National News

India exploited 29pc of hydropower potential: Power Minister

  • India has exploited 29 percent of its hydropower potential against over 80 percent and 70 percent developed by the US and European Union respectively.
  • As per the Reassessment Study carried out by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) during 1978-1987, the assessed hydropower potential in the country is about 1,45,320 MW (for projects with capacity above 25 MW), Power Minister R K Singh.
  • Singh said that 42,104.6 MW (29 percent) out of 1,45,320 MW has been developed and 15,023.5 MW (10.3 percent) is under construction.

India's renewable energy capacity reaches 168.96 GW till Feb 2023

  • India’s total installed renewable energy capacity touched 168.96 GW mark by February 2023-end.
  • Out of the total 168.96 GW, 64.38 GW is solar power capacity, 51.79 GW hydro, 42.02 GW wind and 10.77 GW bio power, R K Singh, Union Minister for Power, New and Renewable Energy.
  • Another 82.62 GW of green energy capacity is under implementation and 40.89 GW of capacity is under various stages of tendering.
  • A total of 3,16,754.86 MU of electricity has been generated from renewable energy sources during the current year 2022-23 (up to January 2023), Singh.
  • According to the minister, India’s total power generation capacity was at 412.21 GW as on February 28, 2023.

Jyotiraditya Scindia addresses Aviation Summit 2023 by CAPA India

  • Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel Jyotiraditya M Scindia highlighted the various aspects of the development of the Indian aviation industry while addressing the CAPA India’s Aviation Summit 2023.
  • In the six years from FY 2014 to FY 2020 the number of domestic passengers has more than doubled from 120 million to about 275 million at a CAGR of 14.5 per cent and had there been no COVID outbreak we would have reached a CAGR of about 18-20 per cent.
  • India will have more than 140 million passengers in FY 2024 alone.

NTPC, IOCL ink pact to set up renewable energy projects

  • NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) have inked pact for setting up of renewable energy projects to meet round-the-clock power requirement of IOCL refineries.
  • The JV agreement was signed in the presence of Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC Limited and Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of IOCL.
  • NTPC Ltd, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, NGEL, has set an ambitious target of building a renewable generation portfolio of 60 GW over the next decade to aggressively pursue its green energy business.

Agriculture Ministry ropes in Nafed for promotion of millets

  • The Agriculture Ministry has roped in cooperative Nafed for promotion of the government’s millets initiative at global scale, including installation of millet vending machines and setting up of an experience centre in Delhi-NCR.
  • Nafed, which has entered into a MoU with the ministry in this regard, will set up a millet corner in Nafed Bazaar Retail Stores, install millet vending machines across Delhi-NCR.

  • India is the largest producer and 7th largest exporter of “Shree Anna” as of 2021 in the world.
  • Common type of millets grown in the country include pearl millet (Bajra), sorghum (Jowar), finger millet (Ragi), and small millets such as foxtail millet, barnyard millet, kodo millet, proso millet, little millet and two pseudo millets such as Buckwheat and Amaranthus.
  • To promote and increase the production and productivity of millets, his ministry has been implementing a sub-mission on nutri-cereals under the National Food Security Mission since 2018-19.
  • It is being implemented in identified districts of 14 states in the country.
  • Under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, PM-KISAN the government has so far disbursed over two lakh 41 thousand crore rupees to over 11 crore farmers in the country.

CUMI inks MoU with DRDO’s RCI Laboratory for Ceramic Radome Technology

  • Murugappa Group-owned Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI) announced that it has signed a licensing agreement for transfer of technology (LAToT) with DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI) laboratory to manufacture ‘Ceramic Radomes (GELCAST Process) Technology’ used in missile systems.

Over 26,000 defence items uploaded on SRIJAN Portal and offered to Industry for indigenisation

  • The government has said that defence imports have reduced from 46 per cent to 36.7 per cent since 2018-19.
  • The government has notified four Positive Indigenisation Lists comprising 411 major weapons platforms and systems.
  • He informed that over 26 thousand defence items have been uploaded on SRIJAN Portal and offered to the Industry for indigenisation.

India, Japan sign two agreements regarding loan for Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed railway project & cooperation in Japanese language

  • Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said India and Japan signed two documents on the sidelines of the bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
  • The agreements include Renewal of Memorandum of Cooperation in Japanese language, and Exchange of notes on JICA loan for 300 billion Yen on Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed railway project.
  • Japanese Pm also invited India invited along with Australia, Cook Islands, Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia and others for the G7 Hiroshima Summit.

