of Blindness and Deafness.

PM hails Cabinet nod to procurement of 70 trainer aircraft, three cadet training ships

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the decision of the Cabinet Committee on Security to approve the procurement of 70 HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft for the IAF will strengthen the ongoing efforts to make the defence sector self-reliant while also benefiting the vibrant MSME sector.
  • Modi also said that the Cabinet Committee on Security’s approval to sign a contract for acquisition of three Cadet Training Ships (CTS) will cater to the training requirements of the Navy and strengthen it further.

IAF participates in Ex Shinyuu Maitri

  • On the sidelines of a joint Army exercise between India and Japan, Dharma Guardian, the Indian Army is participating in Exercise Shinyuu Maitri with the Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF). The air exercise is being conducted from March 1 to 2, 2023.
  • In this year’s edition of the air exercise, the Indian Air Force’s contingent is being represented by one C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Meanwhile, the JASDF is participating in the exercise with C-2 transport aircraft.

Cabinet approves two important defence deals to strengthen training & generate jobs

  • The union cabinet took a couple of important decisions like approving a contract with Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) for the acquisition of three Cadet Training Ships at an overall cost of Rs 3,108.09 crore and procurement of 70 HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft from HAL for Indian Air Force at a cost of over Rs 6,800 crore
  • The deal with L&T came under Buy {Indian-IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)} category and the delivery of ships is scheduled to commence from 2026.