Odisha approves Rs6,283 crores outlay to develop cyclone resilient network in coastal areas

  • Odisha Distribution Reforms Committee headed by Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena.
  • The committee has reviewed the Action Plan and Detailed Project Report (DPR) to be submitted to Ministry of Power, Government of India under Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and accorded in principal approval for the outlay of Rs 6,283 crore.
  • Out of the total outlay, Centre shall fund Rs 3,942 crore and the rest amount of Rs 2,341 crore will be borne by the State exchequer.

UP govt to provide sports kits to every village panchayat by next year

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the state government will provide sports kits to every village panchayat by next year.
  • The work is going on war footing to build playgrounds in 30,000 villages, along with separate open gyms for men and women, mini stadiums in blocks and stadiums in districts.
  • The chief minister also handed over appointment letters to six international players who got jobs as coaches on an honorarium of Rs 1.5 lakh per month.

First Edition of HCL Cyclothon in Noida successfully concludes with over 1300 Cycling Enthusiasts participating in the event

  • HCL Cyclothon was successfully concluded with roaring cheers from all the participants as over 1300 cyclists taking part in the city’s premier cycling event, crossed the finishing line on 19th March.
  • HCL Cyclothon was organized under the aegis of Cycling Federation of India and in association with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and Noida Authority.
  • It emerged as one of the largest cycling events with India’s biggest prize money of Rs. 32 Lakhs given to the top 70 finishers in the Professionals and Amateurs categories.
  • Cyclists followed multiple loops of the 14 km long route.

Uttarakhand Cabinet gives nod to Excise Policy 2023-24

  • In a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Uttarakhand government approved the Excise Policy 2023-24 for the State.
  • After the new policy, country and foreign-made liquor will become cheaper in the state.

  • The Second G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group (SFWG) meeting kicked off at Udaipur in Rajasthan with a call to identify mechanisms for mobilisation of timely and adequate resources for climate finance.

RBI imposes Rs 2.27 cr penalty on RBL Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of Rs 2.27 crore on RBL Bank Ltd for non-compliance with norms related to recovery agents.
  • The penalty has been imposed for non-compliance with certain provisions of the directions issued by it on ‘Internal Ombudsman Scheme, 2018’, ‘Fair Practices Code for Lenders’, ‘Credit Card Operations of Banks’, ‘Managing Risks and Code of Conduct in Outsourcing of Financial Services by banks’ and ‘Recovery Agents engaged by Banks’.

RBI estimates retail inflation at 5-5.6% for FY24

  • Over the financial year ahead (2023-24), inflation is expected to range tightly between 5.0 and 5.6 percent if India survives an El Niño event adversely affecting the southwest monsoon, given global uncertainties, Reserve Bank of India.

EPFO adds 14.86 lakh members in January with over 50 pc in 18-25 age group

  • The provisional payroll data of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) showed a total of 14.86 lakh net members were added in the month of January 2023.
  • Out of the total members added during the month, around 7.77 lakh new members have come under the ambit of EPFO for the first time.
  • Among the newly joined members, the highest enrolment is registered in the age group of 18-21 years with 2.26 lakh members, followed by the age group of 22-25 years with 2.06 lakh members.
  • The age groups of 18-25 years constitute 55.52 per cent of the total of new members during the month of January.

SBI MF schemes buy 2.2% stake worth Rs 757 cr in HDFC AMC in open market

  • SBI Mutual Fund bought a 2.2 per cent stake in HDFC AMC worth Rs 757 crore in open market transactions, as GQG Partners sold off 1.16 per cent stake (worth Rs 396.8 crore) in the asset management company.
  • The deal saw shares being exchanged at an average price of Rs 1,600 per share.

  • INS Sujata, a patrol vessel of the Indian Navy visited Port Maputo in Mozambique during its overseas deployment.
  • The ship was received by Captain Nitin Kapoor, DA Pretoria, Commandant NRN Siva Babu, Coast Guard Afloat Support Team and Captain Florentino Jose’ Narciso from Mozambican Navy amidst the fanfare of Mozambican Navy Band and traditional dance performances at the jetty, the Ministry of Defense.
